Avenged Sevenfold Enters The Studio

Avenged Sevenfold has issued the following update about entering the recording studio with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater:

"I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy's all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities.

"Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."

Avenged Sevenfold drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan passed away late last year, found dead in his home on December 28, 2009.

Mutiny Within Posts Second Webisode Online

Since signing to Roadrunner Records in the summer of 2008, New Jersey-based melodic metal sextet Mutiny Within have begun their quest to potential stardom.

Solidifying their line-up with two imports from the UK, the band has tweaked their songwriting, tightened their live show, and gone into the studio to lay down the tracks that on February 23rd, 2010 will be known to the masses as their self-titled debut.

The band soon embarked on their first ever US tour, and it's all been uphill from there. Just finishing a stint supporting Arch Enemy, getting ready for another behind Sonata Arctica, this hard-working band is still growing, learning and aiming high for their goals.

To document their feats along the way, they brought an esteemed videographer along for the ride. Check out part 2 of their journey so far, and stay tuned every Wednesday for the next chapter.

Ritual Issues Band Update

California black metallers Ritual have issued the following update about delaying the release of new material due to a label dispute:

"Some of you have been asking what is the status of the new record so here it is. A so-called kvlt European label had wanted to reissue an old release and possible new stuff but due to whining and general lagging I've been forced to put things on hold once again. The general pussy attitude of underground labels is disgusting as an artist who gave one year of his freedom to fight the War On Christianity that seems to only exist in lyrical content.

"Self release is not an option as I won't work 8 hours a day for a slaves salary. If the word slave bothers you, fuck off I'm not John Mayer and you wont get an apology from me. Till then nothing will happen."

In a July 2009 interview with Metalunderground, Ritual bassist Robert Nusslein discussed his year long incarceration due to his involvement in vandalizing a church.

Templestowe Calls It A Day

Australia's Templestowe has issued the following update about breaking up after their final show on February 26th:

"As of our February 26th Canberra show at The Basement with Melbourne’s Humonic, we have decided that Templestowe will cease to exist as a band. The decision may come as a shock to some after having recently released an album and ventured out on a slew of successful interstate shows, but it is one that we feel necessary on a personal as well as musical level.

"The past several years have been an incredibly journey for the band, one which would have never been possible without the help of a great many around us who believed in the band. We’d especially like to thank: Scott Carter @ Dark Corpse Studios, Jamie @ JHDS, Matt and Nat @ AAHM, Andy, Grant, Dutch, Benny and of course all of you who came to our shows and supported us through the years.

"So, with that out of the way – come check out the final Templestowe show ever at the Basement Canberra on the 26th of February 2010. 18+ $10 at the door. We promise you a very special show with some nice surprises. We’ll also be selling our merch really cheap - $10 CDs and t-shirts as well as free EPs and posters. Thanks once again."

KSE To Continue Touring w/ Phil Labonte On Vocals

Last week, it was announced that Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones had to unexpectedly leave the band’s current headlining tour, leading to a flurry of rumors and questions about the status of the tour and the band. The band has further issued the following statement addressing the matter, saying: “It became overwhelmingly obvious to all of us around Howard that he is in no condition to be on tour right now and that he needed to get off the road and get himself better. It’s a personal matter and while we understand everyone’s curiosity and concern for Howard and the band, we appreciate everyone respecting Howard’s privacy at this time.”

Longtime friend Phil Labonte of All That Remains was able to fill in and help out the band for a few shows and it appears as though he will be filling in for the remainder of the tour, which runs through March. Killswitch Engage endured and survived a similar situation in the past, where guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz was forced to sit out a tour due to a back injury. Killswitch Engage also said, “We seriously considered cancelling the tour since we don’t want to give fans that paid good money anything less than KsE at full-strength. But after trying a few shows with Phil, and after feeling the love and support that we were getting from the crowd, it became increasingly apparent to us that the shows came across as fun and unique, and the fans seemed to be enjoying it. We quickly realized that we had to keep going and that we couldn’t possibly stop.” Refunds are available for any fans that have already purchased tickets, but as the band said, this tour will offer a chance to experience Killswitch Engage in a unique way that you won’t be able to witness again.

Furthermore, the band would like to thank all fans who came out to support them during this difficult stretch, exclaiming “We really do feel that our fans are the best fans in the world.” The band also thanked Labonte for pitching in, saying “We can’t thank Phil enough for helping us out when we needed it the most.”

For a taste of Killswitch Engage with Labonte on vocals, check this footage from the Baltimore show this past weekend, check out the video below. (Note: This footage can be viewed in full 720 HD resolution on YouTube by simply locating the “360p” under the video in the tool bar, clicking on it and then moving your cursor up to select “720p.”)

Aeon Finishes Recording New Album

Sweden's Aeon has issued the following update about finishing the recording for a new album:

"We are happy to say that we are now finished with our new album 'Path of Fire.' The album was recorded at the Empire Studio in Östersund / Sweden in September 2009. Mixed at Mana Studio / S:t Petersburg, FL, USA by Erik Rutan in October 2009 (and some minor changes where made in January 2010). Mastering was done by Alan Douches for West West Side Music. All artwork and layout made by Daniel Dlimi.

"Path of Fire is probably the most intense Aeon album up to date. And with a production that sounds more organic and 'classic deathmetal' sounding rather then the nowadays typical 'supermodern, compressed right-the-fuck-out of dynamics, loudness war' production…. you are all in for a real treat. Folks…. this IS death metal!

"Needless to say, we are really happy with how the album turned out and and we can’t wait for you to get a chance to listen to it. The album will be released later this year by Metal Blade Records. More album details and release dates will be announced later on so keep your eyes open."

The Binary Code Issues Tour Recap

New Jersey death metal band The Binary Code has posted part one of a tour recap of their first national tour with Revocation & Hypno5e on MySpace. Read an except below:

"So, we just returned home from our first National United States tour w/ Revocation & Hypno5e! We had our final show Sunday night in Allston (Boston), MA @ Unit 11 w/ Sexcrement & Tone Locs' (Anthony of Revocation) band Living Void. I just wanted to point out that the Unit 11 show was by far one of the best & most fun shows this band has EVER played in 6 years. I think the country's music scene could learn a thing or two from the scene in Allston, MA."

"As you all know, we started our first date in Brooklyn, NY. That show was an unbelievable kick off to a fun tour. Morale was up, the fun was in our eyes, and we were off to tour the country. After playing an awesome show at the Croc Rock in Allentown, PA, we decided to take a part of the drive that night after the show to head towards the next venue in Buffalo, NY. We stopped about 2 hours in (being we were exhausted beyond belief), and hung out in the van at a hotel parking lot until 6am or so. Brett & Todd drank 40s, we all laughed, farted, pissed in cups, listened to Howard Stern, and had a good time."

"That morning, we woke up shortly after our 2 hour siesta to continue our trek towards Buffalo, NY. Weather conditions were moderate: slushy snow substances matted the floors of the roads, light flakes of snow softly dabbed the land; the roads were pretty clear. Cruising a solid 55MPH on a two lane highway road alongside a slope entertaining a frozen river, we neared a bend that forewarned the beginning of a long day." More...
