New Label Blacklight Media Signs First Band

Chris Santos - executive chef and managing partner of the New York City restaurants Vandals, The Stanton Social and Beauty & Essex - together with Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records, today announces the launch of Blacklight Media. Santos is a lifelong fan of hard rock and metal music and a longtime friend of Slagel's.

This new collaboration results in a a label focusing on hard rock and heavy metal. Blacklight Media's debut band, Good Tiger, will help launch the label while heading on tour this March.

Blacklight Media, a name created to expose talent that has been concealed and deserve the recognition of a larger audience, will work with high energy bands with a unique sound. Blacklight will release music that possesses an extensive amount of melody, mixed with heavy ebbs and flow to catch the attention of its listeners.

"Starting a label of my own is truly a dream come true," said Santos. "Music has always spoken to me in a visceral, instinctive way, and I'm hoping to curate a blend of hard rock and heavy metal that is unique in every way. Similar to my cooking, I hope the music our artists create will be engaging, well rounded, and sometimes whimsical."

Partnering with Santos in the project is metal industry heavyweight Brian Slagel, who founded Metal Blade Records in 1982. Notably, Metal Blade is credited for launching the careers of bands such as Metallica, Slayer, GWAR, Cannibal Corpse, and Amon Amarth, among others. More...

Vampires Everywhere Streaming New Song

Los Angeles outfit Vampires Everywhere is streaming new song “Ghost Inside My Head," which is taken off the "Ritual" album due out on March 18th, 2016.

“Ghost Inside My Head” is one of the most personal tracks on the record, as vocalist Michael Orlando explains, “There's always one song that defines exactly how you felt when you wrote it and this is that song for me. I had just gone through a very bad breakup with my ex fiancé and to make matters worse, my father died the same week. I had an overload of emotion. I resorted to alcohol abuse and became very destructive."

He goes on to say, "I remember recording this song with tears in my eyes praying to get through it. Once we laid down the final vocal track, I listened to it over and over again. It was the only thing that got me through my day. I am beyond thankful to get the opportunity to do what I love everyday and I'm excited for you all to hear the track.”

In support of the new album, Vampires Everywhere will kick off headlining North American run, “The Ritual Tour” this March, to be followed by a slot on the upcoming “Make America Hate Again” tour alongside Filter and Orgy. More...

Kataklysm Lead A Death Metal War In London

Perhaps one of the most popular venues among metal fans and bands in Britain, is The Underworld in Camden, North London. It's practically a given that when a small or cult band tours the UK, this is where they will play, even if it's their only UK show. As a result, even the pub located above the venue, appropriately enough called The World's End, is a very metal place, complete with it's own merchandise and all kinds of rock and metal being played over the stereo, as well as fantastic staff. The place is worth visiting for this alone, but on this night, The Underworld was hosting a death metal extravaganza which simply could not be missed, as Kataklysm arrived with Septicflesh and Aborted to perform the penultimate show of a 44 date tour.

The evening got off to an extremely heavy start as Waregem's own, Aborted took to the stage. It says a lot about this tour that all three bands are headliners in their own rights, each with a rich history and a lengthy back catalogue and Aborted certainly have the presence to be deemed headliners. All three bands brought a different brand of death metal to the show and this evening's openers were representing the brutal side of music, and representing it well. Despite going on at 6:45, Aborted instantly got the crowd moving, with plenty of head banging and mosh pits (a dangerous thing in The Underworld given the pillars on the floor,) to go around. The band mixed old material with new, performing songs from their excellent new EP, "Termination Redux," which are also scheduled to appear on their forthcoming new album, "Retrogore." This is all held together by frontman Sven de Caluwé, who possesses the charisma and showmanship that it takes to be considered one of the best live vocalists in death metal. Aborted puts on the kind of death metal performance people want to see, intense, extreme and very fun. More...

Sunday Old School: BMHM Part 3 - Dimmu Borgir

We’ve now reached the halfway mark of our month long descent into darkness that is Black Metal History Month. Though some of the subjects we've look at this month like blasphemy, suicide and murder may be extremely shocking to the uninitiated, to the black metal faithful, perhaps one of the worst things a band could do is find mainstream success. It ruined the credibility of Cradle of Filth, but how would a band from black metal’s spiritual home fare in this situation? We’re about to find out as we continue our month of madness with Dimmu Borgir.

Dimmu Borgir was founded by vocalist Shagrath, guitarist Silenoz and drummer Tjodalv, taking their name from an Icelandic volcanic formation, which translates roughly to "dark cities" in English. They soon recorded an EP entitled, "Inn i evighetens mørke del I," which sold very quickly, leading the trio to record their first full length album with new members Stian Aarstad and Brynjard Tristan, "For all Tid," which was released in 1994 through No Colours Records. The roles were reversed a little on the first album, as Silenoz performed drums and Tjodalv handled guitars, before they switched positions. More...
