On Saturday, my band was playing a show at the “big” venue for local underground bands in Taipei, Taiwan. Playing a show there means your band has “made it,” at least in a purely local sense. It has the best sound system in town, professional lighting, a small but serviceable backstage area—everything you need and a few things you don’t, including a disco ball. It’s where the “big” international extreme bands play—Exodus, Ensiferum, Misery Index, Into Eternity, Destruction, and many more have played there. It has a much maligned crowd barrier in front of an elevated stage, capacity for about 700 people—those things that make a band that might never have played outside their hometown think they can take things to the next level. It also has a common policy that most bands at the next level encounter on a semi-nightly basis: This venue takes a percentage of the bands’ merchandise sales. More...

The release of Borknagar's new album, "Urd" (reviewed here), is only a few days away, and there has already been a massive positive media reaction towards the record.
Amongst others, Germany's Metal Hammer Magazine as well as Norway's Scream Magazine have voted Urd as "Album of the Month" in their current issues. Borkangar mastermind Oystein G. Brun has checked-in to comment about the amazing advance reactions, as well as the band status:
"Hey folks! Just wanted to give you all a brief status report from the BORK headquarters...
"First off I would like to express our gratitude for all the amazing feedback we have got for the upcoming album. As earlier stated we're all very satisfied and proud of the new album, but the fact that this album would unleash such a massive and positive feedback came a bit as a surprise for all of us. 'Urd' recently won the 'album of the month' in Metal Hammer Germany, something we really didn't really expect being the 'unconventional' band we are. Also we won the 'album of the month' in Scream Magazine in Norway and it feels good to get that kind of recognition in our own territory. We have done numerous interviews the past weeks and what a joyful ride it is, the feedbacks are generally amazing and we can't do anything but smile. More...

Destructure Records has issued the following announcement about releasing a split album from Year of No Light and ThisQuietArmy:
"After the release of Ausserwelt, the awesome record and critically acclaimed second album by Year of No Light, we started talking last year with our old friends from Bordeaux about releasing something new from them. We talked about several projects of split and collaborations and eventually all agreed on the idea of sharing a new record with ThisQuietArmy from Montreal, Canada.
"This record pushes the idea of sharing a record to the extreme. Both sides start with a new song from each band, long songs (approx 12 min) which let both bands enough time to develop their own ambiance full of intensity and melodic loops. These new songs are followed by collaborative drones which prove that these two bands were made to work together and share a record.
"The atmosphere is dark but always full of melodies and progressions. The record deserves several playings for the listener to really hear all nuances and details. ThisQuietArmy will be on tour in Europe in April with AUN.
"Year of No Light will do a very few live appearances in the coming months since they started working on a new album after their Russian trip. Artwork has been done by the dedicated Destructure team. This collaborative effort will see the light of day in three versions : transparent clear vinyl, white and black. The release is now on preorder here." More...

Midwest black metal behemoths Stonehaven are set to unearth their second full-length offering through Horror Pain Gore Death Productions on April 20th, 2012. Entitled "Concerning Old-Strife And Man-Banes," the album was recorded and mixed at Massive Sound Studios in Kansas City by Corey White and mastered by Mike Nolte.
The cover art — a scene meant as a direct correlation to the mood of the record — was crafted by the band’s own Caleb May and depicts late 10th century King Olaf Trygvason of Norway and his men at the Godey Isles, torturing Raud the Strong. The band commented, "Raud was a priest of the local Scandinavian pagan religion, and had refused to convert to Christianity at the point of King Olaf’s sword. Seizing him from his bed at night, they dragged him outside, where Raud refused conversion once more. The king decided he should die the worst of ways publicly to set an example. Thus, Raud was held down and after many attempts — including the use of a drinking horn and hot poker — he was forced to swallow a snake. The title in turn is meant to resemble the tongue-in-cheek chapter titles of many Icelandic Sagas. Two kennings are used, old-strife (representing historical woes) and man-banes (swords). Kennings are a type of old Scandinavian figure of speech found in Sagas and other writing."
“We pride ourselves on our theme and style,” addded the band in a collective statement. “Our album is the end product of years of hard work. It captures the horrors of old world Europe: atrocity, murder, and Norse Heathenism. From aggressive black metal riffs to magnificent Viking melodies, Concerning Old-Strife And Man-Banes encapsulates a journey into the terrifying past of our ancestors.”

New Zealand's Human has checked in with the following update about recruiting a new drummer and working on a new album:
"We have secured a new drummer in the form of Daniel Pawsey, a Christchurch local, and we couldn't be more happy with the way it's been working out. We plan to do our first show with him on May 12th at 'Capital Punishment 3' in Wellington! After that we have our 20th anniversary show happening in our hometown, at our favourite venue; The Dux Live!
"Human had started work on a new studio album with our previous drummer late last year but that all fell through pretty quickly, which was unfortunate for all involved. However, we still have all of the songs we need and we are starting to record again with Daniel on the skins this time. And it'll be the best thing we've ever done. We hope xD Our good friend Nick 'Captain Catsquid' Coulter will be manning the controls for the production of the album!
"Brief enough? Don't forget we still exist on these websites so do check them out and leave your comments - we read them all. Except the shit ones... they get deleted. Metal on!"
Aborym has issued the following announcement about seeking fan photos and audio samples for an upcoming 20th anniversary release:
"Hey fuckers! As we believe you know, this is a very important year for us: it's the anniversary of the first 20 years of Aborym. We would like to thank you all for following us, for supporting us, quite often to stand us, for buying or downloading our albums, for wearing our T-shirts, for having read, understood and interiorized our lyrics and, for all the time, you dedicated to us when you were writing us letters or e-mails to which we couldn't answer, or, simply, for having criticized us.
"And we want to thank you, especially, if some of you, through Aborym, have become open-minded, rebelled against the rules, the business and the system (musical and not musical one) and perhaps managed to make music in a free, instinctive and passionate way.
"We would like you all to be part of our history and the history of extreme music. We want you all in our next album, planned to be released through Agonia Records. We intend to realize a song about 5 minutes' long in which we want to insert anything you would like to send us: guitar or bass riff, samples, sentences, keyboards, groove, loops or short lyrics.
"Furthermore, we would like to realize a huge Aborym Fan Wall Poster, a enormous mosaic with all of your pictures (above), which will be sent for free at the moment it will be completed.
"This is your opportunity to be part of the history of Aborym. This is our chance to thank you all. We love ya all.

British gothic metal legends Paradise Lost have posted their new music video online for the song, "Honesty In Death." You can check it out below. The song comes from the bands latest studio album, "Tragic Idol," which will be released in Europe on April 23rd through Century Media Records, with a North American release of April 24th to follow.
Speaking about the video, guitarist Greg Mackintosh stated: "We are very excited about the premiere of our Honesty in Death video. In my opinion it is the best video we have ever done. Matt Green, who I had previously worked with on the Vallenfyre ‘Cathedrals of Dread’ video, directed it. He did such a great job with Vallenfyre that we knew he would be able to do something really special for Paradise Lost. The result is a very powerful, but very grim short film with brief cameos by the band, that is sure to resonate with people who see it." More...
