"Avoidant was formed in Lima, Peru in the winter of 2010 by musicians Daniel Ramón Ibárcena Mollyk and Giancarlo Melgar Novoa. Finding parallels between each other's respective bands they decided to work together and begin developing their own sound, a unique and relentless hybrid of Death Metal, Modern Metal and Shoegaze.
"Through constant interaction between the Ibárcena Brothers and Giancarlo Melgar, the songs surfaced in the form of their first Demo 'Eye-solated Breed.' Few months later a second guitar player for the band was found: Giomar Carrasco. Avoidant released the demo to great reception and within a few months decided it was time to work on new material. In July 2012, the band released a four-track EP entitled 'Morphology.' This recording showcased the evolution of the band seeking more of a progressive sound whists keeping all the musicianship that defined their earlier brand of death metal.
"Later that year, the band managed to release their first music video for the track 'A Catalyst for Destruction.' The band is currently hard at work promoting their newest opus Involution. The recording sessions took place last February and incorporated a 7 string guitar and the addition of new bassist Cesar Rios. Today, New York City based Thinning the Herd releases another new song from pending second studio album, the Steve Albini-recorded "Freedom From The Known." Check out "Sludge" via Stereokiller here. The following press release was also issued about the track:
"The six-minute riff-wrangling anthem 'Sludge' stomps triumphantly through smooth, bluesy metallic rock riffs and thunders with great bass tone on a slow-paced transcendental sort of journey which gives way to stampeding stoner/classic rock jam-outs and back, boasting an almost desert-rock approach while being conceived and recorded in the most massive urban territories of the country.
"Following their debut EP and debut LP, Oceans Rise, founding Thinning the herd vocalist/guitarist Gavin Spielman recruited a new rhythm section in 2012, bringing bassist Wes Edmonds and drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy) on board. The new lineup honed recorded the sophomore album Freedom From The Known at Electrical Audio Studios with studio guru Steven Albini and had filmed a new video for the album, and as they were preparing to release the album, Rick Cimato was tragically killed in a car accident over the 2012 holiday season. True Widow, the Texas trio whose music Pitchfork described as “a vast bone-crunching slab of murky distortion,” is set to release Relapse Records’ debut "Circumambulation" on July 23rd.
“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat. We also did not want to do a double LP. For me, as a listener of records, I get tired of getting up to change sides so many times. We wanted it to fit on a single record so the album clocks in at about 45 minutes as opposed to an hour like we have done in the past.”
The eight-track release was recorded at The Echo Lab in Argyle, Texas with the band reuniting with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar). “We have done all of our recording with him,” added Phillips. “He is able to capture what we do in such a nice, lush way that I couldn’t imagine doing it with anybody else. He is a master at getting that thick sound.”
True Widow, who is rounded out by singer/bass player Nicole Estill and drummer Slim TX, will join label mates Baroness for a handful of dates in May:
May 28 Charleston, SC The Music Farm
May 29 Atlanta, GA Center Stage
May 30 Birmingham, AL The Bottletree Cafe *
May 31 Dallas, TX Trees
June 1 Austin, TX Chaos in Tejas (Mohawk)
* True Widow only
