Pit Stories: Don't Be A Dick!

It's Pit Story time yet again metal heads!

Following previous tales of cement in the gas tank and an epic half-mast salute to Behemoth at Bloodstock, this week we've got a story from U.S. band Giant of the Mountain.

This one has a simple moral: don't be a dick at shows! Giant Of The Mountain tells the story like this:

You see a lot of interesting things when you’re out on the road and one of those crazy things that topped the charts for us happened at a show in Santa Cruz, CA. It was a packed venue and all the bands had been amazing that night. By the time the last band went on, their front man was pretty toasty, and not in the happy fun way. He spent a good amount of time complaining and bitching at a sound guy that was doing everything he could to make it a good night for everyone.

Then it got to the point where the front man walked off stage in the middle of their set only to have his girl talk him back into getting on stage and performing. By this time the venue had emptied out a little bit, but there were a few people who hung around. During one of their songs, their scrawny singer decides to grab his water bottle and squirt the entire thing all over this huge dude who clearly lived at the gym. Much to everyone’s delight, he was promptly yanked off stage and punched in the face a few good times.

The entire venue went completely quiet except for the vocalist moaning and bleeding from his now broken nose while his girl freaked out. It was super hilarious and well deserved at that point. I almost started a slow clap, but I was a visitor and the rest of the night had been great, so I decided to be respectful. Moral of the story: Don’t be a dick.

The Dallas, Texas group Giant Of The Mountain is now working on a new release to follow 2014's "Moon Worship." The band will also be hitting the road for an east coast tour this coming April, with date and venue info available at Facebook here. While waiting for new material, check out a song off "Moon Worship" below. More...

Die Young Signs With Good Fight

From Houston, Texas, Die Young administers a Slayerized brand of hardcore in the tradition of Integrity, Ringworm, All Out War, and Earth Crisis.

Thrash metal intensity and hardcore values unite as vegan straightedge frontman Daniel Albaugh bears his soul on topics ranging from animal rights to the philosophies of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

Die Young was founded in 2002, put to rest in 2009, and rebooted in 2013. In that time the band has toured the world with a vengeance – the U.S. (including Alaska), Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central America, South America, Europe, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, and beyond – and has shared stages with a massive list of bands from Cro-Mags, to Catharsis, to Modern Life Is War. The band has released a slew of recordings on such labels as Eulogy and A389.

Good Fight Music will release new album "No Illusions" in 2016. Recording begins in March with producer Craig Douglas (Bitter End, Venomous Maximus) at Origin Sound.

Albaugh describes the album as "a fun ride through various realms of human disappointment, irrationality, violence, nihilism and pessimism." Stay tuned for more info.

White Zombie Re-Releasing Earliest Material

Years before Beavis and Butt-head headbanged "Thunder Kiss '65" and "More Human than Human" into the eternal rock video canon, there was primordial White Zombie - a quintessential, diabolically loud byproduct of Manhattan's underground rock scene, born of art-school rendezvous and squalid apartment circumstance.

On June 3rd, 2016, Numero resurrects White Zombie's eternally out-of-print early EPs and LPs as "It Came From N.Y.C." This set is the most exhaustive attempt so far to document the band's wondrously ugly birth. Get reintroduced to White Zombie as New York noise-rock, a grotesque creation that clawed and threatened its way to crossover metal glory.

Spread across five LPs or three compact discs, all 39 tracks have been remastered by White Zombie guitarist J. Yuenger and packaged alongside the original lurid artwork. The accompanying 108-page book painstakingly documents White Zombie's punishing progression through scores of unpublished photos, period discography, a T-shirtography, and tales from the terrifying early years that stitch together the sordid story of a band whose true power eclipsed its mainstream heyday. Full details and track listings are available below. More...

Full Scale Riot Signs With Eulogy

Full Scale Riot has officially joined the Eulogy Recordings family this week, with the label signing the band for an upcoming debut full-length due this September.

While no other details on the record are yet available, Full Scale Riot will return to Trax East where the band recorded the "Depopulation" EP. Eulogy Recordings comments:

"Full Scale Riot is a Northern New Jersey/New York City-area hardcore quintet founded by Tim McMurtrie, former original guitarist of the legendary band M.O.D. FSR was formed back in 2006 by guitarist McMurtrie and singer BJ Allen right when Tim was fresh from disbanding another one of his popular local rock and rap bands, Rhythm Trip.

"When Tim and BJ met through a mutual friend, they formed an instant musical bond and the initial concept for the band was born. Through the years, the two stayed in touch and with the current state of our nation's politics and world issues decided that it would be a good time to bring Full Scale Riot back. This time it's all about aggression and getting back to the roots. The lineup consists of Allen on vocals, McMurtrie on guitar, Jeff F'N Wood (Shat, Murder League All-Star, ex-The Dillinger Escape Plan live, ex-M.O.D.) on bass, and drummer Evan Rossiter." More...

Hemotoxin Releasing "Biological Enslavement"

Hemotoxin's "Biological Enslavement" is coming out via Unspeakable Axe Records on April 15th, 2016. The label had this to say:

"Categorizing what kind of music Hemotoxin makes is harder than it would seem. Their brand of melodic death/thrash springs from a whole host of metal influences: progressive death metal (e.g. Death, Atheist), classic thrash (Megadeth, Slayer, and others), and even some black metal and prog rock.

"Any given song could groove, then thrash, then send you through a dizzying labyrinth of elaborate riffs and ideas. Somehow they juggle all these influences and produce from it a cohesive whole, while keeping the aggression high and the song's core melodic components front and center.

"Whatever they are doing, they do it very well, and they've only gotten tighter and more adventurous as a unit since their 2013 debut. Now their follow-up full-length is ready to be unleashed. At 9 tracks and just 35 succinct minutes, 'Biological Enslavement' will take you on a more interesting journey than most albums twice its length." More...

Beltfed Weapon Releasing New EP

Seattle-based metal band Beltfed Weapon has returned with a new EP, titled "Raining Plague." This six-song release - the band's first since 2009's "Peackeeper" - takes a slightly more experimental approach, incorporating clean vocals, courtesy of singer Dean Sternberg (Where Evil Follows, Ashes Of Ares, Into Eternity).

Led by founding member and guitarist Frank Hetzel, the album's stellar lineup is rounded out by bassist Steve DiGiorgio (Testament, Death, Sadus), drummer Fredrik Widigs (Marduk) and lead guitarist Andy Beech.

"After the release of 'Peacekeeper,' I decided to regroup and take a new approach," Hetzel said. "Once I had the songs structured out for 'Raining Plague,' I reached out to friends in the industry and ended up with a well-oiled machine for the recording lineup. The recording process took some time due to everyone's schedules, but I am more than pleased with how the whole thing turned out. It turned out better than I envisioned." More...

Cradle of Filth Spreads Vampire Plague

Two days in February will probably become two of the most sought after days for metal concerts in central Texas. This is because European bands invaded the Lone Star state. First, on Friday the 12th, Cradle of Filth ravaged the Aztec Theater in San Antonio. Then, At The Gates thrashed Austin. Both shows brought in a large crowd, which was partially due to their popularity but also due to the fact that Euro bands like these just don’t tour much.

My show report on At The Gates will post soon, but first let’s look at COF’s performance at the Aztec. Due to horrendous traffic, it took me 3.5 hours to drive from Georgetown, Texas to San Antonio Friday traffic is terrible and on this day I encountered 4 wrecks and traffic stalls. I guess next time I’ll need to take off around noon on Friday to see all the bands. The drive is terrible. Once I made it to the venue Butcher Babies were halfway through their set. Other than boobs on parade, I don’t give much credence to this band. They sound very cliché for the times and there is nothing that really grabs me.

Silent Line Covers One Direction

Bonnyville, AB melodic metal band Silent Line has posted a metal cover version of One Direction's hit single "Drag Me Down" because sometimes metalheads need to demonstrate their guilty pleasure for pop music. Guitarist Mike Burton comments:

"We were just looking to make a funny cover that isn't serious by any stretch of the imagination. We thought it would be hilarious to try and turn such a straightforward boy band song into our style of melodic metal.

"Some people in the band - not naming any names - are on the fence about releasing it, but I think it will get some laughs and hopefully a few new fans! Don't take it too seriously, and if you want to see what our original material sounds like check out our SoundCloud page or come see us live on March 11th for the Wacken Metal Battles in Edmonton at The Mercury Room!" Valkyrja Announces New Vocalist, Tour Dates

Swedish black metal cult Valkyrja has announced two pieces of momentous news: the full dates for a first North American tour alongside Finnish band Archgoat, and the addition of brand-new vocalist, RSDX. A statement from founding guitarist S.W. reads:

"We have worked together for over a decade. We moved in the shadows and set ablaze what is to us known as Valkyrja. A journey fed by the passion for the forbidden, towards a horizon yet unknown, a strive constantly distracted by worldly matters. A creation that exceeds any individual value.

"With grief, I hereby announce that the now-former vocalist A.L will no longer participate in Valkyrja as you know it. As his presence and our creations go beyond any outer circumstances, he will, though, always have his part. Despite that, nothing can stop the wild fire we once started. We have now prepared under the surface, and we are finally ready to reveal the news. We hereby welcome our new singer RSDX, who is willing to burn and feed the hungry flames with utter dedication!"

Following on from last full-length, "The Antagonist's Fire," Valkyrja is now prepared to spread the gospel across North America. As direct support to Archgoat, Valkyrja's first North American tour will span March and early April and spread disease through 17 cities.

S.W. continues: "With hunger, we prepare a journey to territories yet untouched. Twelve years have passed since this constellation was born, and it is now time to hit USA and Canada. These will be the first appearances of Valkyrja in 2016. Come closer - embrace the flames of perdition."
