Slipped Disc Records of Valley Stream, NY closes its doors today (April 19th) after 25 years of supporting heavy metal, hardcore and rock music.
Longtime customer Charles Florio has sent BW&BK the following note about the closing: "I’ve been shopping there since the store opened and made my last visit to the store this afternoon. I would like to thank Owner Mick Schutzman for all of the great times I had at his store. I met METALLICA, SLAYER, EXODUS, ROB HALFORD and many other bands thanks to him and his store. I urge everybody who reads this post to visit as many Independed Record Stores as they can before their all gone due to the Internet buying and Illegal downloading . When SAXON wrote the song 'Denim And Leather', they were describing metal rising up and breaking out. The verse “Did you hang around your favorite record store” was exactly the way it was back then. It’s a shame it’s not that way anymore."
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY — the new project from SEPULTURA founding members Max Cavalera (guitar, vocals; also in SOULFLY) and Igor Cavalera (drums) — will announce the details of its upcoming U.S. headlining tour next week. According to a posting on the band's MySpace page, "the select shows for this tour may be CAVALERA CONSPIRACY's only performances in the U.S. in support of 'Inflikted' [the group's debut album]."
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY will take part in OZZY OSBOURNE's Monsters Of Rock festival on July 26 at Calgary, Alberta, Canada's McMahon Stadium.
MOTÖRHEAD mainman Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister has told Times Online that he would resist any attempt to force him to turn down the music as part of Scotland's new control of noise at work regulations, introduced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following a Brussels (European Union) directive.
"The essence of rock 'n' roll is loud music," he said. "How the hell can we be expected to enjoy ourselves if we’ve got to turn it down?"
The rules cap weekly average noise exposure at 85 decibels, meaning periods of loud play need to be cancelled out by quiet periods. The idea is not to protect audiences at concerts but performers and other staff.
The new directive also affects rock and classical musicians. Classical orchestras are considering whether they may have to hold quiet rehearsals for music by composers such as Wagner or Verdi to offset the loudness of their concerts.
The loudest rock bands have included THE WHO, who in 1976 reached 126 decibels. They were beaten last year, however, by the Watford punk band GALLOWS, who hit 132.5 decibels.
EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee has shot down rumors that she will be collaborating with METALLICA on a song for the legendary heavy metal band's forthcoming ninth studio album, tentatively due this fall.
A couple of unsubstantiated reports involving Lee and METALLICA have been making the rounds on the Internet, including that she will appear on a new version of the band's classic track "Fade to Black" and that she will be featured on a brand new METALLICA song called "Last Life". However, according to Amy, neither one of them holds any water.
"I am NOT going to be collaborating with METALICA," Lee wrote in an online posting. "I have absolutely no idea where this rumor came from, but it is not true."
UK bassist Adrian Lambert (BIOMECHANICAL, SON OF SCIENCE, ex-DRAGONFORCE) has joined new U.S.-based melodic speed metal band COLDERA.
Commented Adrian: "I heard that Bill [Hudson, ex-CELLADOR] was putting a new melodic speed metal outfit together. We were chatting one day and he said that he couldn't find anyone Stateside who could really handle the bassist position. When I heard that Carlos [Zema, DAVE SHANKLE GROUP, ex-OUTWORLD] and Adam [Sagan, ex-INTO ETERNITY] were on board I figured a trip to the States was in order — and here we are!"
Lambert continued, "We've already started pre-production for the debut album which will be released later this year. People are gonna love the sick shredding and the great melodies we have in the COLDERA songs — this is definitely Bill's most amazing work yet. Prepare for the onslaught!"
Hudson stated: "It's great to have Adrian on board. His amazing and unquestionable bass skills combined with bombastic stage presence definitely makes him the best choice COLDERA could ever make. Frankly, I never thought we'd find someone like that for the band. We'll be uploading new pre production tracks to our MySpace page on a regular bassis, and we're really excited for you all to her it."
COLDERA has launched its official MySpace page, which includes a streaming-audio version of the track "Through the End".
COLDERA's lineup is rounded out by young up-and-coming Florida shredder John Slaughter (SKINDUSTRY).
Sundsvall, Sweden-based death metallers IN BATTLE will support MARDUK in IN BATTLE's hometown on May 24 at Club Destroyer.
IN BATTLE is currently writing material for a new album, tentatively due sometime next year. The group previously described the new material as "extremely intense, brutal, straight-forward. It kind of sounds like a mix between the 'Soul Metamorphosis' MCD with a touch of the first two IN BATTLE albums, so prepare yourselves for this coming whirlwind of destruction!"
IN BATTLE's fifth album will be recorded at Epidemic Productions in Sundsvall.
Florida’s MARUTA have posted the following update:
“The ‘In Narcosis’ album has been delayed quite a bit. We had to re-record guitars for a couple songs. We encountered some engineering problems the first time around, and we weren’t able to get a decent enough mix that we/Willowtip wanted to release. It’s in the process of being mixed/mastered by Scott Hull right now, hopefully this damn thing will be able to see the light of day in a couple months. We started recording it in late 2006 which is crazy! I know we jumped the gun before by announcing it would be out alot sooner, but alot of shit has been out of our hands.
We are still waiting to hear on the release date for ‘This Comp Lills Facists vol. 1' comp that Relapse is putting out. It’s gonna be a killer compilation with some great grind bands older and newer. Two exclusive MARUTA tracks will appear on it: ‘Chemical Tomb’ (which can be heard in our MySpace page) and ‘Behind The Steel Curtain.’
"The out of print 4 song demo is being re-released as a 7" by ourselves in the U.S. (731 Bacterial) and by Extreme Terror Productions in Europe. This is going to be a very DIY release, the covers will be silk screened in various different colors. Alex Eckman Lawn will be handling artwork duties. This 7" will be strictly limited to 500 copies in the U.S. and 500 in EUR." More...
A Day To Remember will be shooting a new music video in Cleveland, Ohio on April 29th and 30th and is looking for some fan participation. Here's the official word:
"We are finalizing details, but if you will be in the area on those dates and are interested in making ADTR history, email firstname.lastname@example.org with ADTR VIDEO as the subject header... we'll hit you back with details!"
Witchbreed have given the following statement:
"We are proud to announce Witchbreed will officially begin the work for our debut album on 22nd April. Witchbreed will enter MedusaLab Studios in Portugal with legendary producer Waldemar Sorychta (Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Samael, Tiamat, MoonSpell) for nine intense days of pre-production followed by full recordings during May and June and finally mixing and mastering back in Germany by Waldemar Sorychta himself in July. If all goes according to plan Ascendance Records will unleash our debut album this Autumn.
"We couldn't feel more confident and flattered for our collaboration with Waldemar, it took us all our blood and sweat to get him to work with us but as we felt he was the right man for the job we fought it to the end and always believed our music perfectly fitted his knowledge and renowned producer skills. We are still in awe and we would like to show our biggest appreciation for Mr. Lee Barrett and Sir Sam Grant of Ascendance Records for making this possible, without their strong belief in Witchbreed's music and understanding we couldn't have made it."
The title of Witchbreed's debut (Ascendance Records) will be "Heretic Rapture" and the tracks are given as follows, the final order to be decided. More...
EXODUS vocalist Rob Dukes has issued the following update from the band's current European tour:
"This short tour has been fucking killer — a few sold-out shows, and the fact that the fans are singing along to all the new stuff is awesome. I have been having a blast."
"One quick funny story: We were parked in Bielefeld, Germany and while parked up on a day off, a truck driving by slammed into our trailer at 35 mph. It shook the bus and everyone woke up, our driver jumped out his bunk and ran off the bus and he was fucking naked; it was hysterical. Lee [Altus, guitar] and a few of us were up and drinking and just hanging out. Lee spilled his drink on himself and was yelling at the driver who hit our bus that he made him spill his drink. I have it on video, it's fucking funny as hell. The guy who hit us was just beside himself when 15 dudes got off the bus and one of them naked. I made a joke saying I bet he thought it was some weird travelling gay bathhouse — a bunch of long-haired dudes and a naked guy. I'm sure it will make it to our DVD, which will probably be out at the end of this year. We got a new trailer and nobody was hurt except Lee, of course, who wants pain and suffering for spilling his drink!" More...

Danish modern "melodeath thrashers" PITCHBLACK, who were recently honored in the "Best Debut Album" category at the Danish Metal Awards, have issued the following update:
"PITCHBLACK has now got a fifth member after Trold [guitar] left two months ago. His unholy name is Krist and he has been around in several Danish metal bands since the early '90s. Among these bands are PSY:CODE, where both Schou and Dag from PITCHBLACK also play. From the start, Krist was our favorite to take over the missing spot in our band, and except a few songs he has already learned all the PITCHBLACK material — VERY, VERY FAST. Like all the other of us, he loves Swedish death metal (and SLAYER of course), he plays fucking fast and he's from our city — Copenhagen! We are indeed also honored to have him join in. He will be a real gift for PITCHBLACK in the future!!"
PITCHBLACK recently posted two new rehearsal-recording-quality tracks on its MySpace page, "Revenge" and "I Return."
New York metallers, SinAriA, issue the following update on their MySpace page:

After 5 months of hardwork, dedication, and studio funds put into our new singer, Nicky Carr has parted ways with the group unexpectedly and without notice as they were just about to finish up the album. All music has been completed for the release of a full length album."
"Erin, Paul, and Rizzo are looking for a replacement ASAP."
"SinAriA has shared the stage and toured with many national acts including Unearth, All That Remains, Dope, 3 Inches of Blood, 36 Crazyfists, Kittie, Biohazard and In This Moment just to name a few." More...
