Swedish melodic death metallers SOLAR DAWN have officially split up. A statement from the group reads as follows:
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have decided to bury SOLAR DAWN once and for all! Eight years have passed since the day we gave birth to this melodic monster and time has taken its toll, to an ever increasing extent. Somewhere along the line we somehow began losing our hearts to SOLAR DAWN and without genuine commitment, there's really no point in continuing.
"We'd like to thank everyone who has contributed, in any way, to the history of SOLAR DAWN, as well as we'd like to take off our hats to all of you who have bought our albums, showed up at the gigs, visited this site and so on! You will not be forgotten! This is where it all ends..."
SOLAR DAWN's full-length debut, "Equinoctium", was released in March 2002 via Mighty Music.

Prior to headlining the 2005 edition of Ozzfest, BLACK SABBATH will embark on a short European tour, which will include an appearance at the U.K.'s Download festival (where they will headline the "Ozzfest" day on June 11).

In the latest issue of Guitar World magazine, OZZY OSBOURNE/BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist Zakk Wylde addressed the Internet rumor that he spat booze in METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield's face when he asked to jam with Wylde.
"No, no. That's ridiculous," Wylde responded when asked if there was any truth to the rumor. "James is the shit. He is a brother and I love the guy. I just didn't think he was doing the right thing by hiring some high-price psychiatrist to work with the band after he got out of rehab.
"Here's what happened: James came on our bus and we were bullshitting. I said, 'Dude, why are you paying a psychiatrist 40 grand a month? He's raping you. Send the money to a children's cancer foundation. If I was in the band, you know what I would tell you?' And he goes 'What?' And I took a swig from my beer and spit it up in the air. And he goes 'Fuck that,' and walks off the bus. I went after him and told him I was just being a dork and that was that. I was just talking to him, being straight, because he's smarter than that. He's James Hetfield, damn it. He knows who he is and doesn't need some yahoo to tell him. It's like when Sharon Osbourne sent me to rehab a few years ago. Fuck that!"
Guitar World: What happened?
Zakk Wylde: "I just stood up and said, 'You know what? This is not for me. This is not BLACK LABEL. You guys are a bunch of losers and scamming fuckers, and I guess I'm in the wrong business. I should start the BLACK LABEL rehab and rape people 35 grand for 28 days.' The place was called Promises rehab, and I went, 'I'll make you a promise right now: I'm either going to kill someone in here or cap myself. Since suicide is not an option, someone else is going to die if I stick around.' And that was it. I jumped the fence, walked to a bar and watched the Nets and Lakers in the NBA finals."

A new book, Extreme Metal II, is due for global publication in April 2005 by Omnibus Press. The author is Joel McIver, whose best-selling 2004 opus Justice For All: The Truth About Metallica was the first book to express in depth the disappointment that thousands of metal fans feel about the band's recent music. Extreme Metal II is the successor to 2000's Extreme Metal, which was the first single-volume guide to the international thrash, black and death metal scenes. The new book has expanded the original's coverage to almost 400 of the world's most groundbreaking metal bands: its foreword was written specially by Mille Petrozza of Kreator and it includes Q&As with metal luminaries such as Dave Mustaine, Gene Hoglan, Max Cavalera and Andy Sneap.
The book also boasts over 100 new interviews with members of Aborym, Abramelin, Agathodaimon, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Anal Cunt, Annihilator, Antaeus, Anthrax, Bal-Sagoth, Bathory, The Berzerker, Cadaver Inc., Cephalic Carnage, Cirith Gorgor, Cradle Of Filth, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Decapitated, Deicide, Denial Of God, Desecration, Destroyer 666, Destruction, Diabolic, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Dimmu Borgir, Dismember, Enforsaken, Enthroned, Flotsam And Jetsam, The Gathering, Goat Of Mendes, Gorerotted, Hecate Enthroned, Hell-Born, Hirax, Imagika, In Flames, Inhume, Insision, Kataklysm, Katatonia, King Diamond, Kult Ov Azazel, Lord Belial, Malevolent Creation, Meads Of Asphodel, Melechesh, Meshuggah, Morbid Angel, Mork Gryning, Mortician, Neuraxis, Nile, Obituary, Opeth, Overkill, Possessed, Ribspreader, Satariel, Shadows Land, Slayer, Soulreaper, Strapping Young Lad, Suffocation, Suidakra, Testament, Thanatos, Thyrfing, Tsjuder, Venom, Vile, Whiplash and Zyklon.

Century Media is proud to announce that Israeli progressive metal band Orphaned Land will be appearing this September at Atlanta’s ProgPower USA VI. This will be the band’s first-ever appearance in the United States. Vocalist Kobi Farhi is thrilled to be a part of this year’s festival and sent this message to fans, “We are happy and excited to announce that we have confirmed our debut show in the U.S.A., and we are coming to bring you a storm from the ORPHANED LAND. Hurricane Ivan was nothing here comes the Flood!! See you all at ProgPower.”
"Orphaned Land was the first band I approached about playing this year’s festival,” says ProgPower USA promoter Glenn Harveston. “I have been listening to the band since their early releases starting with 1994’s Sahara, and 1996’s El Norra Allil. I can say that 2004’s Mabool was one of the year’s most original and exotic albums. I’m honored to be able to bring them to the U.S. to be part of ProgPower USA VI." The prestigious festival has previously hosted labelmates Tad Morose, Into Eternity, Mercenary, Jag Panzer and Blind Guardian.
Nine Inch Nails have confirmed the track listing for their new album, 'With Teeth'. The album is to be released in early May. The tracklisting is as follows:

Borknagar mainman Oystein G. Brun has issued the following statement regarding the group's current status:
"Dear fans and associates,
'Having created epic metal for several years now, an idea and a vision has arisen within the Borknagar camp, and we hereby want to inform you about how it will affect our forthcoming release: The next Borknagar album will be an acoustic effort based entirely on the epic and progressive aspect of the band. The recording will commence this very spring, most likely in late May, at Toproom Studio in Norway as we are planning an autumn release.
"This is something we have wanted to do for many years now, and the idea has lingered within the band ever since the recording of 'Quintessence' and a few private sessions with a grand piano and an acoustic guitar. The album will be acoustic-based but largely arranged with a wide range of instruments and vocal styles. It will be recorded by the same line-up that did 'Epic', and we will be working with different locations during the recording process in order to catch the sounds of different acoustic environments. Musically the album will be rather dissimilar from what we have done before, though the unique Borknagar sound will surly shine through.
"This is not a permanent change of the band's musical style, but rather a musical quest and a challenge for us as well as for our audience!
"The title of the album will be released soon."
The Brides Of Destruction are to work with famed producer Andy Johns on their second, as yet untitled album. This will be their first with a new line-up that includes Ginger of The Wildhearts on guitar and former Amen/Snot bassist Scott Sorry.
Long-running Dutch death/thrash metal band Thanatos are busy writing new songs for their fifth full-length album, to be recorded before the end of the year.
Thanatos' fourth album, "Undead. Unholy. Divine", was released last summer through Greece's Black Lotus Records. The follow-up to 2000's "Angelic Encounters", "Undead. Unholy. Divine" was produced by Hans Pieters and the band at Excess studios in Rotterdam, Holland and was mastered by Attie Bauw (Judas Priest, Scorpions, Gorefest).
One of the principal forces in Swedish power metal have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity of doing two shows alongside the renowned philharmonic orchestra at the opera house in their native Umeå, Sweden.
"I think these concerts will blow people away. Not only will it be cool to hear our songs being played by an award winning orchestra consisting of 50 people – our sorry asses will be up their, on stage with them, playing the material we wrote ourselves. Imagine the total and utter power that will be unleashed when our two musical worlds collide", Nils Eriksson, the band’s bassist, says.
The shows will be conducted by the prominent Hans Ek, whose merits include everything from working in Canada and England, directing the musical Chess at Cirkus in Stockholm, conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to having worked in nearly every Opera House in Sweden.
"This guy is a heavy weight champion and I am sure he will interpret our songs in ways we never even thought were possible. I can’t wait to hear this", Nils Eriksson says.
In addition to Nocturnal Rites being the headline act on the bill, two other local bands, Persuader and 6th Awakening, will also in their own shows merge with the orchestra. Furthermore in the opera house’s smaller venue an array of other local metal bands will be performing the good old fashioned way.
"As far as I know this is the first time any opera house in Sweden, or maybe even the world, has opened its doors for a weekend completely devoted to this slice of modern culture we call metal.
Culture isn’t supposed to be static. It’s meant to bend, take on new forms and be questioned. I love this idea and I think it will give the metal audience a new perspective on classical music and vice versa", Nils says.
The two day event, aptly dubbed “Demons of the Opera”, will set off on the eves of April 1st and 2nd. Tickets go on sale Monday February 14.
In other news, Nocturnal Rites have just finished shooting their third video clip off last year’s critically acclaimed “New World Messiah” and are currently working on material for its successor. Until this monster is let loose, check out “Lost in Time: The Early Years of Nocturnal Rites” – the band’s 10 year celebration CD containing their first two albums, newly recorded songs, rare bonus tracks and video enhancements. In stores on February 21st.
