Ars Technica reports: Major musicians are exploring the market potential for directly interacting with their fans and releasing music independently. Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead both made headlines recently for experimenting with Internet-based releases, but NIN frontman Trent Reznor has just called Radiohead's effort "insincere."
"I think the way [Radiohead] parlayed it into a marketing gimmick has certainly been shrewd," Reznor said when speaking to Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Michael Atkin. "But if you look at what they did, though, it was very much a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale."
Reznor is referring to Radiohead's release of "In Rainbows" as lossy 160kbps (max) MP3 downloads, which many would argue are sub-par when compared to DRM-free offerings from Amazon and iTunes Store (both of which offer 256kbps DRM-free music). Furthermore, Radiohead's album is also no longer offered as a digital download, as the band openly stated that they were still going to rely on traditional labels and distribution channels for the rest of In Rainbows' sales.
"There's nothing wrong with that," Reznor continued, "but I don't see that as a big revolution [that] they're kinda getting credit for." In addition to the quality of Radiohead's MP3s, NIN's frontman also took issue with the band's omission of artwork and altogether not taking care of the fans. "To me that feels insincere. It relies upon the fact that it was quote-unquote 'first,' and it takes the headlines with it."
As previously reported, Nine Inch Nails 36-track instrumental album "Ghosts I-IV" had a total of 781,917 transactions in its first week of release online, which includes free and paid downloads as well as orders for the physical copy, resulting in $1,619,420 USD. The 2,500 copies of the ultra deluxe edition of the album, which sold for $300, sold out in three days.

Sinister and Gorgiastic Records have announce the upcoming release of SINISTER's "The Blood Past" CD featuring a complete collection of all the early, long-time out-of-print band material released during the 1990-1992 period.
This release will include their 2 EP's from 1990, the 1990 and 1991 demos, the split EP with MONASTERY from 1991 plus special bonus tracks. The release will be packed with a comprehensive booklet including all the ep's and demo covers, tons of pics, liner notes, recordings info and more!. Expect a masterful cover artwork by none other than cult underground artist Chris Moyen (INCANTATION, BLASPHEMY, VITAL REMAINS, MORTICIAN, SARCOFAGO, etc) that is sure to capture the true essence of the early band stages and then translate into artwork.
As previously reported, Dutch death metallers SINISTER will release their new album, "The Silent Howling", on September 26 via Massacre Records. The album will be recorded in May at Soundlodge Studio in Germany.
Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza wrecked their van last week while touring in Texas. The group remains on tour but is currently seeking monetary donations. The following statement has been issued:
"After we played Lewisville, TX Thursday night we were involved in an accident with a minivan and it left us without a tour van. We just got the van for this tour and we are still making payments. We left the van in a graveyard in Lewisville and a great friend 'Lina Dykes' from Plano, TX was so kind to tag along with us and let us tour in her van. So the wreck has not stopped us deilvering the charttopping hits. Hahaha. Any donations are much, much appreciated. Please donate through Paypal using firstname.lastname@example.org."
The soon-to-be Leeds, UK based 4-piece released their well-received debut single "A Moment of Clarity" on Gizeh back in October 2007 alongside a string of dates with Beggars Banquet new-boys iLiKETRAiNS. The band centers around a core of 4 in Thom Corah, Michael Love, Tom Morris and Adam Weikert but is often expanded for live shows to include David Dhonau(Cello) and Sophie Barnes of The Rosie Taylor Project (Trumpet). This recording features the string section of The Monroe Transfer on "New England."
"The Heritage" is Her Name is Calla’s second release for Gizeh and it is a much darker and harrowing affair. Self-recorded and produced by the band it appears to open up a deeper and more turbulent mind-set. The fury spewed forth throughout the closing stages of live-favourite "New England" - complete with a quite epic string section - pulls this mini-album to its loudest and heaviest moment. There is even room for a hidden-track in "Long Distance Runner," an old song dug from the ground to again see the light of day.
Here is Her Name Is Calla's "The Heritage" tracklisting:
2. New England
3. Paying For Your Funeral
5. Motherfucker! It’s Alive and It’s Bleeding!
The EP will be available in CD and Limited Edition of 20 cassettes on June 9, 2008. This release is now available for pre-order through the Gizeh Online Store.
Swedish melodic metal masters LION'S SHARE have issued the following update:
"[LION'S SHARE's latest album] 'Emotional Coma' is now out in all planned territories. The release dates got a bit spread out (Europe - June 2007, Asia - November 2007, North America - January 2008, Russia - February 2008, South America - March 2008), but now we will focus 100% on recording the follow-up apart from some live shows we're doing in Europe during May. If everything goes as planned, we will mix the album end of June and release it in October."
"The reactions [to] 'Emotional Coma' were so overwhelming that we feel very confident to continue developing this style and direction on the next album. The sick life of Charles Manson is the foundation of the album lyric wise, but also deals with other happenings from that era. Many revolting and strange things happened in the shadow of the Cold War and the Vietnam War in the late '60s. Music-wise, the new songs are a bit more 'direct' and 'catchy' but still very 'metal.' The new songs are simply awesome and we are absolutely sure this will be our best album to date." More...
