Pit Stories: Puke Stains And Fried Chicken

Happy Valentine's Day metal heads! Our Pit Story this week may not have much to do with love, but it does feature dirty mattresses where very unpleasant things no doubt went down, so that's close enough, right?

Many of our tales from the pit are all about what's going on during the show, but as any touring musician will attest, there's a lot going of craziness on behind the scenes, especially with bands trying to find a place to hang their hats for the evening before hitting the next town.

This week we've got a tale from the Thera Roya crew about some less-than-pleasant accommodations in Nashville:

I'll never forget when we played in Nashville, TN on our first tour. We thought it would be warm in the winter in New Orleans so we headed south (we're idiots lol). We ended up in a blizzard in Nashville and payed this stellar show at a place called the owl farm. Unfortunately it's not around anymore. This was nearing the mid to end of the tour and all of us were fried at this point mentally. I think Ryan was even catatonic at one point hahaha.

We needed a place to crash that was warm and this guy from one of the other bands had a punk house called the Himan house. We all crammed into this disgusting room with puke stains on the rug and dirty mattresses everywhere. Some of us ran out to get some fried chicken. When we got back and feasted on gas station chicken we noticed these pictures and notes on a wall together and a name that said "Gloria."

One of the members of the house was a repo guy and when he was emptying a house he found a trunk full of pictures and diaries from this girl Gloria who had passed away and he decided to make a shrine at the Himan house. I'll never forget sleeping in Nashville with Gloria's shrine in front of me.

Thera Roya will release new album "Stone and Skin" on February 17th, 2017. A full stream is currently online at this location. More...

Produced by Kris Hilbert (The Body) and mixed and mastered by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust), "The Grave Alchemist" will see a worldwide release on April 14th. Prosthetic Records comments:

The album is a narrative-driven horror concept album that weaves a tale of alchemy, necromancy, and vampirism over the span of three centuries. It is a potent blend of violence, mysticism, psychology, and the occult, distilled into an aural elixir of Blood and Gold."

Sangue Announces Debut Album, Streams New Song

Today, Nuclear War Now! Productions announced April 15th as the international release date for Sangue's debut recording, simply titled "Sangue." The release shall be issued as a 7" vinyl EP.

Charged with the restless emanations of the ancients, the first offering from Rome’s Sangue is pure Etruscan Death, covered in the dust and debris of civilizations long forgotten. Sangue's approach harkens back to a time before there was a clear demarcation between death metal and black metal but transcends the usual combination of these genres that, by now, is often formulaic and predictable. In this way, Sangue's approach is entirely modern, reflecting a new synthesis of the band’s stylistic antecedents such that, despite the band’s clear reverence for tradition, there emerges something unique and unorthodox in the final concoction that defies simple characterization or comparison.

The band’s performance on these tracks is primal, and the songwriting is austere and acute, shorn of all surplusage, making the record more engaging and complete. The production is superb for this style, with the instruments all woven together to create a cohesive core, and the vocals hanging hauntingly in the atmosphere. Sonically and conceptually, there is an atavistic element permeating Sangue's music, evoking the rotten stench of the blood and waste of centuries past to channel sensations primitive and remote. The artwork for this EP is also notable in that it features work produced by three of the band members as well as cover art by Timo Ketola.

In the meantime, bear witness to to the first track to be revealed from Sangue, aptly titled "The Rite of Cosmic Void," in the player below. The album artwork and track list can be found below:

1. The Rite of Cosmic Void
2. Il Sudore Delle Catacombe More...

Hate Announces New Album

Polish extreme black/death metal act Hate has refined the formula and has created an album that re-establishes the band as a serious player on the scene. Please welcome "Tremendum" - out on May 5th via Napalm Records as CD Digipak and LP Gatefold.

You will re-discover the band and on a new level, as they seem to reach into different musical resources including progressive beats, ingenious song structures and a completely new sound, which is still authentically harsh and yet very powerful. Beware! The amount of fierceness on the album is beyond anything Hate has ever done before.

Check out album artwork (created by Daniel Rusilowicz) and full track listing below and read what Hate's leader Adam Buszko unveils on the album artwork: "The drawing on the cover depicts a nighthawk (Polish: lelek), a nocturnal bird that was treated with great respect by Slavic tribes in pre-Christian times. Nighthawks were believed to bring souls to this world and take them away from dying people. In that case they gathered in big numbers screeching for long hours. So they were called 'messengers of death". As this album has different Slavic references, we chose Nighthawk as a symbol that best conveys its meaning."

The material's title "Tremendum" (eeriness and the fear of the holy) refers to an archaic notion of holiness, which is both good and evil. And you will have absolutely no doubt which part of it this band represents.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Asuric Being
2. Indestructible Pillar
3. Svarog's Mountain
4. Numinosum
5. Fidelis Ad Mortem
6. Into Burning Gehenna
7. Sea of Rubble

Emil Westerdahl of Inner Wound Recordings comments: "It's a true pleasure to announce the signing of Power Quest to the label. During the past few months that Steve and I have been in contact it's become clear that we share the same vision for the band and that Power Quest and Inner Wound is a perfect fit. Sinheresy Announces New Album "Domino"

Italian symphonic melodic metal act Sinheresy will return with the sophomore full length album "Domino." The album is expected to drop on April 7th via Scarlet Records and is the follow up to the debut full length "Paint the World" (2013).

Formed in 2009, Sinheresy soon developed a unique blend of metal by adding a wider range of influences going from the symphonic sound of Nightwish and Within Temptation to the progressive approach of Symphony X and Children Of Bodom. The first works "The Spiders And The Butterfly" EP (2011) and "Paint the World" (2013) attracted very positive reactions from fans and critics alike, allowing them to tour all over Europe with renowned acts such as Lordi and Tarja.

The band now ready to come back with their brand new album "Domino." Superbly mixed to bring out warmth and depth, their new work is a treat for the ears on multiple levels. Not only is the overall sound excellent, but the solid engineering also serves to highlight the strength of Cecilia and Stefano’s vocal performances and displays the raw talents of the band to its fullest.

This is how mastering engineer Mika Jussila of legendary Finnvox Studios commented: "I keep this album as a good example of a modern metal record but don’t want to categorize any more. All tracks are produced and arranged in a very cool way and the sound is modern, punchy and powerful. Listening this you feel happy and energetic at the same time."

Complex at times and elegantly simple at others, "Domino" is a strong evolutionary step that blends new elements with old, enhancing rather than changing the band’s traditional sound. The track listing for "Domino" is:

1. Domino
2. Star Dome
3. Without A Reason
4. My Only Faith
5. Unspoken Words
6. Under Your Skin
7. The Island Of Salt And Grass
8. Ocean Of Deception

Pyriphlegethon Sets Date For Sophomore LP

Today, Iron Bonehead Productions set April 14th as the international release date for Pyriphlegethon's highly anticipated second album, "The Murky Black of Eternal Night," on vinyl LP format.

At the end of 2015, Iron Bonehead released this Dutch cult's debut album, "Night of Consecration," on vinyl and largely introduced the name Pyriphlegethon to the international underground. However, a new name it might've been, but Pyriphlegethon was actually yet another project of the insanely prolific Mories, who's widely known for Gnaw Their Tongues but also such projects as De Magia Veterum and Cloak of Altering. With "Night of Consecration," this was Mories at this most traditionally black metal, and it indeed bore his special, idiosyncratic touch.

But, with "The Murky Black of Eternal Night," Mories takes Pyriphlegethon into deeper, darker waters of spellbinding, pitch-BLACK metal. Ever aptly titled, "The Murky Black of Eternal Night" is a a spiritual and even virtual quagmire of eldritch energies, spectral and distant but equally physical in its thrust. Whereas the comparatively more martial "Night of Consecration" emitted a strangely anthemic aspect, tethered as it was to first-wave black metal, "The Murky Black of Eternal Night" wanders down different corridors, opening up unknown spaces within the still-scabrously raw Pyriphlegethon aesthetic and layering mystical synths atop more often than not. Trilateral Announces "Elliptic Orbits" Album

Multi-dimensional progressive metal act Trilateral announced the new release "Elliptic Orbits." The album drops independently on March 11th. A preview clip can be viewed in the player below.

Trilateral is a progressive metal band with influences as diverse as their music. A trinity of adept and nonconformist musicians, the band is not easily categorized into one simple genre, but that’s exactly what keeps hungry, forward-thinking metal fans interested in their unique sound. Although they integrate various fundamental elements of multiple genres and styles, Trilateral delivers neural depth without mercy to shatter audiences’ expectations of what modern prog metal is truly capable of.

With a unique blend of brutality and jazz-fusion, the band manages to create a vast soundscape within every track that is not typically associated with metal.

"Elliptic Orbits" was engineered and produced by Jacob Goose at Avalon Studios. It was mixed by Nigel Curley at Mindscape Studios and mastered by Siegfried Meier at Beach Road Studios. The logos were created by Nate Mitic of Cosmic Creative Design and the album's artwork was created by Tom Hilborn.

Shibalba Announces "Psychostasis" Album Details

Meditative dark trance/ambient/shamanic act Shibalba - featuring Acherontas V.Priest (Acherontas), Karl NE/Nachzehrer (Nåstrond) and Aldra-Al-Melekh in its ranks - has revealed details surrounding the upcoming album "Psychostasis - Death Of Khat." The opus will be released on April 30th via Agonia Records and it will include 10 new songs. The album will be available in CD, LP and digital formats along with additional merchandise. More details along with the pre-orders will be announced shortly.

"Psychostasis - Death Of Khat" was recorded by the band themselves in Greece and Sweden. The new material is deeply ritual and meditative, and was recorded in a manner in which sound vibrations have been registered in a form analogous to the way in which the human ear perceives sound. Extremely high standards were provided especially for the vinyl edition of the album. The band commented: "This is a deep meditative work, ideal for higher purposes; burning incense & listening in headphones under the moonlight are required for best experience".

Shibalba's music is saturated with the mysticism of the East. It's richly detailed and multi-dimensional, while layered with chanting and broadly defined elements of traditional ritual and shamanic music. Apart from contemporary synths and guitar drones, the band makes use of bones and skulls as percussion instruments, Tibetan horns, Tibetan singing bowls, bone & horne trumpets, darbuka's (goblet drums) as well as ceremonial bells and gongs, to name a few. The band's intention, in their own words, is to "guide the subconsious of the individual to dream beyond the skin of matter & to dream in ecstasy and exult".

Tormentor Comes To A "Morbid Realization"

German thrash metal band Tormentor will release the new album "Morbid Realization" on March 17th via Iron Shield Records, with worldwide distribution via Pure Steel Records. The album is the sophomore full length and first since 2012's "Violent World."

Tormentor was formed in 2006 by Max Seipke at the age of 12 years. Together with producer Evil (Evil Studios), the band recorded the first demo "Lesson in Aggression" in 2007, which was released in the following year. In the year 2010, the band went into the studio, once again with producer Evil, to record the debut album "Violent World." After the recording was done, new members Christian Schomber (bass) and Kevin Hauch (rhythm guitar) joined the band. Following the release they toured through Saxony, Brandenburg and Poland and established their name in the underground scene.

Over the course of 2013-2014, the band was busy writing new songs, which were recorded towards the end of 2016, resulting in "Morbid Realization." The track listing for the album is:

Perverted Ceremony Details Debut Full Length

A mere matter of months since it released its first official recording, "Demo I," Belgium's Perverted Ceremony returns with a uniquely abominable variety of black metal, hereby presenting the debut full-length album "Sabbat of Behezaël" under the very same banner of Nuclear War Now! Productions. The album shall be released internationally on April 1st on both vinyl LP and cassette tape formats.

First discovered by NWN! through the time-honored underground tradition of the band spreading self-produced cassettes to a limited number of contacts, Perverted Ceremony’s music reflects the same authenticity and dedication to the craft as original manner of clandestine distribution.

Although the band lists such revered acts as Demoncy, Mystifier, VON, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Archgoat, and Beherit, as primary influences, the sound tends to gravitate somewhat more towards the latter two (along with Barathrum), who represent the Finnish tradition of bestial black metal. That said, Perverted Ceremony’s style is not easily compartmentalized according to influences. On the contrary, with a distinctive approach to songwriting, production, and atmosphere, the band has achieved a ritualistic blend of black metal that is unique. Additionally, Perverted Ceremony has proven with this album that the work recorded on its demo, which was already impressive in its own right, was only a snapshot in the band’s development, and one which has now been superseded. Vaultwraith Signs With Hells Headbangers Records

Deep within the tenebrous bowels of a dark and decrepit castle was it that the black ritual was undertaken. Assembled there were four of the worst sinners this world has ever known, utterly profane and perverse: The Warlock, He of the Blasphemies… Alucarda Bellows, She of the Devil… Esteban Walpurgis, He of the Evil Rites… and Baron Blood, He of the Flesh & Blood. A blood-red full-moon hanging in the benighted sky, they began the unspeakable ceremony. Mercyful Fate and Bathory albums were offered unto a flaming pyre, as were the celluloid artifacts of Jess Franco and Paul Naschy. Once some esoteric incantations in Latin and Sumerian were uttered alongside the spilling of hot sacrificial blood did that loathsome quartet play the notes known but to the most impious and obscene. And it was then, at the foreboding stroke of midnight, that the shuddersome fiendish spectre did arise from out of the stygian void: the Vaultwraith!

While its ominous conception dates back to 2012, it was not actually until the untimely death of that legendary underground warlock, Jim Sadist of the infamous Nunslaughter, that Vaultwraith truly arose from the netherworld. Before his death, Sadist had been in talks of joining the Devilcraft Cult, and it was indeed those dangerous meetings that conjured the very soul of the thing, bringing infernal life to what had been, before, but a formless nightmare. Now sworn to an unwholesome and unholy pact with devils, witches, and all that is supernatural, Vaultwraith was begotten upon the summer solstice of 2016. Inspired by those masters of classic ‘80s metal such as King Diamond, Iron Maiden, and early Metallica as well as the heavier occultism of Celtic Frost and Nocturnus, it evinced an otherworldly marriage of furious heavy metal guitars, dueling monstrous extreme metal vocals, and keyboards straight out of a Hammer Horror film. The result of all this utter devilry was black hymns that not simply dripped with a palpable atmosphere of unadulterated evil but that were hauntingly melodic, as well.

The very first manifestation of Vaultwraith's malevolence came in the form of the "Wrath of the Wraith" demo in late 2016, and it was this tape that seduced obscure label Turanian Honour Productions to arrange a split 7” with, so very apropos, Nunslaughter, this to be freed from Hell sometime in 2017. But it was those maniacal overlords of underground death and black metal underworld, the one and only Hells Headbangers, who did behold the true potential of that Devilcraft Cult and offered to unleash the full-length masterpiece of aural horror, "Death Is Proof of Satan’s Power." Eleven dreadfully metaled tributes to all that is morbid and macabre, it is due to lurk forth from the shadows in 2017.

And so, as you descend down, down, down unto the accursed black heart of that very same abandoned castle, you must ask yourself: are you prepared to bear witness to the Vaultwraith?

Witness the cover and tracklisting of "Death Is Proof of Satan's Power":

1. The Vaultwraith
2. Ravaged In the Crimson Mist
3. Infernal Realms Unfold
4. Dark Desires Unleash the Legions of Lucifer
5. Night Ride Through the Black Woods
6. Manifest at Midnight
7. Devilcraft
8. Open Grave Rape
9. High Priestess of the Wolf Coven

Brother Firetribe Announces New Album "Sunbound"

Finland's Brother Firetribe - the five-strong outfit fueled by class compositions and top-of-the-line musicianship, the latter underpinned by the signature style of Nightwish guitarist, Emppu Vuorinen - will release the fourth full-length album "Sunbound" via Spinefarm Records on March 24th.

Featuring 12 new pieces of music, including lead track "Taste of a Champion," plus follow-up single/video for "Indelible Heroes," due out next month, "Sunbound" has been mixed by Finnish studio-meister Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Children Of Bodom, Stratovarius), and is the follow-up to 2014's "Diamond In The Firepit."

Since first coming together for the "False Metal" debut back in 2006, Brother Firetribe has flown the flag for a brand of music ("ultra-melodic West Coast AOR") that once strode the U.S. radio airwaves like a colossus, filling up arenas and providing the silky soundtrack to poolside summers and wind-in-the-hair coastal highway drives; music pioneered by some of rock music's most legendary names...

However, Brother Firetribe - that's vocalist Pekka Ansio Heino, keyboard player Tomppa Nikulainen, bassist Jason Flinck, drummer Hannes Pirila, plus Vuorinen himself - is not trying to hitch a DeLorean ride into the past; rather, their collective aim is to both celebrate and reinvigorate a musical style that is all about big hooks, strong melodies, soaring vocals and searing guitars, not to mention the desire to entertain on a grand and glorious scale. Inferno Streams New Song

Czech Republic black metal act Inferno is streaming the new song "The Innermost Disillusion" over at Decibel at this location (also in the player below). The song will appear on the band's upcoming new album "Gnosis Kardias (Of Transcension and Involution)," which is set for international release on April 4th via W.T.C. Productions.

"Gnosis Kardias (Of Transcension and Involution)" picks up the threads of the crucial previous recording "Omniabsence Filled by His Greatness," presenting five new songs and one which concludes and opens the album at the same time. The band made a single step backwards to evaluate and explore the essence responsible for the previous opus in order to create an even stronger and more refined album.

Musically, one can expect a natural fusion of genuine black metal and deeply-felt psychedelia. The new songs further explore the pathways presented by "Omniabsence Filled by His Greatness," but there are compositions and ideas which could not have been heard before. The scorching aggression and mesmeric calm, darkness and light, straightforwardness and progressive tendencies - all are merged into a single magical whole. Lyrics and music will open many spiritual paths, some leading towards damnation, and others that lead to the long-desired dissolution in the absolute. But some also offer a glimpse into the core of the eternal tragedy, the breaking on the wheel of existence and rebirth, to which all who refuse to open their hearts are condemned.

The track listing for the album is:

1. The Innermost Disillusion
2. Abysmal Cacophony
3. Upheaval of Silence
4. O > 1 (Oscillation in Timelessness)
5. Gate-eye of Fractal Spiral
6. Orison for the Baneful Serpent

Grammys Update On Mic Fail & House Band Mishap

TMZ reports that a stagehand who unplugged a wire under the stage by accident was apparently the reason why Metallica frontman James Hetfield's mic wasn’t working during the band’s live performance with Lady Gaga last night at the 59th annual Grammy Awards.

Writes TMZ:

"Sources connected to the production tell us everything was fine right before the “Moth Into Flame” collab was about to begin. Gaga and the band’s line check, right before the performance, went off without a hitch. However, between the mic check and their act … a wire under the stage got unplugged. We’re told a stagehand did it by accident, but the damage was done"

In other news Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine has commented on Metallica's classic "Master Of Puppets" being played as the band walked down to the stage yesterday to accept its award for "Best Metal Performance".

Amorphis Posts "Her Alone" Live Track

Amorphis recently played special "An Evening With Friends" shows in Helsinki, which will be part of the impending "Under The Red Cloud" tour edition featuring the original album along with bonus tracks and live material from the Helsinki shows.

Today, the band unveils the first video to one of these live tracks. Check out "Her Alone" featuring Anneke van Giersbergen below.

Anneke states: "I was honored and stoked that Amorphis asked me to perform with them at this special event. I have been listening to their latest album 'Under The Red Cloud' non stop since it came out so you can imagine I said yes to the occasion wholeheartedly! Tomi is such an awesome singer and performer and I felt right at home singing with him. He and the band gave me full creative freedom to make their songs my own and do them justice with my vocal contribution."

"'Evening with friends' was a very unique show that left warm feelings to all us who experienced it from and off the stage," continues guitarist Esa Holopainen. "We really wanted to have artists performing who’s music and talent touches us. So when Anneke was in Finland playing her previous acoustic show couple months earlier we asked from her if she’s interested to perform with us. At the end of the day it was a bit versus vice, I played couple songs with her at acoustic show in Helsinki that took place same weekend with Amorphis event. When you hear her voice you recognize immediately that it’s Anneke. There are not many such talented singers around so we were really privileged to have her on board. 'Her Alone' is a track from the 'Silent Waters' album that is very dramatic and big song. When Tomi and Anneke shares the vocals it really made the song to another level." More...

Nile Recruits New Member

Nile will embark on a next tour in support of "What Should Not Be Unearthed" today - February 14th, 2017 - alongside Overkill while visiting 24 cities across America. The band today also announces that Dallas Toler-Wade has decided to leave Nile to focus on his own plans and recordings.

This tour also marks the debut of Nile’s newest member, guitarist / vocalist Brian Kingsland. After this tour, the band is scheduled to return to Europe this Summer for a series of metal festivals followed by a WSNBU-Latin America tour.

Nile is already working on songs for the band's next album, which will be recorded in late 2017 for an early 2018 release. More info will be released in the coming months.

Karl Sanders comments: "I would like to personally thank Dallas Toler-Wade for his many years with the band, and sincerely wish him well with his music. All of us in Nile are truly happy and thankful to be working with Brian. Not only is he a seriously talented extreme metal guitar shredder, but he has a great brutal metal voice, with a very versatile range.

"Brian is also a genuine, down-to-earth hard-working and motivated guy who has helped reignite and re-establish a sense of team work back into Nile. With the addition of Brian on guitar and vocals, the band right now seems to me a lot more like the early years of Nile - the classic Nile era when we were all functioning as a cohesive unit, in viciously brutal triple vocal attack mode.
