The 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise organizers have issued the following announcement about confirming Venom as the latest band to appear at the festival:
"Injected With Deadly Toxin: Please Welcome VENOM On Board! To travel from the North Sea into the Atlantic Ocean, they must sail around the British Isles. Before doing so they decided to visit a town in North East England that they are familiar with from last year: Newcastle, and what a welcome they got! On arrival they all got injected by a deadly toxin: VENOM!
"70000TONS OF METAL, The World's Biggest Floating Heavy Metal Festival now sails through the Channel into the Atlantic. Our course: Straight West. Make no mistake, 70000TONS OF METAL is not your grandma's cruise. It's also not one of the cruises that share the ship with normal cruise guests. This is an all heavy metal cruise! Can you imagine that? A whole luxury cruise ship full of metalheads? And since there is no backstage area you will have the opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. It's like everyone has a backstage pass!
"70000TONS OF METAL will sail Monday, January 23, 2012 aboard the Royal Caribbean 'Majesty of the Seas' from Miami FL to George Town, Cayman Islands and will not return you to the real world for four days until Friday, January 27, 2012."

Opeth released it's latest album "Heritage" back in September, and you can check out Metalunderground.com's review of the release here.
Bassist Youri Raymond has checked in with the following announcement about parting ways with Cryptopsy:
"I am officially announcing my departure of the band Cryptopsy. At this time, we feel it's in the best interest of both the band and I to part ways. As a musician, moving from guitar to bass was a great challenge, but honestly, I never really felt comfortable in that position and my motivation in general was stagnating.
"I'm now moving forward and will release an album in 2012 on guitar/lead vocals with my band Unhuman and I hope Jon, Matt, Chris Flo and the new guy who will fill in in the bass spot the very best with the upcoming album and what might be the 'real' Cryptopsy coming back!
"Thanks again fans and friends for your endless support! Peace out!"
Deathsquad Demongods recently released the debut album "Your New Favorite F**kin Band," which is available for streaming online below or through Bandcamp. The album's track listing is as follows:

Today Pitchfork.com premieres “Fire Burning,” the eighth track from "The Thousandfold Epicentre," the upcoming full-length from Dutch occult rockers The Devil's Blood. The album is set for North American release on January 17th, 2012. You can check out "Fire Burning" at this location.
Comments The Devil's Blood founder and leader SL: “The Devil's Blood have proven time and time again to be a completely self-reliant and untethered entity; we hold no allegiance with anyone, not even internally. We do not belong to any scene and refuse to be the face of any kind of movement or organization.
"The Devil's Blood is quite simply not of this world and holds no ties to it. We shall disappear as suddenly as we came when the time of the completion of our founding goals has been achieved. What these are is not known, not even to us. Without fear or hesitation we cast upon the fire our children for Moloch! Hail Satan!” More...
Swedish deathcrust ensemble Bombs of Hades are the latest addition to the ever-pummeling Pulverised Records roster. A press releasing about the signing reads as follows:
"Spawned in 2002 as a crustpunk act, Bombs of Hades quickly mutated into a gristly old-school Swedish death metal direction, while still retaining a strong d-beat/crust vibe. Fronted by Jonas Stålhammar (ex-God Macabre, ex-Utumno, etc), who recently served briefly with legendary Swedish thrashers The Crown, the band is now geared up for their second full-length, entitled A Serpent's Redemption. The follow-up to 2010's Chambers Of Abominations, released via Blood Harvest Records, is expected to drop sometime next year."
Commented Stålhammar: "Bombs of Hades is psyched to have the next album released through Pulverised. A Serpent's Redemption will satisfy souls starved for some true old-school death metal and will be unleashed before the Summer of 2012."
Added Pulverised Records A&R Manager Calvin Chiang: "Bombs of Hades is one band that have been on our radar for some time now. We finally thought it was time to seize the opportunity to grab them for a brand new record. To further confirm that our gut feeling was correct, our good old friend Ayong (founder of Pulverised Records) coincidentally recommended the band and strongly insisted we get Bombs of Hades on our roster by hook or by crook! Expect full-blown death metal abomination!"
Montreal technical death metal band Derelict has emerged from Christian Donaldson's Studio Le Garage (Cryptopsy, Beneath the Massacre) to provide a final production update and reveal the new album's track listing.
"This album was a lot of work!" states vocalist Eric Burnet. "However, I think it's paying off. We pushed ourselves to deliver the performances we wanted, and we have twelve brutal tunes to show for it."
The track listing for "Perpetuation" is as follows:
2. Spoils Of War
4. Digital Birthright
5. Intricate Decay
9. Yours To Surpass
10. Shackles Of Indoctrination
11. The Iridium Layer
A short video of guitarist Max Lussier working on the intro to "Spoils Of War" can be seen below. Derelict aims to release "Perpetuation" in early 2012. In the meantime, to close off 2011, the band has issued a special holiday merch deal that includes its entire digital discography bundled with various merch items for as low as they can be offered. More info is available on Bandcamp here. More...
The latest addition to the Metal Blade roster via Alan Nemtheanga's imprint, Poison Tongue Records, is Rhode Island's Pilgrim. The doom trio, which consists of Krolg Splinterfist, Slayer of Men on drums, Count Elric the Soothsayer on bass guitar, and The Wizard on guitar and vocals, will be performing their first ever headlining show next week in New York. The show will be at the Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn with Salo, Dutchguts and The Year is One. Doors are at 7:30pm and tickets are $8.
Pilgrim's debut album, "Misery Wizard," will be available on February 14th in North America and January 30th/27th in Europe. Fans that attend the Saint Vitus Bar show will hear the band perform the album in its entirety. You can check out the track "Astaroth" from the album at this location.
John Gallagher, guitarist and vocalist of Dying Fetus, has announced that the group has entered the studio to record a new full length album. The band will once again be working with longtime producer Steve Wright (Slipknot, Misery Index) at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore, MD.
Set to be released in mid 2012 through Relapse Records, the album will feature nine tracks and is a "return to roots" with production focused slightly more on slam than in the band's last few works. Thematically, the album is set to be a good old-fashioned piece of social and political commentary in the style of Dying Fetus as we have come to know. An official release date and album title will be announced shortly.
"The last album had some groove in it," stated John, "but [it] was basically a lot of tech; this one is a return to form of older DYING FETUS albums, so to speak- more modern production though, of course." "Everything's tight," John adds; "...the sound is crushing, the drums are amazing."
Additionally, Dying Fetus announced a series of special South American shows set to take place in mid-January. The band has also been confirmed for next year's prestigious Maryland Deathfest and France's Hellfest. Upcoming tour dates are as follows:
January 11 Buenos Aires, Argentina @ Asbury Bar
January 12 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil @ Underground Cultural
January 13 Recife, Brazil @ Burburinho Bar
January 14 São Paulo, Brazil @ Manifesto Bar
January 15 Santiago, Chile @ Club 334

Spanish black metallers Spellcraft have inked a deal with Xtreem Music for the release of their sophomore album entitled "Yersinia Pestis," excepted to drop in Spring, 2012. Xtreem Music commented:
"Formed back in 1996 and actually sharing of 4 out of the 5 members of the current Ouija line-up, Spellcraft has been gaining a strong reputation within the Spanish Black Metal scene not only with their three demos between '97 & '07, but also with their 1st album 'Stirpe Obscura' in 2008. Their high-class brand of black with melodic death touches influenced by bands like MORK GRYNING, early SATYRICON, DISSECTION, SACRAMENTUM is reaching its most supreme expression on this magnificent album of an astonishing production and outstanding compositions.
"'Yersinis Pestis' is completely recorded and only a few details on the overall design are being finished until its release in spring 2012. In the meantime, you can listen to 2 exclusive advance songs at the band's official MySpace site at this location."

A few weeks ago, the Rorcal guys and Solar Flare (side-project from Impure Wilhemina) locked themselves for three days in a humid basement (Rorcal's practice room actually) to write and record a collaborative track sounding as heavy as it could be with 2 basses and 3 guitars supported by drums and vocals from Mordor. All has been mastered again by Raph Bovey who produced "Heliogabalus" album last year, and they might be even close to making an Uruk-hai cry for mercy. The band's publicist issued the following press release:
"As concept and guideline, the two entities found inspiration in the poem 'La Ronde sous la Cloche,' taken from the book 'Gaspard de la Nuit,' written by the french poet Aloysius Bertrand… although the legend says that this book was probably written by the devil himself. His text drags you into a world between nightmare, hallucination and darkness which we tried to reproduce musicaly.
"The release is presented in a very limited handmade digifile CDr (only 200 copies) format featuring tracks from Solar Flare and the collaborative song. Exclusively available on Call of Ror label's eshop and for entire streaming on SoundCloud."
Dirge Within has posted a video clip introducing new guitarist Chuck Wepfer, which can be viewed below. The band also commented:

Portland, Oregon doom-gazers Megaton Leviathan, who completed a successful run of tour dates with cerebral black metal behemoths Wolves In The Throne Room this summer, are set to begin work on their as-yet-untitled new full-length. The record, which includes a “smacked-out version of Judas Priest’s ‘Here Come The Tears,’” according to the band, will be unleashed during the latter half of 2012.
Further comments vocalist/guitarist Andrew Costa on the direction of the new material: “The new tunes are dark but still retain the trademark Megaton Leviathan hooks and dreamy atmosphere fans have come to expect from us. It’s a transmutation of a lot of my personal experiences in Alaska as well as our recent trials and tribulations as a young band. It will be delivered in a way most everyone can identify with.”
The band is also working on a split release with L.A. noise band Actuary, with further details to be unveiled soon. In addition, the eclectic ensemble will kick off the new year with a short string of West Coast headlining dates. Shows are as follows:

Lou Reed says that Metallica fans have threatened to shoot him after the sour reaction to their "Lulu" collaboration (reviewed here). Reed told USA Today that the metal fans "are threatening to shoot me, and that's only because I showed up." "They haven't even heard the record yet, and they're recommending various forms of torture and death," he added.
The negative response to "Lulu" does not concern Reed:
"I don't have any fans left," he says. "After Metal Machine Music (1975), they all fled. Who cares? I'm essentially in this for the fun of it."
Lars Ulrich leapt to the defence of the singer:
"This is something they've never heard. Nobody hears rhythms or delivers poetry the way Lou does. It's not for everyone, but I think it's a fantastic record."
Reed called Metallica his "metal blood brothers," and even hinted that there could be more from the collaboration if he gets his way. "No-one wants 'Lulu Part 2', but on Radio Lou, in my head where I hear these songs, I want more of it," he said.
Germany's Lanfear has inked a deal with Pure Steel Records, and the band issued the following statement about the signing:
"Todays' music scene has not really that much to do with music. Labels don't search for high quality bands but chase trends to get a share of the decreasing pie. As a band who has been part of the scene for many years it's ridiculous to see how people try to puff hot air to something it will never be. Music is art, most people seem to forget about that!
"From the start our new label constantly bucked this trend with success. They attach importance on music instead of jumping on bandwagons. With our sixth album 'This Harmonic Consonance' we are now a proud part of the family and really look forward to a hopefully long cooperation."
Pure Steel Records also commented:
"We had an eye on the German veterans Lanfear since they started and we are very proud to welcome such a name on our label. Lanfear are known to give nothing about any trends. From start they did their own thing without looking to the right or left. Therefore, the band is obviously fitting very good to our label group. It’s not necessary to mention that Lanfear are outstanding musicians and the new album is going to be an absolute killer….Welcome guys!"
