September 29, 2007. The date of Machine Head’s gig at Montreal’s late and lamented Le Medley, holding the distinction of the most claustrophobic and brutally violent metal show I’ve ever attended. Now a few years older and wiser – and with a job to do – I had little intention of getting physical on February 4, 2012, but what this date of “The Eighth Plague” tour would surely lack in danger to my person, I expected it to make up enormously in scale, scope, and overall grandeur. After over three years in a coma, Chi Cheng is now beginning to emerge from an unconscious to partially conscious state. Cheng is now able to move his leg when commanded but is still otherwise unable to move or speak aside from being able to make grunting noises since October. Those looking to see Cheng's Progress can check out the official website for his recovery fund.
Cheng was injured in a car accident in late 2008 which left him comatose and requiring surgery to remove part of his brain. Seven months after the accident, he was no longer on life support. Two years later, Cheng Began to briefly emerge from his coma in short intervals. More than a year later, Cheng is able to respond to commands more often and now has the use of his legs.
Even after a benefit concert and single, Cheng's family is running out of money. The family only has $17,495 our of the $250,000 that they need to hopefully give Chi Cheng a full recovery.
Cheng recently underwent surgery earlier this month, after which he showed signs of improvement. His recovery has been incredibly slow but he has shown steady improvement over the course of the past two years.
We catch up with bands and fans all over the world to get their best pit stories from metal shows every week. This time around bassist Kent Haines from Australian act Lynchmada shares the following tale of a missing leg that went crowd surfing:
We were playing an all ages venue in Brisbane City called the Lions Den where bands such as Parkway Drive and The Amity Affliction also cut their teeth.
It's a cranking moshpit with kids crowd surfing and the venue was packed to the brim at about 300 people inside this hall, when I see what looks like a crutch being passed through the audience like a crowd surfer. At this point I was thinking 'Wow, someone who is on crutches must be pretty game going in THAT pit!' Anyway, it finally lands on the stage and our singer picks it up and holds it aloft. It ain't no crutch, it was someone's false leg! To which we were all in hysterics once we realised what it actually was, so he yells out in between laughter "Does anyone own this?"
We see this taller kid hopping through the crowd laughing with his hands out, and low and behold the guy only had one leg, his friends had taken it off him as a joke (with friends like that, who needs enemies right?), but he was having a great time anyway so I guess it was OK. Leg was returned promptly and a fun time was had by all. The end.
Lynchmada released the band's latest album "To the Earth" last year, and you can check out tracks from the release by heading over to the group's Facebook profile here.
Be sure to check back in again next Tuesday as metal fans and band members share their favorite pit stories.

Following several cryptic announcements on its Facebook page, Metallica went on live stream today to say that the band will be hosting its very own music fest this year in New Jersey. "Orion Fest," the name of the new music festival, will be hosted in Atlantic City on June 23rd and 24th.
The event will feature 22 artists, comedy and lifestyle elements. More than just music, the festival will also showcase the band's individual interests - and allow fans to interact directly with each of the band members. Orion Fest will be held at the decomissioned airstrip Bader Field and was chosen because of the equidistant nature of it from L.A. and Europe, and the proximity to Atlantic City lodging. Metallica plans to headline both nights, confirming the following acts for the festival already:
The Gaslight Anthem
Cage the Elephant
Gary Clark Jr.
The Black Angels
A Place to Bury Strangers
Metallica will be playing the "Black" album in full one night and "Ride The Lightning" in full the next night. Visit the Orion Music site for more information.
Vancouver, Canada metal mastermind Devin Townsend has posted the following update online through his official forum.
"I found as a reaction to the complications of decon and the sheer bulk of work thats been going on (seriously, it’s insane) my writing ended up going in 3 ways recently:
1) A very commercial sounding (for the most part) but beautiful and melencholic album full of easy to digest dev songs…Epicloud. I don’t know why it came out, but it did, so I’m going to get it out of my system.
2) Casualties of Cool: a duo with myself and Che (ki)… it sounds like haunted Johnny cash songs. late night music, completely isolated sounding and different than anything I’ve done. Che sings most of the leads, and it’s probably the truest reflection of who I am in life at this point. Trying to release it in tandem with Epicloud.
3) Z2 epic epic epic, complicated, musical, sci-fi, immense expense, the goal of it all I suppose."

Thrash masters Testament are finally coming up with a follow-up to the comeback album "The Formation of Damnation," with the upcoming full-length "Dark Roots of the Earth" to be released later this year.
Prior to the launch of the new album, Testament has been on the road in North America with fellow thrashers Death Angel and Anthrax. A week into the tour I caught up with vocalist Chuck Billy to get the low down on the album's progress and in inside look at the Testament touring machine.
Below is a complete transcription of our conversation, in which Chuck discusses Gene Hoglan pulling double duty on the tour, the band's drummer situation, the new album's lyrical themes, and even confirms what many fans of Eric Peterson's side project have long been waiting for: Dragonlord is finally working on a new album. Storm Corrosion, the collaboration project between Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt and Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson, has announced that it has signed on with Roadrunner Records. The label will release the duo's self-titled debut album on April 24th. The following press released was issued by Roadrunner Records.
"Roadrunner Records is pleased to announce the signing of Storm Corrosion.
Storm Corrosion is the long-discussed and highly anticipated collaboration between two of the modern progressive rock scene’s most innovative and multi-talented artists: Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth and Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson. The pair will release Storm Corrosion on April 24 via Roadrunner Records.
A little background information on the genesis of this project: Åkerfeldt and Wilson have been friends since the late ’90s, when Wilson co-produced Opeth’s revered Blackwater Park album. Over the years, they’d often spoken of working on a project together, but it wasn’t until recently that they managed to make something happen, when Mikael flew over to visit Steven in the U.K. and they ended up in Wilson’s home studio throwing ideas around. That visit was the nascence of a whole self-titled album, written and produced by the pair, and mixed by Wilson. More...

Believer vocalist Kurt Bachman has checked in with the following update concerning the band's forthcoming studio album.
"As we begin the writing process, I feel that this will be the most sensual of all Believer releases. Once again we are striving to create something unique, while not throwing away any riff just because it might not fit the typical Believer mold.
"This is part of the process we love and hate. We love being creative, yet we place intense pressure on ourselves to write something we’ll enjoy hearing and playing at least 2060 times. Of course, we are sticking to our two main goals: 1) Have fun and 2) Don’t die in the process."

Warrior Soul singer Kory Clarke has announced his departure from Chicago doom legends Trouble to form a new band called The Bones of Children with guitarist Russ Strahan (Pentagram/Land of Doom). Clarke commented on his Facebook page:
"This Metal Album will be high energy, with a fresh artistic approach to the genre without the limitations of the over '50 something religious crowd.' It will be so nice to be working without the shackles that a previous singer has left behind of a band that is over 30 years old and acts and sounds like it. I like to do progressive, pushing the boundary lyrics in an individualistic style, I don’t want to sound like Ozzy, like their old singer [Eric Wagner] tried to do. I am also glad when I look to my left on stage from now on, I will not be seeing 'Derek Smalls' in my peripheral vision. LOL. I just cannot play with people who are fundamentalist Christians, or too family oriented to the point that they can't tour, do records or knock down a few margaritas with me at the bar. This is rock n roll guys not the family channel."
The Bones Of Children will release its debut in fall 2012. More...

Westfield, Massachusetts based metalcore outfit Killswitch Engage has announced that the band has reunited with former vocalist Jesse Leach, following the recent departure of singer Howard Jones owing to his struggle with type 2 diabetes amongst other reasons. The band is currently recording a new album and will be performing in Europe this Summer.
Leach was a member of the band from 1999 to 2002, during which time he performed on the band's self-titled debut album and the subsequent sophomore effort, "Alive Or Just Breathing."
Wretched has entered the studio to record the band's third full-length album, "Son of Perdition." The forthcoming effort is set for a March 27th release and will be produced by Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, He Is Legend, For Today) at The Basement Studio in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Last year, Wretched solidified its line-up with the addition of industry-veterans Adam Cody (Glass Casket) and Andrew Grevey (Loculus) taking the positions of vocalist and bassist, respectively. "Son of Perdition" marks the first official appearances by Cody and Grevey since their inception into Wretched.
The band took "a huge step forward, musically," confirms guitarist and one of the two founding members Steven Funderbunk on the new record. Funderbunk goes on to say, "Lyrically, the fans can expect an apocalyptic-type theme that portrays a very personal experience. This record will include some of our darkest and most mature material written to date."
"Son of Perdition" also exposes a "more melodic approach to the Wretched sound," says Funderbunk, "A lot of the drums are harmonically matched with a lot of the guitar riffs. We also used a lot of cool chords we haven't used in the past. It's far more rhythmic and grooves more than our previous records."
Wretched will support "Son of Perdition" on this spring's Metal Alliance Tour beginning in March, hitting 31 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Dates are as follows: More...
