Ten years. That's how long it took Jesse Leach, the arresting voice of one of the millenium's most influential American metal albums "Alive Or Just Breathing," to rejoin his brothers in Massachusetts powerhouse Killswitch Engage. Less than one week after the official announcement on Monday, February 6, I visited the cozy Easy Street Nightclub in Greenfield for an evening of local and regional metal - headlined by one of Jesse's beloved interim projects, The Empire Shall Fall (latest release reviewed here). Following the spellbinding set, we sat aside in a secluded corner amidst a rowdy last-call bustle as the underground dive bar cleared out for the night. With a little help from amorous Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) and aspiring TV interviewer Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall), Jesse filled in Metal Underground on all the major current happenings in his career. The complete, unabridged transcript follows. More...
Continuing our ongoing coverage of black metal history month, it’s time to dive into three more underground acts that don’t have as large a following as the biggest names in the scene, but are still among the best the genre has to offer. Last week we highlighted three misanthropic black metal bands, and now it’s time to check out groups that take the sound in a different direction.
Pipe organs, keyboards, violins, a grandiose style; all these and more are typical of this breed of metal, in which screeches from hell and fast paced guitars meet beautiful heights of orchestral symphonies. From the mildly melodic to the completely symphonic, these three bands show that injecting non-metal elements doesn’t have to detract from the darkness.
Hailing from black metal ground zero (that mythical land and metal Mecca otherwise known as Norway) and featuring Windir keyboardist Gaute Refsnes, Cor Scorpii has the requisite pedigree to grab the attention of genre fans. Unlike with the other two bands covered this week, Cor Scorpii’s keyboards are tempered and held on a fairly tight leash, letting the guitar tone drive the music. This tasteful restraint results in a sound that is melodic and highly atmospheric without getting overbearingly symphonic. The end product has a swelling and epic quality that is surprising considering the presence of the extremely harsh vocals and dark feeling. Even with the melodic bent the band’s music still tends to be properly dark and chilling, as any black metal release should.
So far Cor Scorpii’s fans have had to be content with only a single proper album, but – praise be to the dark one! – the band officially began the recording process for a sophomore album and follow-up to the debut full-length “Monument” earlier this month. Keep up with Cor Scorpii’s latest activity via Facebook or get a taste of the band’s mix of the extreme and the melodic through the songs below.

U.K. traditional/power metal act Vendetta posted a promotional video featuring the new track "Halo in Black." The song appears on the band's forthcoming third LP "World Under Fire," which is due out March 23rd, 2012 through Lion Music.
The track listing for "World Under Fire" is as follows:
2. Halo in Black
4. Veil of Empathy
5. Blast Radius
6. Lords of Chaos
7. Fragmented Reality
8. The Ghost Inside
9. All Your Setting Suns
10. We are Legion

Footage has been posted online of Icelandic metallers Solstafir performing the song "Æra" live on February 9th, 2012.
Check out the video clip below, or find the band's recently posted music video for the song "Fjara" at this location. Both tracks are taken from Solstafir's latest album "Svartir Sandar" (reviewed here).
Burgeoning Ohio metallers Eternal Void are a rarity in the underground scene: an unsigned band that already sounds like a top quality act that should be booking cross country tours and selling out venues.
With the release of the new EP "One Of Us" (review forthcoming shortly) Eternal Void shows a smooth blending of various extreme styles, while still keeping up a head bobbing melody and memorable song structures.
After getting my first taste of the EP I got in contact with guitarist Evan Hilderbrandt to talk about the band's unique yet still familiar sound and dive deeper into the themes of the EP. Evan shared his thoughts on the Occupy Wallstreet movement and how its message has been received over time, the Ohio metal scene, and even his excitement to see what's coming up next from the mighty Behemoth now that Nergal is back at the helm again. Check out the full interview below. More...
Hate has posted the following message online about canceling the band's upcoming European shows with Suffocation:
"Regrettably Hate will not play on the announced European tour dates with Suffocation and Cattle Decapitation.
"This decision was not made lightly, but out of personal reasons we are unable to be part of the tour. We wish the other bands all the best for the tour and hope you, our fans, still go out and support this awesome line-up.
"To all our European fans, we are going to make up for it and already have some things planned for later this year.
"In addition, we are already in the song writing mode and working on some material for the new album which is due to be recorded this summer with a tentative release date in autumn by our new label Napalm Records."
Indiana metal powerhouse The Contortionist made the trek down to Audiohammer Studios in Orlando, FL earlier this week to begin the recording process for the follow-up to "Exoplanet." Famed producers Jason Suecof and Eyal Levi (August Burns Red, The Black Dahlia Murder) will be behind the boards for the new release, which is set to hit stores in late spring/early summer 2012.
“The Contortionist's jaw dropping debut was a special record for Good Fight, being one of the first bands we signed to the label,” states Good Fight Music label head Carl Severson. “Watching them grow since the release of Exoplanet has been awesome. Coupling them with the talents of Jason and Eyal at Audiohammer is going to result in an utter monster of an album! Can't wait for it.”
“I'm ready for The Contortionist to take my legs and pretzel them through my eyes while my ears get sonically brutalized,” adds co-producer Jason Suecof.
"It’s really cool that we’re recording in the same studio as some of the same bands that we’ve been listening to for a long time. Some of our favorite records have been produced here,” states guitarist Robby Baca. “Jason is crazy as fuck, Eyal is chill as fuck, and we’re a combination of both so it’s a great fit.” More...
Russian metal band Shturm has posted a music video online for the track “Solitude Beside,” taken from the new album “Karmaruna.” The video is available below, and the band commented:
"This song tells about notorious solitude which follows every human even when they are among the closest friends and relatives, the solitude which dwells deep down in our souls, that only we ourselves has a gift to know its face. Its only our will – whether to escape it hiding behind the unsteady shields of everydayness or to live in chime with it, hearing the words of the wisemen. The choice of the main character of the song is hidden behind the picture and music."
"Karmaruna" is planned to be released this coming March 2012 by Darknagar Records.
Unearth's new video for "Watch It Burn" from "Darkness in the Light" is now streaming on Metalinjection.net. The video, which was directed by Scott Hansen (A Day To Remember, I Wrestled A Bear Once, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster), is a dark and disturbing video to match the equally bleak lyrics of the song. The video can be seen now here, or in the player below..
Vocalist Trevor Phipps elaborates on the video: "This video captures both the energy we put into every performance as well as imagery of the dark lyrical content of "Watch it Burn". We want to thank Scott Hansen and his crew for their hard work delivering such a sick video for our fans to see. Check it out!"
Unearth's next round of touring will be across Australia as a part of the Soundwave Festival. The tour kicks off February 25th in Brisbane and features Slipknot, System of a Down, A Day To Remember, Bush, Lamb of God, Machine Head and many more. For the full line up, visit this location. In addition to the festival, Unearth will perform on some festival off-dates in Australia and New Zealand.
Following the band's trip down under, Unearth will be re-conquering Europe starting March 20th in support of fellow metal heavyweights, Heaven Shall Burn. The band will make return trips to Europe through April, June, July and August for multiple festival appearances including: Groezrock, Hellfest, Graspop Metal Meeting, With Full Force, Wacken and Summer Breeze Open Air. Frech act Infected Society has officially inked a new deal with Kaotoxin Records for the release of an as-yet-untitled debut MCD in early May. Metalunderground.com will be streaming a new track from the release titled "Victims of Procreation" online tomorrow. Kaotoxin commented on the band's history:
"After having played together in various extreme bands for over a decade, Fack (ex-Yyrkoon, ex-Drowning, ex-Decline Of Humanity, ex-Burgul Torkhaïn, ex-Ashura...) and Brédin (Decline Of Humanity, ex-DSK, ex-Tridus Elasticus, ex-Altered Beast...) decided to form a more extreme project of their own late 2010. Infected Society was born.
"Focusing on a very fresh blend of old-school Napalm Death, scum era, meets modern grindcore, Infected Society has recorded what can be felt at the first listen as being a totally straight-ahead grindcore debut MCD but which, for the lover of the genre, will prove being more diverse, fresh and catchy than most of all the copycats releases of an over-populated scene nowadays, adding fastcore, hardcore and thrash influences to their blasting madness.
"Mastered at the famous Walnut Groove studio ran by ex-Carnival In Coal member, Alex, the, as of now yet untitled, debut MCD, first release of the multi-album deal signed with KAOTOXIN records, will be released early May through KAOTOXIN records to coincide with a set of gigs Infected Society is to play with ex-Drowning members and friends: France's dark doom masters Eibon." Comprised of 10 tracks engineered by Zack Ohren at Castle Ultimate Studios (As Blood Runs Black, All Shall Perish, In the Midst of Lions), Now We Are Free blends metal and hardcore influences seamlessly and is a must have album for fans of Hatebreed and Living Sacrifice.
"Leaders will be taking their live show on the road and will be on tour for all of 2012. The band describes their live shows as 'powerful, intimate, and real. Who can forget when heavy metal was arguably at its peak in the late '70s and early '80s? You had bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden revolutionizing the sound, while movements the NWOBHM redefined what heavy metal could represent. While the essence of heavy metal has been teared apart and stripped into dozens of genres, there are still modern bands like Christian Mistress who are repping that early heavy metal mentality.
Whether it’s on purpose or not, Christian Mistress has really honed into what makes heavy metal so timeless on their new record, “Possession.” With dueling guitars and dominating female vocals, this album has its heart firmly set in the old-school. I had a chance to speak to vocalist Christine Davis about “Possession,” being labeled a “NWOBHM”-like band, and how their raw production values are unintentional. More...

The report from Paul Bostaph on the band's Facebook page reads as follows:
"What's up everybody?! As you can see by our studio blog #1. We're currently hard at work writing the rest of the material to record and release a record this year. we are shopping for a label at this point ) The new material is friggin' heavy. We can't wait to unleash it on you! The music is definitely maturing and we are honing in on our sound. The first 3 songs we released were literally the first 3 we wrote. They were written musically without a vocalist. Now that we have Dan, the new songs are really heavy as hell and have great hooks! That being said. We're looking to play our first show in May and will be playing all our new music. Stay posted and we will update you all as we lock the first show in. Hope to see you all on the road Cheers!
