To casual fans, Niclas Engelin may be the new "pledge" in the lineup of Swedish metal giants In Flames, but in truth, he's about as seasoned as new members come. A childhood friend and long-respected fixture of the legendary Gothenburg metal scene, Niclas and the band have crossed professional paths nearly half a dozen times. After temporarily replacing departed guitarist Glenn Ljungström to support "Whoracle" in 1997, Niclas returned intermittently to complete In Flames' lineup as a roiling battle with alcoholism consumed founding guitarist Jesper Strömblad, forcing him off the road. This relationship culminated in the band's February 2011 announcement that Niclas would permanently fill the slot vacated by Jesper a year prior. Later came a new studio album "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" (reviewed here), and now, a massive headlining tour across North America.
Prior to the performance at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts (reviewed here), Niclas and I sat down in a quiet boardroom off the lobby at the nearby Hilton. To his dismay, no coffee was available, but at least the M&M-filled cookies at the front desk were free. For half an hour, Niclas brought Metal Underground completely up to date. More...
Arizona isn't usually the first place thought of when discussing epic folk metal bands, but Adavänt defies the geographical odds with a huge symphonic sound and classic folk storytelling. The band dropped its first official full-length album "Tale Untold" (reviewed here) last year and is in the process of working on a follow-up.
Adavänt's Andy the Cunning checked in with Metalunderground.com to explain the recording process for the soaring album of characters on a fantastic journey, and to discuss how the band came together in an area not well known for this particular style. The full interview is available below, in which Andy talks about getting the album to sound like it had a full orchestra and choir with such a small cast, as well as the band's new RPG inspired single "A Random Encounter." Jucifer is one-of-a-kind for many reasons; they are an extremely heavy two-piece made up of man and wife team Amber Valentine on the mic and guitar and Edgar Livengood on the drums. For nearly twenty years, they have traveled the world without stopping with their incredible stage gear in tow; towers of amps that often fill the venues they play up to the ceiling. I was able to speak with the enigmatic Amber while she was on the road to talk about a nomadic lifestyle, their film career, and an album steadily being worked upon. More...
Since the 1980s, Asphyx has been a force in the realm of death metal, releasing album after album of crushing music. But through the decades, the band was inundated with problems from members leaving to entire breakups. But, after reforming in the 2000s, Asphyx seems stronger than ever and about to release a sure classic "Deathhammer." I was able to talk to vocalist Martin van Drunen about the album, the challenges the band has weathered, and what like-minded band he plans on spending time with in the States. More...

Brooklyn sludge rock ministers Hull are pleased to announce another stretch of tour dates this Spring. The short but epic run will commence on March 7th in Long Branch, New Jersey. From there the band will forge a path towards Austin to pillage the way through another SXSW Music Conference.
Commented the band in a collective statement: “The fires of life boil our blood as we anticipate the rising of the moon. Sharpening our steel for the open road, the Earth’s tides overwhelm the coasts. With much doom, the salted sands part as tortured souls spread their heavy upon the cracked crust of our Mother. Brother and Sister traverse the scarred country side, elating the spirits of willing followers as the skies blacken with the sorrow that is expelled. Once again, packed neatly in their battered vessel, HULL burn this candle of life and light the roadside within the depths of night. Accompanied by true warriors upon the first leg are Black Tusk, Royal Thunder and East Of The Wall. Raise your fists in revelry. Stand side by side as we carve deep into the soil of this turbulent wasteland.”

Every Time I Die has posted a video clip online for the song “Revival Mode.” The track is from the band’s upcoming new album "Ex Lives," set for release this March 6th via Epitaph Records. Check out the clip below.
The group’s singer, Keith Buckley, offers the following on the new video: "We worked with director Robert Schober who has done incredible work for Mastodon, Deftones, Metallica and now, us. The clip has a very ambiguously creepy David Lynch vibe to it and might be the first time we've never included a single one of our instruments in lieu of a story line that exists outside of us as members of a band. It's dark and weird and while not completely adhering thematically to the lyrics, it sets a larger, broader mood which marries the song perfectly."
Director Robert “Robo” Schober adds, "The video is a surrealist crime drama set on a lost highway...the story loosely interprets key phrases from the song...the guys were awesome and put up with many hours of freezing temperatures in the middle of the desert." More...

Gutwrench is set to release the band's debut CD on Razorback Recordings in 2012. Razorback commented on the band:
"We're excited to announce yet another killer band to join our deadly ranks! Gutwrench from Mexico! The band plays ungodly, low-tuned, morbid and doomy death metal in the most murky and grotesque way possible! No way to describe them, you just have to hear them for yourself!
"This album will be another horrific masterpiece of pure repulsive doom/death! Check out the band's official page to hear songs from their debut demo."

In January 2012, Allegaeon traveled to Southern California and entered Lambesis Studios with Daniel Castleman (As I Lay Dying, Impending Doom, Carnifex, Winds of Plague) to begin work on "Formshifter." The latest album brings forward a sound that both plays off the band's previous releases mixed in with some new flavors that will be sure to enthrall old and new fans alike.
Guitarist Greg Burgess had this to say about the new album, "With 'Formshifter,' I think we kept the sound a lot of our fans love about us, but achieved them through certain compositional challenges. Be it style, or genre mixing, I believe that we seamlessly applied certain elements we didn't have on Fragments, and it added a color and dimension we didn't have before."
Guitarist Ryan Glisan adds, "This album to me indicates the future of the band but nods to our past as well. It, to me, is more of where I have envisioned our band being since I started the band a couple years back, it relies on similar songwriting structures and musicality but adds more groove and memorable riffing than our previous efforts."
Lyrics, an oft over-looked facet of death metal is one the more interesting aspects of Allegaeon. The band crafts the lyrical prose with a bit of a different mindset - often touching on space, civilization and philosophy. Vocalist Ezra Haynes elaborates on the band's first single from the album; "'Tartessos: The Hidden Xenocryst' is definitely one that sticks out to me. I was raised on Edgar Cayce readings and tales of Atlantis. When Greg [Burgess] and I knew we wanted to touch base on an ancient civilization, Atlantis was the logical choice."
"Formshifter" will be released on May 8th, 2012 via Metal Blade Records. More...

LA's Armored Saint is excited to announce that the band will be heading to Europe in July. At Sonisphere in France, the Saint will be playing on the same day as Ghost, Evanescence, Wolfmother, Soulfly, Lacuna Coil, and more. Band Your Head's list of confirmed band's includes Arch Enemy, Exodus, Thin Lizzy, Primordial, and more. Dong Open Air also features Napalm Death, Sepultura, and many others. Along with the festival appearances, Armored Saint will be playing three headlining shows with UK's Collapse as the supporting act.

Not only are we doing the awesome Sonisphere show, we are also doing a headline club show in Paris. About fucking time. Also, we're extremely pumped to play the Bang Your Head festival again. It's one of the best metal shows in Germany. Plus, we get to be part of the DONG festival. First time there.
"The tour wouldn't be complete without playing in Holland, which is the first country Armored Saint ever played in Europe back in 1989; and Zurich, where it will be our first time to headline in the beautiful country of Switzerland. Armored Saint doesn't tour all that often so come out and join us, cause you're never sure when or if we'll be touring again. We'll be playing songs from our entire catalog as well as from our most recent record, La Raza, which we're extremely proud of. See ya this summer." More...

Edge of Serenity will release a new single featuring Adrian Erlandsson (Paradise Lost, At The Gates, Nemhain, Vallenfyre) on drums, which will also be the debut of new vocalist Nanette V.
Edge of Serenity decided in late 2011 to continue as a female fronted metal band. With this decision the band will lean to a more darker and sinister sound, with member Wietze stating, "As I always say, writing music is like living your life, it changes once in a while and so at this moment I just have the feeling of writing more darker songs than I did before. And I think with this sound I have found, we will continue, as it's not as friendly as the tracks on our debut album The Chaos Theory, but it gives me a more satisfying feeling overall."
The band has finished several new tracks for an upcoming release, which will contain more special guest appearances. The new single will be available this spring. Further details are expected to come soon.

American metal act Thy Will Be Done posted a video teaser for their upcoming EP release. The video features a sampling of new music from the forthcoming release along with live footage.
Guitarist Kurt Fraunfelter commented on the EP:
We, as a band and as individuals, went through a lot during the writing process of this EP. You can hear so many emotions and feelings throughout whether it be in the vocals, the guitar solos, or whatever. Musically, it is still very much a Thy Will Be Done release. However, I think when this new EP is played from start to finish you will definitely hear a darker and far more 'moody' vibe than throughout our entire last album. Lyrically, I can assure you there is not one word on this EP that isn't straight from [vocalist] J's heart.
The untitled EP was mixed by acclaimed metal producer Zeuss (White Chapel/Suicide Silence/Chimaira/Soulfly) at Planet Z in Hadley, MA and features six brand new studio tracks, including the track "You, The Apathy Divine."

Subliminal Poison is a female-fronted death metal band from Brazil that found a way to revamp the good old death metal in grand style. The act defines itself as "fresh borderline death metal" and I'm sure you can take that sound in the moment you push play. I recently talked with the guys from Subliminal Poison as they discussed music, aesthetics, social media, and upcoming band plans soon to be brought to a close. If you haven't heard of these guys yet, be sure they'll catch you very soon. More...

German thrash icons Destruction announced that it will embark on a North American Tour in celebration of the band's 30th Year Anniversary beginning in May with shared direct support from California thrashers Warbringer and Rhode Island's Vital Remains (who will be alternating each night) plus San Diego death metal band Pathology.
Destruction frontman/bassist Schmier commented on the tour:
A killer package for old-school thrash & death metal freaks! This may be the best set list we’ve ever had – the essence of thrash metal history united with our new anthems. We’ll have more classics than ever in the set, more from the first records for sure. Can’t wait to hit the road again!!! Some North American cities have a great audience for this old school sound again, and it wasn’t always like that. The main intention for this second North American tour within a year is that we could not play all markets that we wanted to book last time. Now, we’ll play some new places and return to those cities that gave us a great welcome last year like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Montreal. Warbringer are a perfect match to a Destruction bill. They are one of the best new thrash bands and keep our ‘80s spirit alive. It will be great to have them with us! We’ve played with Vital Remains before; awesome guys and a brutal band. They bring a good variety into the billing. Thrash/death metal is always the best mix, that’s why Pathology complete the show!
The confirmed dates for Destruction's 30th Year Anniversary Tour are:
05-04-12 Brick By Brick – San Diego, CA
05-08-12 Casselman’s – Denver, CO
