Multi-platinum recording artist, producer, songwriter Kip Winger was recently presented with an honorary plaque and a historic United States of America flag by The Government of the United States.
In a surprise presentation ceremony during the taping of “Legends & Lyrics” General Harold Cross honored and praised Kip for his work on Winger lV.
The inscription on the plaque reads:
Department of Defense Seal
IN APPRECIATION OF RECORDING ARTIST
AND HIS MUSICAL COMPOSITION
"BLUE SUEDE SHOES"
HONORING THE SERVICE AND SACRIFICE
OF OUR UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES
AND THEIR FAMILIES.
OUR SINCERE THANKS,
GENERAL HAROLD CROSS
(FOUR STAR GENERAL)
The flag has historic significance as it was the last United States of America flag to fly over Forward Operating Base ,Kalso, located in Iskandaria, Iraq, 20 miles south of Baghdad. Before it was turned over to the Iraqis, FOB Kalso was the U.S. Army soldier’s broadband internet services facility in Iraq as well as a base to stop enemy activity in the Sunni Triangle.
WINGER IV’s [Shrapnel Records] concept and emphasis was on our Military and what it was like to be solider, form a soldiers perspective, leaving politics at the door. Kip had a vision to support the American troops that are standing ground in Iraq and elsewhere. “I had been doing solo shows at Military bases and in speaking with many of the soldiers, their stories touched me” explains Kip. “It was amazing to hear how far reaching our music was and how many soldiers have been moved by it, I was truly humbled by the stories”. Capturing the spirit, mood and reality from the perspective of the soldier. Songs like Right Up Ahead, M16 and Blue Suede Shoes were inspired songs seen though the eyes of a soldier at war.
The album artwork was handled by Ethan Van Sciver who wanted to put in his part for our Military – Sciver is a renowned DC Comic book artist and penciler who has contributed (among others) to Cyberfrog, New X-Men, The Flash: Iron Heights and Impulse. The “Guardian Of Freedom” album art depicts our Militaries finest protecting with guardian angels that are representative of our prayers we send.
Currently Kip is promoting his latest solo CD "From The Moon To The Sun" on MVD Audio and the soon to be released "Blackwood Creek" record. He recently completed his first orchestral piece for Ballet Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon Director of Morphoses Ballet Co. that will be used for San Francisco Ballet. The Musical world premier of Ghosts will be with The Tucson Symphony November 14th and 15th 2009. Kip and Reb Beach have also just began writing for a new WINGER release.
Orange County quintet Saosin have announced plans to headline the Hurley stage during the 2009 Vans Warped tour which kicks off in Pomona, CA on June 26th (full schedule below). This will be the fourth year the band has played the festival, the first back in 2004 before they signed to Capitol Records or recorded their critically acclaimed 2006 self-titled debut album. California fans will have a chance to see Saosin live before Warped Tour when they play the Bamboozle Left festival on April 5th in Irvine, CA. June will be a busy month for Saosin as they will also release their new studio album.
"We've always been stoked to be a part of Warped Tour and can't wait to play songs from the new record for all the kids that come out this year," said frontman Cove Reber.
Saosin have become road warriors over the last few years, touring the world relentlessly since the release of their first EP, 2003's Translating the Name. They have played 3 Vans Warped tours, 3 Rockstar Taste of Chaos tours, 2007's Projekt Revolution tour plus multiple headlining treks and supporting outings with such bands as AFI, Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance, Incubus, Taking Back Sunday, Underoath and many others. They've played gigs in Australia, Japan, Jakarta, Indonesia, Bali and Singapore. In that time, they've released 2 EP's, their debut full-length and Come Close, a live CD/DVD set.
Before heading out on tour with the Underoath last fall, Saosin partnered with global youth brand Hurley to record demos in the Hurley Costa Mesa, CA studio and allowed fans to be a part of the process through a real-time, multi-camera audio/video feed streamed on hurley.com. The band laid down 18 tracks during the self-produced Hurley sessions. Three of the new songs plus acoustic versions of an older track were made available on The Grey EP which was sold during the Underoath tour and exclusively at hurley.com. In January, the band teamed up with producer Butch Walker (Sevendust, Fall Out Boy, Pink) to finish the album in a studio in Malibu, CA and once again, opened the sessions to fans with Hurley through real-time streams on hurley.com. The final album which fans have been eagerly awaiting is expected to be released in June.

VOLBEAT unleashes their second U.S. album, "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood," March 17th on Mascot Records U.S.A. This new rock-a-billy metal masterpiece arrives on the tail end of their successful 2008 release "Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil." They will support this release with a month long tour with multi-platinum Finnish band Nightwish in May 2009. Tour dates are listed below.
The title "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood" refers to a story that connects seven of the thirteen (official) songs on the album: "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood," "Find That Soul," "Maybellene I Hofteholder," "Still Counting," "Back To Prom," "Light A Way and A Broken Man And The Dawn." It's a tale about a travelling band whose leader is a man that once got shot in the desert and left for dead. During the band's tour he went on a mission to find the mysterious killer that put seven bullets in his body. While travelling from city to city the band ends up in a small town called Ten House City performing for just a handful of people in the local bar. The songs offer observations of the people in the rundown venue, made by the bandleader. This storyline will continue to be a connecting theme and developed as VOLBEAT writes future albums.
Here are the latest Volbeat tour dates in support of Nightwish: More...

Cryogen released their new EP, "Psalms of Deceit," online as a "pay what you want" download this Tuesday, February 17th. You can download the EP through CRYOGEN’s online music store.
Cryogen comments: “We’re leaving it up to our fans to decide what the album is worth.”
The band states more formally:
"The main distribution method of this EP will be through our website, http://www.cryogenband.com/music. We are offering our fans the opportunity to pay what they want for our new EP. That includes paying nothing. We’re leaving that decision up to each individual, and we’re happy to be the first extreme metal band to do that.
"We feel that this is the future of music distribution and that there is no better time to do this than right now. While record labels sit in fear of losing sales to piracy, we believe it’s up to independent bands, like CRYOGEN, to help pave a new way of distributing music.
"We hope you enjoy the music,
German metal band Rough Silk is planning to reunite for their 20th band anniversary and release a new album. The new line-up and album will start a new era for the band, hence their choice of names for the new album: "A New Beginning." Additionally, all Rough Silk albums will be re-released this summer, remixed and remastered and featuring bonus tracks.
You can check out the new era and listen to tracks like the straight forward "Reborn To Wait" and the heavy but melodic "Temple Of Evil" on the band's Myspace player.
