Shining Part Ways With Bassist

Swedish black metallers SHINING have issued the following update;

"Phil A. Cirone [bass] has decided to once again leave SHINING. There is absolutely no bad blood him and the band inbetween. SHINING thank him eternally for his years of dedication and death! This will not effect our coming ceremonies as Phil will remain a live musician until a replacement has been found.

"We have decided that in the search of a new bassist we are going to hold an audition where we invite you to try out for us. We are not looking for any session members whatsoever so the place is permanent to whoever might suit the band, thus the requirements as seen below. We need you to record a videoclip where you show off your skills and send it to us along with a motivation of why you want to join SHINING and what you think you could contribute with as both musician and person to the band. We need all applications in hand before the 1st of March as we intend to tour pretty much the rest of the year as well as recording our sixth album. Once we have gone through the material you have sent we will choose the best ones and invite you to Oslo, Norway where we will play a few songs together to see who will become the new bassist of SHINING.

Requirements:

* SHINING has to be your main priority and nothing can come between your obligations towards the band.
* You have to live in Sweden or without hesitation move to Sweden once you are offered to join.
* You have to either know or learn our past to be able to participate in promotional matters.
* You have to have live-experience and preferbaly touring-experience.
* You have to be able to tour more than 100 days per year.
* You have to be able to enter the USA.

"Send your videoclip along with your motivation to: bookingshining@hotmail.com
Our by snail-mail to our manager at: Conny Jarlestål, A-ringen 71, 30255 Halmstad, Sweden."

SHINING's latest album, "V - Halmstad", was released in North America on June 26, 2007 via Osmose USA/The End Records.

SHINING filmed its controversial February 3, 2007 concert at Diezel in Halmstad, Sweden for an upcoming DVD, entitled "Fy Fan För Livet!" In addition to the live footage, the disc will consist of a two-hour "road movie" and the promotional video for the new song "Låt Oss Ta Allt Från Varandra". Blut Aus Nord Begin Work On New Album

French experimental black metal masters BLUT AUS NORD have commenced work on their next album, entitled "Dialogue With The Stars". The conceptual sequel to 1996's "Memoria Vetusta" will be released later this year on Candlelight Records.

Commented the band's singer/guitarist Vindsval: "This album is extremely important for us, we have already composed two amazing songs in the majestuous vein of 'Fathers Of The Icy Ages'. This time you won't find any industrial sounds or disharmonies on the album.

According to Candlelight, "twelve years later, you can hope an ambitious and massive piece of epic, technical and progressive black metal."

BLUT AUS NORD's latest album, "Odinist", was released last October through Candlelight Records.

Formed in 1994, BLUT AUS NORD have enjoyed a steadily increasing worldwide sales and fanbase. Metal Maniacs, Terrorizer, Kerrang!, Decibel and many others commend the band's sinister sound, often likened to a metamorphis of DARKTHRONE, NEUROSIS and GODFLESH.

Slipknot Guitarist Posts Update

SLIPKNOT guitarist Mick Thomson has issued the following update:

"Been away for a bit. I'm sure I was missed. Or something. Or not.

"I'm here to confirm the [Rockstar Energy] Mayhem tour rumor shit and say that we are starting to record in a couple weeks. We have been writing for a while and we are trying to be done recording some time in late March. Regardless, we will be back on the road this summer and for the better part of the next two years. New stage show, set list, visuals, expectations. We don't repeat ourselves as artists and know that fans don't want the same either."

SLIPKNOT is scheduled to enter the studio this month with producer Dave Fortman, who's previously worked with MUDVAYNE and EVANESCENCE. An August release via Roadrunner is expected.

SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED will lead the first-ever Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival, set to kick off July 9 at the White River Amphitheatre in Seattle. Joining SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED on the main stage will be DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON. In addition, the tour will have two second stages: one sponsored by Jägermeister and featuring SEVENDUST, AIRBOURNE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, 36 CRAZYFISTS and the Jägermeister Battle of The Bands Winner. An additional second stage will feature MACHINE HEAD, BLACK TIDE, SUICIDE SILENCE, THE RED CHORD, and WALLS OF JERICHO.

SLIPKNOT percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan recently told Revolver magazine that the masked nine-piece from Iowa is coming from a "different place" as it prepares to record its fourth major label album. When asked what has changed since 2004's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", Crahan replied, "I can't stress enough that we're going into this from a different place. When we did (2001 album) 'Iowa', we hated each other. We hated the world; the world hated us. The next record ('Vol. 3') was like rehabilitation. We had all this healing that needed to happen. Now, everything feels good because we feel good."

SLIPKNOT went on hiatus at the end of 2005, when it finished touring in support of "Vol. 3". Since then the band members have worked on various other projects, including a second album from singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root's STONE SOUR.

Crahan said, "These breaks that we take, they get our appetites going. They let our brains slow down and then speed up again. We gotta decompress for a little bit just to feel human if we're going to be forced to be here in this reality."

The full interview with Crahan is in the February issue of Revolver, on sale now.

Gene Simmons Explains Lack Of New KISS Music

Cameron Adams of Australia's Herald Sun recently conducted an interview with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. A few excerpts from the chat follow;

On having his and partner Shannon Tweed's facelifts filmed for their reality series "Gene Simmons Family Jewels":

"If you want to see me wiping my ass on camera I will. I'll take a s--- on air, I don't care.

"I'm delusional. I thought I was beautiful before and I'm even more stunning now. The male of the species doesn't have to worry about those things, we just have to have a good job, then we'll attract the female.

"The female of the species is unfortunately stuck in that biological thing of stimulating the male of the species. Which is why the beauty industry is so powerful — women."

On being "happily unmarried" to Tweed since 1985:

"Women reluctantly point to our family and say it works. But they don't like the non-married part because no social security is involved: a financial obligation, if you will. I refuse to have a financial obligation to anyone other than the mother who gave me life.

"Women's biology means they make one or two eggs a month and by their middle years stop being able to procreate entirely, so their biological urge is to corner a man so when they can't reproduce they have a man.

"The phrase is 'I'm going to get my claws in him' or 'he's a good catch' — because he's trying to run away. Man's tendency is not to stick around. Which is unfortunate when you look at all the fathers and husbands who've walked out. Women are never surprised when that happens, they're just surprised it's happened to them.

"The reason I'm crazy about Shannon is she's a modern, 21st-century woman and she should be teaching all other women to get a life, get a hobby. Stop torturing the men."

On his arrangement with Tweed:

"I just don't care. That's why you never read about me in those trash mags women are addicted to. If I go to a strip club, and when I'm in Australia I intend to, I'll stand in front of the club and pose with the strippers all you like. You can take my photo and put them in your magazines because I'll be smiling."

On writing a book called "Ladies of the Night" — "a personal and historical perspective of the oldest profession in the world":

"They [prostitutes] make a very good living doing what biology dictates, which is they charge for their companionship.

"What's the difference between that and a 15-year-old kid who eagerly tries to feel up his girlfriend but has to pay for the movie tickets and take her out to dinner? Men will always pay, they have always paid, call it what you will — whether it's marriage, girlfriend or ladies of the night.'

On his two well-adjusted teenagers Nicholas and Sophie:

"They're both extraordinary young people because that's their job. They have no other purpose except to do well in school and be charming. I'll take care of all the rest, I'll risk my life, I'll make all the money.

"The idea of negotiating with kids is lunacy. It's pathetic what's happened to the male of the species. The father disciplinarian has all but disappeared in society. I see all these grown men negotiating with kids who've just learnt to wipe their asses. It's f---ing lunacy.'

On why there is no new KISS album:

"There's no new KISS material because there's no record industry.

"Any band who tries to do new material is trying to climb a slippery mountain. Every day record companies are folding. It'd be nice to have new KISS songs, but what's the business model? Do you just put songs on the Internet for free? Then what?'

Obituary Frontman Posts Tour Wrap Up

John Tardy, singer for Tampa-based death metal legends OBITUARY, has issued the following update:

"Another successful European Tour complete and we all made it home safely. Five weeks on the road and that bus could not have felt any smaller, but we really had a good time! We made it home on Wednesday and it has taken me a couple of days to get into my office and get the website updated. I still have a bunch of photos to go through and I will work on those and get them up as soon as I can. To back up several days, I have to say that the show in Belgium was one of the best shows of the tour. Belgium, all I can say is thank you! You guys always take care of us and we really appreciate it very much. We finished up the tour in London, and thank all of you as well, then took the 'redeye' ferry and made it back to Amsterdam before on flights left on Tuesday. It made for a couple of busy last days, but it all worked out.

I would like to say thanks to HOLY MOSES and AVATAR - five weeks and no cancelled shows means a lot of hard work by everyone. We wish both of you all the best and hope you keep in touch! To all of our crew guys - you make it happen every day and we could not do it without you. One last time, to all our fans...Thank you...Thank you...Thank you!!!!!!! You are the best!!!!

We hope to have some shows in South America in April. We never did play a show in Tampa on our US Tour, so hopefully we can set one of those up sometime soon. Then we will be back in Europe during the summer for a big run on the festivals!!!!! Those are always a good time." More...

Denial Fiend Writing New Songs, Fest Appearances

Denial Fiend members Kam Lee and guitarist Sam have issued updates on Denial Fiend and more:

Kam Lee comments: "DENIAL FIEND is busy working on several things at the moment. First of all we've confirmed several U.S. festivals including the Los Angeles Murderfest in April, and the Central Ill Metal Fest later this July. We're also working on a few European festivals throughout the summer and will release more information as those dates get confirmed.

"Additionally DENIAL FIEND's been creating brand new material including two tracks, 'C.H.U.D.' ( Cannibalistic Humanoid Under Dweller ) - based on of the 1984 movie with the same title, and 'THE BLOOD REAPING' - which is based on of the horror comic strip called 'The Blood Reaping Of Dr. Gore' created by horror artist ZORNOW.

"I've been talking with artist ZORNOW about new art concepts and ideas for future DENIAL FIEND projects which will include new T-shirt designs, new album cover art as well as a mini horror/gore comic book by ZORNOW (to be included with the next DENIAL FIEND release.)

"Also in the works from my end... keep an eye out for the new release by the band BLOOD FREAK out on Razorback Records. Their new album is intitled - 'Scared Stiff' - and it was 'yours truly' that wrote the lyrics for the title track. I will hopefully be doing a guest vocal appearance on that track as well!

"So 2008 will be a Horrorfilled year indeed, with the Horror Metal Legion growing stronger and DENIAL FIEND leading the zombie hordes onward to cunsume as much fresh flesh and brains as we can devour!"

Sam, guitarist of Denial Fiend, comments: "DENIAL FIEND will be playing on March 7th at the Crowbar in Tampa, FL. We will play several covers (Samhain, The Accused, Misfits) on top of our regular set showcasing songs from last year's debut full-length, "They Rise". The show will be recorded for a possible upcoming release on Ibex Moon Records sometime this year. We're proud to perform cover songs from bands that have influenced us greatly throughout the years. Hopefully we'll play a few of them good enough to be released. In any case, it'll be a lot of fun."

Velvet Revolver Australian Tour To Go Ahead?

VELVET REVOLVER's Australian tour will go ahead as planned despite the fact that the group's frontman, Scott Weiland, has just gone back into rehab, Australian promoter Chris O'Brien told Undercover News. "We have not been told that the tour has been affected and right now I can say that it is still 100% going ahead," O'Brien said.

The Australian tour — which is set to kick off February 15 — was originally scheduled to take place in December but was postponed and the Japanese tour was cancelled because of visa problems.

In a statement released late last night, VELVET REVOLVER's management confirmed that Weiland "voluntarily entered a rehab facility" following the band's February 6 performance in Los Angeles. As a result, Thursday night's scheduled performance in San Diego was cancelled.

Weiland was arrested on November 21, 2007 when he crashed his car while driving on an L.A. highway.

He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs with a prior conviction, and with an allegation that he refused a chemical test as required by law.

Soilwork Frontman Speaks On Lineup Changes

Jeffrey Easton of Metal Exiles recently conducted an interview with SOILWORK frontman Björn "Speed" Strid. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Metal Exiles: "Sworn To A Great Divide" is the new record. What do you think the biggest jump from "Stabbing the Drama" to this one is?

Strid: "I would say it is more diverse, the heavier parts are heavier and the softer parts are softer. It doesn't sound forced, we struck a balance in our sound. We also brought back the thrashier influences as well."

Metal Exiles: What is the biggest differences between Peter's [Wichers, former guitarist] playing and Daniel's [Antonsson, new guitarist]?

Strid: Peter had his way with writing songs but now it is a band effort, everybody has been involved. Daniel came in during the writing process for this album, but he did not have to adjust to write SOILWORK music, it came pretty natural for him. He co-wrote the title track with Ola [Frenning, guitar] and he has a thrashier guitar player."

Metal Exiles: You guys came from a dark background. What do you think is the biggest difference from then to now is?

Strid: "I guess there is more groove to it and the melodies come out in a different shape. The vocals have taken over more of the guitar melodies, it is hard to say. In the beginning it seems like we are adapting a style, sounding like many of the bands in the Gothenburg scene."

Metal Exiles: How have you adapt your vocal style to that?

Strid: "I just wanted to further develop my voice like the guys developing on their instruments. It was a natural step for me to actually try out something new. Devin Townsend actually inspired me to do something like that. He made me do melodic vocals but something would come across confident and extreme."

Metal Exiles: What was it like working with Devin considering he is such an eccentric guy?

Strid: "He made me feel relaxed in the studio and I have wanted to work with him for a long time but he was always to busy. I went to Vancouver to his studio and locked my self in with him to work on my vocals. It was a great experience, just like two buddies recording vocals in the basement together."

Metal Exiles: What did you take away from doing that?

Strid: "That I will continue to record my vocals with him producing them."

Dream Theater Announce Dates With Opeth And More

New York progressive metal pioneers DREAM THEATER are set to unveil their maiden voyage of "Progressive Nation", a package tour they will headline that will also feature the talents of OPETH, 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

The tour is the brainchild of DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy, who explains, "I've been wanting to assemble a package tour like this for many years now. With all of the festivals and package tours that go through America, I've been talking with our manager and agent for over 10 years now about doing something that focuses on the more progressive, musician-oriented side of hard rock and metal. I decided it was time to stop talking the talk, lace up and finally walk the walk."

While DREAM THEATER co-headlined 2005's Gigantour alongside MEGADETH, as well as embarking on previous co-headlining runs with both QUEENSRŸCHE and JOE SATRIANI, they have primarily built their 22-year career on the road playing solely to their own audience. Portnoy comments: "I've always prided myself on personally hand picking new and exciting opening acts for DREAM THEATER in the past. Bands such as PORCUPINE TREE, SYMPHONY X, SPOCK'S BEARD, FATES WARNING, PAIN OF SALVATION and KING'S X. In all of these cases, it was important for me to pick bands that I admire and respect but also ones that I know our fans will enjoy. And I think playing with DT has helped expand all of those band's fanbases as a direct result. I am hoping Progressive Nation will continue to do the same thing in offering an audience for more daring and experimental acts that otherwise may not get the mainstream exposure they so rightly deserve."

Joining the bill for this inaugural run is Sweden's legendary OPETH who have been enjoying an ever-growing and expanding audience of their own for many years now. DT's Roadrunner Records labelmates will be ready to unleash their new album come next spring and Progressive Nation should be a great launching pad for their next world tour cycle. Guitarist/Vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt comments: "We're very excited about this upcoming tour with DREAM THEATER. It will be the first tour that we're doing in support of our upcoming record, and also somewhat of a dream come true personally as I've been a fan of theirs for a long time. It's quite intimidating to be on the bill with such amazing musicians but obviously we'll try and give them a run for their money and pull out a few nice licks of our own. I guess we'll need to practice a little bit for this....how boring! Yet, I can't wait for this tour to start and I'm sure we'll have a blast with the DT guys as well as together with the other bands on the bill!"

Also on the bill with their unique blend of pop, funk and hard rock is upstate New York's 3 who issued the following statement: "3 is very pleased to announce its participation in the Progressive Nation tour. For well over a decade DREAM THEATER has been the vanguard of progressive rock and we are completely psyched to flex with these heavyweights, playing much of our new record 'The End is Begun'. This package will rock and awe fans everywhere as one of the most important tours of the year. It's a progressive way of music, a progressive way of life....welcome to the Progressive Nation tour."

North Carolina's BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME are enjoying rave reviews and critical acclaim for their latest CD "Colors" and are looking forward to sharing the stage each night with both DREAM THEATER and OPETH. Vocalist/keyboardist Tommy Rogers comments: "We are very excited to be touring with two bands that have been such an integral part of our musical upbringing. It is a wonderful opportunity to have our music heard by new ears." More...

Crimson Glory On Hiatus

Metal Command recently conducted an interview with CRIMSON GLORY bassist Jeff Lords. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Metal Command: Can you give us an update on CRIMSON GLORY? What's the latest news for the band? Do you have songs for a new album as it's rumoured?

Jeff Lords: "We are on hiatus due to several contributing factors. The highest on the list of those factors is that the label that we were most recently doing business with — and thus, would back us, financially — went defunct. This was not long after we worked out the deal with them. Second on the list is probably the fact that our attempt at resurrecting the original lineup didn't come to fruition, and this was simply because a few of the older issues resurfaced ... the same issues that ultimately became an 'anchor' for the band in the past. Considering that and in conjunction with the former reason I think the momentum was simply lost. As far as for new songs, well, I think we individually all have some ideas floating around. However, we haven't actually woven any of them together, as of yet."

Metal Command: On Wikipedia website there is a title for the new CRIMSON GLORY album. According to the site it's going to be titled "Metatron, Lucifer and the Divine Chaos". Is this accurate?

Jeff Lords: "Yes and no! Yes, the original plan was to do the new album with said title. It was a semi-conceptual idea that Jon [Drenning, guitar] had been kicking around. No, in that I cannot say with absolute certainty what the proposed new album will be titled, or for that matter, if there will even be a new album. In the music business, everything is subject to change on a second's notice."

Metal Command: The current singer of CRIMSON GLORY, Wade Black, was re-hired for the band's new album. The first time he left CRIMSON GLORY, he said various things about his departure and about the band, like that you as a band haven't given him the respect he should have and that he was more like a hired musician to you. How did he get back in the band the second time?

Jeff Lords: "Some of the information that you have is not entirely accurate. We didn't re-hire Wade for the express purpose of making a new record; we re-hired him in an attempt to keep the band's momentum at that time ... and also, to essentially let the world know that CRIMSON GLORY would move forward, despite not having the band's original singer/lineup. As most of the world knows, we had done one album with Wade, so he was the logical choice. As far as Wade feeling like he was a hired gun, etc., I cannot comment too much on that, because this disclosure is fairly new to me. If we back up a bit, we first gained interest in Wade based on a time that Jon and myself happened to catch a show where Wade's band at the time, LUCIEN BLAKK, was playing. We felt that he had the charisma, the visual — and most importantly — the vocal cords, to be the new singer. Once we introduced ourselves, we also found Wade to be a pretty humble and easy-to-get-along-with guy. In my view, all of the aforementioned criteria is pretty much standard, and most certainly, they are all very admirable attributes for a singer to have. In other words, they are things that would make one feel empowered … that is to say, things that would eliminate doubt in one's mind, as opposed to creating it. In any event, I suppose it's kind of hard to avoid feeling 'hired' in situations where one guy replaces another. I think that's the nature of that type of situation."

KISS Guitarist Answers Fans Questions

KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer recently answered a few questions from fans via his official web site. The question-and-answer session follows:

Q: My question is regarding the non-make-up material that featured Bruce Kulick on guitar. I know that the Les Paul is almost as much a part of the Spaceman persona as the silver makeup and lightning bolts, but I was wondering if you would ever consider using a guitar equipped with a whammy bar for songs like "Unholy" and "Tears Are Falling". Are you guys going for more of an Ace Frehley vibe on the Bruce stuff? Also, is there any chance of you convincing Gene and Paul to add "Carnival Of Souls" material? Many of us really love that album and would enjoy hearing it live.

Thayer: "I've played a Les Paul since I began playing guitar, with much of my early influence coming directly from KISS and Ace. I did play some whammy bar stuff in the '80s, but I'm mostly born and bred on Gibson Les Pauls. So that would naturally be my approach onstage. If an 'Unholy' or 'Tears Are Falling' finds itself in the KISS set list, I would naturally adapt that solo to a Les Paul and 'classic KISS' sort of approach so that it works seamlessly with all of the other songs."

Q: I read recently that one of your favourite guitar players is Brian May. I also love your guitar tone — man, it's amazing — so I was just wondering: how do you get the sound?? I know that you play Les Pauls, but what about effects and amp type and settings?

Thayer: "Another good question. I've recently began using Hughes & Kettner Duotone amplifiers, which I love. I'm a true believer that the way a guitar player plays the guitar attributes more to the tone and sound than anything else. This never dawned on me until once I was watching a club band play at the Whisky in Hollywood back in 1982. The guitar player had an OK tone but wasn't that impressive. Suddenly they announce a special guest coming up onstage. Randy Rhoads walks out and picks up the other guitar player's guitar and plugs into the guitar player's amp. Amazingly, the guitar sound was instantly huge and ballsy. It sounded completely different. So that stuck with me and I've seen and heard that happen time and time again. I don't use effects on my sound, except an octave divider on one solo."

Q: Tommy, Are there any plans for another "Kissology"? Part 3 was fantastic, but I would love to see a part 4 with the current line-up that shows all of the rare songs you have performed and some of the special shows over the past few years.

Thayer: "I think it's certainly possible that there will be more 'Kissology' [releases]."

Q: Just exactly how tall are you with out the platforms? There has been some debate on it. A few of us have said you are around 6ft tall or 6ft 1. Some of us (me included) have said about 6ft 2 or 6ft 3. Others have said you are taller at 6ft 4 0r 6ft 5. So again I ask, just exactly how tall are you?

Thayer: "You girls want to know everything! I'm 6' 2 1/2" tall. Gene and I are exactly the same height. My platforms are about 5 inches, whereas Paul and Gene's are 6 or 7 inches. Hope that answers it!"

Velvet Revolver Singer Back In Rehab

The following official statement has been issued from VELVET REVOLVER:

"Following VELVET REVOLVER's performance last night [Wednesday, February 6] in Los Angeles, lead singer Scott Weiland voluntarily entered a rehab facility. Tonight's San Diego show at the House of Blues has been postponed; the rescheduled date for San Diego is [to be announced]. VELVET REVOLVER deeply apologize to their fans and thank them for sticking by the group."

Weiland was arrested on November 21, 2007 when he crashed his car while driving on an L.A. highway.

He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs with a prior conviction, and with an allegation that he refused a chemical test as required by law.

According to MTV.com, Weiland has been arrested multiple times over the past decade for a variety of drug offenses in California and New York, and has spent time in jail on several occasions. He was arrested in 2003 in Hollywood after a traffic accident and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, though those charges were eventually dismissed after he successfully completed a drug rehab program and submitted to drug tests.

Weiland recently the Miami Herald to be on the lookout for a STONE TEMPLE PILOTS reunion in the months ahead. The band members are reportedly on good terms again after their less than friendly break-up in 2002, and Weiland told The Pulse of Radio a while back that he wouldn't rule out getting back together. "I think that there is always that distinct possibility," he said. "I have to say it would never come in the way of VELVET REVOLVER, but I don't think that the story has been completely told. I'm unhappy with the ending of the story."

Although he was supposed to perform with VELVET REVOLVER on January 20 at a party in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival, Weiland was a no-show for the gig. The vocalist's flight to Utah was diverted because of bad weather. The band carried on with the show, inviting audience members and singer Donovan Leitch to pitch in.
