Pit Stories: Pissing Off The Lead Man

Hello again metal world - it's Tuesday and time for another heavy metal Pit Story!

This week's tale arrives courtesy of Canadian trio Absinthe From Society, with a story of on-stage tomfoolery that left the crowd confused and the front man plotting revenge.

Absinthe From Society's drummer Adam "The Caveman" Roberts had this to say:

I can remember one particular gig that I decided to mess around a little bit, have fun and make people laugh. It all started around 7:00 pm when we were loading in the music equipment for a full night of just Absinthe From Society (AFS) on stage at this venue. It was our first all night gig. Prior to this gig I hadn't written any of the songs or played any other instruments besides drums. Wow, was Ian (Saint Absinthe) Harper in for a surprise.

I immediately told the door lady, after being stamped on the back of my hand for the night, that I had written all the songs for AFS and that the band was mine. She laughed and smiled saying that she was interested in seeing us because she had heard good things about the band.

Two days before the gig we found out that we needed to supply ALL of our own sound gear as well as a sound man. Luckily I owned all my own sound gear and just by a hint of luck was able to find a sound man for the night (off to a good start). We setup our gear, did sound check and were all ready to go around 9:30.

Little did we know at the time what was to come. We had two newly strung guitars but we didn't have extra strings. Ian blew a string after the first song (off to a better start). Okay, we got this. Halfway through the first set Lexi Graham and I switched our instruments so
that she was playing drums and I was playing bass guitar. Ian had no idea we where practicing this on the side and had planned on doing this the whole time. Ohhh the freedom! To be in front! I thought, how could I piss off the lead man in a way that he can't get back at me?

The first thing I did as I started the song was to take the bass, and hit the mic stand so then the mic hit Ian on his lips. I laughed and proceeded to scurry into the crowd because I was wireless and I knew Ian wasn't. Lexi saw what had happened the whole time and was laughing her ass off. We finished the remaining sets with one guitar, there was no feedback because the sound man was awesome and at the end of our last set, I had the whole bar convinced that it was my band and got crazy recognition for playing bass guitar on stage. What a ride!

Oh and the first gig we did as a band, the venue cut us one song short at the end of our forty-five minute set because....WE WERE TOO METAL... That's another story...

Comprised of founder Ian "Saint Absinthe" Harper and Adam "The Caveman" Roberts (drums & percussion), along with Lexi "Shitkicker 9000" Graham (bass & vocals), the trio released latest EP "The Angels Ignored Us" last month. Listen in below or pick up your copy at Bandcamp here. More...

Enslaved Announces "Roadburn Live" Release

"Roadburn Live" is Enslaved's first official live album, a split release between Roadburn Records and By Norse Music. The album was recorded during a headlining show at the renowned Roadburn Festival 2015, an edition curated by Enslaved's own guitar player Ivar Bjørnson.

Walter Hoeijmakers, Roadburn's Artistic Director, comments on the release: "It's no secret that there's a strong friendship between Roadburn and Enslaved. One of the most hard-hitting and progressive bands to come out of Norway, Enslaved has played a significant part in the festival's history - both musically and antically.

"Not only has Enslaved been our artist in residence, bringing side-projects such as The Armageddon Concerto (the Enslaved/Shining collaboration), Dream Of An Opium Eater, and Trinacria to Roadburn, Ivar Bjørnson has also been our 2015 co-curator, along with Wardruna's Einar Kvitrafn Selvik, resulting in Skuggsjá's first ever performance outside of Norway.

"Enslaved's 2015 performances were the pinnacle of this enduring and artistic friendship, and showcased the massive influence the band has had on both Roadburn and the (underground) metal scene for the past two decades. To have these shows captured on vinyl is a dream come true for me, and I truly hope it's the same for anyone who was in attendance, or those who want to indulge themselves in the Northern magic of Enslaved" More...

Jeff Plate Splits With Metal Church

Jeff Plate, longtime drummer for Metal Church, announced his departure from the band citing time and time management issues. The band announced that it is withdrawing from the AlterBridge/In Flames tour scheduled for this May.

In a post on Facebook, Plate stated: "Hello everyone. It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my departure from Metal Church. I came to this conclusion 2 weeks ago, and agreed to hold off on the announcement until Metal Church had made some decisions on what they were going to do.

"This is obviously not an easy decision. After many conversations with myself, my wife, my family, my management and Kurdt Vanderoof and Mike Howe, I know I am doing the right thing for my future.

"I know there will be questions and speculation. The bottom line is time, my time, and how best I manage it. I had to come to terms with the fact that time is just blowing by at the speed of light and there is no time for me to second guess or regret anything I'm doing. At this point in my life I need to be in more control of my time and career. I have a number of things I’d like to do and try, and to do these I have to give up something I truly love and am very proud of.

"I cannot thank Kurdt Vanderhoof enough for inviting me into Metal Church. For the past 12 years I have had the honor and privilege of playing some of the best, truly iconic Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal songs ever written. I have recorded 4 records with the band. The latest, 'XI', is not only one of my favorite Metal Church records, but I feel it is the one of the best, if not the best records I have recorded throughout my career.

"Also, I cannot thank the Metal Church fan base enough for the tremendous support. I have met thousands of you over the years and you, fans old and new, are simply the best. You have kept this band alive for the past 33 years, and I am sure there is more great music to come.

"Metal Church is in a good place, and there are a number of shows and good things coming up this year. This decision is made now to not only let me prepare for the year to come, but also to let Metal Church do the same. Kurdt Vanderhoof(g), Mike Howe(v), Steve Unger(b), Rick VanZandt(g), Tim Harding(sound and production), and Joe Obrien(President @ Rat Pak Records) have been a tremendous team, and they are also very good friends of mine. I wish them nothing but the best.

"I hope to see you all again somewhere down the road. I will keep you posted on my activities. Trust me, I will not sit still for very long. Thank you, take care." More...

Novembers Doom Posts "Zephyr" Video

Ready for new Novembers Doom? The "Hamartia" album follows 2014 full-length release "Bled White" (reviewed here) and will see official release on April 14th, 2017. Pre-orders are online now at this location.

As we approach that release date, today a music video for album track "Zephyr" comes online and can be seen below.

Vocalist Paul Kuhr commented to TeamRock.com about the track:

"The entire album of Hamartia is based on relationships, and I took a different approach for some of it’s lyrical content. I wrote certain songs through the eyes of other people, who are very close to me in my life, keeping it all very personal. 'Zephyr' is one song written though the eyes of my daughter, and after watching her struggle with a demon she’s had for years, it was a way for me to put into words what I have witnessed all along. It’s about standing up, calling it out for what it is, and doing what needs to be done to move forward with her life." More...

Lacerta Announces New Album

Birthed in 2005, prior to the more-recent explosion of tech death, Lacerta paved the way for later-era tech death bands such as Beyond Creation and Archspire, finally releasing a debut effort entitled "Mind Processor" in 2010.

The album, produced by Psycroptic guitarist Joe Haley, combined brutality and brains, with over-arching sci fi themes as the perfect narrative to the clinical-yet-complex compositions.

In the time it would take an astronaut to circle the earth 38,000 times, Lacerta wrote and recorded that debut effort, toured with the likes of Psycroptic and Dreadnaught, and wrote and recorded a brand new sophomore effort.

This latest self-titled album contains eight tracks of death metal architecture that will certainly go on to inform a whole new journey of tech death into the furthest reaches of space. "Lacerta" will drop April 14th via CDN Records and features the following track listing:

2. Grotesque Design
3. Hell To Pay

The Lurking Fear Signs To Century Media Records

Something is lurking in the shadows...

The newly launched Swedish death metal group The Lurking Fear has signed a worldwide deal with Century Media Records and is currently working on a debut album, expected to be released later this year.

Composed of members/ex-members of illustrious and influential acts like At The Gates, The Haunted, Skitsystem, Disfear or God Macabre, The Lurking Fear isn't just another retro all-star project, but a real band of five death metal lifers, who organically got together in order to celebrate the metal breed closest to their roots as well as their hearts.

The Lurking Fear checked in with the following comment: "We are a Death Metal band. Not your average new wave of old school Death Metal band. We play Death Metal from the heart with pure emotional impact and a focused artistic vision. This is the music we live and breathe. Always have, always will.

"We have all played in various other bands for over 25 years and we just want to spew out the music that we want to hear. When we get together this is what comes out of naturally, because we share the exact same reference points. We love "Seven Churches" and "Mental Funeral" for the exact same reasons.

"We want our death metal ugly, twisted and possessed. We miss the urgency, intensity and 'realness' in a lot of the modern Death Metal, therefore it is natural for us to stray away from the streamlined sounds of today, but rather focus on bringing sheer, natural weirdness and horror back to the table..." Crohm Explores The Depths Of "Humanity"

Italy's Crohm released the new album "Humanity" today (March 21st) via Sliptrick Records.

The powerful flow of heavy metal that exudes from the tracks of "Humanity," the new album from Crohm, is a mixture of styles that interweaves music with the lyrics, mixing power and melody in order to create an aggressive base from which the voice of Sergio Fiorani can continuously launch messages that describe humanity. Humanity was in fact conceived as a journey into the human Psyche with the intention of exploring it, revealing it, discovering it and looking at it without fear and without mercy. “We want to look inside the human soul with a piercing and ruthless gaze” says Claudio Zac Zanchetta, Crohm’s lead guitar, “from the darkest and mysterious depths up to the highest and brightest peaks, bringing to the surface the powerful energies that are trapped in the inner worlds”

The journey of Humanity starts deep down, in the depths where the energy lives that is described in the song "Alien" and it continues slowly into that area called "The Dark Side" until it finally receives a call, as Sergio sings in "The Call," which is the powerful drive of heavy metal that pushes our consciousness towards an awakening because the keys to success or to failure are in the hands of humanity. The only disruptive energy that can break the chains of despair is an internal fire, enclosed in the motto KYDAH!, and this energy can be heard in "The Noise of Silence." It also manifests itself in the battlefield of the track "Fields Painted Red" and it pushes the individual to fight with all his strength in
"Run For Your Life (The Escape)" for both an individual and a common redemption.

“KYDAH! Keep your Dragon Alive is our motto,” says Riccardo Taraglio, the bass player of the band, “it’s our cry to the world, our deepest expression, meant to shake consciences and awaken the dragon that is inside each one of us”.

The track listing for "Humanity" is as follows:

1. Alien
2. The Call
3. The Dark Side
4. Nothing Else
5. Insatiable
6. Lost Soul
7. Fields Painted Red
8. The Noise Of Silence
9. Run For Your life (The Escape)
