The ink has finally dried and Nuclear Blast Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of the Bay Area’s indomitable thrash metal band Heathen, which was recently covered in our Sunday Old School column.
Founding member & guitarist Lee Altus comments on the new alliance:
“I'm really happy and couldn't think of a better label for Heathen. I've known people at Nuclear Blast, some of whom have been fans of the band going as far back as the early demo days, and have been friends with them for many years. It's amazing for me to think that throughout this band’s career, every album we recorded has been released on a different label. I can finally say that we have found home. Nuclear Blast has become a mecca for Bay Area thrash bands and we are happy to join our friends and partners in crime Exodus, Death Angel, Testament and Forbidden. Now it's time to get to work on the new album!”
Lead singer David White adds: “I want to thank all the fans for their amazing support; we do not take any of this lightly! Now we move forward with a true Metal record company that really understands what we're all about, 2012 and beyond!!!” More...

Savage Messiah frontman David Silver comments:
"We're looking forward to returning to Holland for a few dates in June. Our first ever show in continental Europe took place in Holland, at Den Pul in Uden when we supported Overkill, so it's exciting to go back and play for the Dutch metal crowd once again. Hopefully we'll be able to announce more European shows soon! Stay posted."

Loudwire.com has posted a news story online reporting that Opeth front man Mikael Akerfeldt has left death metal supergroup Bloodbath. Opeth's latest album "Heritage" (reviewed here) saw a change in style for the band, switching entirely to clean vocals and prog rock.
When we asked Akerfeldt — who by his own admittance has recently been struggling to maintain the power and tone of his screaming — if that would affect future Bloodbath projects, the vocalist dropped the news on us.
“I’m not in Bloodbath,” says Akerfeldt. “They have a new singer, which I can’t say who it is. Bloodbath for me was never a serious project, it was just something I did for fun. We did a few songs on the last North American tour, we did two songs at the very last show because we were touring with Katatonia, so the whole Bloodbath band was there. It’s still fun you know? But I think that some of the other guys in Bloodbath want to take it to the next level, which I don’t really want to do because I’m so busy anyways.”
He continued, “It doesn’t really have to do with anything with my screaming vocals, it’s just that it’s not a progressive project for me. It’s just paying tribute to death metal and I’ve done it for such a long time. And when it stops being fun, I don’t really want to participate. We do things so rarely it’s always been fun. The shows we’ve done have been fun, but I don’t feel the need to do it.”

With a plethora of metal talent already on offer - including Alice Cooper, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Testament, Hatebreed and loads more - Bloodstock Open Air has another addition to it’s main stage, in the form of New Orleans sludge-monsters Crowbar. The organizers of the festival commented:
"The epitome of heavy, Kirk Windstein and co have been showing the world that speed isn’t everything since their debut 'Obedience Thru Suffering' stunned the metal world in 1991 with its downtuned, slow-paced yet punishingly heavy sound. With nine studio albums under their very large belts, Crowbar have mastered the art of the riff, continually delivering irresistible sludgey metal via a sound uniquely their own. With mammoth sludgey slabs such as 'I Despise,' 'All I Had (I Gave),' 'Time He’s Nothing,' 'Like Broken Glass,' 'Nothing' and many more, the Ronnie James Dio Stage will be put to the test at Crowbar’s only UK festival of 2012.
"Over on the Sophie stage, additions come in the form of homegrown extreme symphonic metallers and Metal 2 The Masses winners Saturnian, fellow countrymen and Melo-death thrashers Bloodshot Dawn, as well as Finnish melodic death metallers Re-Armed."

On March 16th, 2012, Motorbreath Entertainment intended to create one of the best lineups featuring bands from the “New Wave of Thrash Metal.” Exmortus, Bonded By Blood, Havok, Speedwolf and Witchaven were on the bill to play Betsy’s Bar at Austin’s annual South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival. Oregon’s Spellcaster offered a style more in line with the New Wave of Classic Metal scene that has, in a sense, run parallel with the new thrash movement.
Besides Corrosion of Conformity who came to town with their crossover thrash, “Animosity” lineup, thrash metal is an endangered species in Austin during this time of the year. When I saw Motorbreath had organized a lineup of such great, young thrash bands, I had to help with promotion. Unfortunately, a number of mishaps led to Betsy’s Bar canceling the show. However, thanks to Alex Campos of local metal marauders, Beyond The Blood, the show went on! More...

One of Poland's top contemporary traditional metal acts, Crystal Viper, is prepared to release "Crimen Excepta" on April 24th via AFM Records, the band's fourth full-length album to date. The following press release was also issued by the band:
"Welcome to the world of Crystal Viper: a world full of Flying Vs, tube amps, leather and chains. The band's powerful old-school sound runs deep with influences hailing from Mercyful Fate, Warlock and Iron Maiden, yet with a dark thrash edge born of Nifelheim persuasion at times, all fueled by frontwoman Marta Gabriel, her commanding vocals akin to Chastain's Leather Leone with a touch of Doro Pesch.
"The follow-up to 2010's acclaimed Legends full-length, Crimen Excepta is a concept album about holy inquisition, black magic and witches, where fiction mixes with historical facts. Recorded with producer Bart Gabriel (Jack Starr's Burning Starr, Sacred Steel, Mortician), Crimen Excepta is inarguably Crystal Viper's darkest and most aggressive material to date. Bringing more of their personal black and death metal influences to the table, even bringing in guest members such as Hell vocalist David Bower who appears on the album's title track, as well as Vader's Piotr 'Peter' Wiwczarek to record a cover of the Vader classic 'Tyrants Of Hell' for a bonus track to the album. Additionally, Crystal Viper recorded 'Ghosts Of Sherwood' -- a theme song for the forthcoming 3D cinema horror movie Robin Hood: Ghosts Of Sherwood -- which also appears as a bonus track to the album.
"As with previous Crystal Viper works, the cover art for Crimen Excepta was painted by legendary French artist Chris Moyen, known from his cooperation with acts such as Slayer, Trivium, Beherit, Blasphemy and more." Check out the opening track from the album, "Witch's Mark," in the player below. More...

Today German sludgecrushers Black Shape of Nexus have polluted the masses with a track from their forthcoming third LP, "Negative Black," via Terrorizer Magazine. Get a gritty, bloody sampling of the outfit’s newest low-fi audio cruelty via the album’s second track “400H” right here. The following press release was issued about the album:
"The band’s first for the eclectic Exile On Mainstream label, Negative Black surges with nearly eighty minutes of the expected crushing Black Shape of Nexus sludge/doom pummel. The album will see North American release on June 5th, on CD in a matte-varnished 6-panel digifile, a 2xLP format with inside/out printed gatefold cover, and deluxe digital download.
"Recorded in the Winter of 2011 and twisted into shape at the mighty Tonmeisterei Studio, Negative Black — an album four years in the making — marks a new step for Black Shape of Nexus, carving a path into their foreseeable future. The album has been eagerly awaited by BSON’s diehard cult fanbase and underground doom/sludge aficionados since the release of their bruising 2008-released Microbarome Meetings 2xLP. While the outfit already bears the reputation for unfurling some of the most destructive but still coherently-flowing sludge metal available, incorporating outside elements of crust, black metal and ambient/soundscape persuasion at times, Negative Black surges to even deeper caverns of auditory obliteration, pummeling you with painfully slow doom and finishing you off with acrid, harsh drones, and giving down-tempo a whole new meaning. "I am truly sorry to have been the catalyst in canceling our appearance at the shows this weekend. I apologize to the promoters who put their time and effort into setting up the shows and the massive headaches that accompany our canceling. I apologize to the fans who bought tickets, booked hotels, scheduled off work, bought plane tickets or made the drive (or were just generally looking forward to it). I apologize to the other bands involved for any inconvenience this has caused them. I apologize to my band mates who re arranged their schedules to travel and took the proper steps to ensure the trip would go smoothly. I have been looking forward to this for a long time, not only to get a chance to play live again but also the opportunity to travel, spend time with good friends and make new ones.

Swedish death metal act Blood Mortized will be releasing the new album "The Key To A Black Heart" via FDA Rekotz on May 18th, 2012. Drummer Mattias Borgh has now posted the following track by track description of the album:
1. Unleashing The Hounds
Album opener which we wrote with one thing in mind: go for your throat, kick you in the guts! A (for us old bastards anyway) fast song with a lot of two beat umpa-umpa drumming. This song has a slow doomy section in the middle which I like a lot, the tempo drops like a stone during this slow break down, which makes it really fun to play.
The spoken part in the middle was recorded into a mobilephone and then the mobile phone was recorded via a microphone, haha, but it did the trick it sounds very much like an old cassette recording haha!
The song title popped up in my head through an old joke we have in Arcana (where I also play) We met this really rich snobby guy when playing a gig and we had a joke about him ordering his Butler to "Unleash the hounds, spare no one" when some one poor person had trespassed his property, haha... The lyrics ended up dealing with some one having ehhh a bad realtionship and a very eeehh strange way of ending that relationship... Rick Rozz plays a great "Rick Rozz going crazy on the whammy bar" guitar solo on this one!
2. The Heretic Possession More...

The progressive rock band Eye takes a trip to the “Center Of The Sun” on their new album. Highlighted by the massive four-part, 20-minute title track, these guys are keeping to the spirit of some of the greats from the ‘70s, like Rush, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. Heavy jamming, floaty vocals, and spacey keyboards are all distinct characteristics of Eye’s sound. If you like long solos and psychedelic overtones, “Center Of The Sun” might be worth digging into. I spoke to drummer Brandon Smith about the new album and how these songs come off in a live environment. More...
