Hammerdrone Prepares For The "Dark Harvest"

Over the last few years I've been consistently impressed with the quality of the underground metal scene across Canada.

Counted among that thriving metallic community is melodic death outfit Hammerdrone (and now I can't stop thinking about a drone that launches Super Mario style hammers instead of missiles - sorry guys, that's probably not what you were going for!).

Following the "Clone of Europa" album from back in 2013, the Hammerdrone is getting ready for another strike in the form of second full-length album "Dark Harvest." While that album isn't due until late March, we've got plenty of advance info to fans to wade through after checking in with vocalist Graham Harris.

From the real life, stranger-than-fiction origins that inspired the album to the tendency of Americans to view Canadians as hyper nice people, we cover a bit of everything below, including all things "Dark Harvest!" More...

As Minneapolis-based technical/avant-garde death metal trio Sunless prepares for the release of the "Urraca" debut full-length in late February, today advance track "The Ancient Ones" has been released online.

Sunless reinterprets influence from pioneers of extreme, dissonant metal, such as Gorguts, Ulcerate, and Deathspell Omega through an abstract lens that is all the band's own, boasting a prominent rhythm section, a scattered assortment of time signatures, interwoven and complex arrangements, and bellowing death growls.

The new album was tracked by Adam Tucker at Signaturetone Recording in Minneapolis (The Crinn, Ambassador Gun, Maeth), and mixed/mastered by Colin Marston at Menegroth, The Thousand Caves in Queens, New York. More...

He goes on to say, "It was written over the course of many months, seeing revision after revision, and did not feel finished until we received the guest vocals from Brooks Wilson (Crypt Sermon). First Blood Streaming Full Album

Vicious metal-edged hardcore group First Blood is gearing up for the release of new album, "Rules," on February 10th via Pure Noise Records. In anticipation, the band today streams this new record in its entirety ahead of time - check it out below.

First Blood comes out swinging with "Rules," the band's first album in seven years that was produced by recording mastermind Will Putney at Graphic Nature Studios (formerly known as The Machine Shop) in Belleville, NJ.

Elaborating on the album title, vocalist Carl Schwartz says: "Rules are everywhere. Explicit rules. Unwritten rules. Unspoken rules. The rule of law. Some rules we accept. Others we hate or choose to ignore. Frequently, those who set the rules are found guilty of breaking those rules. Many have become victims of the rules they live by, either by conquest or consent. I hope that, after listening to this album and reading the lyrics, we can revisit and remind ourselves of the very essence of the underground music scene: Living our own lives by our own rules." Sicocis Posts "Beyond The Quantum Waves"

As was recently announced, Sicocis has scheduled February 24th as the release date for new album "Requiem of the World" via M-Theory Audio. Following that news comes new track "Beyond the Quantum Waves," which can be heard below.

“’Beyond the Quantum Waves’ is our epic, melodic, sci-fi episode that combines great progressive elements with a dark cyber cloud hanging over it as you listen,” explains guitarist Rafael Ortega, who created the lyric video.

“It’s the contradictory lyrical concept about the atom and how scientists found this everlasting power for life and yet we used it to destroy, hence the atom bomb. Einstein knew that by using it as a weapon it would cause more pain and suffering as mankind knows its power only as a weapon and not for something that can progress life,” explains singer/guitarist Ernie Rodrigues. “We tried to bring that element of science and technology to the music, as well, mixing in synthetic sounds with organic orchestrations and choir fusing that progressive metal groove with a shred metal piece.”

Like what you hear below? You can catch Sicocis live on these upcoming U.S. shows in Nevada and California:

Assemble The Chariots Parts With Vocalist

Vocalist Kristo Sundström from Finnish outfit Assemble The Chariots just issued this announcement about departing the band:

"After a long period of uncertainty and doubt I have finally come to the decision that after today I will be stepping down from the lead vocalist position in Assemble the Chariots. Now, many of you will probably start speculating for the reasons of my departure from the band due to recent events, but let me assure you this is not a heat of the moment decision but rather one that took me years to decide.

"Being in ATC has been...interesting. When I first joined I was taken by their technical skills and the song 'Necrophilia' blew me away, but things chance and people change and I have come the conclusion that I am not the right person to be in Assemble the Chariots.

"A mix between professional and personal difference in opinions and other long term things have contributed to this decision, I felt it to be best that the band continues onwards with someone else leading the helm. What it all basically boils down to is how we wanted to act and work as a band and after a prolonged period of working against my own style this was an relatively easy decision. More...

Amon Amarth Bringing Viking Ship To Illinois

When Swedish metal band Amon Amarth takes the stage at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois on Sunday, July 16th in support of latest album "Jomsviking," attendees will be treated to quite a visual spectacle.

Evocation Streaming "Children Of Stone"

On March 10th, Evocation will celebrate a return to death metal with the stunning new album, "The Shadow Archetype." While honoring the group's Swedish death metal roots, "The Shadow Archetype" also adds thrash metal elements for an addictive, heavy sound.

For a first preview of the album, the single "Children of Stone" can be heard below. Evocation guitarist Marko Palmen comments: "In my opinion, the new album is a step towards the roots of the band, although it also has a footing in the future. I think the sound of the new album in many ways reflect the dynamic of me and Simon, who wrote the music for the album.

"I'm more of an old-school death metal kind of guy and Simon comes from the younger generation of death metal freaks who enjoy technicality and brutality. Somehow, we just merged those two sides of death metal into the creation that will be known as 'The Shadow Archetype'. But I also have to point out that the album is a creation made by all the members of Evocation and I think we all pushed ourselves to the very limit of what is achievable. I'm certain that we all can stand proud of the album in the future."

Featuring a cover and layout by Xaay (Behemoth, Nile, etc.), "The Shadow Archetype" was recorded at three different studios and features the following track listing: More...

Bandcamp Donating To ACLU In #NoBanNoWall Protest

Bandcamp - a site that has become the mecca for all things underground metal - is getting involved in protests against the Trump administration's immigration ban and proposed $15 billion border wall.

This coming Friday, Bandcamp is donating 100% of their profits from any song purchased all day long to the ACLU. Bandcamp founder Ethan Diamond posted a list of groups from the affected countries, including Syrian metal band Theoria, at this location. What do you think of this decision and Bandcamp's involvement in the situation?

Diamond also issued this statement:

"Like 98% of U.S. citizens (including the President), I am the descendant of immigrants—my great-grandparents came to America from Russia and Lithuania as teenagers and worked in sweatshops until they were able to afford to bring the rest of their families over. Most everyone you speak to in this country has a similar story to tell, because we are, in fact, a nation of immigrants, bound together by a shared belief in justice, equality, and the freedom to pursue a better life. In this context, last week’s Executive Order barring immigrants and refugees from seven Middle Eastern countries from entering the United States is not simply immoral, it violates the very spirit and foundation of America.

"Contrary to the assertions of the current administration, the order will not make us safer (an opinion shared by the State Department and many members of Congress including prominent Republicans). Christian religious leaders have denounced both the ban, as well as the exception prioritizing Christian immigrants, as inhumane. It is an unequivocal moral wrong, a cynical attempt to sow division among the American people, and is in direct opposition to the principles of a country where the tenet of religious freedom is written directly into the Constitution. This is not who we are, and it is not what we believe in. We at Bandcamp oppose the ban wholeheartedly, and extend our support to those whose lives have been upended. More...

Azarath Signs With Agonia Records

Polish black/death metal tyrants Azarath has signed a new record deal with Agonia Records. The latest release with the label was the 2009 offering "Praise The Beast." The band is expected to release a new album, the successor to "Blasphemers' Maledictions" from six years ago, this April.

Azarath's brand of death metal is crisp, black, and while it possesses the charm of American counterparts, it remains open-minded and organic. This should not come as a surprise, considering the band's impressive line-up and cemented position as one the the best Polish acts of the genre.

Azarath crept from the shadows almost two decades ago, by the will of Inferno (of longtime Behemoth fame) and then-members Bruno and D. Six albums later, the band's line-up is shaped by the said Behemoth drummer, together with Bart (Armagedon, Damnation) on guitars, Necrosodom (Anima Damnata, Deus Mortem, ex-Infernal War) on vocals and guitars, as well as Peter (ex-Lost Soul) on bass.

After rejoining forces with Agonia Records, Azarath is ready to shed some blood upon the altar once again in 2017. More...

Emerald Announces New Album "Reckoning Day"

Swiss metal act Emerald, one the home of Gloryhammer vocalist Thomas Winkler, announced the new album "Reckoning Day." The album is set to drop on March 24th via Pure Steel Records.

After the departure of singer Thomas L. Winkler, it became quiet around Emerald camp since the long-distance collaboration with the new American singer George Call (Aska, ex-Omen) (who joined in 2014) turned out to be very difficult. After two years, Emerald and Call parted ways as friends. This collaboration still resulted in three songs that from "Reckoning Day" ("Evolution In Reverse," "Through The Storm" and "End Of The World").

A more than worthy replacement was found in Swiss vocalist Mace Mitchell, who refined the remaining songs with his powerful voice and finally finished the record.

Those who know Emerald, know what they will get with "Reckoning Day": Pounding drums, heavy riffs and melodic leads, reinforced with vigorous power metal vocals with balls and a transparent but also very powerful production by V.O. Pulver (Gurd, Poltergeist, Destruction).

On the second half of the album, the band integrated a concept called "The Burgundian Wars," which is based on the historical novel "Der Löwe von Burgund" by keyboardist Thomas Vaucher.

The track listing for "Reckoning Day" is:

1. Only The Reaper Wins

Drummer/songwriter/lyricist Jarkko Lunnas commented: "Creating this album took us 3+ years of hard work, driving me and some of us almost insane during the process of recording the album almost entirely ourselves. It was a massive task but I believe it served the end result well!

"The album deals with separating the truth from the beliefs and seeing it (or not seeing it) through the different bubbles that we've learned to live in our stable and modern societies. We are estranged from the reality until we are forced to face it.

"The album delivers the message covering a whole spectrum of feelings from an atmospheric and emotional perspective, all the way to the maximal intensity."

"Reality Illusion" was mixed by Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Bloodbath, etc) at Unisound Studios. The track listing for the album is:

1. Intro
2. Beyond These Walls
3. Rulers Of Truth

Angel Martyr To Release Debut Full Length Album

Italian speed metal act Angel Martyr announced details of the upcoming full length debut entitled "Black Book: Chapter One." The album is set for release on March 17th via Iron Shield Records, with distribution via Pure Steel Records.

Angel Martyr was born from the ashes of the Wraith’sing, a project activated in 2006 by founding members Tiziano Hammerhead Sbaragli (Etrusgrave) and Tiziano Atreiu Chater (Ormgarth-former Imperium). The two came together to play pure heavy metal with fast and simple riffs, rhythmic impact, earsplitting high-notes and a powerful double bass drums. At that time, the song "Angel Martyr" was born, and quickly after was adopted as the band’s name. After some months, the members realized that musical visions were different and often very divergent so they split as friends.

In the 2012 installment of Heavy Metal Night, the band was reborn through Tiziano Sbaragli (vocals, guitars) and Dario Rosteni (bass) along with drummer Francesco Taddei - drums. Today, Taddei lives in London, but maintains his commitment with Angel Martyr. The band wrote and completed recordings for the full length debut.

The track listing for "Black Book: Chapter One" is:

1. Obsequies
2. They. ... Among Us
3. Victims
4. Eric The Conqueror
5. Midnight Traveller
6. Turn On The Fire
7. Pirate Song
8. On The Divine Battlefield
9. Angel Martyr More...
