The organizers of the upcoming 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise have issued the following announcement about confirming Pretty Maids for the floating festival:
"It's getting to be winter up there in the Baltics. The days are getting shorter and you have to wait long periods to see the sun. Tired of waiting in Finland, they sailed over to Denmark. After they passed through the Great Belt they made a short stop in the city of Horsens. They should have gone there earlier, because you know what they found? Some really PRETTY MAIDS! Full steam ahead through the Skagerrak!
"Make no mistake, 70000TONS OF METAL is not your grandma's cruise. It's also not one of the cruises that share the ship with normal cruise guests. This is an all heavy metal cruise! Can you imagine that? A whole luxury cruise ship full of metalheads? And since there is no backstage area you will have the opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. It's like everyone has a backstage pass!
"70000TONS OF METAL will sail Monday, January 23, 2012 aboard the Royal Caribbean “Majesty of the Seas” from Miami FL to George Town, Cayman Islands and will not return you to the real world for four days until Friday, January 27, 2012."

Heavy rock trio Black Skies recently returned from a 16-date North American tour. Commented the band in a collective statement:
“Thanks a ton to MAKE & Vaz for joining us on parts of this last run. Getting to play with bands you enjoy not only musically, but also as people really makes the whole experience that much better. Thanks also to all the venues, promoters, and other bands for helping make this such an enjoyable time. Thanks to Mother Nature for being cooperative and allowing us and our friends to travel safely. Most importantly, thanks to all of those who came to the shows and supported us by buying merch, giving us places to stay, etc. You are the reason we can do this.
"This was the last tour we’ll be doing for a while, as we plan to take a break from touring over the next several months to focus on writing and other obligations not related to the band. With that in mind, having a good trip before this break was something very important to us, so thanks again to everyone who made it possible. We’ll see you soon with new songs. Until then, take care and be good to each other!”

After nearly four years without a new release, ambidextrous sludge purveyors Samothrace were in Soundhouse Studios in their hometown of Seattle with producer Brandon Fitzsimmons (ex-Wormwood) to being the recording of their second LP.
Samothrace issued the following collective statement about the recording process: “Working on this album at Soundhouse Studios with Brandon Fitzsimmons is amazing. We were fortunate enough to use the Rolls Royce of analog tape machines. The sound of rolling thunder was an inspiration during the whole process. The songs are as soaring and turbulent as the last album, but a bit more mature. We can’t wait for its release and imminent touring to follow.”
The LP will tentatively bear two side-long tracks, “When We Emerged” and “A Horse Of Our Own.” The hymn “When We Emerged” originally appeared on the band’s 2007 demo in a much shorter and raw form, and has here been completely reworked and extended into a new song.
The album — its title still TBA — will be released by mid-2012 via 20 Buck Spin, who also released Samothrace's 2008 debut full-length, "Life’s Trade." More info on the new album will be available in the coming weeks. More...

Valkyrja has checked in with the following road report and statement about canceling the band's Rites of Darkness festival appearance:
"Since the 5th of December, Valkyrja no longer shares space with Vader, Gorgoroth and the Massive Music crew. The gig in Athens marked our last date under this flag and we salute our new allies as well as our old brothers in arms. D.G. and Thelberg for peerless executions, Massive Music and all their unmatched associates, devoted ones from the many crowds, whose immense energies fed the many fires, and all who drank with us from the grail of the nightside during our venture. Only one gig remains of 'The Final Contamination,' this being the attendance at Eindhoven Metal Meeting. The last nail is about to taste the hammer...
"As the live gallery is about to be expanded with visuals from the past assaults, we ask for your participation. If you have media, in any form, contact us for your contribution.
"As several other bands, Valkyrja has been forced to cancel the Rites of Darkness Festival in Texas. Thanks to Dani and all the other involved parts, we refused 10 additional European shows of the VADER/GORGOROTH/VALKYRJA tour in order to make it to their - so called - event. We've heard excuse after excuse, but there are no longer any possibilities for us to make our arrangements in time. Let it be known: this is ONLY their fault and we hold them responsible in every single way!
"The 'Contamination' vinyl will be delayed due to a fire at the printing factory. Only a handful of surviving copies remain. More details to follow... More...

The band commented on the album: "Circus Black is the most impressive AD album so far. Musically it represents the most sophisticated and most symphonic edge of AD-music. There’s more diversity on this album than never before. This is the first time we used a real choir and we gathered some really excellent professional opera singers together to be able to achieve the best sounding choir possible. This choir was conducted by Mikko P. Mustonen from Pathos Music. He also arranged the choir and orchestral parts. We managed once again to get some world-class guests on this album. So, the production is our biggest so far and the final polish on this album was given by Teropekka Virtanen (mixing engineer) and Mika Jussila (mastering engineer) at legendary Finnvox Studios in Finland."
