At The Gates Inspires Generations of Austinites

In Central Texas, the weekend that fell on Friday, February 12th through the 14th was filled with great shows featuring major European extreme metal bands, bands that rarely appear in North America. First, I caught Cradle of Filth (visit link) put on a spectacular show at the Aztec Theater in San Antonio. Two days later, the immortal At The Gates made it’s first ever appearance in Austin.

The forerunners of melodic death previously toured North America in 2008 with Darkest Hour and Municipal Waste. Then, they played San Antonio. Due to a publicist error, I couldn’t get into that show, so I partook in other debaucheries. I did, however, catch At The Gates tour twenty-years ago with Morbid Angel and Dissection as the opener. (Readers may have seen them on 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise or Maryland Death Fest).

I didn’t know anything about them. I was there to see Dissection (the only time I caught the band), but liked what I heard and shortly after became a fan of Gothenburg bands. Twenty years later and I can sing all the songs, pump my fest and bang my head with the rest of the packed club at the Mohawk’s punk/metal-friendly club. More...

Novembre Posts "Umana" Lyric Video

Novembre, Italy's atmospheric death/doom metal purveyor, has released the first track "Umana" from its new album "URSA," due to be released on April 1st via Peaceville. View the "Umana" lyric video below.

Founding member and writer Carmelo Orlando commented on the track: "'Umana' (Italian for 'humane') is quite an old track, maybe eight years old, but it somehow managed to remain fresh. It's the first step into our new era, where songs got rid of useless frills and soar up above more easily. Also, lyrically, we expanded into new territories, a no man's land where philosophy, sociology and psychology meet. We let a giant like philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti speak for us."

"URSA" is available to pre-order on CD and LP from the Peaceville webstore at this location. Pre-orders also come with a bonus free three track EP "Annoluce," plus two exclusive tracks.

Novembre's seventh album "URSA" was recorded at Blue Noise Studio and PlayRec studio by Massimiliano Pagliuso, then mixed and mastered at Unisound Studios by Dan Swanö (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath). Cover art comes courtesy of Travis Smith.

After a period of inactivity since 2007's The Blue, which involved the departure of longstanding member Giuseppe Orlando, Novembre returns with a new set of potent and poignant tracks, effortlessly transitioning between soothing, epic, melancholy and intense, from what is one of the originators of the whole atmospheric death/doom scene. Headed by founding member and writer Carmelo Orlando, and with a reinvigorated musical alliance with Massimiliano Pagliuso, the line-up is completed by Fabio Fraschini (previously bassist on the Materia album) and David Folchitto on drums. There is also a special guest appearance from Anders Nyström of the Swedish doom master Katatonia, adding his own unique 'cold' touch to the album's single track "Annoluce."

Added Carmelo Orlando: "This album is a very important step in my life. It got me closer to what some may call 'maturity.' I've been able to delve even deeper into the chasm of the subconscious and unearth gems I didn't think existed. Lyrically and conceptually I explored new shores. I moved my ever-inwards headlights, and for the first time I dared to point them outwards, against the squalor of this Orwellian apocalypse we're committing towards the Earth and its sons, on a daily basis, in quasi-total indifference."

The track listing for "URSA" is:

1. Australis
2. The Rose
3. Umana
4. Easter
6. Oceans of Afternoons
7. Annoluce
8. Agathae
9. Bremen
10. Fin

Van Canto Premieres "The Bardcall"

In 2006, Van Canto surprised the world of metal with a revolutionary idea: to perform metal music with vocals and drums only. Nine years later, after five top 20 releases in Germany, sold out headlining tours throughout Europe and festival performances taking the band from Wacken to Australia, Van Canto now mark a new chapter in the story of “metal a cappella”: Vocal Metal Musical.

“Vocal Metal Music further develops what we stand for as Van Canto. Not only can our voices sing and imitate guitars but they are also able to tell stories. It has been six years that we’ve been working on this concept – and now we’re finally able to share it with the world," says founding band member Stef.

March 11th will see the release of the brand new Van Canto album “Voices Of Fire” on earMUSIC. For this release, the band has teamed up with German bestseller author Christoph Hardebusch (“Die Trolle” – engl. “The Trolls”) who is going to release his new fantasy novel “Feuerstimmen” on March 17th, 2016 on Piper Verlag. Pre-order the album at this location.

“We are barely able to tell what came first: the music as part of the novel or the novel as part of our album. Christoph Hardebusch and we worked hand in hand on this. Our compositions did influence the novel and vice versa. Simply put, we created our own world – a world full of competing kingdoms, epic battles, dragons, fire and bards. Not always deadly serious but full of adventures to set your imagination running wild… like Van Canto does,” explains lead singer Sly who developed the plot of the novel together with Christoph Hardebusch.

"On the one hand working closely with Van Canto was a lot of fun but on the other hand it was also very demanding,” adds author Christoph Hardebusch. “The great picture can only be achieved when creative minds interact with each other; the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Right from the start, story and music has been a unit which has influenced and fueled each other."

The cover artwork for “Voices Of Fire” as well as its various illustrations were created by fantasy artist Osmar Arroyo from South America. “For this album, we wanted people to actually see the most important scenes. Omar is a great artist who understands our vision,” Ross, responsible for the guitar vocals, adds.

The track list for the album is:

1. Prologue
2. Clashings on Armour Plates (see lyric video here)
3. Dragonwake
4. Time and Time Again
5. All My Life
6. Battleday's Dawn
7. Firevows (Join the Journey)
8. The Oracle
9. The Betrayal
10. We Are One
11. The Bardcall
12. To Catharsis
13. Epilogue

Today, Van Canto has teamed up with Metal Underground.com to premiere the new music video for the track "The Bardcall." The video features Lord of the Rings actor John Rhys-Davies. Check it out here: More...

Withem Signs With Frontiers Music Srl

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the signing of Norwegian progressive metal band Withem for the release of the band’s sophomore album, "The Unforgiving Road."

Inspired by the likes of Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Dream Theater, and Circus Maximus among others, Withem started in 2011 when Øyvind Voldmo Larsen (guitars) and Ketil Ronold (keyboards) met the gifted drummer Frank Nordeng Røe. Soon they were joined by the voice talent Ole Aleksander Wagenius. While on the debut album bass duties were taken care of by the special guest Andreas Blomqvist from Seventh Wonder, now the band has Portugal-born Miguel Pereira fully integrated as the bassist in their lineup.

Withem’s music incorporates elements of progressive metal, symphonic metal and straightforward heavy metal. Creative virtuoso musicians, together with the unique vocal abilities of Ole Aleksander Wagenius, give the band a much-needed distinctive touch to stand out in the progressive metal scene.

The band states: "We were overwhelmed with the reviews and reactions we received worldwide on our first album, and we couldn’t wait for the next Withem chapter to take place. We pretty much set a goal for a follow-up soon after ProgPower USA 2014. Soon after we started the writing process, and entered the studio in January 2015 to pursue that 'difficult second album.' We are extremely happy that we could join forces with Frontiers Music Srl and 'The Unforgiving Road' will hopefully leave our listeners with a smile on their faces. We tried to stick to our guns when it comes to keeping a strong melodic approach to each song, while taking advantage of the unique abilities of every instrument. Overall we feel that the sound and production has evolved into an even more mature and modern landscape and we can’t wait to share 'The Unforgiving Road' with our friends and fans!"

More details including release date and shows will be revealed in the weeks ahead. More...

Infernal Outcry Releasing New EP

Infernal Outcry today releases a fiery taste of new music - a bombastic single called "Eclipsed," ripped straight from the heart of the "Mass Extinction Requiem I" EP due for release on March 18th.

For the uninitiated, Infernal Outcry is a technical and progressive extreme metal band based in Hobart, Tasmania. Punishing drums, maliciously methodical guitars, and deathly screams all play their part in luring the listener into a diverse musical landscape of weighty, multi-textured, and brooding compositions.

"Mass Extinction Requiem I" was produced by a legend of the Australian Metal scene, Joe Haley (Psycroptic). Vocalist Liana Eriksen also comments:

“One of the main themes I am interested in exploring is the emotional conflict arising from the awareness of our mortality, particularly in relation to the unsustainable and artificial nature of our global civilisation and its negative impacts on the natural world. The lyrics are an expression of the darker emotions that are experienced by humanity and attempt to provide the listener and creator with a form of catharsis by aiming to develop a deeper understanding of the world around us.” More...
