Interview

Sicocis Discusses "Requiem Of The World"

There's only a week left to go before Nevada metal outfit Sicocis officially drops new album "Requiem of the World" via M-Theory Audio.

As we get ever closer to that February 24th release date, the group - which previously won the title of best local metal band from Vegas Rocks magazine - got in touch with Metalunderground to discuss the impending studio offering and what's been going on with local Las Vegas venues.

Check out the full interview with Ernie, Rafael, Travis, and Rob below, along with streams of a few select tracks from "Requiem of the World."

xFiruath: How long has the band been together and what was Sicocis up to prior to the recording of “Requiem Of The World?”

Rafael: There have been many incarnations of the band from the garage band days to the new lineup that is today. The main journey began back in 2008 when we were at a Dark Tranquillity / Firewind show here in Las Vegas out off all places for a tour to stop by. We met our previous bassist at the show and quickly formed a band that represented that kind of music on that tour. A kind of band with the sound heavily influenced by European bands or American bands that strictly tour in European markets. Prior to the recordings we’ve just been getting out there playing with who we can where we can and we’ve been blessed to know some incredible promoters and music lovers in town that helped us share the stage with many amazing acts that helped build our reputation. It’s been a whirlwind of a ride getting to where we are now.

xFiruath: Is there a particular story behind the band name?

Rob: A long time ago (in a galaxy far away) I was messing around with different band name ideas on paper. I thought it would be clever to create a Palindrome that represented the idea of escape, and something that represents a circular connection, much like Yin and Yang, which inspired the symbol design (you can find each letter of SicociS in it as well).

Dystopia Announces "Chaos Philosophorum"

Dutch black metal outfit Dystopia will unleash second full-length album, "Chaos Philosophorum," on April 21st. The album was recorded at Studio Helvete in Den Helder, mixed by Thomas Cochrane of TC Music, and finally mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

The artwork for the follow-up to 2013's "Haat" was designed by Adam Burke from Nightjar Illustration and can be seen below. Dystopia frontman Dennis Onsia commented:

"After years of growing and maturing towards our own sound, 'Chaos Philosophorum' feels like the first serious step in our own direction. This album represents us one hundred percent, both musically and emotionally. It includes influences from a lot of diverse musical genres, but I feel that we succeeded in making this album both original and organic."

Themes on 'Chaos Philosophorum' deal with space, existence and death. Onsia goes on to say, "We wanted to combine these concepts in our artwork, so we took the medieval plague doctor as a strong and recognizable symbol of death, and combined it with the almost magical shapes and colors of a galaxy. As if he is casting a spell. The artist Adam Burke did a tremendous job converting our ideas into this artwork." More...

Demon Hunter Releases New Video

Demon Hunter just premiered a video for "Died In My Sleep," taken from the band's eighth album "Outlive," which drops March 31st through a partnership with Solid State Records.

"The video treatment for 'Died In My Sleep' was more about an overall vibe than a specific story," singer Ryan Clark told Loudwire. "The goal was to strip the concept back to strictly performance, but still deliver something visually interesting. Instead of opting for the typical desaturated tones that have become synonymous with metal videos, we pulled inspiration from the vibrant colors found in many of our favorite videos and photographs from the '90s — namely Nirvana’s video for 'Heart-Shaped Box' and the album cover for Alice In Chains’ 'Facelift.'"

Clark continued, "With sleep being a running theme, we wanted to create a world that seemed unordinary — almost like a computer glitch-laden subconscious. We worked with Belief Agency to built a forest set on an indoor sound stage, and used projectors to cast colors and textures against the background and on the band members. It was a lot of fun to set up and just experiment with these layers." More...

"Such diverse background and wide source of influences really played a major part in sculpting 100 Years eclectic sound. Native Construct Releases Instrumental Album

Boston, MA based progressive act Native Construct just launched an instrumental version of debut release, "Quiet World" (originally reviewed here).

The instrumental tracks, as was the case with the original release, were mixed by Rich Mouser at The Mouse House Studio and mastered by Jamie King at The Basement Recording in North Carolina. Listen to the album now via your favorite streaming or download service here. Guitarist Myles Yang comments:

"One of the hallmarks of 'Quiet World' is the extreme density of the arrangements. The album is saturated with important, but oftentimes subtle layers and Easter eggs. Every time I've happened to hear this music with the vocals muted, I've been struck by just how much is going on under there that I had stopped paying attention to.

"Without the vocals as the main focal point, you really start to notice all those countless details. It's a totally fresh and very interesting perspective on this music. We just had to put it out there for all our hardcore fans. On top of that, we're pleased to be able to include the 8th track, 'Silence,' on this release. This was originally a bonus track available only on the Japanese version of 'Quiet World', but it really is an essential component of the concept. glhf."

Native Construct is currently in the midst of writing a sophomore album for Metal Blade Records with an expected release date for the second half of 2017. More...

Venom Inc Signs With Nuclear Blast Records

In mid-2015, former Venom member Tony "Demolition Man" Dolan, together with original members Jeff "Mantas" Dunn and Tony "Abaddon" Bray, formed a second incarnation of Britain's seminal black metal band. After coming together under the flag Venom Inc, history began to write itself once again. Now, after proving their lasting prowess on the road and at festivals internationally throughout the past year, the band is pleased to announce the signing to premier international heavy metal label Nuclear Blast Records' roster. The band is scheduled to release a new album this year - more details coming soon!

Nuclear Blast A&R Manager Jaap Wagemaker states, "Nuclear Blast is very stoked to welcome Mantas, Abaddon and the Demolition Man as new members of the Nuclear Family! We grew up with the first three albums that Mantas and Abaddon recorded and made them legendary, and that led the foundations to black metal! I've also been a big fan of Atomkraft with the Demolition Man as well! I've already had the pleasure of working with Mantas and Abaddon early 90's when there was a tribute released, In The Name Of Satan, and when they did the reunion show at Dynamo Open Air! A couple of years ago I saw them perform with Venom Inc - their first ever concert at Keep it True and ever since then the band have proven to be road warriors and have played around the globe answering to the calls of their legions!

"This year I received the first demos and they proved that they are still built of iron and steel and that they have returned at full force! The band is ready to write another chapter to their legendary status! It is with great pride that we welcome Venom Inc to Nuclear Blast!" More...

Spanish metal pioneers Excalibur (formed back in 1984) has just signed a deal with Fighter Records for the release of the third full length studio album (and first since 1996) entitled "Humo Negro" ("Black Smoke") which will be released this coming spring.

After a couple of demos in '84 & '87, Excalibur released the debut album "Generación Maldita" (Damned Generation) in '88, which only 100 copies were saved from destruction making it one of the most sought-after treasures of Spanish metal.

Now in 2017, the band finished "Humo Negro," which represents the purest and most traditional Spanish metal to be distributed both nationally and internationally via Fighter Records.

Hate Unbound Issues "I, Martyr" Video Clip

Hate Unbound's critically acclaimed debut album "Plague" drops today via Inverse Records. The band celebrates in gloomy fashion with a new music video for the song "I, Martyr," which is available in the player below.

Daryl Mitchell comments: "For the 'I, Martyr' video, we went with an abstract idea. One that implies that a persecuted person, a potential martyr if you will, had fought back against their oppressor and won. Now she is dragging her victim's bodies in order release their souls. Showing the struggles she has from carrying the guilt and then bleeding out and dying. We tried to not get to deep into the specifics in hopes that people would form their own opinion of how and why things happen the way they do. We hope you enjoy it."

The track listing for "Plague" is:

1. Baptized in Lies
2. Cut
3. Suffering
4. Burn Your Idols
5. Soiled
6. Puncture
7. Plague
8. I, Martyr

Labryinth Returns With "Architecture Of A God"

Frontiers Music Srl is particularly pleased to announce that after a seven year hiatus, Labyrinth, the legendary Italian metal band, will return with a brand new studio album, "Architecture of a God" on April 21, 2017.

In the spring of 2016, the band's founding members, Andrea Cantarelli and Olaf Thorsen received a call from Frontiers asking them to discuss with vocalist Roberto Tiranti the possibilities of a reunion with a return to their classic sound to mount a comeback for the band. After much discussion, the guys agreed to make an album and also to make a very special appearance at the the first annual Frontiers Metal Festival, where they performed their signature album, "Return to Heaven Denied" in it's entirety [Said performance is being prepared for a future home video release].

Olaf says: "This has been easily the most difficult and challenging album I ever worked on. To be honest, when Frontiers contacted me, insisting to make this reunion happen, I was skeptical and worried. We couldn't simply make a new album, it wouldn't have been honest to the fans, to ourselves. Of course, this is as easy to say as also unbelievably tough to make real: we have so many good albums out there, looking at us from their past and which people still keep in their minds and hearts. That's why we decided to strengthen our line-up, joining with nobody else but the best musicians we believed they would have fitted perfectly into our perspective of the music we were about to write."

Andrea adds: "The making of this album has been a fantastic journey. We brought back a lot of classic elements of our music, mixing it with something new and I'm so enthusiastic about the final result."

Roberto Tiranti makes it short: "Just when you thought you already gave everything you could, expressing every possible musical aspect of your way of intending music for a band like Labyrinth, then comes 'Architecture of a God,' to remind you that nothing is impossible!"

With a new line-up rounded out by drummer extraordinaire John Macaluso (TNT, Riot, Ark etc.), Oleg Smirnoff (Vision Divine, Edritch) on keyboards, and Nik Mazzucconi on bass, Labÿrinth are truly coming back stronger than ever and have offered up a superb self-produced album. "Architecture of a God" (mixed by DGM's Simone Mularoni) is a record that encompasses all the elements the band is known for: fast power metal songs with unforgettable hooks, epic prog infused metal songs, and some great melodic numbers that compose a record which is easily going to be another milestone for the Italian metal masters!

"What we have in our hands, now, it's "Architecture of a God": by far, the most mature and complete album we ever wrote," concludes Thorsen. "There's no will to challenge our glorious past, but I'm really confident that, once released, this album will set a new standard for our music!"

The track listing for "Architecture of a God" is:

1. Bullets
2. Still Alive
3. Take On My Legacy
4. A New Dream
5. Someone Says
6. Random Logic
7. Architecture of a God

9. Those Days
