Fenriz and Nocturno Culto (AKA Ted) may be iconic superstars in the eyes of many fans of Norwegian metal, but they also epitomize the underground and reflect the lives of many of the scene's enthusiasts (they both still work day jobs and never tour).
The duo, also recently covered in our Sunday Old School column, now has a new full-length album out and ready to be devoured by the hungry metal masses, fittingly titled "The Underground Resistance."
The Darkthrone machine defies expectations pretty much whenever possible and doesn't concern itself much with sticking to a genre label, traveling from black metal to punk and even other styles. Following 2010's "Circle the Wagons" release, "The Underground Resistance" (reviewed here) offers everything from power metal to '80s era Celtic Frost influences.
Take a trek into the mind of an unassuming metal titan and find out everything there is to know about this latest genre defying opus - from inception to recording to art - in our interview with Fenriz below. More...

Non Opus Dei has checked in with the following announcement about working on an upcoming new release:
"The band is working on the songs for a new album. We have just recorded three new tracks. We decided to go for an old school style live recording in the studio (with all the musicians and their amps in the same room), with no overdubs, and no post-production tweaking. The result is amazing and we are convinced that this is the right sound for our full album.
"The three abovementioned tracks recorded live in Bat Studio in Olsztyn will probably be published as a split in September 2013 - as the herald of our new album. We have also started playing live again. Below are some videos from our gigs." More...

Good to Die Records is thrilled beyond all measure to announce the release of "Hold Me...But Not So Tight," the new album by power (bottom?) trio Gaytheist.
Set for a worldwide release on May 21st - on vinyl, of course - the new full-length finds the three-piece staying the course with an abundance of punchy riffage, huge drums, and Jason Rivera's arch, limp-wristed take on life and love. The label comments:
"Gaytheist recorded 'Hold Me...' in a whirlwind session earlier this year at Interlace Audio with Stealth Beats producer Stephan Hawkes. Don't let the brevity of the efforts give the impression that the album will sound rushed and half-assed. Rather, it's a testament to the tight musicianship between front man and guitarist Jason Rivera and his crack rhythm section Nickolis Parks (drums) and Tim Hoff (bass). Gaytheist is as lean and mean as ever on these 12 songs."
The track listing is as follows: More...

As "Reflection Of The Negative," the split album between Richmond, Virginia outfits Cough and Windhand draws near, today another massive slab of doom metal from the record has been made public.
Pitchfork today unleashes the album-opening “Athame," and while it is the sole track from Coughto be found on the split album, the beast bears over eighteen-and-a-half-minutes of disastrous riffage. Check out the song at this location.
"Reflection Of The Negative" acts as a precursor for the upcoming full-lengths from both Cough and Windhand, both slated for release via Relapse later this year. The split will see release on April 16th in North America, preceded by international street dates of April 12th (Germany/Benelux) and April 15th (UK/World). More...

It will be the spearhead for Ecnephias." More...
The Afterimage has launched a crowd funding campaign to help offset the costs of recording and a recent vehicle breakdown that has prevented the band from continuing to tour. Details on the campaign are available here. The group comments:
"Just a week ago (During our Cross Canada tour) we met a very unfortunate fate. Our van was written off and scrapped, our trailer impounded.
"We even had to call 911 to transport us to the nearest town (Broadview, SK) because we had absolutely no money for a cab. We spent countless hours in freezing temperatures waiting for help. With all the fees and costs involved, any funds raised previously during the tour quickly dissipated. All of us put absolutely everything we have into this project. We all work full time to fund this band.
"Regrettably, that just isn't enough at this point and we could really use YOUR assistance. Please consider donating to our indiegogo campaign. We do not want to have to bring this project to a halt because of these events. Your support means everything to us... we must move forward together. There's tons of sweet perks for those who donate as well!" More...
New York hardcore outfit On The Offense has posted two new tracks, "We're All Good" and "Four Hundred List," for streaming via the band's ReverbNation page. You can also check out the tracks below. Both songs come from the band's upcoming debut album, "Frontline," due out April 9th on Dead City Records.
Said vocalist Sean Finley, "These are two songs that go over huge when we play them live, and the fans really dig 'em. So it's cool to actually get them recorded for everyone to hear. I think they're a good intro to what we've got on the album, and what we are all about...no flash, no technical wizardry, no crazy over produced bullshit or over complication... just straight up NYHC."
The "Frontline" album will be available for download through most digital outlets on April 9th, with a limited number of physical CDs available via the Dead City web-store.
Added Finley, "I have been in this since 1986, and I have been in a lot of hardcore bands. It took this long to click with the right guys to get it done. Collectively this record spans 20-plus years of growing up in NYHC without rehashing the same old same old, or reducing NYHC to a novelty. There ain't no games or motives or disguises about it. Listen to the record, and that's what and who we are...NYHC for life." More...
Pith will be following up 2012's "Fore" EP (released through Diminished Fifth Records) with an 11-and-a-half minute long song called "Baptisms Along The Acheron." The track will drop in digital only format via D5 Digital on April 16th, 2013. A teaser video can be found below.
The following press release was also issued about the band: "As drummers Myles Deck and Chris Gatza have come and gone since the first EP, this time Pith have the temporary talents of Graham Ferguson (Napalm Raid, Hellacaust, Terratomb) on drums and backing vocals.
"The recording was engineered by Robert Nickerson (Black Moor) and Nick Jones (ex-Black Moor, ex-We're Doomed!). Nick and Pith member Jason Vautour mixed. Artwork and lyrics once again are done by vocalist Brett Campaigne (Cottus, River Nihil, North End Metal All-Stars, Pounding Sand) and on bass is of course Troy Kirker (Hellacaust, Spew, Raw Violence)."

Dutch progressive metallers Textures are excited to announce that guitarist Joe Tal will replace Jochem Jacobs, who left the band earlier this year. A video announcement about the lineup change can be found below.
Joe had to say this about joining Textures: "I am really super excited about this, it was a lot of fun doing the audition and jamming with the guys. It feels great to say I'm a part of the group now and I can't wait to actually get started."
The band also issued the following statement: "It was a big setback for us to see Jochem leave Textures. Jochem was a driving force behind the band from the beginning and helped the band get to where we are right now. But Joe gives us more than enough reason to continue our journey with loads of new ideas and riffs. His diversity, personality, musical taste, the background of the band and of course his great technique were the reasons why we chose Joe to become our new guitarist. This makes us want to play shows and write new music even more than we already did!!"
Joe will make his live debut on a select number of shows this summer. Those new dates are as follows:
31-05: BUMA ROCKS, Doornroosje: Nijmegen, The Netherlands
31-08: Rockstadt Extreme Fest Open Air, Risnov, Brasov, Romania More...

Some of his most popular tracks have been used in the advertising campaigns of The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, X-Men: First Class, and How To Train Your Dragon among many others. If you are into soundtrack and trailer music, we highly recommend you to check out his album Elysium! More...
English progressive-metallers Aeon Zen released third opus "Enigma" to the world this past January on Nightmare Records / Sony / RED. Today Aeon Zen is pleased to present the fifth and final video in the band's "Top 5 Riffs" series. This installment focuses on keyboard parts and can be viewed below.
Keyboardist Shaz described his video: "An added dimension resonating with soul is added to the Soundscape of Enigma in the form of its keyboards. Through strings and choirs alone, at times the listener is able to witness the glory of Heaven unfolding in the forefront of his mind, while at other times given a front seat to the dark, despairing depths of man's inner turmoil. The atmospheric pads provide a journey through a cosmic universe, humbling one at the sheer glory of all that remains unknown and unseen." More...
The injustices of humanity and the demise of mankind will be exploited once again by the entity known as Integrity this Spring as the outfit prepares to assault the planet with a new LP - to be released through a joint collaboration with A389 Recordings and Magic Bullet Records. The following press release was issued about the band's upcoming album:
"Legions of converted souls worldwide have hailed the name Integrity for two and a half decades. Formed in 1988, the band surged out of the Cleveland underground with a seething style of metal hellbent on murder, revenge, the occult and beyond, and has continually drawn more flies into the flames every step of the way. As one of the more prolific acts of the blood-boiling mid-late ‘90s metallic hardcore scene, and having toured most inhabited realms of the planet, Integrity has not only become a household name over the years, but its devotees have helped maintain the name as one of the most notorious and revered.
"Amidst countless eras and lineup shifts, founding member Dwid Hellion continues to carry the band forward, forming his own Holy Terror Empire, and becoming as iconic within the extreme music underworld as David Koresh, Jim Jones and Pol Pot are to population control.
"Hellion has stripped the birthing process of Integriy’s output to even more cult depths, and for the past five years and all micro releases within, has musically collaborated with multi-instrumentalist Robert Orr alone. Taking past trades forward and culminating those staples with newer practices, Hellion and Orr’s latest effigy has been carved, and on June 11th -- the vinyl pressing A389 and the CD via Magic Bullet -- 'Suicide Black Snake' will deliver the end time yearnings of the longtime Integrity message into the general public like never before." In anticipation of upcoming new full-length, "Pelagial," today The Ocean posts the second in a series of studio video diaries. Check it out below. Metal Blade Records also comments on the album:
"Possibly their deepest and most profoundly sophisticated composition to date, Pelagial is a progressive musical journey written, recorded and to-be-performed-live as one, single, 53-minute piece of music. Mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Witchcraft) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden, the offering will be released as a double CD, which includes both vocal and instrumental versions of the album, on April 26th/29th (Europe) and April 30th (North America/world) through Metal Blade Records.
"The concept of the album is made evident in its title. Listeners will be further submersed as they journey with the band, beginning at the surface of the ocean and plunging through all five pelagic depth zones: epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic. As one continuous piece of music, Pelagial's tracks, or episodes, are connected by interludes of underwater sounds and samples taken from old submarine movies, which give the album a claustrophobic 'Das Boot'-kind of atmosphere."
"There are track marks, and there are actual songs built into this larger structure, but the whole album is a journey rather than a number of loose tracks… some riffs appear in the first two minutes of the album and then reappear thirty minutes later," details guitarist Robin Staps. It's an experience that will reward repeated listens. More...

Discussing the track, Grigg says, “‘Exhausted’ is one of the most dynamic and diverse tracks on the album. It has the fastest, most aggressive moments of the album but also some of its most subtle. The lyrics are a straightforward statement about giving up, moving on, while the music -- the first written collaboratively as a band -- moves quickly and dramatically, representing life's abrupt twists.”

It's latest release "Beg Upon the Light" was issued through Occulture Records last October, but will see a worldwide reissue through Napalm this summer. The band is writing a new album for release in 2014.
Vocalist/guitarist Gregg Higgins commented: "We are pleased to announce that we've signed with Napalm Records. They are going to release 'Beg Upon the Light' this summer and another new full length we are working on in 2014. All of this comes to a surprise, because this project was meant to be something that no one would ever hear about. So as time went on and we started to be successful, we always agreed to do everything our selves. To keep it our way. The only way we were ever going to work with anyone was if we knew they were dedicated to worship the past as we were. Now that we are here with Napalm, we will continue to create this hidden message. But with their help they will be revealing this to the masses and we are ok with that now. Because of the records we first created only for ourselves will be released with everything we dreamed from the beginning. Destiny has come for us to work with Napalm Records. Our Hearts are in Texas but our souls comes from Europe. Now having a family in Europe that takes car e of the land where we arised, our spirits fly, where we are able to focus on the beautiful."
