Venom Reveals New Box Set Details

Venom formed in 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Coming to prominence towards the end of the new wave of British heavy metal, Venom's first two albums - "Welcome To Hell" (1981) and "Black Metal" (1982) - are considered a major influence on thrash metal and extreme metal in general. Venom's second album proved influential enough that its title was used as the name of the extreme metal subgenre of black metal. The band classic line-up trio of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon recorded two further studio albums - "At War With Satan" (1984) and "Possessed" (1985) - and live album "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (1986). Often cited by bands such as Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost and Mayhem as major influences, they are one of the most revered bands of their generation. Venom are still fronted by original singer/bassist Cronos and headline festivals all over the globe and continue to release new music.

This coming May 31st sees the release of "In Nomine Satanas" via BMG – a deluxe vinyl box set that celebrates Venom’s 40th anniversary and features the original Neat Records recordings from their 1981 debut "Welcome To Hell" to "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," the live recording of their mythical appearance at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1985. All of the albums are remastered from the original tapes with embossed covers, posters and inserts like their original first editions. They’re all now on colour configured vinyl too. The set also includes a 12“ book detailing the history of the band featuring new interviews with all three members, written by respected journalist Dom Lawson. More...

Cellar Darling Posts New Music Video Online

On March 22nd, Switzerland's Cellar Darling will release their new concept masterpiece "The Spell," which tells the story of a girl who falls in love with death and to get their loyal fans involved, the band had decided to let their online followers cast votes on which song from the tracklist they would like to see released as next single. The winner was the 7-minute long "Drown" and today, you'll get to see the hauntingly beautiful music video that was once again animated by Costin Chioreanu.

"For this single, we wanted to do something different", the band states. "And we felt that our striking one-word tracklist is perfect for a fan vote. To let people decide which song they want to hear next based on only the title and length of the song, and to take us out of the decision process for once. To our surprise -- and joy -- the song that is probably the least "commercial" of all of them was chosen and we think that is kind of cool… we are proud of every chapter of this concept album, so let's go ahead and release a non-single single, for once. We hope you enjoy it!" More...

Fleshgod Apocalypse Reveals New Album Details

Italian orchestral-death metal and renaissance revivalists Fleshgod Apocalypse will make their triumphant return this year with the release of their fifth studio album, "Veleno," on May 24th via Nuclear Blast Records. Today, the band has unveiled the record's debut single, "Sugar," via a music video, the album artwork and track listing. You can check out the video for "Sugar" below.

Francesco Paoli on working with director Giovanni Bucci: "I met Giovanni Bucci a couple of years ago, while collaborating on his own band ODDKO. We soon became good friends, so we started talking about having him as director for Fleshgod’s new videos. He is a true visionary, with amazing directing and production skills. He’s been making music videos for bands like Korn, and he also has a shining career in the movie industry. We all agreed that he would’ve been the key to a huge step forward for us, visually and artistically, especially on a video like this, which was also extremely complex to produce and shoot. The result is on your screen now, and it's better than any description. Just hit the play button and enjoy." More...

Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal

Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.

For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.) Before the band took to the stage, I had the pleasure of meeting the group and discussing a number of subjects with frontman Sully Erna and drummer Shannon Larkin including their new album, "When Legends Rise," the hilarious music video for "Bulletproof" and how people have reacted to a slightly softer new sound. Phil Anselmo To Debut New Band At Psycho Las Vegas

Former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo, who's also know for a number of other bands including Down, Superjoint Ritual and Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, has announced that he will debut his latest project, En Minor, at the upcoming Psycho Las Vegas event, which will take place from August 16th - 18th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Speaking with DamnationVault.com, Anselmo says, "I will say that the darkest, heaviest, most miserable shit I’ve ever written I have not released and that’s a band called En Minor. I’ve never put it out, man. And I still... I don’t know if I’m getting cold feet or not, man. It’s not party music, it’s not good time music. People are asking me to do gigs with it and shit like that and I just don’t know if it’s going to translate the way people might envision because they haven’t heard the music, it’s so hard for me to explain it. It’s heart-wrenching shit, man. It’s very hard for me to just explain and it’s also very hard for me to... It’s tough because no one’s heard it and I don’t know if people should fuckin’ hear it, man."

He continues: "It is, I guess, the truest, darkest record I’ve ever done in my life and I’m just not sure about it. I’m not sure about it. I think the musicianship is great, I love the band I have surrounding me... I just... When I do a project, I go 1000%. So like, with the last Illegals record, it was a death metal style, death metal flavor of the moment that was really reigning supreme when we were writing the stuff. So that’s where I went with that and stayed true to it stylistically. The same can be said with En Minor."

The song was premiered at last year's Bloodstock Open Air festival and is expected to be included on their upcoming seventh album, the title of which has not yet been revealed. Guitarist Nige Rockett comments:

"We are super stoked to finally get some new material out to the fans, the first single to come from the new album is entitled 'A Perfect Day to Die' and is a little nod to our sadly departed friends from 'Motorhead' who were a major influence for Onslaught from the very beginning. The track has been mixed by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Udo, Evergrey) and produced by ourselves and Pete Hinton (Saxon) it sounds so heavy with a super aggressive vibe, it really has a ton of potential!" Godsmack Makes Legends And London Rise

For over twenty years, Massachusetts rockers Godsmack has been putting out acclaimed and relatable music, appealing to fans of rock, metal and even mainstream listeners. Last year, the band celebrated the twentieth anniversary of their eponymous debut album, by releasing a new studio album, "When Legends Rise." The record has seen a slight shift in sound but has done well commercially. But how do the new songs sound live? Let's find out!

Supporting Godsmack on this European trek was New Zealand rock/metal band Like A Storm. Having seen them twice before at Graspop, I know that these boys can throw down as hard as anyone. Their selling point that separates them from other young bands is their use of the didgeridoo (an instrument native to New Zealand and Australia.) The unique take on hard rock makes them the perfect choice to support Godsmack, as they're not too far from the headlining bands sound but far enough to offer the crowd something different. A storming performance from the Kiwis surely made them more than a few new fans tonight and hopefully it won't be too long until they return to Britain. More...
