Britain's latest and finest metal exports Sylosis have hordes of fans to gain on their maiden American tour, and - being real men - are not letting injuries or other such bollocks get in their way. In support of their recent sophomore effort "Edge Of The Earth," Sylosis have hit these shores in the coveted opening slot on As I Lay Dying's widespread "Decade Of Destruction" tour. While still gaining their true footing, the band are sure to win a loyal audience with their towering progressive death/thrash formula, which blends the old school with the modern without apparent effort.
In a cramped dressing room at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts (with the bloody racket of support act The Ghost Inside piercing the walls), I checked in with Sylosis' rhythm section, consisting of bassist Carl Parnell and drummer Rob Callard. Young touring guitarist Brandon Ellis - previously seen on stage with Arsis - was also silently present, having filled in for injured axeman Alex Bailey. More...

Every week we catch up with metal fans and band members to find their most brutal and memorable pit stories from live shows. This week guitarist Rick Jimenez from This is Hell shares the following recounting of losing half a tongue but still catching the end of the show:
In 2000 I was at an On The Rise (Mike Gallo from Agnostic Front's first band) show. A NJ band called Redline was playing and were covering "Reign in Blood." I was thinking "everyone does the intro and then goes into their own song all the time, whatever," but after the intro they kept going with it and I got extremely psyched. Everyone moshing was about 7 feet and 300 pounds and I was only 19 and about 100 pounds and 4 feet tall so I'm thinking there is no way I'm going to get in on the mosh.
Once the chug breakdown came though I couldn't contain myself anymore so I get out and start doing 2000 NY mosh... about 10 seconds later I'm about 20 feet from where I first started, on the ground, half my tongue on the ground. Mike helped me up and brought me to the bathroom... then someone else came in and handed me the rest of my tongue in a cup of ice. I was driven to the hospital, had my tongue sewed back together and got back to the show in time to see On The Rise. Casualty of the core.
This is Hell released the new album "Black Mass" (reviewed here) earlier this year, and you can check out the band's music by heading over here. Metalunderground.com also spoke with Rick Jimenez last month about the album, with the full interview available at this location.
Check back in next Tuesday as we continue to share more mosh pit stories from metal shows.

With the end of the recording sessions in sight for Dead Trooper, front man and guitarist Morten Müller revealed a little information about what to expect from the Norwegian thrashers sophomore full-length album:
“We’re recording 13 tracks, and we expect to use 9 of those on the album, but obviously we’ll make our minds up exactly how many, and which ones, once we’ve finished the whole process. We’ve taken a much more organic approach than the one we took with our first full-length album 'Cynicist,' and we’re aiming at injecting a lot more of the energy that you find in our live performances into the new one."
Formed in 2002 in Oslo by Morten Müller and Birger Larsen together with then members Are Sorknes and Andreas Paulsen, Dead Trooper has since released two EPs as well as the debut album “Cynicist” which appeared in 2009. Dead Trooper has regularly played live, bringing its brand of what the band describes as “groovy, aggressive thrash metal” not only to audiences in their native Norway but also as far afield as South America.
“There was a point,” says Müller, “when we had gone through the usual line up changes that bands go through in their attempt to find the perfect line up, when I was almost tempted to wind the whole thing up, but then in 2008 the most incredible drummer in the shape of Jon Eirik Bokn came into the band’s life. His skills are matched by his larger than life personality, and his arrival brought a whole new enthusiasm and creativity to DEAD TROOPER. He was followed into the band by 1349, DEN SAAKALDTE and PANTHEON I bass player Tor R. Stavenes, who brought his own unique take on things, and we knew at that point that we had a good mix. We are very happy to say that this enthusiasm and creativity has remained unabated since their arrival."
The video below shows Dead Trooper playing the track “Inner Riot” from the 2010 EP “Sickening” live in Oslo. More...

Rob Cavestany, guitarist of the veteran West Coast thrash metal act Death Angel, has issued the following statement in anticipation of the band’s upcoming U.S. run with Anthrax and Testament:
“We are beyond ecstatic that Death Angel has been invited to join our friends Anthrax and Testament once again for the second leg of this tour! More shows, more fun, more THRASH! The first leg was amazing and we expect no less on this next run. This line up is the best we've ever been part of as far as touring the States goes. Every band brings their 'A' game each night, no doubt! Plus, we usually do our own headline shows on days off from the main tour, so very much looking forward to performing our long set to our fans across the country as well. What a fantastic way to kick off 2012! We have an extremely busy year planned and it's certain to begin with a BLAST! See you on the road, at the bar and in the pit!”

After two years of aggressive touring that saw the group perform alongside Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, Exodus, Toxic Holocaust, 3 Inches of Blood and more, the Los Angeles quintet Holy Grail will soon enter the studio to record the follow-up to "Crisis In Utopia."
In the meantime, the band will release a holiday-themed 7-inch, "Seasons Bleedings," which is available now for pre-order. Limited to 500 copies (250 red, 250 green), the release -- which will be available digitally on December 6th and ship to customers shortly thereafter -- includes covers of King Diamond's "No Presents For Christmas" and the Rainbow classic "Kill The King," and features artwork by Sam Turner (3 Inches of Blood). This marks the first time that guitarist Alex Lee (ex-Bonded By Blood), who joined Holy Grail in the spring, has recorded with the group. Pre-order "Seasons Bleedings" at this location.
The digital version of "Seasons Bleedings" will also include covers of Judas Priest's "Exciter" and Accept's "Fast As A Shark," both of which originally appeared on the group's out-of-print debut EP "Improper Burial."
Vocalist James Paul Luna commented: "Back when we first talked about doing a Christmas 7-inch, the first song that came to mind was 'No Presents for Christmas,' so I'm pretty happy to see that came to fruition. Eli was listening to lots of Rainbow at the time, so naturally 'Kill The King' was our immediate second choice. Even though these versions can't out-do the legendary originals by King and Dio, I feel pretty happy and excited to see this released on vinyl."
Guitarist Eli Santana added: "It was pretty rad, because after all the touring we've done the past year, we got to get back into recording mode and test the waters, plus have fun with it, before settling down to work on the album." More...

Label head and vocalist/guitarist of Suicidal Bride Records band All Else Fails commented on holding a release party at a strip club rather than the norm of a concert venue: "Watch metal 'rip in a whole new way, no pun intended. I have many reasons for choosing the listening party at Eden. Mainly for the reason that we were just looking for something fun and different for the metal head fans of the label and bands on the compilation plus we think getting a lap dance or two to a ripping metal track is pretty memorable plus my sister works there so I get to make it a family function lol."

Dubai may be known as a city rich in history, a business hub and the home of the tallest structure in the world, but it’s also the birthplace of one of the first death metal bands to come out of the Middle East, Nephelium. Now residing and re-establishing itself in Toronto, Canada over the last 10 years, the band has announced the official release date of the debut album "Coils of Entropy" on February 7th, 2012.
Nephelium co-founder and drummer Alan Madhavan comments, "From the scorching heat of the Arabian deserts to the blistering cold of what we now call home, this debut album has literally and figuratively come a long way. The aged yet modern style of death metal with a subtle integration of Middle Eastern melodies is a perfect musical collaboration of our minds and souls. A ferocious ride with concepts and lyrical themes written around the observations of an entity witnessing the world and its demise through different eras and music that creeps up the caverns of your brain, be ready for a hybrid onslaught of technical mastery and bloodcurdling brutality. We firmly believe that it was well worth the wait but don’t take our word for it, give it a spin and determine that for yourselves. However, don’t cry when your speakers demolish your insides…you were warned…"
Samples from Nephelium's six-track album are available via Bandcamp. The track listing is as follows:
1. Burial Ground 05:04
2. Merciless Annihilation 06:18
3. Hellborne 05:02

Alesana, fresh off the “Rock Yourself To Sleep” tour, has unveiled a music video for the song "Lullaby Of The Crucified" from the group's new album "A Place Where The Sun Is Silent," out now on Epitaph Records. The record was inspired by the preeminent 14th century poem Dante's Inferno, a dramatic accounting of one man's decent into hell. Check out the video below.
Alesana’s singer Shawn Milke explains, "We are very excited to present to you our latest short film entitled, 'Lullaby of the Crucified.' Once again, thanks in large part to the inventive mind of director Stephen Penta, we unveil for you a visual interpretation of one of our literature infused ballads. Press play and wander into a place where the virtuous hide in fear, a place where the sun is silent...lose yourself in the maze of mirrors that is, Alesana."
The video pays homage to Dante’s poem and like in the literary work, a disoriented young man wakes in the woods, and assailed by beasts, (a stripper temptress, the manipulative fiend, forbidden fruit) he fails to reach salvation. In this modernized version, young Dante visits a road side strip club and a cheap motel.
Video’s director Stephen Penta offers, “The challenge of doing videos with Alesana is that Shawn and Dennis write novel length theatrical stories rooted in literary works as the themes of their albums and then strive to capture that with the band’s visuals. When we started discussing the project, Shawn sent me the long form version of the 'A Place Where the Sun Is Silent,' short story. He explained how it was rooted in the Purgatory section of Dante’s Inferno and broke down the characters and how he pictured the wanderer moving through these fantastic rooms from one adventure to the next… well, it was overwhelming.” More...
Betraying the Martyrs, a French deathcore act with some surprising progressive flourishes, is currently making its mark on the U.S. and picking up new fans touring alongside Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, and Carnifex. Shortly after arriving in the U.S. and only a handful of days into the tour, an unfortunately sick band front man Aaron Matts spoke with me about the new album and current run of shows. Below you can find a transcript of our conversation, in which Aaron reveals the band will be shooting an upcoming third music video, discusses the difference between the French and American metal scenes, and shares his love for Born of Osiris.
