Over a decade-plus career, New Jersey six-piece Ill Niño has achieved an impressive but underappreciated feat: escaped the Great Nu-Metal Collapse of 2003 relatively unscathed, and plowed ahead with a string of albums that explored, one by one, every corner of the band’s musical and cultural identity. Following a split with Roadrunner Records and a humble stint on the short-lived indie label Cement Shoes, Ill Niño released the fiery “Dead New World” in 2010 through Victory Records. The album encapsulated all the band’s prior adventures – groove, alternative, thrash, metalcore, and progressive – while replanting its signature Latin and tribal roots.
Brazilian-born vocalist and lyricist Cristian Machado spent his early childhood in Venezuela before moving to New Jersey as an adolescent, and so takes a broad, inclusive cultural view of heavy music – and questions the ways in which the genre and its subgenres are typically understood. This thirst for identity has never been more apparent than on “Epidemia,” Ill Niño’s newly released sixth album and next step in its partnership with Victory.
I recently seized the opportunity to phone Cristian on a day off from touring. I explored his thoughts on “Epidemia” and Ill Niño at large, his various outlooks on music, artistry, life, and much more – leaving no stone unturned. More...
"Axis Of The Underground Volume 2 will treat your eardrums to the thrashiest of metal, heinous black metal, putrid death metal, empowering traditional metal, methodical doom metal, boundary pushing progressive metal, the grooviest of groove metal, avant-garde madness, and bouncy folk metal among many other genres and incarnations of heavy sounds.
"We’ve loaded our heavy metal shotgun and are discharging the most comprehensive of compilations to satisfy even the pickiest of nay-sayers and nitpickers. Axis Of The Underground is our way to give back to the genre that has brought all of us years and years of elation and enjoyment. So sit back, crack a cold one, or roll a herbal cigarette and hit play on the bandcamp player below, and be prepared to be whisked away to a heavy metal nirvana. "

During the Summer of 2010 as Endwell was recording "Punishment," the band decided to revisit the songs that began this new chapter of its career. One of only two songs songs from the "Revenge Is A Healthy Motive" EP that had not been re-recorded was "Sympathy For All Sufferers," the closing track of the release.
After deciding it would be best to leave the re-recorded version of "Sympathy For All Sufferers" off of "Punishment," the song was set aside. Now two years later, core Endwell members Sean Murphy and Danny Pupplo have mastered the track themselves in between writing and demoing of new material. Finntroll has officially started recording a 6th album at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki. The currently untitled follow-up to 2010's "Nifelvind" (reviewed here) will be released worldwide through Century Media Records in late March, 2013. In regards to this new album, the band comments via a studio blog:
"Combining our trademark sound with even more influences from non- traditional genres in metal music, we have created 11 songs which show you everything we want to offer. And boy, wasn't that one of the hardest tasks for some time. After all, how do you keep your sound fresh, yet familiar, after 6 albums and 15 years?
"At some point, we were afraid that the songs are not melodic enough. Then we started to fear they became too melodic. Then we let the songs rest for a while and molded them more in a way that the non-melodic stuff got something to hum with, and the cheesy pop songs were arranged more stripped and aggressive. We were confident, yet sometimes scared what will people think of the stuff we've been doing so hard. What if they hate it? That would be fine, but if they would hate it because the material was uninspiring, boring and done-to-death, that would be a huge disappointment. So, we kept pushing and tried to keep it fresh all the time, while still having the 'this has to be FINNTROLL because no other band sounds this insane' - grinning going on."
Affiance has premiered a new music video online for "The Cynic," which can be viewed below, and the band's new album "The Campaign" is out now. Dutch death metallers Centurian have revealed the cover art and track listing for their new album "Contra Rationem." Listenable Records commented:
"Contra Rationem is an adversive record in the broadest sense of the word. It lacks all the ethics of contemporary productions, leaving only the dynamic range of decay and rats exploring your skeleton. Through the rattle of bones...One might even hear flesh on instruments. We keep our death metal under-produced. All songs were nailed with conviction, without hesitation. In one take. Guided only by tongues of fire descending upon our heads. Uncorrected. As real as we are not."

"To explain exactly why is too much to tell, but to keep a long story short is that the promoter did not keep promises made to us and because of this we no longer can trust this person or are willing to co-operate with him any longer. We did give him a chance until today but still there were many things unclear and promises broken. Next to our passion for the death metal we play we also are a professional band and under these circumstances we are not able to give you, our fans, the show they deserve to see and experience for their hard earned money.
