We post metal news every day, throughout the day, covering thousands of metal bands including underground and unsigned bands. You are currently browsing the news archive, but you can also find news by band.
47 news articles posted on this day.
Every Monday we unearth three more underground metal bands that our readers may not have had the pleasure of hearing yet, and this week we’re looking another batch of acts that throw prog rock into the mix or otherwise break genre boundaries.
This is our third outing into the ever-changing waters of prog, and what’s interesting about this style is how many different sounds can be contained within the same overall genre title (even the term “prog” itself is somewhat contradictory – if a band falls into an easily identifiable genre label then is it really “progressive?”). For instance, compare Orphan Bloom’s over the top rock style from our last prog metal edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground with the mixture of soothing atmosphere and death metal mayhem found in Enochian Theory below. Both are “prog,” but both are vastly different in style and substance.
These three acts are a little less jazz and instrumental focused than the bands in our last prog lineup, and cover a wider range of ground, heading into power and symphonic territory as well.
U.S. act Ocean Architecture is a newer band on the scene, having just now finished and released online a first full-length album title “Animus.” Although the sound quality isn’t perfect (this is a debut from an unknown group after all), the album still has pretty much everything that a progressive metal fanatic craves: crazy electronic keyboard sounds, a strong prog rock feel, random gang shouts, and even some black/death metal bouts interspersed all throughout.
Topping it all off are some technical and showy bits, as well as interesting changes in tempo and vocal styles, such as the odd feeling of falling created during the “spiral downwards” section on the track “Plato’s Cave.” You can listen to the full “Animus” album through the Bandcamp player below.
Back to the lineup they performed with for the 1985 album "Animosity," Corrosion of Conformity has been tearing up the world and strengthening their place as one of the best loved hardcore fusion bands with the release of a new self-titled album. I got to talk to drummer Reed Mullin about coming back together with his longtime bandmates to release "Corrosion of Conformity," how the three musicians met, and what he would do (or not do) if the band takes a break again. French metal band Darktribe has signed with Massacre Records. The band was founded in 2004 and released its debut EP "Natural Defender" in 2009. The debut full length "Mysticeti Victoria" will be released August 24, 2012. The album was recorded at Artmusic Studio in Nice with Sebb Camhi and mixed and mastered at Finnvox Studios by Mikko Karmila (Nightwish/Masterplan) and Mika Jussila (Sonata Arctica/Amorphis). The album's lyrical content deals with the path of self-destruction to which the human civilization moves by ruining earth.
The band describes its sound as "powerful vocals, heavy guitars and progressive rhythms meet melodic and symphonic parts."
After being dormant for nearly ten years, Italian maniacs Antropofagus have awakened. They make their brutal return to the death metal scene with their new full length CD "Architecture Of Lust." The effort will be released on April 17th through Comatose Music, and a teaser trailer can be found here.
“This album is like a beast closed in a cage for so much time. Finally it can be unleashed with its majestic power. The skills of the most modern brutal metal meets perfectly classic death metal: it’s a perfect balance,” says Francesco “Meatgrinder,” Antropofagus’ guitar player.
Lyrics are inspired by the deranged works of Clive Barker and thrive with gore and sickness. This CD is the embodiment of evil and sure to be a top release in 2012. “This is upsetting and sick… a trip without return. We wanted to keep alive our style, but at the same time trying a way a little bit more ‘elegant’ compared to the past. Blood will flow...” adds singer Tya.
Mastermind Francesco “Meatgrinder” and frontman Tya are accompanied on this new Antropofagus journey by bass player Jacopo (Nerve) and Davide "Brutal Dave" Billia (Putridity & Septycal Gorge) on drums. “Francesco and I are lucky to play with these top players. Jacopo studied, arranged and recorded nine songs in just two weeks. He’s a war machine! Davide is fast and powerful,” enthuses Tya.
Musically the band's approach has evolved into a more technical style, yet sustains a classic death metal presence with frantic riffing and supreme drumming. “This album is so great also because of the talent of Jacopo and Davide, two great people and amazing musicians that complement the album and the line-up,” adds Francesco. Bullet Tooth is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Minneapolis Minnesota's, Throw The Fight. The label issued the following statement:
"For the past three decades, Minneapolis has had it's finger on the pulse of the musical world. There's something about the Northern Midwest crowds that demand passion and energy from their musical acts. Throw The Fight continues that tradition, bringing an authentic display of metal-edged, hard rock. It's the kind of energy one hears on the band's newest album, the John Feldmann (Atreyu, The Used) produced, 'What Doesn't Kill Us' (June 5, 2012)."
Months after initial talks with the band, Bullet Tooth president Josh Grabelle flew out to Minneapolis to see the band play in its element. "I watched Throw The Fight play at First Ave in front of 1000+ hungry music fans and they tore the roof off the place. They were exactly what I had hoped they would be and reminded me of a young Bullet For My Valentine. These guys are stars."
Guitarist Ryan Baustert commented, “We’re really excited to be working with Josh Grabelle and Bullet Tooth. Our new record has been a long time coming and it feels good to be partnering with a label that understands what we’re trying to accomplish. Josh has a great track record of breaking bands." More...

Solo metal band Autumns Eyes is gearing up to release its long awaited new album, "Please Deceive Me" (reviewed here) and Metalunderground.com has the full album stream album nearly a full week prior to release. You can hear the album in the player below. "Please Decieve Me" will finally be released on April 1, 2012, after delays stemming from Autumns Eyes mastermind Dan Mitchell undergoing hand surgery, contributing to and coordinating Metalunderground.com's Peter Steele tribute album, and the Fall snow storm of 2011 among other things.
Of the release, Dan Mitchell commented:
"I'm really excited about this new release as its become a chance to explore different production techniques which focus completely on the listeners' experience. There was a lot of care and thought put into dynamics, and volume control. In a time where so many metal albums are becoming squashed due to the ongoing loudness wars, finding an album with dynamics that won't hurt your ears when you turn it up is few and far between. When you listen to an overly compressed album at high volumes, your hearing gets shot much quicker. The loud parts are loud, the soft parts are loud, and the dynamics have been completely destroyed. That's not the case with 'Please Deceive Me.' The music breathes throughout each song, and in turn gives the songs energy in all the right spots. I encourage listeners to use their volume knobs here, and turn it way the fuck up!"
The complete track listing for "Please Deceive Me" is as follows:
2. Blood In the Woods
3. Anxiety Spiders
4. Please Deceive Me
5. So Close to Shadow
7. Cobwebs and Crosses
8. Red Wine and Resin
9. Haunting Your Daughter
10. The Wooded Road
You can currently pre-order "Please Deceive Me" and get instant downloads of the tracks "Red Wine and Resin" and "Haunting Your Daughter." Head over to www.autumnseyes.com for free wall papers and new merch in the theme of "Please Deceive Me" and songs from the album.

"Dead Flowers" puts Demon Hunter's mellower side on full display in the form of a darkly melancholic ballad. Listen to the song in the player below.
"'Dead Flowers' is a really special song to me and I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out," explains frontman Ryan Clark. "It was the last song I wrote for the record, and it really came to life in the studio. I think the lyrics on this song are my favorite on the album because there are so many different ways to interpret them. I think it's destined to become a classic DH ballad, up there with 'My Heartstrings Come Undone,' 'One Thousand Apologies' and 'Carry Me Down.' I think fans are really going to love this song."
