It’s hardly necessary to point out why Gigantour, the recurring metal mini-festival on wheels led by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, is such an – ahem – gigantic draw. My last time seeing the band perform was for the tour’s third incarnation in April 2008, with support from In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Job For A Cowboy, and High On Fire. Round four boasts a package at once further streamlined and brawnier in industry clout, making this show a no-brainer for any heavy music fan within reasonable driving distance. With this firmly in mind, my photographer Tanya J. Kawecki and I set out for Lowell, Massachusetts on Sunday, January 29th. Our destination: UMass Lowell’s Tsongas Center, named – in the words of my colorful colleague Matt Dasher – “for the guy who famously didn’t become President in 1992.” More...

Even though I reside in the “drive through” state of Connecticut, I still find it odd that one of the most anticipated tours of the year would begin in a location that most bands/tours avoid. It has more to do with fans in the state. Real fans of metal usually head over to neighboring New York or Massachusetts for any quality metal and any other fans tend to stay at home on Tuesday rather than get out and witness a major tour that is literally within 20-40 minutes away. It is the sorry state of affairs that most real metal fans in Connecticut deal with. But here, a rare opportunity descended upon us and it was a night that the half-filled hall would not soon forget.
The bands arrived in town early, but for some reason the sound checking process started right about the time that doors should have opened. Iced Earth could easily be heard in a practice run of Dystopia while the crowd gathered and waited. The delay caused doors to open at approximately 6:45pm and by the time half the crowd had be properly frisked, entered and started to check out the merchandise table…Warbringer started its set. Montreal metal act Derelict has posted the following blog online via the band's official website regarding "technicality vs. songwriting" and the process writing the "Perpetuation" album:
"Hi guys, Max here. I would like to start this blog off by wishing all of our friends and fans a happy new year. We in the Derelict camp are anticipating a very busy 2012 and we hope you guys stick along for the ride as it should be a lot of fun. As I’m writing this our new album 'Perpetuation' has been mixed and mastered and we’re in the process of preparing for its release. Christian Donaldson from Garage Studios has done a fantastic job and the sound is killer. We cannot wait to launch it and we hope you guys enjoy the end result. We have worked very hard on this record and I believe this is our best work to date, which is a cliché line I know, but one I deliver with all honesty. We all have worked very hard on our respective instruments and are better musicians for it in my opinion.
"Writing music is a tricky thing. Everyone has their own process and there is no one way to write a good song. As a guitar player I like to challenge myself technically. This includes the occasional grueling practice session, going over scales and all that business. This can sometimes be a boring process but it helps me play our songs properly. Any guitarist that strives to achieve a certain degree of technical skill has to go through some solid woodshedding sessions. I like to think of it as sharpening your axe before shredding away with it. However, all the technical skill in the world can’t guarantee that you’ll play anything interesting. Music, like most art, is about making you feel something. What drove you to listen to that band or want to learn to play an instrument? I can’t answer that definitively but the odds are it’s because it made you feel something. More...
In a recent discussion with Alternative Music Hub Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier had the following to say about the band's forthcoming new studio album.
"We have a title but we can’t reveal it yet. The title will be surprising. We need to decide on the songs. At the moment we have 14 or 15 songs recorded but personally I would love to have all the songs on the album. I think we are keeping two songs as bonus tracks or something special. The album is simpler; there is more space and atmosphere which makes it massive. I think we created something big, catchy, kept the violence but we are more subtle this time."
The album is currently planned for a late 2012 release through the band's new label home Roadrunner Records.
Orange Goblin has checked in with the following announcement about changes to the band's upcoming tour dates:
"It is with great sadness that we have to report that the Orange Goblin show scheduled to take place at The Old Bell in Derby on Monday 9th April as part of the 'A Eulogy For The Damned' UK & Ireland tour has had to be canceled. This is due to circumstances beyond the control of Orange Goblin and the promoters (Onslaught Promotions) as the decision was made to pull the show by the venue themselves.
"Those that have pre-ordered tickets for the show are advised to contact your point of purchase to claim a full refund.
"Orange Goblin would like to apologise to all the fans that were looking forward to the show, which is a part of the UK & Ireland tour in April, and we hope that we will get to see our fans in the Midlands at the Morrowfest which takes place at Rock City, Nottingham on Sunday 13th May. On Monday 9th April, Orange Goblin will now be appearing at LEGENDS in Newcastle. For tickets and info on this show please go to this location."
