DeathMetal.Org has posted an exclusive premier of the title track off of "Extrinsic Pathway" from Austin, TX-based traditional death metal foursome Morgengrau. With just under a week left until the album's April 2nd release through Blind God Records, listen to the title cut at this location.
Since its inception in 2010, Morgengrau has established itself as a formidable live act, garnering particular attention due to being fronted by former Ignitor frontwoman, Erika (Tandy) Morgengrau, and ex-Manifestation drummer Reba Carls. Both women are well known in the Texas scene for their fierce performances, with Erika having fronted several other well-known bands of various genres, including Autumn Tears. The band focuses conceptually on death worship in all its forms: war, occultism, and horror.
A lot is brewing in the world of The Reticent, including new members added to the live line-up, a free EP and the next full-length. Recently, The Reticent recruited former Oracle guitarist Robert Kerns as the new resident lead guitarist. This has allowed the band to return to the stage and begin playing some select live dates. Show updates can be found at the band's Facebook Page.
Fans of the band will be keen to hear from mastermind Chris Hathcock that there are not one but two albums in the works this year. The first is an EP of unique interpretations of some yet to be disclosed cover songs. The EP will be titled "Artifice" and will be made available for free via download through the Heaven & Hell Records' website for a limited time.
Said Hathcock, "I wanted to do something where I could explore some lesser known songs I enjoy and take some more well known songs and rearrange them. I'm not at all interested in covering bands that The Reticent is already compared to nor covering anything that is already in the 'progressive' sphere. It's far more interesting to step away from expectation and explore, in my opinion. I think a lot of people will be surprised by some of the tracks on the album and hopefully they won't be too awful to listen to."
"Artifice" will be recorded this spring with a late spring or early summer release. Hathcock also gave a lot of insight into the anxiously awaited fourth full-length follow-up to the well-received "Le Temps Detruit Tout." "In many ways this will be the angriest The Reticent has ever sounded and in some ways the most sorrowful. A better way to put it is that it will be the most honest and exposed I've ever been."
The album, titled "Chronology Of My Disgrace," is set to be a concept album in which every song revolves around a single narrative which is aimed to give the listener a ride along a very revealing and personal journey. Due to the amount of material to complete this vision, the release may very well end up as a double-length CD.
When asked about the album, Hathcock said, "It is the next step in the evolution of this band. That's not to say it will be great but it will be different. It will be much heavier than the last album while also being more honest and sorrowful. Elements of jazz and experimental music will be there right along with elements of death metal, prog rock, etc. So hopefully it will be if nothing else a dynamic listen. But don't listen to me, artists are terrible judges of their own work." Hathcock plans to head to the studio to begin work on "Chronology Of My Disgrace" this summer with a release next winter.
Earlier this year, Hathcock received fan submitted questions about his influences, recording process, among many other topics. His answers were posted via a series of YouTube videos, part one featured below.
Hathcock commented, "Some long-winded answers at way too late an hour from your least favorite mediocre musician. All the questions were collected via Facebook and are reproduced verbatim. If your question did not get answered, don't worry. Due to the amount, the interview was broken into a few parts. Thanks to everyone that helped in this."
SkullsNBones.com has posted an exclusive world premier of the song "Already Dead" taken from the upcoming release "Fate is Your Muse" from Indy-based heavy rockers Devil To Pay. Enjoy the tune at this location, or below in the player. "Fate is your Muse," exploring topics such as reincarnation, the end of days, and the thin veil between reality and fantasy, is set for an April 9th release on Ripple Music.
Enigmatic U.K. blackened death trio Abyssal will release the CD reissue of debut full-length "Denouement" on April 2nd via Poland's Hellthrasher Productions, with the vinyl edition coming in Autumn.
"Denouement” (limited to 1000 copies) can be pre-ordered at the label's webstore. Hellthrasher also comments:
"The album was primarily self-released by the band in January 2012 on hand-assembled CDs and digitally, getting great reception with its refreshing manifestation of dark, twisted death metal, reminiscent of Portal and Mitochondrion, yet unique in its own way. The entire material is available for streaming via Bandcamp." More...
Deserters’ music video for “The Plunge” has been premiered online, and can be viewed in the player below or over at Bloody-Disgusting.
Speaking on the lyrical content of the song, vocalist Matthew Roell stated, "We spend eight years at a desk, to spend four years at a desk and if we work hard enough and our parents saved enough, we can spend four more years at a desk. Once all of that is said and done, we compete with each other for the opportunity to spend the rest of our lives, sitting at a desk.” Adding, “I don't want any part it. I'd rather take the plunge."
“The Plunge” comes from Deserters’ album "The Slow Rhythms of a Dead-Beat," which is available in stores and online now from Mediaskare Records. More...
Legendary British band Satan has released a brand new track off its forthcoming album "Life Sentence." The song, "Siege Mentality," is now streaming below. "Life Sentence," Satan's first full-length since 1987's "Suspended Sentence," will be available in North America on May 21st via Listenable Records. The album will mark the 30th anniversary of the band's highly-acclaimed 1983 debut "Court In The Act." "Life Sentence" will also feature the same line-up that appeared on that now-classic piece of metal history.
The cover art for the album was drawn by famed artist Eliran Kantor (Sodom, Testament, Hatebreed) and depicts a similar graphic concept as Court In The Act. Mixed by Dario Mollo at Damage Inc. studio in Italy and tracked late last year at First Avenue in Newcastle, "Life Sentence" is a very strong uptempo heavy metal album that will undoubtedly become a metal classic.

In a little over a week, Bloodsoaked will invade European soil for the Rotting In Europe 2013 Tour that will see the brutalists joined with Bay Area melodic death sextet Short Fuse, Dallas-based blackened death act Psychiatric Regurgitation, Boston thrash trio Black Mass and Chicago death horde Hate Storm Annihilation.
To get the European fans ready for the devastation heading their way, Bloodsoaked has posted a brand new demo track on its bandcamp page. Reading, Pennsylvania's death metal quintet Rivers of Nihil recently entered Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg with Erik Rutan to record the band's Metal Blade Records debut, which is due out before the end of 2013.
Drummer Ron Nelson checked in after completing tracking the drums and here's what he had to say:
"Tracking went awesome; we were right on schedule with how we planned it out and everything went smoothly. Erik and I had very similar visions in the way we wanted the drums to sound and he delivered. Although this is our first full-length release, they're going to be the most natural drums Rivers has had to date and we couldn't be happier with how they sound."
Stay tuned as more studio info is released. Tour dates for the summer are in the works so stay tuned for dates and more studio updates. More...
Los Angeles thrashers Anger As Art performed at their record release party in Santa Ana on March 16th. The members of Atlanta-based grindcore trio Dead in the Dirt have completed the writing process for their pending debut LP, and are preparing to set up camp to harness their latest blast-laden auditory dissent in the coming days. The following press release was issued about the pending recording:
"Dead in the Dirt will travel seven hundred miles north, set to record with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos) at Bricktop Recording Studio in Chicago the second week of April, armed with a barrage of new songs which will be delivered later in the year as their first full-length release, The Blind Hole.
"Following their initial 2010-released Vold EP, DITD caught the attention of Southern Lord Recordings, who hooked up with the band immediately for the release of their Fear 7”, which bore some of the heaviest music of the year, taking morose lessons from His Hero Is Gone and Cursed to horrifically relentless levels of blasting intensity. The label will continue the tradition, and The Blind Hole will see release through Southern Lord later in the year.
"A band who continually takes their societal and politically-based contempt out on the road, Dead in the Dirt have taken part in multiple Southern Lord and The Power Of The Riff events and tours over the past two years, including both East Coast and West Coast US tours as direct support for SUNN O))) in 2012. With much more still in the works for the coming months, a live assault throughout the Midwest and parts of the Southeast US has already been confirmed for the majority of the month of May. The band will also take on Europe for a full month this October and November." More...

Cornell grad students Matt Bierbaum and Jesse Silverberg have created a mathematical model for a mosh pit; not just a single mosh pit, but presumably any mosh pit taking into account a number of variables such as speed of movement and denseness of crowd and more. Now if only some of these controls could be mapped to logical labels like a "band sucking" slider.
From the NPR article:
About five years ago Silverberg took his girlfriend to her first gig. "Usually I would jump in the mosh pit," he says. "But this time I wanted her to be safe and have a good time, so we stayed out on the side and watched things from there."
While he was watching, he realized that the motion of people in a mosh pit looks kind of like molecules moving in a gas.
"It was basically just this random mess of collisions, which is essentially how you want to think about the gas in the air that we breathe," he says.
Physicists have worked out the basic rules that describe this kind of motion, so Bierbaum and Silverberg decided to look for the rules of motion in moshing. They went to concerts and studied videos from YouTube. Silverberg emphasizes that no tax dollars went toward buying concert tickets — the study is a labor of love.
Using just a few variables, like how fast people moved and how dense the crowd was, Bierbaum and Silverberg created a mathematical model that they presented at this week's March meeting of the American Physical Society. Using a mixture of simulated moshers and standing fans, they could reproduce mosh pits, circle pits and other common collective motions that take place at metal concerts. You can try some simulations for yourself in their mosh pit simulator below.
The model has even been put into an embeddable script, which you can try out and play with below: More...
