Christian metal favorite Demon Hunter, which was recently named Best Christian Hardcore Band in the About.com 2012 Readers' Choice Awards, is today dropping the band's latest effort "True Defiance," which explores themes of going against the flow in the heavy metal world.
A handful of days prior to the release I got in touch with front man Ryan Clark to get an inside look at what went into "True Defiance," how the band has changed over its now decade long run, and the new music video for "My Destiny." Read on to see what Ryan had to say about the band's recording process and what the group does to stay busy in-between recording and touring. More...
U.S. metal act Iced Earth, currently in China for the first time with shows in Shanghai and Beijing this week, is adding on more shows to the "World Dystopia" tour. The band has also announced the departure of bassist Freddie Vidales leaves the band. The following message was posted on the band's Facebook profile:
"The show in Bangalore, India on June 16th is a first visit to India for the band and the show on August 19th in Limassol marks a much-clamored return to Cyprus, only 8 months after their last show there. The show is being filmed and recorded for an upcoming DVD/CD release.
"The decision of where to do the next IE live album and DVD was not an easy one. We have experienced so many amazing audiences around the world that we really wish we could film them all. However, the electricity and atmosphere of the first show in Cyprus was so killer that we are convinced this is the best place to do our next DVD. Who knows what the future holds? There will be many more albums and touring cycles...your city may be next!
"Full show details as follows:
June 16, 2012 IND-Bangalore // Bangalore Open Air
August 19, 2012 CYP-Limassol // Kourion
"In other news, bass player Freddie Vidales has announced he will leave the band after the Chinese shows this April. Due to the band's massive touring commitments there was immediate need for a replacement and Luke Appleton (of Fury UK, with whom Iced Earth toured in Europe last winter) has stepped up to the plate and will be joining the tour in time for the show in India."
This new live DVD will be the band's first live release with vocalist Stu Block, who joined the band last year, replacing Matt Barlow. Iced Earth is touring in support of the band's new album "Dystopia" (reviewed here).
Seattle based monolithic sludge band Anhedonist is streaming another new track from its new album "Netherwards." You can listen to that new track, "Saturnine," by heading over to Axes To Grind. Anhedonist have a very chilling blend of doom and death on "Netherwards," which was just released via Dark Descent Records. Also, check out a video upload of the track "Estrangement" which the band has been streaming.

Swedish black metal horde Watain has been forced to cancel the first five shows (including one headlining performance) of the group's previously announced North American tour — scheduled to start tomorrow (April 11) in Columbus, Ohio — due to delays in the visa process.
Comments the band in a collective statement: “It’s not the first time the law stands in our way trying to prevent us from doing our work, and just like all the previous times it will lay broken and humiliated eventually. We are content we will be victorious, meanwhile we ask all our U.S. supporters to have patience and prepare themselves for the coming of Watain!”
The band's upcoming tour dates with Behemoth, The Devil's Blood, and In Solitude are as follows: More...
A389 Recordings will be joining forces with Toronto Canada's Vilipend to release the band's new full-length LP "Inamorata." The following press release was also issued:
"The band's sound combines metalcore ala Turmoil and Deadguy, crossed with the tortured desperation and the technical proficiency/reckless abandon of 90's nihilism of bands such as Buzz'oven and Eyehategod.
"Since forming in 2007, Vilipend has maintained a punishing writing and recording schedule. By 2008, the band had released the live-off-the-floor debut EP, Northern Hostility, which was quickly followed by 2009's Love Left To Rot... EP. More...

Progressive death metal act Barren Earth has checked in with the following recap of the band's recent tour dates in Finland:
"With Barren Earth’s Finnish Tour almost complete it is now time to reflect upon some of the gigs and the circumstances surrounding them.
"The opening gig of the tour, which was also the album launch gig, took place at one of the more prestigious venues in Finland, namely the Tavastia club. The gig was originally booked to Dom where we’d played a couple of times before. Unfortunately, Dom decided to close shop and all its gigs were transferred to Virgin Oil Co. As it happened, this resulted in several double bookings, including our date. The reggae act The Capital Beat was deemed to have a bigger status than Barren Earth and therefore it was up to us to find a new venue. Luckily, Tavastia neatly happened to have a cancellation for Thursday March 15. We jumped at the possibility to play there and grabbed the date.
"The week prior to the gig was spent rehearsing, either individually or collectively. There was quite a lot of rehearsing to do, since we hadn’t played together in almost 6 months. Additionally, we would be playing a whole bunch of new songs which had never been played live before. There was some speculation on whether we’d even be able to play some of those songs live because of their intricate nature… More...
After years of angst-ridden anticipation from a ravenous fanbase, Denver's grindcore gargantuans Catheter are preparing to unleash their first full-length album since 2005, celebrating 15 years of perpetuating their brutal 303-style grind. The following press release was issued:
"The follow-up to the band's 2005-released sophomore album, 'Dimension 303,' amidst an incredible arsenal of split releases, EPs and demos over the years, Catheter's new opus is so obliteratingly heavy that upon first listen you'll quickly forgive them for the delay since the last album, and immediately tear your own head off in utter joy. As always appropriately entitled, Southwest Doom Violence surges with Catheter's pissed-off style, wrangling 17 cataclysmic tunes in only twice as many minutes, an immediate adrenaline-booster for fans of classic, ripping grindcore in the tradition of Repulsion, Terrorizer, Phobia, early Napalm Death, with crust and doom metal infiltrating the mix.
"Southwest Doom Violence is confirmed for North American release this May 1st, once again via Selfmadegod Records, who released Catheter's Preamable To Oblivion and Dimension 303 albums. Check out the cover art by Adam Azeris/Milk and Gasoline at this location." More...
Bludgeoning hardcore, bruising grooves and bittersweet syrupy sludge elbowed the eardrums of Backstage Live’s patrons as they paid witness to two of the standard bearers of ‘90s metal—Crowbar and Prong. Although both bands look and sound very different, both artists lent a hand in sculpting the modern metal sound. The chunky rhythms and mechanized motions of Prong helped direct a stampede of Nu Metal, core and other rhythmic mosh-oriented bands, while Crowbar brought attention to a strong metal scene in NOLA and helped define a more extreme form of doom metal called sludge.
Crowbar and Prong rose to prominence through videos on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball (when it still mattered). These singles were part of the metal education for many in attendance, so the enthusiasm displayed during Prong’s “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” and Crowbar’s “All I Had (I Gave)” came as no surprise. Although those videos built a mountain of exposure for both bands, neither group has achieved headline status like former touring mates Pantera, Sepultura and Danzig, which rang true in the small amount of ticket sales produced. Vampires Everywhere! is proud to announce the band's sophomore album, "Hellbound and Heartless," will be available on June 19th via Hollywood Waste Records. This release showcases the darker side of Vampires Everywhere!, focusing on message-driven lyrics and deriving musical influence from industrial rock icons such as Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie.
"Hellbound and Heartless" was co-produced by the band and Mike Sarkisyan and Tommy Decker, both members of Grammy-nominated, alternative-metal act Spineshank. "I Can't Breathe," the first track to be revealed from the new album, recently premiered with Alternative Press at this location. Vampires Everywhere! is eager to get more new tunes out and will be releasing more information on "Hellbound and Heartless" in the coming weeks, so fans are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled.
In support of the release, the band will be on the full Vans Warped Tour. A full list of dates can be seen below. More...

Graf Orlock's new EP, "Los Angeles," hits stores today via the band's own label, Vitriol Records.
In honor of the release, Vice's music channel Noisey.com has posted an interview with Graf Orlock guitarist/mastermind Jason Schmidt and an exclusive premiere of the "Los Angeles" epic closer, "Quick on the Trigger." Read the interview and stream the track right here. The following press release was also issued:
"World-renowned for their celluloid-obsessed hardcore, sometimes dubbed 'cinema-grind,' LA's Graf Orlock bases their work primarily on action flicks of the 80s and 90s. Of the band's concept and sound, MetalSucks has declared, 'Not only is their music as mercilessly murderous as you'd want it to be, but their incorporation of elements from action films in brilliant.'
"Also revered for the elaborate artwork and packaging of their releases - last year's Doombox EP was given the title 'Packaging of the Century' by Revolver Magazine - Graf Orlock continues the trend with Los Angeles, whose cover art consists of three separate 'shooting range targets' riddled with actual bullet holes. Fresh off a tour of Japan, Graf Orlock embark on a full European tour in June."

Finnish crusaders of epic heathen metal, Moonsorrow, and Century Media Records are proud to announce a worldwide deal. In regards to the signing, the band comments: "Moonsorrow is thrilled to start working with Century Media, a label that is home to many fellow artists already! We never make our music half way or with compromises and we know our art is in good hands with people who have the same mentality in running a record label. Now, after a year since the release of our last album we are ready to begin creating something new. The new chapter in this epic journey of Moonsorrow!"
Jens Prueter, Head Of A&R at Century Media Europe also says: "I followed Moonsorrow since their early days and I'm very proud to welcome them now to Century Media Records. They'll be in good family along with their countrymen Finntroll, Turisas, and Insomnium. Two of the band members already have some history with us: Henri Sorvali is also part of Finntroll (even if he rarely plays live with any band) and Marko Tarvonen once moved from drums to guitar in the overlooked Death Metal allstar band Chaosbreed, who released an album that is as 'brutal' as its title.
"Much has been said about the dark soul of Finnish Metal. A sound that is hard to copy for any non-domestic band. A sound out of endless woods, deepest sorrow and epic majesty. Moonsorrow is probably the most epic of all Finnish bands, not only because most of their songs are over 10 minutes long (sometimes even over 30 minutes), but mainly because they are able to tell stories that are older than written culture. You can follow them even if you don't understand a single Finnish word. Moonsorrow is able to take you on journey through heathen times. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who can't wait for the next chapter." More...

French death metallers Insain have checked in with the following announcement about recruiting a new drummer:
"We, Insain, are proud to announce the addition of Benoit Peichert (Years Of Tyrants, The Bukkaker, ex-Darkall Slaves) as our new drummer. Sangli is, obviously, still Insain’s skin beater but Benoit will handle the fast, brutal and deadly job, on the road and in the studio, until Sangli has fully recovered.
"In the meantime, we're delighted to announce we’ve started the writing process for a new MCD that will be recorded early next year, with Benoit behind the drum kit, for a tentative release by mid-2013 on Kaotoxin records.
"Until then, get 'Spiritual Rebirth,' on CD and limited DigiPak edition (100 hand-numbered copies) through Kaotoxin at this location."

The band is now ready to give fans their first preview of this upcoming release with the premiere of the new single, "Ideomotor." Head over to Guitar World.com here to hear this track. The following press release was also issued:
"Produced by Christian Donaldson (Cryptopsy) and mixed by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Dark Tranquillity, Suicide Silence), 'Prisoners' picks right up where 2009's 'Lullabies' for the Dormant Mind left off, with soaring melodies over complex metal passages that fans of thinking-man's metal can appreciate. Throughout their North American tour with Kittie (which kicks-off today!), The Agonist will be selling digital download cards that feature two tracks from Prisoners : 'Ideomotor' and the previously limited edition EP-only track 'The Escape.'
"These tracks will be available for immediate download, with the remainder of the album available on release date, so be sure to catch the band on the road with the heavy metal maidens in Kittie. Dates for this trek are below, so check to see when they'll be coming to a city near you!" More...
Metal Injection has released the second episode of a series which turns the camera onto the people working behind the scenes in the music industry, titled "On The Record." This is the second of a five-part series focusing on "A Decade Of Metal."
Each week, some of the heavyweights that make the heavy metal industry tick will weigh in on the biggest subjects to occur in the metal scene in the last decade and this edition focuses on the ever growing amount of sub-genres in heavy metal that formed in the last decade, with genres such as metalcore, deathcore, pirate metal, re-thrash and more "out there" genres like crabcore and Sumeriancore discussed.
Legendary grind merchants Phobia are set to scathe the masses with their fifth studio offering, "Remnants of Filth," this June. Produced and mixed by Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed) at Visceral Sound Studios in Bethesda, Maryland and engineered by Mike Harrison at Winter Skies Productions in San Antonio, Texas, "Remnants Of Filth" offers up 18 pile-driving, socio-political grind hymns in 19 minutes.
Slated to drop on June 5th through Willowtip Records, the band –- vocalist Shane “The Pain” Mclachlan, bassist Calum MacKenzie, drummer Bryan Fajardo and guitarists Dorian Rainwater and CC Loessin – have crafted one of the most punishing efforts of their winding discography of wrath.
Comments Mclachlan of the offering: “Remnants Of Filth is a brutal, in-depth grind record that I feel represents what this band is all about, from past to present. This is total brutal grindcore at its best with nothing less than the 100% punk-as-fuck attitude to compliment what this band is all about!”

Eths' new album "III" (reviewed here) is out now worldwide, except in North America where it will hit the stores on June 5th. Season of Mist has issued the following announcement about re-issuing the band's debut album:
"This is the perfect moment to make the band's debut full-length 'Sôma' available for their fast growing fan community once again. When 'Sôma' was originally released in 2004, it became an overnight success and catapulted the quintet from Marseilles not only on the covers of nearly every music magazine in France, but also outsold established metal-headliners like Children of Bodom or Cradle of Filth there.
"The pure raw and undiluted energy and anger bursting out from 'Sôma' and the stunning vocals of singer Candice make this album a milestone until today. Now re-issued with four previously unreleased exclusive bonus tracks from the 2003 demo sessions, this version of 'Sôma' is a must have for old and new fans!" More...
Daylight Dies has issued the following announcement about the band's upcoming fourth album:
"We’re pleased to finally announce the fourth studio Daylight Dies album will be titled A Frail Becoming. The album is currently being mixed in Sweden by the fantastic Jens Bogren (who was also responsible for mixing Dismantling Devotion and Lost to the Living). Song titles, in no particular order:
- The Pale Approach
- Dreaming of Breathing
- Hold on to Nothing
- An Heir to Emptiness
- A Final Vestige
"We’ve crossed mountains both personally and creatively in the path of creating A Frail Becoming, and we’re exceptionally proud of the result. It is by far the most mature and diverse collection of music we’ve created. We’ll have another update once the mixing is complete and the album artwork is completed."

Set for release on May, 8th, 2012, the record was produced by Dave Otero of Denver's Flatline Audio and according to a press release "sees the band exploring innovative new techniques in song writing without abandoning their signature formula of confrontational audio wreckage and self-loathing lyrical content."
Vocalist Travis Ryan adds: "We just returned from a great European tour where we played a ton of new songs which were received extremely well by everyone over there! So much so that we decided to premiere the second sample track of our new album Monolith of Inhumanity on a European website for all our fans and the new fans we just made during this last tour! We had a blast and we hope you all get a kick out of the new track 'Lifestalker.' This new album is light years ahead of the rest of our albums and we look forward to coming back to Europe to decapitate you all with it!"
The Virginia melodic death metal veterans in Arsis have announced Shawn Priest as the full-time replacement for recently departed drummer, Mike VanDyne. Priest, who has toured with Arsis in the past, will be behind the kit for the band’s upcoming fifth studio album.
Commented Priest, “After several major tours with Arsis since 2008, I am more than happy to take the position of full-time drummer. These guys have become some of my best friends and based on the new material we've been putting together, I think the new record will be one of the best and most extreme Arsis releases to date. Get stoked people.”
“I am beyond thrilled with the pre-production for the new album and the addition of Shawn Priest on drums,” said guitarist/vocalist, James Malone. “Shawn has done many tours for Arsis and felt we it was time to give him the respect he deserves and bring him on as the full-time drummer. Shawn's input into the new songs has made them more intense than I could have ever imagined.”
“We weren't looking for a drummer who robotically plays a thousand miles an hour,” added bassist, Noah Martin. “Anyone who's seen us with Shawn knows he's capable of playing pretty much anything, but with tremendous feel. We've put him through hell, hiring him to fill in on multiple tours over the years, and we're glad we can welcome him to the fold. More...

Tribune has taken metal to a new level in 2012 with the multi-metal genre blender displayed on latest album "Elder Lore/The Dark Arts" (released March 20th, 2012 via Corpse Corrosion Music). "The Succubus" is the first single from the 8 track beast and PureGrain TV is pleased to present the exclusive world premiere of the new music video. Filmed and directed by Terry Anderson and Tribune, the clip shows the band's lighter side while keeping it heavy.
Sweden’s melodic gloom lords October Tide have officially inked a worldwide deal with Pulverised Records. Now featuring bassist Mattias Norrman (ex-Katatonia, ex-Interment, etc,) and vocalist Alexander Högbom (Volturyon, Spasmodic), who take the place of former members Pierre Stam and Tobias Netzell respectively, the morose collective is currently working on the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2010’s Candlelight-issued "A Thin Shell full-length," which will once again explore the beauty of darkness and sorrow. The album will be recorded at Black Lounge Studio (Scar Symmetry, Carnal Forge, In Mourning, Centinex, etc) in Sweden later this Spring under the helm of Jonas Kjellgren.
Commented October Tide drummer Robin Bergh: "We are extremely pleased to sign with Pulverised Records for the next album and beyond. During the negotiations for the new deal we noticed that Roy [Yeo,] Calvin [Chiang] and the entire Pulverised crew were seriously thrilled about the band and the art we create, hence we are confident that this doomish union will bring October Tide to the next level. Our new lineup feels utterly satisfying and we are more than ready for the future to come. We are currently finishing up the writing process for the yet untitled fourth full-length which will be recorded during May and June. This upcoming October Tide recording will surely be a deadly doom metal masterpiece, mark my words!" More...
