Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am exploring progressive metal in New York.
The progressive metal bands in New York are rarely a typical prog act, so the focus is more on bands that incorporate progressive elements in their music. More...
Czech Republic death metal band Destroying Divinity has recently signed a multiple album contract with Brutal Bands. After releasing both “Created” and “Hell Unleashed” through Grodhaisn Records, the band will release their third album “Dark Future” through Brutal Bands on June 25th.
Destroying Divinity drummer Ommurtag had this to say: “We are very pleased that our CD is going to be released by Brutal Bands. It is great to be among all those brutal bands even though our style is little different in comparison to the rest in their roster. I hope that we will become a part of Brutal Bands family. Darkness is coming...."
Brutal Bands founder Scott Ellingboe adds: "I was first introduced to Destroying Divinity from a fan recommendation. After just a couple minutes of listening to their material I contacted this band. I’ve wanted to sign a death metal band with a darker sound for a long time now. Bands like this are a rare breed these days, so it’s an honor to have them in our roster now."

"As soon as we found out Dark Tranquillity were going to headline the US and Canada, we knew we had to get on the tour! After playing with so many different bands over the past few years, we finally feel at home with this one. Our music meshes perfect together and I know the fans, and ourselves as well, will enjoy the whole show from start to end. Having Mutiny Within on the tour is an added bonus, they fit great in the package and I cant wait to watch them kill it every night. We have a ton of respect for Dark Tranquillity and what they have accomplished over their career, so we look forward to tearing apart North America together. Steve Smyth, guitarist for the reactivated San Francisco Bay area thrashers Forbidden, has issued the following update about his time at Sonic Room/Audio Voyage Studios in Livermore, California recording the band’s as-yet-untitled fifth studio album:
“Day One: We set up shop at Audio Voyage Studios, in Livermore California, deep in the East Bay Area. Very cool place, small, a couple of well-tuned rooms set up just right to do the rest of our tracking... I met Craig, Tim, and Brad there, and we began to talk about what kind of sound I was after for my rhythm tone... I had an arsenal of gear with me as well, so we began to break it out, and talk about cabinets that would be used, as well as heads. As it turned out, Craig had been using a combination of 3 amps and 3 cabinets, and when I heard his tone, I was absolutely blown away by the clarity in all frequencies, the gain factor, and the fact that you could literally hear air pushing from the speakers into the mics as well. Great tone! I wanted to get a tone that would stand on its own... After some discussion, I set up 3 heads of my choosing with 3 cabinets, 2 with Vintage 30s and 1 with 75 watters in there, and I had a monster ready to come out and play... [and] we agreed the tone I had in mind suited the tracks perfectly, and set about tracking!
“’Overthrow’... is tricky to play in that the main riff keeps pedalling back and forth on specific notes, but varying each time we play through the riff, and there’s a lot of stretching involved. This track actually got my wrist feeling a small bout of tendonitis after playing it throughout the song. In fact, there’s more than a few things I played or wrote for this album that involve some serious stretches! But it’s for the song, and in the end, that’s what matters most. [W]e decided it was best to double-track this song as well to give it more clarity, and more of a 'wall' type of sound. There is a middle section in this song where the feeling I was after was that of a ship on an ocean, being thrown violently back-and-forth on the sea during a storm. I think we got this sound in the end, so I hope you all will enjoy it. Take some Dramamine before you do! Ha ha! More...
Forgotten Tales vocalist Sonia Pineault has checked in with the following update from the recording studio:
"Hi everyone. I finally finished the recording of the vocal tracks and I must tell you that everything went very well. It's true that in some moments, things went very hard but I always gave my best and and it gave excellent results. For the last song, we had to proceed differently because Marty hadn't finished to compose the melody. I had to learn it all along the recording.
"Despite all these hours I spent there, not everything is yet finished for me. I'll be back in a couple of weeks to record the backing vocals. It's now Marty's turn to be back in studio. He just began the recording of his solos and it should take him a couple of days. Let's wish him good luck. See you soon."
AC/DC's new music video for "Highway To Hell" from "Iron Man 2" is debuting on Amazon.com today. The all AC/DC soundtrack is the closest the band has come to releasing a "best of" or "greatest hits" compilation. Here's the tracklisting for the "Iron Man 2" soundtrack:
1. Shoot to Thrill
2. Rock 'N' Roll Damnation
3. Guns for Hire
4. Cold Hearted Man
5. Back in Black
7. If You Want Blood (You've Got It)
8. Evil Walks
10. Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be
11. Have a Drink on Me
12. The Razor's Edge
13. Let There Be Rock
14. War Machine
15. Highway to Hell
Update: Here's the video from YouTube, although the quality isn't that great:
The sixth episode starts with the end of the last challenge. Bret Michaels is in a positive mood, deciding to go out drinking. “We’re going to ROCK!”
The next morning Sharon Osbourne is still not with the group, Donald Trump begins hinting he may have to make a move here, possibly removing her from the show. Sharon’s strategy to win may be taking a hit, let’s see how this plays out.
For the next challenge the teams must promote an up and coming country star. There are two. Given their non-descript looks and aura of boredom we will refer to them as Country Riser #1 and Country Riser #2. The details are given out at the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Annex in New York. Trump says he expects both Cyndi Lauper and Michaels to be there one day. Interesting side note: The Annex actually closed just two months after this taping. I don’t have proof it had to do with The Donald’s lobbying for Bret Michaels induction, but it is safe to say this contributed. For the women, Cyndi Lauper quickly takes on the role of Project Manager, for the men, ex-wrestler, Bill Goldberg, assumes the position. More...
Ukrainian black metallers BALFOR, who recently signed to Pulverised Records, have issued a statement announcing guitarist Agnarr’s unexpected departure. Agnarr was forced to quit the band following a recent injury that’s said to be serious enough to stop the guitarist from performing in the studio or live. No further info on the injury was given.
BALFOR founding frontman Thorgeir comments, “We are very sorry that this has happened to Agnarr. It’s a terrible thing when a musician is no longer able to play, and he is one of those musicians with a natural talent and a lot of experience. We hope that he’ll be able to overcome the effects of the injury and eventually return to playing. BALFOR is certainly going to miss both his musicianship and his companionship.”
Dragon-T, former guitarist of thrash metal band Hell:On, will replace Agnarr. “Once again we’ve been lucky in our search for a guitarist,” Thorgeir notes. “Dragon-T is as skilled as Agnarr, both live and when it comes to recording, and the fact that he was available just when we needed him was a stroke of good fortune for us.”
Dragon-T’s first live appearance with BALFOR was at the Metal Heads Mission Festival in Kiev this weekend where BALFOR headlined. Upcoming live dates for BALFOR include:
5/22/2010 - Hot Jam Club - Lugansk, UA
5/23/2010 - Vorovskogo Club - Dimitroy, UA

Sweden's Sabaton has issued the following announcement about recording a music video for the track "Uprising:"
"We are happy to announce that the recording of our music video for the song 'Uprising' has been rescheduled successfully, and that it will take place in Warsaw during this and next week.
Out of respect for the Polish mourning period we decided to postpone the video shoot last week, and now we will try again.
"The song 'Uprising' is a powerful and emotional tribute to those who lost their lives in the Warsaw uprising in 1944, and so shall the video be! This will by far be the biggest Sabaton video production ever, and dare we say: One of the biggest in heavy metal? The video will feature Peter Stormare as SS-Obergruppenführer von dem Bach and will be directed by Jacek Raginis (related to decorated ww2 hero Wladyslav Raginis)."
"Uprising" is off the band's upcoming new album "Coat of Arms." The song can also be heard via the Sabaton MySpace page.
Tim Roth, guitarist of Canadian progressive death metal band Into Eternity, has issued the following update:
"A few days ago I checked my mail and was happy to find out Toy's Factory had sent me the Japanese releases of our last 2 releases: The Scattering Of Ashes and The Incurable Tragedy! It's nice to know that we have such great industry people and fans supporting us in Japan. I will never forget the great times we had in 2008 and 2009. Japan rules!"
"In other news, we have started rehearsals again and things are coming along. We have also started on 'song 1.' I have lots of music demoed at home now, so we are looking through it and starting our first new song. So far the song starts with an arpeggio instrumental and then heads into some heavy riffing."
"Thanks for all the emails we have been getting wondering what is going on, well here it is. Thanks again to Japan for all the continued support!"

German thrash metallers DEW SCENTED have posted the first new song, "Arise From Decay," of their upcoming new album "Invocation," to be released May, 21st/24th 2010 in Europe via Metal Blade Records, on MySpace.
Vocalist Leif Jensen comments, "We are happy to finally be able to debut a new song for all of you to hear! 'Arise From Decay' is the new album's opening track (after the instrumental intro piece 'Downfall') and a really good representation of not only what the album is all about, but also of what DEW-SCENTED sound like in 2010. 'Arise From Decay' combines many of the band's 'trademark' elements into a straight forward and pretty vicious song. This song was actually one of the first fully finalized tracks when we started writing the 'Invocation' album with the band's new line-up and we have already been playing it live for a while now with great response. Enjoy!"
Swedish satanic death metallers AEON have posted the first song, "Kill Them All," of their upcoming new album "Path Of Fire" on the band's MySpace page.
Guitarist Zeb Nilsson comments on the song, "This is kind of funny, cause I actually dreamt that we were performing this song live and it sounded so cool that I had to start working on it the day after I had the dream. Of course all the details in it were not in my dream, but the whole concept and idea behind how it was gonna sound was all very realistic. This is a very fast song and it is easy to catch I think. It has some really heavy parts too, and the leads on it ended up really cool too. I think this song will be a good first sample of this album!"
AEON recorded Path Of Fire in Sweden while it was mixed by multi-talent Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal) at Mana Studio in Florida. Mastering was done by Alan Douches at West West Side Music.

Sydney five-piece metal outfit Resist The Thought has announced May 7th, 2010, as the release date for "Damnation," the band's follow up to the 2008 EP "The Gift of Sacrifice." Formed in 2007, Resist The Thought blends crushing breakdowns with fast paced technical riffs to create their own brand modern metal. The new album should be no exception, with guitarist Tim Aaron commenting, "We really pushed ourselves in creating this record. We took six months off touring and just focused on writing and demoing. From the start, we had the intention of making a timeless record we are all proud of."
The title of the album, "Damnation," sets the theme for the record which revolves around the idea that humankind will be responsible for their own destruction. Through constant touring, the band has earned themselves a reputation as one of Sydney’s up and coming metal bands.
"Damnation" is in stores Friday May 7th, 2010 in Australia through New Justice Records. In the meantime, check out some of their music on the band's MySpace player.
