We've been tracking down bands and fans all across the world to get their best mosh pit stories from live shows. This week lead guitarist Gizz Butt of English Dogs shares several stories from the band's early career, as well as a tale of a mid-show rescue mission caused by a collapsing floor with The Prodigy.
When the English Dogs toured the USA in 1986 our first show was at the Olympic Auditorium in LA and we were stunned to see 5 WHOLE SEPARATE CIRCLE PITS all individually operating at the same time. Now the venue was a fairly decent size, we’ve played bigger gigs but I have NEVER in 25 years seen that many mosh pits all at once. I played in The Prodigy 1996 – 2000 and I never saw that with them. 5 pits is a pretty remarkable sight.
We played a show at Fenders Ballroom in LA again back in 1986 that was again packed to such a limit with the wildest fans on earth, stage diving and slamming harder than anyone. The heat and energy in the place was outstanding. The stage divers and moshers were encouraging us perform more crazy feats on stage and were trying their utmost to wear us out in record time. English Dogs drummer PINCH was blowing everyone away and you could see the sweat pouring off him in torrents. There was no air in the place and after another breakneck paced number Pinch duly threw up all over his kit. He had to go out for air but after a couple of minutes was back in action and was carried back to the stage having drank 3 or 4 pints of water. He picked up the sticks and the madness continued.
I did witness something pretty extreme when with The Prodigy, and that was at a show in London at the Brixton academy. The Brits were going absolutely NUTS and were jumping so hard and so high the the dance floor collapsed and the first dozen rows of punkers all sank through the floor, disappearing in a cloud of dust! We had to stop while everyone was rescued and barriers were put around the massive hole and we just started again! Hah hah. They didn’t care that they’d just had the fright of their life, they just wanted more!
I’m happy to say that whenever I’ve been in the pit, I’ve always come out with all limbs intact, no broken bones, a bit of a headache and ripped clothing. I’ve lost my cell phone too but I’ve always managed to keep my pants and shoes. Unlike some people!
English Dogs is currently headlining North America with support by The Casualties, Toxic Holocaust, and Havok. Back in 1981 British punk / metal crossover band English Dogs was formed. Though initial releases were more straight-forward punk rock, the band's metal leanings appeared on the "Forward Into Battle" record, released in 1985. According to a press release, "The seminal album was a major influence on bands such as Metallica, and this year the 'Forward Into Battle' line-up of founding-member Andrew 'Pinch' Pinching (also of The Damned), Graham 'Gizz' Butt (Prodigy, The More I See) and Adie Bailey have forged to again bring that record to life for North America." Within days of announcing the departure of Matt DeVries, Six Feet Under has locked in the latest addition to the band's already heavy and extremely talented lineup. Seven-string bassist Jeff Hughell, formally of the Santa Cruz California technical death metal band Brain Drill and Concord California death metal band Vile, will be joining the ranks as the new Six Feet Under bassist. Check out a video of Jeff shredding on his bass here.
Vocalist Chris Barnes comments: "Six Feet Under is proud to announce our new member, bass player Jeff Hughell. He's an amazing musician and I have been a fan of his work since first hearing Brain Drill a few years back. We feel with the addition of Jeff, all the puzzle pieces are in place and the killing machine known as Six Feet Under is now a true death metal force to be reckoned with! Prepare to be toe tagged and body bagged."
Jeff Hughell adds, "I am honored to be the newest edition to the mighty Six Feet Under. This band is now a well oiled killing machine with Kevin Talley and myself as the rhythm section, Steve Swanson and Rob Arnold crushing guitars, and of course the man himself Chris Barnes killing it on vocals. The new material is the heaviest Six Feet Under songs I have ever heard and I can't wait for the world to get their faces melted clean off by it. I would like to thank Mike Faley, Kelli Malella and the whole Six Feet Under family for thinking of me. It's going to be one hell of a ride!"
Sylosis has issued the following announcement about upcoming U.K. tour dates:
"I’m pleased to announce we’ll be heading back out into the UK this April on a club tour around some of the secondary cities in England. We rarely get an opportunity to play the smaller towns and this seemed like the best chance we’d get in support of the digital release of ‘Slings and Arrows’. We originally released the single exclusively through Pledge, but after talking with the fans who bought it initially they seemed very keen on the idea of it being released generally…so here we are.
"We’re taking out 3 great UK bands, 2 of which we have never toured with before. This looks like the last time we’re going to be able to take out a full UK band package so we wanted to make it as diverse and interesting as possible. We decided ‘Hang the Bastard’ would be a great choice as they’ve really turned away from the conventional/bland metal music scene and that’s something we completely agree with. ‘Xerath’ - one of my favourite UK bands at the moment, very tight live and I look forward to watching them each night. Finally we’re taking out ‘Chapters’ again, they’re not only great friends with the band but they’re quickly gaining profile. This tour will be their first chance to get out of the key city shows.
"We hope to see you out there and we hope you enjoy ‘Slings and Arrows’ when its released on the 2nd Feb!" More...

ICS Festival Service GmbH is the International tour promoter for The European Tour and under the direction of Thomas Jensen, CEO Global Touring and Chairman – ICS who said: “Kamelot has set out to revolutionize Metal music and with their new production they continue to do exactly that. Earache Records has issued the following announcement about re-releasing the "Scum" album from Napalm Death on CD and vinyl:
"It's an extreme noise pleasure! SCUM, the classic 1987 debut album from grindcore pioneers NAPALM DEATH, is due to be re-released on limited edition redux CD and coloured vinyl LP on March 5th.
"To celebrate 25 years since the release of the most influential grindcore album ever made, SCUM has been remastered especially for this release from the original tapes with Full Dynamic Range (FDR), allowing the music's nuances to shine through and giving the whole album a more ferocious and dynamic sound than ever before, and enabling the listener to immerse in the full audio chaos like never before."
Original NAPALM DEATH guitarist and founding member MICK HARRIS states: "It sounds wicked - that record still holds up today and I'm proud I was part of it."
Earache added, "This full dynamic range release is a reaction to the loudness war which has affected the music scene since the '90s, with artists and labels striving to producer ever-louder CDs. Earache firmly believes the playback volume should be in the hands of the listener, not the producer - that's what the volume control is for! See a comparison of the 'Scum' full dynamic range audio against the previous version at this location. More...

"Since helping to forge the North American thrash movement in the '80s EXCITER's layered 34-year career has elevated them to legendary status, and their most recent album, 2010's Death Machine delivers nine-songs of the expected headbashing mayhem fans worldwide have come to expect from the outfit. 'Emerge' displays 13 heterogeneous and energetic power metal songs enriched by deep lyrical themes and epic scenarios.
"The music is aggressive but non-destructive, willing to drive the listener to emerge from any adverse situation. Instruments such as accordions, classical guitars and violins have been added to the mix (with a special mention for the guest appearance by Laura Brancorsini of Furor Gallico), giving it an unusual flavor which will no doubt attract even the most demanding audience.
"'Emerge' was mixed by Nino Laurenne (Sonata Arctica, Amorphis, Wintersun, Elvenking) at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Finland, and mastered by Svante Forsbäck at Chartmakers Studios (Rammstein, Korpiklaani, Amorphis). Finnish metal act Sons Of Aeon, featuring former and current members of Ghost Brigade, Swallow the Sun, Code For Silence and Endstand) posted a recording update for the band's debut album for Lifeforce Records for release in 2012.
Guitarist Tapio Vartiainen checked in from the studio with the following update:
It’s an odd case, this Sons Of Aeon. Here I sit and try to write news about our debut album and to start with, I don’t really even know how to describe our sound to strangers. There’s so much different things going on…it’s tricky to find the right words that’d make the songs justice. It’s very intense and it’s very musical, that’s for sure.
I think that our love for 90's Death Metal shines through in most songs but there’s also a lot of these more moody, melancholic passages and even some Hardcore/Punk touches. And to me, those elements really make all the difference. It’s an interesting blend of styles and strangely, it all makes sense.
Anyway, the songwriting process is now done and we’re starting the drum recordings at the end of May. So if all goes well we should have the finished album in our hands some time during the summer. To say we’re excited and proud about all this would be an understatement. We can’t fucking wait to get this album done.
For a taste of the band's sound, the song "Burden" can be heard by heading over to this location.
German death metal band Dawn Of Disease has unveiled the cover art and revealed the track listing for the upcoming sophomore release "Crypts of the Unrotten" (seen below). The album is scheduled for released on April 27, 2012 through NoiseArt Records.
The band commented on the album and working with producer Jörg Uken (God Dethroned, Dew-Scented, Sinister):
After recording our debut album in Soundlodge it was clear to us to go there again, since we had been very happy with how it turned out the first time. Jörg is a great guy and this time we had much more time to record and all than last time.
The album is a concept with the main theme centering on the huge crypts in Sicily, near Palermo, where hundreds of mummies lie buried. As the band explains:
Our guitar player Lukas 'dug up' the topic and the atmosphere as well as the stories around all those 'Crypts' have both fascinated and influenced us as a band. It´s the main theme of the album and also refers to it unmistakable in the album title.More...

German thrash metal veterans Tankard have announced that they've signed a new deal with Nuclear Blast Records. Speaking on the signing, band leader Gerre stated:
"As the want-away footballers always say: I’m looking for a new athletic challenge……. baloney! We’ve only inked a deal with Nuclear Blast because they’ve offered most prest-money for a transfer…. hahaha okay, seriousness aside: We’re totally happy to have found accommodation at the metal label no.1 and are chuffed about the collaboration, hoping that this will give Tankard a big boost in their 30th year of existence! It took quite a while ‘til we came ashore here, but then again, Rome wasn’t built in a day, as we all know!"
Andy Siry (Head of A&R at Nuclear Blast) adds: "From the Hardcore Party 1987 in Oberursel (live Tankard, Angel Dust and Destruction) on I’ve taken Tankard into my heart. With the signing of Tankard’s contract, the 'best case scenario' has finally come to pass. I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve come to an agreement with our Hessian buddies – even though I’ll unfortunately suffer from the signing party’s aftermath for some more days, haha. Joke apart. I’m very happy that Tankard will be members of the Nuclear Blast family from now on and will enrich our roster of dyed-in-the-wool thrash metal bands. And announcing this new signing on Valentine’s Day proves that this is more than just a business matter to us. After 25 years of 'concubinage' we’ve finally tied the knot in the big anniversary year (25 years of Nuclear Blast, 30 years of Tankard). By the way: We’re expecting our first offspring to be born this summer."
North Carolina’s MAKE plays this lumbering, atmospheric metal that could be familiar to those who listen to bands in the style of Neurosis. They aren’t a complete knock-off of some well-known band though, as evident by their upcoming debut album, “Trephine.” The concept album dwells into the mystery of life after death and handling a post-apocalyptic universe. The trio, which started out as a four-piece, matches this lofty ambition with a mass of heaviness, coupled with brief fancies of melodic ambience. I had the opportunity to get some comments out of vocalist/guitarist Scott Endres about the band’s background and the creation of “Trephine.” More...

Underground journalist Ryan Bartek has just re-released the book "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" as a free PDF Download. Featuring new cover art and a redesigned look, this new version finally does visual justice to the original.
The product of one year spent traveling the USA underground, "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" is a genre-bending work of nonfiction that is at once a road book and a journalistic expose on American counterculture as well.
In "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" Bartek makes it through 35 states, spends 600+ hours on Greyhounds while interviewing a variety of celebrities, musicians, journalists and travelers. Covering all forms of counterculture with a heavy emphasis on extreme metal & hardcore punk, “The Big Shiny Prison” refuses to become a stereotypical “music book.” It instead falls into the category of the autobiographical road novel using a relevant approach that appeals to both the average reader & the critical academia.
Originally released on 11/15/09, the book features interviews/appearances by DWARVES, Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer, MDC, Repulsion, Psyopus, Cephalic Carnage, Downtown Brown, HIMSA, Atheist, Foxy Shazam, STALAGGH, Absymal Dawn, Ludicra, The Angelic Process, AxCx & many more. More...
