The Hangar was packed for the return of GWAR on the “Return of the Maggot” Tour. The terrible incident that GWAR had been through hung in the air with curiosity about what exactly the show would be like. However, that did not stop the reveling mass from enjoying the other bands. More...
San Diego's As I Lay Dying hardly need an introduction by now. On the heels of their new compilation release "Decas," these titans of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal have now launched their milestone "Decade Of Destruction" tour. The ten prolific years under their belt have seen As I Lay Dying grow from humble underground metalcore origins into a major modern extreme metal force and a Grammy-nominated, bestselling music group.
I crossed paths with the band on the fourth date of "Decade Of Destruction" at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts. Prior to showtime, I rendezvoused with drummer Jordan Mancino, who - together with frontman and bandleader Tim Lambesis - founded As I Lay Dying at the turn of the century. He reflected on his group's progress and accomplishments to date, the current tour, and plenty more, including hints of some exciting news for fans in 2012. More...
British thrash metal veterans Onslaught have confirmed that Desecration drummer Mic Hourihan, (also formerly of Extreme Noise Terror,) has joined the band on a permanent basis, replacing founding member Steve Grice, who left the band in March of this year, shortly after the release of the groups fifth studio album, "Sounds Of Violence." Despite joining Onslaught, Hourihan will continue to be a member of Desecration.
Onslaught bassist Jeff Williams comments: "I have to say I am so fucking happy to have Mic playing full time in Onslaught. Not only is he a really cool guy and a real pleasure to spend time with, but also without doubt the finest drummer that I have ever had the pleasure to play along side, everyone who came along to the Scream For Violence European, UK, Ireland or South American tours and saw Mic in action will certainly testify to this, the guy is a fucking machine! The Onslaught lineup is so powerful, focused and harmonious right now and the new album is going to completely fucking destroy! Bring it on!"
Mic Hourihan comments: "Its such a pleasure to be part of Onslaught, I am so looking forward to making the next record and of course all the touring that comes with being in such a great band!"
On November 26th, 2011, I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt DiFabio of the metal band Single Bullet Theory. The band recently released their fourth album entitled "IV" through Goomba Records (read the review here.) Matt discussed the band's history, their latest album, his song writing process, and gives advice to aspiring musicians. I hope everyone enjoys his responses and picks up their latest album, "IV." After a hugely successful first run, Anthrax, Testament and Death Angel have announced additional tour dates. The second leg of the tour kicks off in Las Vegas on Sunday, January 22 and includes fifteen cities over a three-week period. This trek follows the thrash titan's five-week Fall tour that comprised cities from Philadelphia to Los Angeles. Anthrax will once again close each show, while Death Angel will open.
"The first leg of the tour with Testament and Death Angel was an amazing way to end a great year for Anthrax," said Anthrax's Scott Ian, "and it went above and beyond my expectations! Sold out shows, raging crowds and EPIC war dances! So we figured what better way to start 2012 than to continue this thrash-fest into the new year!!! Thank you all for giving us this privilege to come and play for you. See you soon!"
The return of Belladonna and Anthrax's remarkable renewal began in 2009 in a Cleveland hotel bar with Anthrax's Benante and Ian, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich when he first brought up the idea of The Big Four - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, the four bands that served as the original architects for the "thrash/speed-metal" scene," yet had never shared the same stage before. The first of (so far) fourteen Big Four events took place on June 16, 2010, culminating in what was Anthrax's New York homecoming concert - The Big Four at Yankee Stadium on September 14, 2011, the day after Worship Music hit stores. "We came into The Big Four as the underdog," said Benante. "We were the band that had the most to prove, and we've worked really, really hard to do that."

Co-headliners Unearth and Chimaira, two bastions of the breakdown, threw down a modern-metal clinic at Emo’s East in Austin, Texas. Molotov Solution, a promising newcomer to Metal Blade Records, opened the show in fitting ground-and-pound deathcore fashion. Skeletonwitch seemed the odd man out, although their searing blend of blackened thrash proved a needed diversity. The package came sealed with a black licorice-tasting inebriation courtesy of Jägermeister music. More...

Here's the update from Reznor on NIN.com:
For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus that I am happy to announce is available for pre-order right now for as low as $11.99. The full release will be available in one week - December 9th.
The soundtrack is available in several formats: regular and high quality digital downloads, released December 9, a triple CD released December 27, and a deluxe package that will ship February 6. The deluxe version features six LPs, a book, a fold-out poster, and a USB drive shaped like a razor blade and it is signed by Reznor and Ross.
The download is up for pre-order on iTunes now. Those pre-orders get their cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" (featuring Karen O) instantaneously. Also, iTunes is streaming an eight-minute trailer for the film.

Toronto is located in the South Eastern part of the province of Ontario, five hours east of Montreal, Quebec and three hours away from Ottawa, Ontario. A fair comparison to use to describe Toronto would be as the poor man’s New York City: it is large, expansive and industrial (and emotionally cold) in feel, but extremely culturally diverse, and while there are great opportunities for people to spark their individual creativity, the pressure to conform is palatable. Toronto seems to primarily be an “indie rock” town, but in the past few years, hardcore bands such as Fucked Up and Cancer Bats have been making waves, and Protest The Hero started off in Whitby, a suburb outside of the city. There are a plethora of new metal bands in the GTA, and while they get little (if any) love by Toronto press – metal or otherwise, they are around, getting opening slots for the American and European metal and hardcore bands that come into town.
Sons of Otis
In terms of style, Toronto metal acts seem to prefer to emulate the NWBHM feel, while Quebec metal bands seem to be more technical and favor Black metal and /or grindcore styles. Toronto’s Sons of Otis stands out as being a trio of extremely proficient musicians who stand out from the pack with their unique take on metal. Their sound, which is categorized as psychedelic stoner/doom, is infused with American blues music, which adds a deep-in-your-belly groove and a soulfulness to their sound.
While the band has been kicking around since 1992 and has toured with bands like Electric Wizard and YOB and performed at the renowned Roadburn Festival in Holland in 2010, they have been lauded with critical acclaim, but for some reason commercial acclaim has been stymied by horrible record deals, lineup changes and in my opinion, a musically immature city where their uniqueness isn’t appreciated. While I’d heard of the band for a number of years, their opening set for Dark Castle and YOB this past July blew me away, and if I were in one of the bands performing that night, I would have been intimidated. Sheer power and heartfelt passion for their craft cannot be faked simply to win an audience over. These guys are the real deal.

Comments Ram: "Filming the video for Flame of the tyrants was a very cool and almost surreal experience, we filmed it in an abandoned sandquarell outside of Gothenburg. We wanted that Mad Max II feeling to it and I think we accomplished that. We had a great time on set and on behalf of RAM I would like to thank the Mad Ram gangers and everybody involved for making our vision come to life in such a brilliant manner!"
In other news Metal Blade Records announces that there will be a limited first edition of the European CD that will include a bonus DVD. Swiss act Cataract will be going on a hiatus in 2012. The band issued the following statement about the decision and upcoming activity:
"In the dark corners of Zurich, rumour is rife that Cataract will be playing their last show this December, last show? Ever? I mean, ever ever? Of course not. The Swiss powerhouse of metal, loud, hard and merciless, doesn't even think about turning around and moving on to a normal life. There's too much truth to be said, too many stages that need to be rocked and too many pits that need to mosh! The grain of truth in this rumour is that Catarct will go into an extended hibernation, as lead singer Fedi is leaving for a long planned and desired world trip for the whole of 2012.
"Plans not only include the rest of the boys kicking back and enjoying some time off themselves, but also writing new tracks to be recorded and released as soon as Fedi has returned in early 2013. The metal machinery will be working again and steamroll all over Europe!"
"However, before the activities are frozen and the guitars given some much owed time to rest, Cataract are honoured to play their final show for 2011/2012 at the legendary Abart club, which is due to close its doors next year. They will be supported by Lucerne's Silent Slander and Zurich's Beyond The Vortex, along with some other guests. And if you know the band, there will also be a bunch of surprises for everyone to enjoy – for example free admission to Abart's Maximum Kick Party on the same night! So, get up, dress up and show up for a night of good times!"

German Thrash legends Exumer announced that it has signed with Metal Blade Records. The band reformed in 2009, but will release the first album in 24 years in 2012 entitled "Fire & Damnation." The album will be the band's third LP and first since the 1987 release "Rising From The Sea." The band still features original vocalist/bassist Mem V. Stein and guitarist Ray Mensh.
Mem V. Stein had the following comments on the signing: “We are extremely happy and proud to have found a home with Metal Blade Records, a label that has the “know-how”, integrity and appreciation for what Exumer is about and stands for. We tried to do everything “right”, with this album, from writing the new material to working with Waldemar Sorychta as our producer. Hence, Metal Blade Records as a label is the most logical choice for the band, in order to be represented globally and reach every fan that is interested in what EXUMER has to offer in 2012, and beyond.”
Canadian act Gales of Avalon has posted the entire new "Black Island" album online, which can be heard via the band's Reverbnation page. Gales of Avalon also commented on the album's concept:
"The tale of Black Island is the story of two friends Seamus and Braeden, who board a ship set to sail to the new world. The ship is captained by a brash, cocky, and somewhat insane man, who had a story of his very own. The captains story is one of gold, riches, and great fortune on the elusive and mysterious Black Island. Although no one else has ever heard of, nor seen the island. The captain's promises of gold, riches, and fortune slowly turned into hunger, famine and madness. Soon the crew was beginning to think a mutiny was in order, and the captain was cast out into the sea. Seamus looked at Braeden and said that, 'Things will start to get better now' but they did not. The two friends looked up to the heavens only to see blackened clouds overhead. A deaf calm settled over the ship, and then the wind began to blow. A mighty gale was blowing the ship back and forth, over massive waves, and through treacherous ice, until finally she bottomed out on a rock in some shallow water. "Abandon ship!" is yelled all over the deck, as the sailors jump to their icy demise. More...
Mnemic has checked in with the following update about gearing up to enter the recording studio in February:
"With the release of last year's 'Sons of the System,' Danish modern metallers Mnemic have undergone quite a few changes. Keeping quiet, doing only select shows in 2010, the band never toured properly, and never discovered the demand for their style and music. Today, the band is praised and being recognized as part of the Djent music scene, a genre created by the polyrhythmic pioneers of metal, Meshuggah.
"After a turbulent period and a new line-up, the band is infused with a new set of energy and inspiration, in order to release a new album and ride the road again!
"The band will enter the Antfram Studios in February 2012 with longtime producer and good friend Tue Madsen to record their new and yet-untitled album. The release is set for June 2012, through Nuclear Blast Records.
"Watch this space, and see you all next year!"
