Chevelle Still Dealing w/ Awkward Family Situation

LaunchDaily.com reports: Chevelle's new album, Vena Sera, is the first to feature bassist Dean Bernardini, who replaced Joe Loeffler last year. Joe is the brother of Chevelle singer/guitarist Pete Loeffler and drummer Sam Loeffler, and his exit was not exactly on good terms. Although the band has settled its business issues with Joe, Pete Loeffler told us that their personal relationship is still on the outs: "Awkward is an understatement for the family life now. As far as get-togethers, holidays, nothing's settled there yet. Christmas was pretty weird, to say the least. But that's life. People need to treat people with respect, and if there's respect, then there's always resolution. There's not a lot of that right now, and basically that's the next hurdle."

Chevelle has set April 3rd as the release date for Vena Sera. The CD's first single, "Well Enough Alone," arrived at radio stations on Monday, January 29th.

Sam Loeffler told Harddrive Radio that at least one of the songs on the new album, "Safer Waters," was inspired by the situation with Joe.

New bassist Dean Bernardini is also the Loefflers' brother-in-law, having married their youngest sister Natalie.

Chevelle will hit the road as openers for Evanescence, beginning on March 16th in Fresno, California.

Yakuza Demoing New Material

Chicago's YAKUZA have begun demoing new material in the band's hometown at Semifour Studios for the band's forthcoming new album, tentatively titled 'Transmutations' and scheduled for a late 2007 release through Prosthetic Records. Sanford Parker (Pelican, Minsk, Rwake), who made a guest appearance on the band's last release, 'Samsara,' will be handling production duties when the band begins recording Feb. 28.

"This time it's all about variety, each song has its own personality with the album covering a much broader spectrum," frontman Bruce Lamont said. "The extremes are really drastic: super schizoid-brutal to almost reflective and minimal. Just like with 'Samsara,' we're looking at this album as a whole. I don't want to say the album will be an 'experience' per-se because that sounds too hippie-ish, but it's gonna be one of those things that you have to listen to start to finish."

YAKUZA has been also been added to the Chicago date of the upcoming tour featuring Genghis Tron and labelmates KYLESA at the Beat Kitchen and the band will be previewing new material at the show.

YAKUZA on tour:
4/08 Chicago, IL – Beat Kitchen (with Genghis Tron, Kylesa)

Lebanon's Underground Musicians Discuss Censorship

There an interesting article online about Lebanese bands and the discussion of censorship within the country. Here are some excepts:

Heavy metal music has come in for harassment and censorship over in Lebanon at various times over the years because of its alleged satanic links. (Similar moves against heavy metal and its fans have been seen in Egypt and Morocco).

Moe Hamzeh, leader and founder in 1992 of the Beirut-based rock group "The Kordz" described to Burkhalter the clampdown on metal music in the 1990s. After the singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, a young man in Beirut also killed himself and the authorities claimed he had been influenced to do so by Cobain.

Cyrille Najjar, a co-founder in 1996 of the "gothic" group "The Arcane" recalls how some of his friends were put in prison and beaten up. Burkhalter found that Garo Gdanian, the leader of the Death Metal group "Weeping Willow" did not seem to care too much about censorship. "At the same time his band practises quite a lot of self-censorship - a strategy that is not unknown in the Lebanese metal scene." Some albums of metal music are still on a black list.

Xardas, a 24-year-old Lebanese from Tripoli whose real name is Osman Arabi, suffered a striking case of music censorship in June 2006. Xardas is a composer and producer of a genre of electronic music known as "dark ambient". In April 2006 he released an album entitled "Acid Vomit. Human Genocide" on the US record label Autumn Wind Productions.

When the US record label sent 150 of the CDs to Xardas they were seized by General Security on the grounds that they were "satanic" and "offensive to people's morals". Xardas was summoned by the headquarters of General Security, and had to sign a paper promising he would not send or receive any packages containing "dark, harsh or weird" music. He was warned that if he broke his promise he would be arrested and jailed without trial.
