Meet Janne Wirman, virtuoso metal keyboardist; leader of Warmen, former collaborator with Masterplan and Kotipelto, and full-time melody man for Finnish heavyweights Children Of Bodom. As 2012 dawned, so too did the band's 15th anniversary, which - despite last year's acclaimed "Relentless Reckless Forever" - prompted a retrospective live setlist on a sweeping tour across North America, leaving no stone in the catalogue unturned. Thus it seemed only appropriate for Janne, near the tour's end in Montreal, Quebec, to reflect a bit on the past with me prior to the performance. Here's how it went down: More...
Tearing onto the scene in 2010 with “Exoplanet,” The Contortionist impressed many with their aggressive brand of progressive metal. They were unfairly handed down the “deathcore” tag by many, and though there were some sonic comparisons to that style, the band was far more than that generic label. The band were at their best with varying tempos and calmer, ambient sections on songs like the three-part title track and “Flourish.” Currently working on their second album, scheduled to be released in late spring/early summer, I got the opportunity to speak to guitarist Robby Baca about how the album is coming along so far. Transubstans Records will be releasing the debut album "Hur Svart Kan Det Vara?" from Ett Rop Pa Hjalp on March 14th. Ett Rop Pa Hjalp is a Swedish band with a complete 70's rock/metal vibe, whose name literally translates into "a cry for help" in English. This new debut album of theirs, whose title means "how smart can that be" in English, has material that the band recorded a while ago that is now finally seeing widespread release. Ett Rop Pa Hjalp is streaming the new track "Den Siste Altruisten" below, plus there's an upload of "Folj Mit Liv" afterwards, a song about people's interaction on social media.
Extreme metallers Jungle Rot are currently out on the road melting faces and burning down cities in support of the new album "Kill On Command" alongside the legendary Deicide and Abigail Williams.
On the eve of the tour's kickoff I got in touch with Jungle Rot's vocalist Dave Matrise to chat about the impending North American devastation and the band's excitement to be crossing the border into Canada to spread the "Kill On Command" wrath to new audiences. Check out the full interview below, in which Matrise also talks about shooting the "Blood Ties" music video and the band's plans for upcoming tours throughout the rest of the year. More...

We're sharing the bill with great bands in every city, and are honored to be playing with acts like Sabaton, Virgin Steel, Brocas Helm, and Skull Fist along the way. We promise to play at full blast and full intensity every night...the only challenge will be playing with hangovers and sore necks!"
Relatively new faces in the metal world, A Sound of Thunder is fronted by powerful lead vocalist Nina Osegueda. Lead guitarist Josh Schwartz and drummer Chris Haren founded the group 2008. Nina joined in 2009, and was followed by bass and keyboard player, Jesse Keen, in 2010. In less than two years, A Sound of Thunder recorded and released an EP, a charity single benefiting the West Memphis Three, and a full length self-produced album. The band has performed throughout the US, and opened for such high profile bands as Accept, Sabaton, Firewind, Primal Fear and Doro. More...

We needed someone who really loved metal and who was going to be committed to trying to do something great on the stage and in the studio. When Dave first started playing our songs it was like he’d been playing them with us forever and it felt good. With less than a week before Austin, Texas kicks off its annual music, film and interactive festival know as SXSW, Metal Underground offers our readers a series of interviews to promote Motorbreath Entertainment's Showcase, which Metal Underground has proudly sponsored. The Motorbreath concert is the only showcase at this year’s festival that primarily adheres to bands playing thrash and speed metal.
Hells Headbangers recording artist, Speedwolf is the first group featured in our ongoing coverage. Since 2008, the group has shaken the peaks of its native Denver mountains with punk-addled speed metal and a heavy dose of Motorhead. In the tradition of Motorhead, the group’s name and album cover references motorcycles. Their members obviously don’t turn into human-animal hybrids, as their album cover depicts, but they aren’t posers when it comes to riding. Due to the roar of his bike, vocalist Reed Bruemmer nearly missed my call. He caught it just in time, however, to convey how “revved” up he is about the group’s upcoming SXSW performances. More...

Earlier this year, San Diego’s brutal death metal/slam outfit Pathology completed a successful 3-week west coast headlining tour that also went down into Mexico for 4 shows.
“Our west coast tour was fun and successful,” states drummer Dave Astor. “We really got to play some smaller markets on the run and I was happy to see some old and new fans come out, especially to some of these more rural areas that we’ve never played. Hopefully we can do this as intensive west coast run once a year.”
Next on the band’s agenda is more touring in support of last fall’s "Awaken to the Suffering" album. Pathology took the initiative of doing headlining shows leading to a request for a slightly different type of tour this April with Rose Funeral and The World We Knew, getting into some alternative venues on the east coast and Midwest.
“I’m excited for this,” continues Dave. “We’ve been proud to tour with some of our influences but we also know our band appeals to a different and younger audience so we’ll be bringing some brutal, slamming death metal to these shows.” More...

Guitarist Greg Burgess had this to say about the new album, "With 'Formshifter,' I think we kept the sound a lot of our fans love about us, but achieved them through certain compositional challenges. Be it style, or genre mixing, I believe that we seamlessly applied certain elements we didn't have on Fragments, and it added a color and dimension we didn't have before."
Guitarist Ryan Glisan adds, "This album to me indicates the future of the band but nods to our past as well. It, to me, is more of where I have envisioned our band being since I started the band a couple years back, it relies on similar songwriting structures and musicality but adds more groove and memorable riffing than our previous efforts." Symphonic metal act Upon Wings released its debut single "The Dream" today on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Google Music. You can also stream the track below. “The Dream” is the result of a collaboration between classically-trained dramatic mezzo-soprano Anne Erickson and Grammy-nominated producer Glenn Brown (Spinal Tap, The Verve Pipe).
Upon Wings hails from the U.S. and can be described as symphonic metal with a classical influence. After creating the idea for Upon Wings, singer Anne Erickson – who is also a music journalist for Gannett, Gibson Guitar, Loudwire and radio host and managing editor of Audio Ink Radio – entered the studio with Glenn Brown to put the ideas onto tape.
“I’m so excited about the first single from UPON WINGS,” declares Erickson. “It seems this is the right time to share ‘THE DREAM. I’ve been singing classical, musical theater and opera music since I was 4 years old, and that led me on a path to pursue music journalism and rock radio. Now, it feels great to be back on the other side and releasing a song that brings together the classical sounds that I remember from my childhood with elements of symphonic metal. I thank everyone who gives ‘THE DREAM’ a listen!” More...

"Anger Denial Acceptance" will be the band's fourth album and follow up to the 2003 release, "Self-Destructive Pattern." "This is by far the proudest I have ever been of any Spineshank record," says Sarkysian. "Anger Denial Acceptance is the darkest and the most honest this band has ever been."

Drummer and original member Kosta Zafiriou has split with Pink Cream 69 in an effort to concentrate on new band Unisonic (featuring Ex-Helloween founder Kai Hansen and vocalist Michael Kiske). He will be replaced by his long time drum technician Mike Schmidt, who also played with Sunstorm.
Zaifiriou explained his departure:
It was a very hard decision to leave the band I co-founded back in 1987, but I am sure this is the right step. Due to my various activities with my company Bottom Row plus being the drummer and manager of my new band UNISONIC, more and more I felt I was retarding PC 69´s career. Chris is a great drummer and a good friend of the band since many years, which makes him the perfect match for PINK CREAM 69. I wish the guys only the best and look forward to see the first show with him - as a visitor, enjoying the songs that accompanied me half of my life!

The vibe within the band is very enthusiastic and creative. There are far too many strong songs by Dennis (Ward), David (Readman) and myself to pick from. There will be eleven of them on the album plus a couple of bonus tracks for the different markets and formats. We also will have guest appearances by two famous musicians on the new record – both fans of the band. More on that soon!
