Channeling the very essence of the underground is Rashid of solo act Zebulon Kosted, who has put out over 100 releases and been a champion of his local metal scene for years. Covering everything from dark ambient to extreme black metal, Rashid's discography covers a wide swathe of the musical spectrum.
The latest in the Zebulon Kosted line of albums is now nearing release, bearing the unusually distinctive title of "The Corrupt Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko." In his typically a-typical fashion, Rashid recorded this album without writing a single note prior to entering the studio. Commenting on the gamble, he stated "I was very stressed about it the last couple of days before I went into the studio, but I was excited as well, it was a new personal challenge and test. The end result was a single 50 minute long black metal track that far surpasses my old releases."
Read on to see what's been happening with the band over the last few years, Rashid's new label Al-Hadid Records, and some interesting shows that can only be experienced with underground local bands. More...

Newly reformed act Metadox (featuring former members of DesDemon) has checked in with the following press release about recording new material and gearing up for live shows:
"In this day and age, it's hard to find musicians willing to make the best decisions and have the patience to do things the right way. New York’s revitalized Metadox is one such band. Composed of some powerhouse players from the New York metal scene, the band is poised for it's re-emergence.
"Metadox was formerly signed to Metal Mayhem Music, however a deal went south and the band was put on hiatus by founder and songwriter Frank Tosi. Frank co-founded DesDemon and pursued his talents with DesDemon. Metadox’s past success is well documented, sharing the stage with Dragonforce, Kamelot, Katatonia, Moonspell, Therion, God Forbid, Between the Buried and Me, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Daylight Dies, as well as countless others bands in the NY, NJ, CT area scene.
"After the demise of DesDemon, and a well needed respite, Frank Tosi felt now was the right time to give Metadox the chance it deserves with some truly high caliber musicians.
"Frank Tosi is joined by former DesDemon bandmates, Ronald Porcelli, Mike Marrone, and long time friend Bob Neal from Stamford CT. Vocalist was cast by posting an open call on all social media and metal news sites, which Metadox received a flourish of replies. After a short search, the band choose former Livesay vocalist Geoff Rose. Geoff brings a traditional metal vocal styling with a fresh modern approach.
"Metadox have begun pre-production recordings. The new and originally written material has taken on a new life and fire, forging something really exciting!" More...

Pitch Black Records has checked in with the following announcement about offering a free sampler in celebration of the label's fifth anniversary:
"When we were putting together our first release back in 2008 we knew that we were going to continue doing this for a long time afterwards. This was obvious from the sheer passion and dedication we found ourselves putting into that first release and this hasn’t changed one bit for any of our releases that followed later on.
"Five years might not sound much (or even 20 releases for that matter) but hey, we never bragged about being the biggest label ever! Besides, we pride ourselves in that what we lack in quantity we most certainly make up in quality! Each and every one of our releases has received a fair share of enthusiastic reviews, many of those releases have been included in 'best of the year' lists by various writers and reviewers while others have received significant distinctions. Of course we’re not forgetting the fans and how they have all embraced Pitch Black Records and our releases so a HUGE thanks to you as well for being part of this.
"During the last five years we have established some good solid relationships and friendships, both with business partners as well as with the artists we have had the honor of working with and releasing their work. Even more exciting things are happening this year, some of which include an important new distribution deal for North America (details to be announced soon), some great new releases (including new albums by Illnath and Arrayan Path) our new and revamped online store already in operation and our just-released free mobile app (currently available for Android, coming soon for iPad and iPhone). After signing with Relapse Records in late 2011, this week Auckland, New Zealand-based death metal horde Ulcerate will enter hometown MCA Studios to record a fourth LP.
Ulcerate’s founding drummer Jamie Saint Merat states, “After almost exactly twelve months of exhaustive work we are now in the final stages of preparation for our fourth album. This week we enter the studio to track what has become a violent, monolithic piece of work.”
The yet-to-be-named fourth opus from Ulcerate follows two albums on Willowtip Records -- 2009’s "Everything Is Fire" and 2011’s "The Destroyers Of All" -- not to mention the 2007 Neurotic Records debut "Of Fracture And Failure." The following press release was also issued about Ulcerate:
"The band downs wave after tumultuous wave of dissonant riffing and a nonstop barrage of leveling, technical percussion with organic brute force and otherworldly discordance, topped with a purely disdainful, guttural lyrical attack. Their brutally-charged, sinister death metal bears an innovative, blackened edge resulting in a catastrophic concoction not dissimilar to Mitochondrion, Mithras, Portal, Glorior Belli and Deathspell Omega. New York death metal legends Immolation have unveiled the artwork and track listing for their upcoming ninth full-length album "Kingdom of Conspiracy." The cover imagery was brought to life this time by no less than Pär Olofsson (Immortal, Abysmal Dawn).
“The figures in the artwork have all been bound and chained and have their eyes and mouths sewn shut symbolically, showing the chilling of speech and the intentional blinding of the masses,” explains guitarist Robert Vigna. “They all make up the huge ominous structure behind them, which is symbolic of the growing security state as well as our failing structures today, and how they are slowly and methodically consuming and controlling us all. It has a very Orwellian feel to it, which is what we were going for since the album is very dark in a slightly different way.”
In regards to Kingdom Of Conspiracy’s lyrical content he continues: "The album deals with the world today and the slow unraveling and breakdown of our societies and the systems and structures behind them. It speaks of the human side to all this and how we have all lost our way and have fed into these very systems that are slowly coming apart. This is the common thread running throughout the album and the cover paints a very dark picture of the future, where these systems have completely absorbed our world, and our freedoms and we have become a part of the very fabric of these structures that we have created. Each song is a symptom of this mass sickness that has brought the world to the point it is at now, and we paint a very bleak picture of this slow and gradual breakdown and the human failures that sped this process along. This is the Kingdom of Conspiracy." More...

According to the website novinky.cz, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe was acquitted by the Prague Municipal Court for charges of manslaughter stemming from incident of May 24, 2010, which led to a death of a fan. Blythe faced up to ten years in prison for the incident where he allegedly threw a fan from the stage, though video footage showed that he was clearly innocent and the Court agreed.
According to the article, the Court ruled that Blythe did not commit an act of crime. In the final argument before the decision, Blythe told the Court: "I would like to thank the family of Daniel Nosek for not attacking me in the press and for their kind words to me in this court. I am very sorry for their loss. Daniel was a fan of my band. I had no wish to harm him. He was just a boy and I wish he was still here. If, ultimately the Czech legal system sentences me to prison, I will do my sentence like a man. If I am to remain free, I will do my best to insure that conditions at this concert will not occur again with my band and other bands so that the fans will remain safe. I have searched for an answer to this situation. The only one I can find is that it was a tragic, horrible accident."
