American documentary photographer Peter Beste's book "True Norwegian Black Metal" will be issued on May 15 via Vice Books.
In the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called black metal has emerged in Norway. It has its roots in a heady blend of splatter movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Pagan mythology and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.
Peter Beste has spent the last eight years working in the milieu of this insulated and secretive community. Beste's access and insight has been absolutely without precedent, resulting in an amazing photographic journey. Beste has earned the respect and trust of this impenetrable, suspicious and often elitist community. With each visit Beste saw more, photographed more and eventually accumulated enough material for this book. "True Norwegian Black Metal" is a visual testimonial to this subculture. Peter Beste and editor Johan Kugelberg have created a unique photographic narrative that explores black metal from a truly visceral perspective.
With extensive contributions from the personal archive of Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, a unique opportunity is here presented to see original artifacts and ephemera from this secluded rock community, and to read accounts of these events in the words of the people who were actually there at the time.
"True Norwegian Black Metal" offers confrontational live performance photographs of a savage subculture set alongside the stark beauty and natural allure of a landscape often shrouded in darkness.
The book is comprised of:
* 160 pages of photographs of the following bands/individuals: Nocturno Culto and Fenriz of DARKTHRONE; Necrobutcher, Hellhammer, Blasphemer, and Maniac of MAYHEM; Samoth of EMPEROR; Frost of SATYRICON; ENSLAVED; Abbath of IMMORTAL; Gaahl, Infernus, King, and Kvitrafn of GORGOROTH; Nattefrost of CARPATHIAN FOREST; 1349; DIMMU BORGIR; ILDJARN; AURA NOIR; and many more
* Interviews/quotes from Frost (1349), Abbath (IMMORTAL), Fenriz (DARKTHRONE), Gaahl (GORGOROTH)
* Essay by authors and Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, including 32 pages of original artifacts, photographs, ephemera, and personal accounts by black metal's key figures from Krisiansen's personal archive."

Beste has scheduled a photo exhibition beginning May 8 at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City, with London, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Los Angeles shows to follow.

Charlie Benante, drummer for thrash legends ANTHRAX, spent Monday, February 11 back in the classroom. Benante turned the Woodlawn Middle School in Lawn Grove, Illinois into his own "School of Rock!" The accomplished Grammy-nominated musician was invited to the school to speak with seventh-graders about his experience with music, both as a student and a performer.
Benante commented: "My stepson comes home one day and says that he learned how to play 'Smoke On The Water'. I'm like, 'What?! That was one of the first songs I learned how to play too. They're still using that?' I thought it was great. He asked me, 'Would you come to the school and show the class some things?' He convinced me and I ended up doing it."
Benante spent a class period speaking to 75 music and art students about his experience learning how to play music, as well as all things ANTHRAX.
School librarian and technology director Howard Frishman, who organized the event, had this to say: "Charlie had a profound effect on the students. He's a great motivational speaker. There was a buzz going around school. When we first came up with this, we said, 'Let's do something cool the kids won't forget.'"
One lucky student was asked to come up in front of the class and received some one-on-one schooling from Benante. "Because of guitar hero, these kids who are 12 years old know songs like 'Madhouse' and 'Paint It Black'," said Benante. "They asked me to play those, as well as some LED ZEPPELIN."
"I also told them about how I went and took guitar lessons. I told them the lessons seemed boring at the time and that the last thing I wanted to do after a week of regular school was go to music school. But I told them later on that it all made sense to me, because I benefited from doing that. When I'm playing with the band, a certain rudiment will come out of me, and I can always trace it back to when I took lessons."
Benante and Frishman are already considering a second information session at the school, and the drummer hasn't ruled out the possibility of having the rest of the members of ANTHRAX there as well.
Benante and Ovation Guitars will be donating several guitars to support the music programs that are so important to today's youth.
According to HMV.co.uk, Roadrunner Records has set an August 11 UK release date (one day later in the U.S.) for the much-anticipated new SLIPKNOT album. The as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" is scheduled to be recorded with producer Dave Fortman, who has previously worked with MUDVAYNE and EVANESCENCE.
SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED will lead the first-ever Rockstar Energy Mayhem festival, set to kick off July 9 at the White River Amphitheatre in Seattle. Joining SLIPKNOT and DISTURBED on the main stage will be DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON. In addition, the tour will have two second stages: one sponsored by Jägermeister and featuring AIRBOURNE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, 36 CRAZYFISTS and the Jägermeister Battle of The Bands Winner. An additional second stage will feature MACHINE HEAD, BLACK TIDE, SUICIDE SILENCE, THE RED CHORD, and WALLS OF JERICHO.
SLIPKNOT percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan recently told Revolver magazine that the masked nine-piece from Iowa is coming from a "different place" as it prepares to record its fourth major label album. When asked what has changed since "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", Crahan replied, "I can't stress enough that we're going into this from a different place. When we did (2001 album) 'Iowa', we hated each other. We hated the world; the world hated us. The next record ('Vol. 3') was like rehabilitation. We had all this healing that needed to happen. Now, everything feels good because we feel good."
SLIPKNOT went on hiatus at the end of 2005, when it finished touring in support of "Vol. 3". Since then the band members have worked on various other projects, including a second album from singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root's STONE SOUR.
Crahan said, "These breaks that we take, they get our appetites going. They let our brains slow down and then speed up again. We gotta decompress for a little bit just to feel human if we're going to be forced to be here in this reality."
Guitar World Magazine reports:
Rumors have been circulating for some time, but Guitar World has confirmed that TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS is indeed the new lead singer for YNGWIE MALMSTEEN.
Yngwie announced the news to the Guitar World staff today when he came to the magazine’s New York headquarters for an exclusive interview and photo shoot.
Malmsteen and Owens, who formerly fronted JUDAS PRIEST, are hard at work on a new CD, which is currently scheduled for a July release.
Visit yngwie.org for more information.
As reported earlier today, according to The RAINBOW Fanclan Legacy, vocalist Doogie White and Malmsteen decided to part company after six and a half years together. Doogie joined the band in September 2001 and recorded two albums: Attack and Unleash the Fury.
"I had a long chat with Yngwie today and it is clear that he wants to move musically in a new direction. It's great news that he will be expanding on his undoubted talents both as a writer and guitarist. I just want to thank, publicly, Yngwie and the many band members past and present that I have worked with. It seems appropriate that we started our working relationship in South America in September 2001 and finished in South America in December 2007. Now anyone need a singer??"
Bristol based thrashers Seregon have updated their website with the following message:

The Pulse of Radio reports: More information has possibly crept out about the next movie from rocker-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie, titled "Tyrannosaurus Rex". According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, the movie is about a semi-professional wrestler named Tyrannosaurus Rex who is being pursued by a "biker gang from hell." If that is in fact the premise, it closely resembles a comic book that Zombie co-authored a few years ago, called "The Nail". Although a film version of "The Nail" was reportedly in the works at one point, nothing ever came of it.
Zombie created "The Nail" with hot horror comics writer Steve Niles, author of the graphic novel "30 Days of Night". Zombie told The Pulse of Radio at the time how the partnership began. "We got together and we're like the same age, and we sort of have the same background, you know, he was in these DC hardcore bands, and somehow we just were very similar," he said. "So we started working together and, I don't know, it just worked. 'The Nail' is pretty ridiculous, it's sort of like ('70s biker horror film) 'Satan's Sadists' meets ('70s Peter Fonda horror movie) 'Race With The Devil'."
Zombie has not made any public announcements about "Tyrannosaurus Rex" except for the title. The film is due out on August 28, 2009 and will follow his hit 2007 remake of "Halloween".
Zombie's upcoming animated film, "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto", was also based on a comic book character he created.
South German metallers DEADLOCK have extended their contract with Lifeforce Records. Says the label, "after their successful albums 'Earth.Revolt' (2005), 'Wolves' (2007) and the newest (yet-untitled) release to hit the stores in November 2008, their will be three more albums which will combine the typical DEADLOCK essences, a high standard mixture of extreme technical and melodic metal, the dual vocals by the band's singers Joe and Sabine and a good dose of gothic darkness."
Commented DEADLOCK drummer Tobias Graf: "It's a big pleasure for us to continue our collaboration with Lifeforce. They're doing an excellent job for DEADLOCK, so it's been a pretty easy decision to extend our existing deal with them. Furthermore we're the only good band on their label roster and we couldn't take the responsibility to leave them alone with all those other poorly acts."
Lifeforce Records CEO Stefan Luedicke stated: "I'm very happy that we have secured three more albums with DEADLOCK, one of the most promising bands around and not to forget one of my personal favorites on Lifeforce, even the band members have the worst haircuts ever. I'm really looking for the great things to come in the future and we at Lifeforce will be part of. You can be sure DEADLOCK is a band you'll hear and see from a lot in the coming months and years!"
GUILLOTINE, the reunited Swedish thrash metal band featuring Nils Eriksson (bass) and Fredrik Mannberg (rhythm guitar) of NOCTURNAL RITES, has issued the following update:
"A few days ago we started laying down the first few songs of drums and guitar for the [new GUILLOTINE album]. It feels amazing to have started this thing now after a few intense months of songwriting...and more importantly — after 10 years of absence from the scene! More info on label, title, expected release date and so on will be announced shortly."
GUILLOTINE recently posted two newly recorded demo tracks — "War" and "Blood Money" — on its MySpace page.
The band's debut album, "Under the Guillotine", was released in 1997.
In a 1998 interview with Chronicles of Chaos, Eriksson stated about GUILLOTINE, "GUILLOTINE plays music that is much more back to basics and rawer than NOCTURNAL RITES. It is so different. I feel that both bands are so far apart from what style and sound they deliver. It really isn't a task to be a part of both outfits. Making music is what I do and being in both bands keeps me busy. And when I'm busy, I'm one happy musician."
FOZZY — the band featuring vocalist Chris Jericho (of WWE wrestling fame) and members of STUCK MOJO — will release "All That Remains… Reloaded" on March 25 via BCD Music Group distribution. The set can be pre-ordered via Amazon.com.
"All That Remains… Reloaded" will feature the reissue of the "All That Remains" CD with new artwork and a bonus DVD featuring FOZZY live in front of 20,000 screaming fans in the UK.
In a July 2007 interview with The Baltimore Sun, Jericho had the following to say about FOZZY's current status: "We did a lot of touring [in 2006] in the UK. We've actually made a good name for ourselves in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We toured there five times between February '05 and February '06. We also toured Australia, Germany, Canada and a little bit in the States. We did kind of a world tour. Once you do that, in order to tour again, you have to work on a new record. That's where we're at right now. I've already written all the lyrics for it and the guys in the band are starting to come up with some riffs. But they [some of the other members of FOZZY] have another band called STUCK MOJO that they've been touring with all summer, so it goes back and forth. It's kind of on hold just until we can get time together to start working on a new record. We're very fortunate. The last record did a lot for us and it was cool because we got to headline at a lot of big places, especially in England. We played at the London Astoria three times and sold it out all three times, and that's a famous venue. THE BEATLES played the Astoria. IRON MAIDEN played the Astoria. Some really big bands still play there to this day, so just to go to places like that and sell them out and tear the house down, it's like you put a little checkmark by that knowing that, 'Well, we did that.' It's cool to know that you've been vindicated and know that the band got big enough to do that basically on our own with not a lot of help from anybody."
Chris Jericho last year released "A Lion's Tale: Around the World in Spandex" (Grand Central Publishing). The autobiography (book cover) focuses on the early days of his wrestling and performing career.
FOZZY recently released a collection of never-before-heard demos, early mixes and instrumental versions taken from guitarist Rich "The Duke" Ward's personal library.
"All That Remains" was originally released in January 2005 via SPV Records. A video for the album's first single, "Enemy", was filmed in San Diego, CA in December 2004 with director/British filmmaker Paul Hough.
"All That Remains" was produced by Rick Beato (SHINEDOWN, CHARLIE MARS, INGRAM HILL) and features guest performances by guitar legends Zakk Wylde (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY), Marty Friedman (ex-MEGADETH), and Mark Tremonti (CREED, ALTER BRIDGE). Gold-record-selling rap artist BONE CRUSHER also makes a special guest appearance on the record. More...
ABORTED vocalist Sven Dé Caluwe has posted this bulletin on the band's MySpace page:
"As usual we always want to involve the fans as closely as we can. For 'The Archaic Abattoir' we did the victim list and evidence bag, for 'Slaughter & Apparatus: A Methodical Overture' we invited fans to join us in our video shoot for 'The Chondrin Enigma'. This album should be no different. ABORTED would be nothing without the help of the fans and that is the way it will always be. This time we thought of involving you all in the creation of the new album! So we are launching a contest. Songwriting has been entirely done for the album and artwork
is near completion. However, we didn't finish one lyrics/song title for one of the tracks on the new album and this was the perfect opportunity to involve all you guys/girls in offering us what you think could be a perfect song title/idea for this final track on the new album!
Send in your submissions to aborted69[at]gmail.com. Song titles should obviously fit ABORTED and the themes we handle or something that can relate to it. If you have a clear idea, documentation is always welcome. Also include your full name in the email and address. The winner will be announced upon finishing the recordings and will be credited in the booklet/MySpace and receive a free copy of the new record as well as some merch. (The) deadline for this is Saturday February 26, 1PM CET! So move fast if you want to be part of the record! Cheers" More...
MEGADETH bassist James Lomenzo has posted this message on the band's official forum:
"My head's still reeling from an incredible UK run. Great, great gathering of metalheads both old and relatively new. Most the bands been pretty ill throughout this run but the fervor at the shows was overwhelming enough to distract us and overcome all that. I want to thank the bloke in New Castle who was kind enough to share his beer with me from the seventh row. At first I was pissed off (not pissed) and then I realized that it was probably just an old BLACK LABEL SOCIETY fan that owed me one. Thanks anyway!
Now we're back at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris. I'm sure I've been through this place at least five times in my career so it's always great to be here again. In a way, it even feels to me like being home again. Great!!!
Anyway, just checking in with y'all whilst we plow through Europe but just want you to know what a lovely time we're all having on this trip." More...

Grindcore masters PIG DESTROYER will be performing at the Black Cat in Washington, DC on Friday, April 11th. Also at the show will be MISERY INDEX, MAGRUDERGRIND, and THE WAYWARD.
Swedish art-rock behemoth CULT OF LUNA have entered Tonteknik Studios in their home town of Umea, Sweden, to record their fifth full length album.
The band have 8 songs ready to commit to tape, having spent the preceding weeks fine tuning the material that will look to build further on the success of Somewhere Along The Highway.
Although the band are yet confirm the title, the album will see the band attempt to adapt their sound, welcoming a harsher and more primal element to their already complex approach.
Guitarist/vocalist Johannes Persson comments cryptically: "As we close the doors of the Tonteknik studio and travel into unchartered musical ground, only one thing is sure; what will come out will have been born from pain and violence."
Cult of Luna's new album is scheduled for a June release.
The band have already confirmed the following shows this year:
19 - Oslo, Norway at Sub Scene, Inferno Metal Festival
20 - Oslo, Norway at John Dee, Inferno Metal Festival
19 - Tilburg, Netherlands at 013 Popcentre, Roadburn Festival
22 - Brittany, France at Hellfest

Dutch nihilistic black doom metal band BUNKUR has signed with Displeased Records. Their new full length album, "Nullify," is expected in the summer of 2008. The band's renewed line-up features Martin van Drunen (Pestilence, Asphyx) on vocals. Guest appearances on the album include Wannes Gubbels (Asphyx, Pentacle).
Ozzfest, the long-running touring metal package, is rumored to be morphing into a two-day "destination festival" in Dallas. There has been no official word yet on what format Ozzfest will take or who will be on the bill.
The rumors come in the wake of this year's arrival of the metal-oriented Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour, which will play 30 North American amphitheaters during July and August, the time when Ozzfest is traditionally making its rounds.
Last year's Ozzfest offered free admission, with fans acquiring tickets mostly through sponsoring web sites. But the acts were not paid either, which resulted in a decidedly less than impressive main stage lineup. The Mayhem trek has already robbed Ozzfest of two potential main-stage heavyweights in DISTURBED and SLIPKNOT, with fan favorites DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON also taking part in the Mayhem tour.
OZZY OSBOURNE is likely to headline Ozzfest as a solo act again, since his BLACK SABBATH bandmates are busy with their HEAVEN AND HELL offshoot.
The Mayhem tour is being co-produced by Kevin Lyman, who has the successful Warped and Taste of Chaos packages on his resume.
Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com reports that STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and LINKIN PARK will head the bill for the 2008 Edgefest in Toronto, which is returning after a one-year hiatus. The event will be held July 12 at Downsview Park.
Rounding out the bill are SAM ROBERTS BAND, THE BRAVERY, ASHES DIVIDE, ATTACK IN BLACK, ARKELLS, THE COAST, CREATURE, THE FLATLINERS, HOSTAGE LIFE, MODERNBOYS MODERNGIRLS, THE STEREOHOAX, SWEET THING and USS.
Tickets go on sale Saturday (March 1) to the general public; members of 102.1 The Edge's Inside Edge club will have access to a discounted pre-sale tomorrow.
Brazilian doomsters DESOLATE WAYS have posted their second video clip, 'Drowned In Tears', a song taken from their second effort, Tearful, which was released in 2007 by Erpland Records. The band worked again with Giselle Jacques, known South-American director which won several awards like 12º Gramado Cinevídeo and 8º Prêmio IECINE.
The band are working on the pre-production of the third album, which will be recorded in Nitro Sound Solutions, with the production of Roger Fingle, vocalist and multi-instrumentist of the band's BLOOD TEARS and SEDUCED BY SUICIDE.
In light of their recent line-up changes, Fjord has renamed themselves Reckoner. The group elaborates:
"Mike and Dan have decided to leave the band for personal reasons. There our no hard feelings and we wish them the best of luck. This left the rest of the of us in a shitty situation but we've decided to go on under a new name (Reckoner) and a little bit of new sound. Our new drummer is Chase White and he's a fucking man beast behind the kit and probably the craziest son of a bitch I have ever met in my life."
The band has posted two new demo tracks on their new MySpace page.
Daggermouth vocalist Nick Leadlay has temporarily left the band to seek treatment for "depression and anxiety." Here's a statement from the band:
"We're sorry to say that due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to drop off the shows between February 23rd and 28th. We will however be continuing on the Comeback Kid/ Crime In Stereo tour starting Feb 29 in Fargo, ND.
"Unfortunately, Nick will be unable to continue with us at this point. Nick has a history of battling with depression and anxiety, and on Feb 22nd life on the road finally caught up with him and his body basically gave up. After checking into the hospital it became apparent to Nick and everyone in the band that he needed to go home and seek help immediately. Until further notice Daggermouth will be touring with a replacement vocalist. To be clear, Nick isn't out of the band and we all plan for him to come back as soon as his health permits.
"Please come out to the shows in following months and show your support for Nick!"
The organizers of the Bloodstock Open Air festival have posted this message on the festival's website:
"The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that US metalcore outfit AS I LAY DYING have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2008."
As I Lay Dying will join a bill that includes Iced Earth, Dimmu Borgir and many more.
In addition to established bands, Bloodstock are also running a contest for unsigned bands to be a part of the festival. Unsigned bands can upload a live video of themselves and based on votes and rankings, could be invitied to perform at the event.
Still Remains are headlining their upcoming "The Serpent Tour" with support from Gwen Stacy, Catherine, and Secret and Whisper. They have a competition running right now for it where the top 5 cities with the most demanders will win a special pre-show acoustic set along with a meet & greet with them and the entire tour lineup. CHILDREN OF BODOM will perform at this year's Download festival, set to take place the weekend of June 13-15 at Donington Park, Leicestershire, UK. Although the Finnish outfit has been approached about the event a number of times in the past, a consistently tight schedule has never made it possible for them to take up the offer. Until now.
Says bassist Henkka T. Blacksmith: "We've been aware of the Download festival for a number of years now, but our touring & recording schedule has meant that we've just never been available at the right time. However, with the campaign for our new album, 'Blooddrunk', we plotted everything out well in advance, so if the offer to appear should come our way, we'd be ready... and we're delighted to say that it has! And we ARE! You know, it's a great pleasure for us to be involved with an event that has such an incredible history. Back in the early '80s, the Castle Donington festival was a truly ground-breaking event, one that every band dreamed of playing, and now in 2008 it's our turn to make a bit of history. See you down the front... then in the bar!"
Also scheduled to appear at Download are KISS, LOSTPROPHETS, THE OFFSPRING, JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD, RISE AGAINST, HIM, ALTER BRIDGE, DISTURBED, IN FLAMES and INCUBUS, among others.
In other news, June will see the reissue of the first four CHILDREN OF BODOM albums: "Something Wild" (1997), "Hatebreeder" (1999), "Tokyo Warhearts" (1999 – recorded live in Japan) and "Follow The Reaper" (2000), an album produced by noted musician and performer Peter Tägtgren, who recently rejoined forces with the band for parts of the recording of forthcoming CD, "Blooddrunk".
ARTISTdirect recently conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, ex-SEPULTURA). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
ARTISTdirect: What was the creative process like for CAVALERA CONSPIRACY?
Max: Well, it's moved very differently, just because I'm playing with Igor [Cavalera, Max's brother] again. That's a huge thing in and of itself. We spent more than a decade apart. For over 10 years, we didn't speak or see each other. When the idea came to do this album, I was very excited. So I wrote a lot of riffs and lyrics. I wanted to do something different from what I normally do in SOULFLY. I like both, but SOULFLY's more experimental. This is Igor and I going back to the roots of metal, punk, death metal and the shit we grew up with. I just threw down 11 classic metal songs and recorded them [laughs]. We had some good people working with us, too: Marc Rizzo, my guitarist in SOULFLY, is in the band. Joe from GOJIRA, a French band I like a lot, is playing bass. People are talking about the album a lot, and I'm very happy to be doing this.
ARTISTdirect: Was writing riffs different? This album feels thrashier.
Max: Not too much on my part, because my riffs are very basic, man. I cannot riff any other way. I play four strings, and I don't play lead. Even when I try to do something different, it always has that Max sound to it. It's good and bad, I guess. I think what's different, is Igor and I are together again. The songs have Max and Igor's secret playing style, which nobody can figure out — even us! When we play together, there's something cool that happens. It's very special. The brutal parts are super fast, but there are a lot of cool grooves too. Being from Brazil, we both are very into grooves and percussion. That's all I can think of as to why this project is different from SOULFLY, or even SEPULTURA. We're doing this right now, and we've been interested in all kinds of different music. I always let music influence my shit all the time. I'm not afraid to capture new music, so I think that's what's different. It's very thrashy, like you said. People are also saying, "It's the heaviest shit, I've ever done." So I'm good with that.
ARTISTdirect: It's very passionate, too. You guys just went into the studio and captured what was going on in the moment.
Max: It is, man. It's hard to understand, but my emotions are going really deep on this record, because I'm back with a brother I grew up with. Because of the music we loved so much, we didn't speak for 10 years. We were separated for this long period of time. The album's brutal and all, but inside of this brutality, there's emotion. It was a fucked up time for Igor and me, but we made it through together. We are brothers. It all shows on the record. So, I'm glad for that. It's definitely special. I'm always going to like this record a lot, because it's the first thing I've done with my brother in so long. More...
