After finishing off a very eventful past year of promotions for previous album release, "Bilateral" (reviewed here), acclaimed Norwegian progsters Leprous entered the studio to start recording their next album after wrapping up the "European Progressive Assault" headlining tour in September/October 2012.
This new album is entitled "Coal," and it will be released on May 20th in Europe and on May 28th in North America via InsideOut Music. Leprous singer/synth-player Einar Solberg comments about the release:
"With our upcoming album 'Coal,' I feel we are one step closer to a personal expression. Heidi Solberg Tveitan (StarofAsh) and Vegard Tveitan (Ihsahn) of Mnemosyne were the producers of this album, together with Leprous. They helped us a lot with reaching the full potential of the songs, and the album would not be equally good without their expertise.
"Jens Bogren and Tony Lindgren @ Fascination Street Studios mixed the material and have made this album shine like nobody else could. I see less interest in defining music than in creating music, but I will give a short overview on what to expect...
"'Coal' is a more melancholic and darker album than the more playful 'Bilateral.' By darker I don't mean more aggressive, but more severe. There is still a big range in the dynamics, but no jumping between different moods within a song. We cannot wait to show this album to the world!" More...
Rio de Janeiro black metal act Black Vulture has released new songs from the band's upcoming album "Medo."
One-man metal act Common Dead has released "Modern Obsolete," the debut music video supporting the latest offering, "Allegorize," and the project's 7th official video in total. Check out the clip below.
The song's instrumentation and vocals are the lone work of Common Dead's Andrew Laurenson, and so was the video's overall production and animation segments. This is the second time the band founder has tackled all facets of a music video alone, the first being "Critical Mass" which hails from the 2012 album "Diatribe."
The 9-track effort "Allegorize" was released via online stores today. According to a press release, "the album draws from technical death and post-thrash styles similar to Lamb of God, Gojira, and Machine Head, while evolving towards new vocal tones and song structuring for Common Dead." More...

"The new album is a step up both in song writing, performance and production. It also varies from the doomiest they've ever done to the most classic heavy metal they ever done, and if that's not enough: the most garage they've ever done. Fans of Devil will not be disappointed, and with a higher standard on all accounts, we can all be confident that 'Gather The Sinners' will be a worthy sophomore album." More...

Hessian has inked a deal with Southern Lord Recordings for the release of an album this Spring. The following press release was issued about the band:
"When confronted with the imminent destruction of our world, do we turn our heads and go our ways? Or do we look for means to channel our rage, to give voice to that frustration and turn it into a weapon? Do we search for what is real and worthwhile in the debris? Something that goes for the throat and doesn't let go until the last drop is spilled?
"Buried deep in the consciousness of its four members at the time, it was these exact questions that gave rise to Belgium's Hessian three years ago. From the onset, the combined musical backgrounds of guitarist Levy Seynaeve (Amenra), drummer Tim Bryon (The Black Heart Rebellion), vocalist Bram Coussement and bass player Kenneth Vanhoutte fell effortlessly into place, pushing a sound that was at once pummeling, devouring and empowering across the rural fields where they started rehearsing.
"After a well received debut EP, a split 7" with Amenra, a split LP with Pale Creation on Magic Bullet Records and countless shows throughout Europe, Hessian have found a new home with Southern Lord who will unleash the band’s debut album, Manégarmr to the North American masses on April 30th.
"Named after the wolf which, in Norwegian mythology, devours the sun every night, Manégarmr focuses both sonically and lyrically on the endless cycles of destruction that are imminent to this life and the world in which we live. From the soaring take-off of 'Ascension,' via the treacherous calm of central pieces 'Vamacara' and 'Father of Greed,' to the merciless onslaught that is 'Mother of Time.' More...

Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of Murmur, issuing the following statement:
"The American experimental black metal band has just been added to the Underground Activists division. The Chicago based quartet started off in 2007 and immediately received underground recognition. With the release of their fierce and utterly disturbing debut album in 2010, more accolades followed before the band embarked on an even stranger but no less frightening musical journey on a split EP with Nachtmystium the next year, which earned them international acclaim."
“We are extremely excited to be working with Season of Mist, and to have the opportunity to reach a wider audience,” guitarist Matthias Vogels comments. “Murmur started as a depressive black metal project with the debut ‘Mainlining the Lugubrious’, but after a pretty significant line-up change as well as a strong desire to satisfy my eclectic musical tastes, Murmur has mutated into a fusion of black metal with progressive rock, zeuhl, and 1970's style jazz fusion."
He goes on to say, "We continue to grow and mutate our sound with every new piece. For a long time I thought we were trying to find our niche with all the experimentation, but it seems to me that our niche is not having one at all. Murmur's future goals are to continue writing and release another full-length within the next 1-2 years. Another major goal is to embark on US and European tours." More...
