DevilDriver is on the cusp of achieving legendary status. MIxing a fusion of blackened riffs, doom guitar lines, blast beat drums, shrieking vocals, this band has gotten slots on countless giant tours in the States, Europe and beyond. They have started pits the size of football fields and continue to release album after album to there growing fan base. I talked to vocalist Dez Fafara about this new era of the band, preachers talking through amps, and how much he loves his job. More...

New Jersey’s Beyond Dishonor has been making waves in the Tri-state area since the release of last year’s “Travesty.” Their melodic death metal/deathcore sound, along with use of movie samples, made for a debut that had a load of potential behind it. The band is looking to make a bigger name for themselves with their second album, which they are presently in the early stages of writing. I had a chance to speak to vocalist Reese Dunlap and drummer Mike Lock about being an unsigned band, learning the finer points of the music business, and the ambitions they have for their sophomore release. The best acts that metal has to offer aren’t always highly visible or inhabiting the mainstream, which is why every week with Unearthing the Metal Underground we bring to light several groups that deserve to be heard.
Black metal history month may already be over, but screeches from hell, head pummeling blast beats, and tremolo picking are always a good time year-round, and the genre is ripe with a multitude of high quality acts to discover. The term “black metal” covers a wide range of ground, from symphonic acts to abrasive and misanthropic bands and even on to more styles. This week we’re unearthing three bands from very different locations that each put their own spin on black metal and make the genre their own.
Gorthaur’s Wrath is an absolutely no-holds barred black metal act hailing from Croatia that’s as dark and evil as they come, but still devastatingly heavy. The band is a bit like a Behemoth that went a more black metal route instead heading into death metal, and the group is currently in the process of working on the follow-up to the 2011 album “Ritual IV.”
The new album is shaping up for some higher profile sonic destruction, as the band managed to recruit Triptykon's Norman Lonhard for the recording sessions, but due to scheduling conflicts he has now dropped out and is being replaced by German drummer Christian Bass. While awaiting what Gorthaur’s Wrath has in store, you can check out two songs from “Ritual IV” below or find more via the band’s Facebook profile.

Motorbreath Entertainment's SXSW Showcase contained a tremendous bill of new school thrash and heavy metal artists such as Bonded By Blood, Havok, Speedwolf, Exmortus, Witchaven and Spellcaster. The stellar lineup was the only old school-metal oriented event at SXSW, which was cause for Metal Underground to sponsor the event. Unfortunately, the March 16th show at Betsy's came to a abrupt and disappointing end. After the first three bands performed, Motorbreath founder, Tristan Spears announced that if more people didn't drink more alcohol, the show would be canceled. After much deliberation, the show was indeed canceled.
Spears provided Metal Underground with the following statement: More...
The Skull, the new band formed by two original members of Chicago doom legends Trouble— vocalist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff "Oly" Olson — alongside the band's longtime bassist, Ron Holzner, has now recruited guitarists Lothar Keller and Michael Carpenter of the Chicago, Illinois-based progressive power metal band Sacred Dawn.
Glen Drover (MEGADETH, TESTAMENT, KING DIAMOND) will not join the band as the guest touring guitarist due to scheduling conflicts. Commented Wagner, Olson, and Holzner in a statement:
"We welcome the twin guitar attack of Lothar Keller and Michael Carpenter from SACRED DAWN. Both guitarists have been playing together for many years and that's a big plus. We are excited to begin rehearsing for our upcoming shows!"

Unifying the core trio of Herr General Cerastes, Svartravn and Mean Malmberg, Mysticum will commence work on the new album shortly.

Added the band, “Mysticum is back! A few months ago we decided to gather forces again, and finally start the making of the cursed album, Planet Satan. After considering several offers and going through negotiations, we decided to sign with Peaceville Records in order to have a proper record label to back us up. Peaceville will handle our complete discography and also make our old material available. So along with Planet Satan, you can expect re-releases of In the Streams of Inferno and Lost Masters of the Universe. Stay tuned for more folks!” More...

Hacktivist also issued the following band biography:
"To progress, risk comes before reward, and convention must give way to invention.
In a scene saturated by sound-alike bands, the time has come to evolve or be left behind. Featuring ex-members of Heart of a Coward and Margot Kidder, hard-hitting, raw energy is assured. However, Hacktivist is no mere re-tread of what has come before.
"Hardwiring huge, devastating grooves with intelligent and insightful rhyme, Hacktivist are not afraid to split opinion. This is a sound to unite - a new way for a new age. There's safety in numbers, but Hacktivist are carving a path of their own."

"He is also involved in writing the drum part and so being part of the whole record. This is a top addition to the band’s ranks and another great step for Gorthaur’s Wrath to release a top new album later this year.
"Christian Bass will also exclusively appear live with Gorthaur’s Wrath at the Metalfest in Zadar/Croatia where the band will present new songs and the new line up on stage for the first time.

All drums were recorded in one take, no time correction or other modern trickery has been used, likewise for the guitars and bass were we used real tube amps pushed to their limits and a simple microphone set-up. What you hear is what we played, period! More...
