70,000 Tons of Metal Day 4: Doesn't get any better

Although there had certainly been nothing to complain about with the weather thus far on the cruise, the final full day heralded the most perfect weather we had seen yet: not a cloud in the sky, deliciously warm, and thankfully not too windy (which had previously been a problem from time to time). With a full complement of great bands to check out and oddly, no ill-effects from the previous night's alcoholic adventures, I was primed for an absolutely awesome day.

Check out the day 4 photos: Atheist, Alestorm, Gravedigger, Coroner, Amorphis, Venom, Suffocation. More...

Fear Factory Announces New Album Release Date

Candlelight Records today confirms June 5th as the North American release date for Fear Factory's new album, "The Industrialist." Produced by the band with Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly), the album was mixed by Greg Reely (Paradise Lost/Skinny Puppy/Machine Head). It features additional tracking by Logan Mader (Gojira/Divine Heresy/Five Finger Death Punch) and artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Devin Townsend).

"The Industrialist" is a conceptual album that brings to life a story scripted by vocalist Burton C. Bell. The album’s lyrics detail the plot of the original narrative while delivering Fear Factory’s massive signature sound. Bell reveals, “the album is a futuristic tale of an automaton, striving to survive by fighting for its existence within a desperate world. The lyrics tell the story while the music takes our industrial roots and blends them more perfectly than ever with our metal edge. And all without losing the sound that makes FEAR FACTORY a machine of sonic devastation. FEAR FACTORY fans of any era will not be disappointed.”

Clocking in at just under one hour, the album’s ten songs again unite Bell with guitarist Dino Cazares. It is the second album written by the duo, reuniting in 2009 after a seven year split. Cazares says, “collaborating with Burton again on the new album was like magic. Everything just fell into place naturally. It felt good to recapture the true sound of FEAR FACTORY, taking it back to where it all started while raising it to new levels.”

"The Industrialist" again pairs Fear Factory with long-time friend Rhys Fulber. Their collaborations together include five albums and two remixes, including the certified gold album Obsolete. “Rhys has been our secret member,” shares Cazares. “He is the one producer who has been able to understand what we have been trying to accomplish from the beginning and has opened our eyes to new things without sacrificing our original sound. His talents in production and keyboard/samples has made FEAR FACTORY stand out amongst the many bands of our genre.” More...

Cold World Announces New Tour Dates

Pennsylvania hardcore act Cold World has announced an upcoming string of tour dates in May and June, which can be found below. The band's publicist also commented:

"Cold World are a truly unique hardcore band from Wilkes-Barre, PA. After becoming one of the most talked about bands from their area, Cold World released the 'Ice Grillz' CD/7" EP on Lockin' Out Records in 2005. Touring worldwide in support of that release, Cold World cemented their reputation as one of the best bands in contemporary hardcore in only a years time.

"In late 2006, Cold World and Deathwish joined forces. Summer 2007 saw Cold World release their 'No Omega' CD/DVD, a collection of rare recordings through the 1917 label. In 2008, Cold World completed 'Dedicated To Babies Who Came Feet First,' on Deathwish Inc., which tells a chilling real life tale of struggle in the world as we know it today.

"From the opening bounce of 'Boom Bye Bye' it's apparent that Cold World's musical grit and power have risen to new levels to tell that story. This artistic progression is reinforced as the album unfolds. When the title track 'Dedicated...' explodes forth (featuring guest vocals by George of Blacklisted), it's clear that the band have crafted an unforgettable hardcore anthem. While standouts 'Roaches And Rats' and 'Whagwan (Featuring Warrior Queen)' combine a bleak lyrical commentary, hip-hop character, and hardcore intensity as only Cold World can. And with 'Do The Knowledge' and 'Time To Break Down' Cold World pay homage to longtime influences Life Of Agony andBiohazard, weaving together polished melodic vocal hooks and metal/crossover heaviness. Rex Brown Recounts Joining Kill Devil Hill

Rex Brown is no stranger to the metal world. He played bass for over twenty years with arguably the most influential metal band of the nineties, Pantera. He also joined Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo in the melodious, southern-fried Down. Brown later regrouped with Down band mates in New Orlean’s most celebrated doom/sludge band, Crowbar. After three decades of playing with established acts, Brown has joined a newcomer, Kill Devil Hill.

Kill Devil Hill will release its self-titled debut on March 26th, 2012. Although the group doesn’t have a full-length recording to build its fan base, the stickers and advertisements explaining who plays on the recordings should pique interest. Rex Brown joins drummer Vinny Appice (Dio, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell) in the completion of a dream rhythm section. Don’t expect the two to sit on their laurels while mindlessly hashing out elementary back beats. Kill Devil Hill's rhythm section shows an expertise of craft, carefully filling in gaps and showing a tightness normally reserved for artists with a long history together.

Although carrying a lighter resume, Kill Devil Hill members Mark Zavon and Dewey Bragg possess the chops necessary to follow Appice and Brown. Guitarist Zavon has experience playing in Mandy Lion’s WWIII and with Steven Pearcy of Ratt. Pantera is gone forever, but Zavon’s tricks, melodies and groove distantly echo Dimebag Darrell. Dewey Bragg possesses a voice in the tradition of fallen Alice In Chains singer, Layne Staley, but with the occasional aggressive bellow. His harmonies have a “whistle” quality that, according to Brown, is lacking in today’s heavy rock field.

Rex Brown had plenty to talk about in the following interview. His departure from Down, relationship with Vinny Appice, joining Kill Devil Hill and his opinion of Bragg and Zavon are all topics Brown addresses with honest thought. Read onward to learn of a new chapter is the legendary bassist’s career. More...

San Antonio’s very own Upon A Burning Body will finally be heading to the U.K. this summer to incite carnage at both Slam Dunk Festival and the might Download Festival at Donington Park. The band's publicist issued the following press release:

The San Antonio based group will also make their much anticipated European touring debut this May alongside The Word Alive, For The Fallen Dreams and I See Stars, which is definitely an event not to be missed.

"UABB caught the metal scene by storm with their debut offering, ‘The World Is Ours’, chocked full of crushing Pantera-esque grooves, dynamic riffing and captivating hooks. Their live performance is simply unmatched, which quickly had their name being spread by the masses throughout the scene."

Danny Leal (vocals) states: "Getting offered this tour is a dream! We have always wanted to go to Europe and we have worked so hard for it. Shit, we have never even been on a plane. We know you guys are ready to party just as much as we are so let's make this the party of all party's every night. Vektor Writing New Music

Vektor has checked in with the following announcement about taking a break from live shows to relocate and work on new material:

"You may already be aware of this, but we wanted to clarify: over the next few months Vektor will be relocating out of Arizona to Philadelphia, PA (no big story behind the reason -- we're all just needing a change in that direction).

"Due to that and other personal happenings (eg. a wedding!) Vektor will be outwardly quiet for the next couple of months. But rest assured that during this period, though we have a lot to take care of during the move, we are all writing and rehearsing insane new music, as well as preparing for and organizing the many tours to come by August and thereafter!

"Vektor is right now musically and internally the strongest we have ever been and hope you'll be patient with the short inactivity period while we get our 'real lives' squared away. During the wait you'll have the vinyl release of OUTER ISOLATION to look forward to, as well as other new merchandise... Details forthcoming.

"Thanks again for the support, this western tour alone had some of our best shows to date and touring by our selves we know that it is only because you guys are rabidly loyal and awesome. We recognize and appreciate that, and hope you'll stick with us and keep that up. The insanity has only just begun. SCI FI OR DIE!!"

OpEd

The Ultimate Sacrifice

To the diehard music fan, there is hardly an act more inconceivable than parting with The Collection. Most metal heads, those of us who still buy CDs, records, and even tapes, anyway, will pawn everything of value when times get tough, move back in with our parents, beg, borrow, steal, and take just about any form of mind numbing and depraved work imaginable to keep The Collection in our grubby, greasy little hands. Sadly, even this isn’t always enough, and in these economically turbulent and uncertain times, the hour inevitably comes when hard decisions must be made, and priorities must be put in order.
