An Interview With The Atlas Moth

Chicago's The Atlas Moth mixes the harsh tonalities of sludge metal with the layered synth work of early-era Pink Floyd to create a gritty psychedelic sound that is quite unlike anything out in modern-day metal. I had a chance to speak to guitarist/vocalist Steve before a recent show in New Brunswick, NJ about their new album, "A Glorified Piece Of Blue Sky," the advantage of having synthesizers and three guitarists in the band, his love of Pink Floyd, and much more. Marduk Fans Pepper-Sprayed?

The Gauntlet reports that fans at a Marduk show were pepper-sprayed by an overzealous security guard at Royal Hall in Los Angeles. Halfway through Marduk's set, a fan began trying to set a bible on fire inside the club. When venue security was alerted, they pepper-sprayed the fan. As everyone knows, the tiny spray droplets from the spray spread out, and more than just the intended target were hit. Soon after, Marduk left the stage, and the choking fans exited the area for about ten minutes while the venue cleared out. Marduk later re-took the stage, but the band was not happy with security for the way things were handled.

"What you see here, is the new drummer in Sahg. As you probably understand, we had serious doubts about hiring this lunatic. His name is Thomas Lönnheim, and he has brought a whole new groove to the table, as you will hear on the new album which is now in the making. Sahg is currently recording their third album. At the time of this update, nine new songs are being taped down for the new album, due for release on Indie Recordings early next year. Things are running smoothly in the studio, and the sessions so far have been very promising! The album is being produced by Herbrand Larsen, assisted by Ice Dale, both members of Bergen metallers Enslaved."

Extreme O.D. Parts With Vocalist

Extreme O.D. has issued the following update about parting ways with their vocalist:

"As some of you may already know Mitch Russell (our vocalist) has officially quit. This news came to us suddenly & without notice just hours before our gig in Coventry. We will get a vocal replacement and will come back stronger than ever in 2010.

"The vocal position is currently completely open so if anyone wants to try out for the band please get in touch ASAP. We will be starting auditions shortly. This Thursday's gig in Bangor will unfortunately have to be canceled. We are getting some XOD friends in to keep us going and all will be fine for the Kyzer's gig in Stoke this Saturday. Cheers dudes, see you soon"

Madball Tears Apart The Croft In Bristol

When going through the list of legends in the Hardcore genre, several bands immediately come to mind. Bad Brains, Black Flag, Agnostic Front and Sick Of It All are just a few that are instantly mentioned, but half the time, people forget to mention Madball, the band formed twenty years ago by Agnostic Front singer Roger Miret and his younger brother Freddy Cricien. To be honest, there is absolutely no reason to forget Madball. They have written some of the best songs in their genre and bring a huge amount of intensity and energy with them wherever they go. So getting to see the legends live for the first time was not only alot of fun, but a real treat.

The band took to the stage at The Croft in Bristol and opened with the classic song, "Set It Off." As soon as the band started playing, the crowd exploded. Moshing, stage diving, pogoing and singing along to almost every word, a great atmosphere to have. Madball continued to perform with an unrivaled passion and drive, playing some of their more recent (and equally outstanding songs) such as "Heavenhell" and "Infiltrate The System" and every single person in the crowd loved every second of it. So did the band and they thanked the audience numerous times throughout the night for the support, Cricien held the mic out for members of the audience to sing along and engaged in the Great British dialect by calling someone a "fucking wanker." They finished with the song, "Pride" from the 1996 album, "Demonstrating My Style," to a great response. As I said before, this was my first Madball show and it certainly won't be my last!

All Ends Issues Studio Update

Swedish metal band All Ends has issued the following recording updates:

"We started this day with some great breakfast and a long chat, then of for some sound and mic check. The girls did some tryouts until the right mic turned up. Feels really good, gonna be really fun to record the vocals for this record, the lyrics together with the songs is well produced from the beginning so the big work is how to get the right feeling and dynamic over all.."

"Guitars ready and done... Fredrik played with love, heart and soul, but on the other hand he was pretty sober the whole time. As i told you before, Fredrik used alot of different guitars and amps then before ex Fender Stratocaster -67, Gibson, Fender Tele. and alot of different amps, so you can just imagine the new sound. The new songs demands the best sound and guitar for that particular song. So all the try-outs was worth the hard work."

After his passing, countless tributes were given in his honor in the form of concerts, cover songs and personal statements from friends and fellow musicians. To add to the long list of tributes, Metal Hammer Magazine’s 200th issue being released on December 16 will include a “Dimebag” Darrell tribute album. The Haunted Re-Signs to Century Media Records

Swedish thrashers THE HAUNTED have announced signing a new worldwide deal with Century Media Records after a successful partnership for the band’s stunning three last albums (“rEVOLVEr”, “The Dead Eye”, “Versus”).

THE HAUNTED’s Peter Dolving (vocals) comments, "So once again we've decided to sign with Century Media Records. It feels good to get continuation, and truly having worked hard on communication on both ends over these last years, has brought us together in ways that I believe a lot of bands/managements/labels only dream of. Long term goals, open agendas, and a Norse/German stubborn attitude seem so be something we find a mutual trust and strength in and we're really looking forward to a continued cooperation with our friends/partners at Century Media. It is a strange thing this, the business of music, but like everything else, it seems to come down to hard work, earnestness, straight talk and respect. So here's to many more years of churning out metal to the masses. Peace!"

Beyond Terror Beyond Grace Readies New Album

NSW-based grind/death metal band Beyond Terror Beyond Grace will release their latest album, “Our Ashes Built Mountains,” on February 4, 2010. The band has just uploaded two tracks off the album. Check out “Husk” and “Flightless” at the band's MySpace page.

The album features a number of guests including Jasion Peppiatt (Psycroptic), Jarrod Krafcyk (ex The Amenta), Alex Pope (Ruins), Blake Wilson (Gallows for Grace), Anno Vo (Crux) as well as soundscapes by Tim Pope from The Amenta. The album art was by Colin Marks who has worked for Aborted, Strapping Young Lad, Whitechapel etc.

The band commented: “We are beyond happy with the results, and we feel that to say that this CD is an enormous step up musically, in production, lyrically and conceptually from the last album is a bit of an understatement. We have really made an effort to craft a complete album rather than just throwing a bunch of songs together – there are lyrical concepts, samples, ideas and motifs that thematically link throughout the whole CD. We are very much looking forward to getting it out there.”

International tour dates and label announcements are still to come.

Zemial To Stop Playing Live Shows

Zemial front man Vorskaath has issued the following announcement about tentatively ending all plans to play live shows:

"After some years of touring and presenting the music of Zemial live, I have come to tentatively decide that our show at the Hells Pleasure festival this past July 2009 was the last Zemial show for the foreseeable future. Embracing everything that change signifies, I rarely make such unexceptional statements; hence I would caution you that this is subject to change when and if the conditions are ripe.

"What I have with certainty decided, is that a return to the stage would only be plausible from my side if I am to find a line-up of musicians above the ‘norm’ standard found in metal, who are technically able and willing to push the borders of this music style. I find no interest in playing Zemial’s music without offering any new musical explorations and resting upon any reputation we may have developed as a live band. My waning concern in presenting something with Zemial requires a kindling of the sort that only comes from change and from that which is new.

"The album NYKTA is still heavily under consideration and a sample of the album will be uploaded on this page presently. Beyond that album, I will either breathe life into this music style with something new and oppose the ‘standards’ or put Zemial to rest. I will continue recording for various bands, (metal and otherwise) focus on my other music projects and bring Alpha Centauri back to life and activity. If Zemial remain is something to be seen. All this, in search of connecting with Music. Music – the gift of the Gods and nothing less – remains paramount in my priorities. More...

Disillusion Parts Ways With Guitarist

Vocalist Andy Schmidt of Germany's Disillusion has issued the following announcement about parting ways with guitarist Rajk Barthel:

"After 10 years on a common path with Disillusion our musical ways are separating today. Both allowed this decision a lot of time, trying restarts for almost two years and seeking any chance to continue to work together.

"Rajk and I have met back in 1998 in windy November Leipzig, constantly being fond of one another, starting to work on music and the formation of the band only a week later. However, now that some dreams of that time have come true and others are in the reach, a split is important and right – to keep on going and to continue to feel at home in one’s artistic harbor, without wallowing in memories.

"The shared years in the band have been all, impressive, beautiful, euphoric, sad, a real test and catastrophe, humanly not always easy, but there was always clarification; a struggle, joy about reached goals, common growing into too big shoes, common defeat and always honest and friendly.

"And yet we have lost the way how to make music together comfortably. It is not possible anymore. I regret that very much, but I am also filled with joy to know that Rajk will stay very close to the band in form of a Booker, Manager … but these terms don’t really apply. On that note, hoping for a sincere collaboration on the things to come! Rajk will not be replaced by a new guitar player for the upcoming live shows in 2010. More about Live 2010 this evening!"

Tales From The Pit: The Moshing Bassist

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Guilt By Association bassist Britt shares one with us:

"I was on tour with my band Guilt by Association and we played a show at the Monkey Bar in Huntington, WV. We were mid set and it was really hot on stage. The riser puts you up really close to the lights and I needed a break from the heat. My guitarist and I ran off stage and started playing in the middle of the pit! He had a solo coming up so he only stayed a minute and then returned to the stage. Maybe the people in the pit thought I ran out too cause right then they all started moshing again instead of just circling around. I wasn't gonna be trampled so I pushed back and rocked out with the fans and right before I made it back to the stage this guy ran into me and I split his eye open with the headstock of my bass! He kept moshing and took his shirt off the stop the bleeding! After the show we were signing autographs at the merch table and I figured he'd be long gone but I looked up and there he was. He said 'I have to shake you hand and tell you you fuckin rock.... now I'm gonna go get some stitches!' He was die hard... it was awesome!"

Guilt By Association recently announced in an interview with Metalunderground that they are in pre-production for their upcoming EP "Chapter 2." Sample tracks from their first EP "Chapter 1" can be heard at the band's MySpace page.
