Columbus, Ohio, stoner rock band Lo-Pan has been trekking across the country as of late with High on Fire and Goatwhore, and being joined by Corrosion of Conformity for a few of those dates. But many metal heads have not heard much about this band; without vicious growls, crazy fast guitar riffs, and black band t-shirts, they haven't attracted much attention from typical metal listeners. They will not make any excuses for their post-rock, nineties-inspired sound, and will be exposed to a whole new audience full of new fans. I caught up with vocalist Jeff Martin and drummer Jesse Bartz to talk about the tour and the plethora of hotel desk bells that curiously lined their tour van's dashboard. More...

Finnish death metal act Pyuria has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's vocalist:
"Winds of change has gathered among us (for a change). We have bad news and good news. Bad news is, Matti Liuke had to focus on other things and couldn’t continue in Pyuria. When that decision came, we had booked live dates in 3 weeks and needed someone on vocals and fast. We applied candidates with online ad and received pretty impressive amount of replies.
"One person stand out at the very beginning with the active and promising approach and before one could say 'pussycat in my lubricative urine,' we were rehearsing repeatedly. The good news is, after these so far completed 2 gigs in a very short notice, everyone of us have been impressed of Panu Kivistö’s live appearance, brutal growls, personality and effort.
"We are relieved to announce now he is the new vocalist of Pyuria. Currently we are a dish composed of sausages from Turku, Salo and Tampere."
Since the release of debut album "Devil's Messenger" earlier this year, The Devastated has stayed busy on the road playing dates with Fear Factory, Shadows Fall, The Browning, and more. Now, the band has teamed up with StuffYouWillHate.com to premiere a new song titled "Grate Minds," which can be heard here or in the player below. In addition, The Devastated will be playing four shows at the end of this month.
The band also comments, "Happy Holidays everyone! With what has been an eventful 2012 for The Devastated, we would like to wind down the year with a few exciting announcements. First and foremost, we are very pleased to announce the addition of our new bassist David Sittig (Impending Doom). David has been a close friend of ours for many years and we are proud to have him aboard. With that, we would also like to announce a Holiday mini-tour December 27-30 with Polarization and Wrath of Vesuvius. These will be David's first shows with The Devastated, so please come out and show some love. On a final note, we would like to leave you with our Latest track 'Grate Minds', a B-side recorded during the same time as our debut record 'Devil's Messenger.' Enjoy! You can expect many exciting things from us in the New Year, so keep your eyes and ears open. Have a safe Holiday season and we'll see you all very soon."

Poland's progressive rockers Riverside have released the first look into their upcoming release, "Shrine of New Generation Slaves." Set for a North American release date of February 5th, 2013, this will be Riverside's fifth studio album. The album artwork and track list for "Shrine of New Generation Slaves" can be seen below, along with an official album trailer.
Riverside comments, "The lyrics on the new album deal with different situations we face in our modern times and how we sometimes become enslaved by them and by the style of life they dictate. For instance, we are dominated and bombarded by increasingly stupefying media. The media, in turn, is dominated by more and more people who are known for their well-knownness... Celebrities, the modern representatives of a need which lies deep within us all and is rarely satisfied - the feeling of importance. This feeling, and some of the dilemmas and complications connected with it, is the subject of our newest single - 'Celebrity Touch.' Musically, we still try to extend the bridge to connect the new music to the old. In this track we achieved some kind of original mixture and I hope you will enjoy this piece of new album."
The track listing is:
01. New Generation Slave (4:17)
02. The Depth of Self-Delusion (7:39)
03. Celebrity Touch (6:48)
04. We Got Used To Us (4:12)
05. Feel Like Falling (5:17)
06. Deprived [Irretrievably Lost Imagination] (8:26)
07. Escalator Shrine (12:41)
08. Coda (1:39)
"Shrine of New Generation Slaves" was recorded at Serakos Studio in Warsaw, Poland, where Reality Dream Trilogy was also tracked. Recorded with Magda Srzednicka and Robert Srzednicki, the album offers nearly an hour of classic Riverside music. More...
As news has broken of Randy Blythe’s indictment on manslaughter charges in the Czech Republic, manager Larry Mazer responds with the following statement:
“After a three month investigation, the prosecutor in the Czech Republic has decided to move forward with an indictment of Randy Blythe on the charge of manslaughter with intent to cause bodily harm. Obviously, we intend to fight vigorously against these charges as we feel that in no way did Randy intend to cause bodily harm on the young fan who subsequently died from injuries sustained at the show. As he has stated previously, Randy intends to go to Prague to defend himself at trial.
"While it is a tragedy that a Lamb of God fan died following a performance by the group, in no way do I feel that Randy did anything improper that led to the young man’s injuries and subsequent death. The price of a ticket to a show does not entitle audience members access to a band’s stage. In the years since the murder on stage of Dimebag Darrell Abbott, performers of all genres have had to become more guarded while performing in response to the dangers presented by fans trying to become part of the performance. We believe that Randy responded professionally to the numerous amount of fans rushing the stage that day, a number of them captured on videos that have been posted on the internet. We have testimony from the venue operator that acknowledges lax security and an improper barricade being used that evening. Numerous testimonies from fans also were contradictory as to the actions of the multiple fans that tried to access the stage.
"At this point, all that the band, myself, and our lawyers can do is to present a defense and try to convince the panel of judges who will hear the case that Randy is innocent of all charges and that his name and reputation need to be cleared and that he be permitted to carry on with his life and career always mindful that a fan passed away after a Lamb of God performance."
Today Decibel Magazine hosts the first of a two-part studio diary series from Brooklyn industrial doom derelicts Batillus. The band has been holed-up at Sound Generation Studios in New York City with production wizard Sanford Parker recording a second full-length entitled "Concrete Sustain."
The follow-up to 2011’s "Furnace" long player (reviewed here), is slated to detonate this March via Seventh Rule Recordings. Further details to be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out some tales from the control room through Decibel Magazine here.
You can also watch the band ravage souls at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar earlier last month sharing the stage with Nachtmystium, Mutilation Rites, and Lord Mantis with new track “Mirrors” below. Commented BrooklynVegan of the performance: “Batillus carried through that same noisy sensibility, with frontman Fade Kainer's harsh vocals, manipulated to a point where they could have been confused as something inhuman and otherworldly. The band's industrial sensibility lent an edge to their doom-influence dirges and, while slower than all the other bands on the bill, made BATILLUS equally brutal as next band Mutilation Rites' most unforgiving riff.” More...
Sweden’s Tiamat has never been a band confined to a certain sound. Whenever an album conveys a certain path, the group turns around and travels a different route on the next album. From their Swedish death roots of “Sumerian Cry” to the atmospheric doom of “Clouds” to the bluesy soundscapes of “Wildhoney” to the electronic beats of “Judas Christ”—each album seems related only in their pursuit of lush ambiance.
“The Scarred People,” Tiamat’s tenth full-length studio record, bridges many of the ideas and sounds heard throughout the group’s long history. Tiamat mastermind, Johan Edlund corresponded with Metal Underground via the internet to give us the scoop on “The Scarred People.” More...

The 2012 edition featured such acts as Nile, Immolation, Gorguts, and more. Commented crew member Willem Van Maele: "We are working hard on next year's edition. The concept stays the same and it won't be easy to top last year's edition, but we won't settle for less!
"Metal Méan has a 'for the fans, by the fans' mentality and prefers quality over quantity by choosing to have only one stage."

Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall has been replaced by fill-in drummers for recent shows, and now he has checked in with the following update about his condition:
"Well I'm happy to say that I'm feeling much better, back to playing, and almost feel 100% - too bad my insides are still not 100% but they're healing nicely primarily due to me staying off the road and resting.
"I have another round of bloodwork next week, in which the docs think I should be back to all normal internal functions by then, but they still are prohibiting me from leaving until after my endoscope on Dec. 18th (they need to hopefully find the cause of the Pancreatitis, and whether or not anything else is going on as well - but I feel pretty confident that I'll be ok).
"So what does this mean to Shadows Fall - it means that I, sadly, will not be able to return until after the 18th. In the meantime please go continue to support the band on the KSE tour with my boy Willis covering for me - he's got a tough job and he's handling it like a pro from what I've seen and heard.....I'm really missing the band, and the fans and tour, but I promise that I WILL be on the last dates of the tour after xmas:

"Symphonic" is not the next proper new album from Ex-Masterplan vocalist Jørn Lande, but rather a selection of tracks taken from the vocal icon's previous studio releases, which have been remixed in order to add a grandiose classical orchestra arrangement to the existing hard rock structure. The album is scheduled for release via Frontiers Records on January 22, 2013 (North America) and January 25, 2013 (EU).
Lande commented: "I didn't want to choose the most obvious Jorn songs, as I didn't want this album to come out as a typical 'best of' release. Some songs that are not too typical in a Jørn context, were chosen simply because some great songs often tend to be forgotten and therefore deserve a second chance."
Tracks like “I Came to Rock”, “Burn Your Flame” and “Behind the Clown” are presented in a very intriguing and different new dressing, which enhances the variety and depth of Jørn’s classic songwriting and performance style. In Jorn’s words: "'I Came To Rock,' might now even remind the listener of a Broadway musical, not coming from a heavy rock band like Jørn. The new version of 'Behind The Clown' shows how much as a young boy I have been fascinated by Kate Bush. 'Burn Your Flame' instead came out really fresh and different, compared to the original version on 'Spirit Black' from 2009."
"Symphonic" will also includes an unreleased cover version of Dio’s "Rock 'n' Roll Children." "I hope you will enjoy the album and maybe you will even rediscover some songs you had forgotten…," concludes Jorn.
The track listing for "Symphonic" is:
1. I Came To Rock
2. Rock 'n' Roll Children (Dio Cover)
3. The World I See
4. Burn Your Flame
5. Man Of The Dark
6. My Road
7. Time To Be King
8. Black Morning
9. Like Stone In Water
10. Vision Eyes
11. War Of The World

Listenable Records has inked a pact with new wave of British heavy metal act Satan. The label issued the following statement:
"The band os currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to an album entirely of new material written over the last 18 months. This is the culmination of a process that began when the original ‘Court In The Act’ album line-up got together for an exclusive ‘one-off’ re-union show at Germany’s ‘KEEP IT TRUE’ Festival last year.
"This line-up had not performed together in 28 years! The band were somewhat overwhelmed with the response - 10 minutes into headliners ‘Crimson Glory’s set, the crowd could still be heard chanting Satan! Satan! Satan immediately booked more shows in Germany, Holland, Belgium, & London, and have since kept in close contact with each other, writing songs and making demos.
"The new album, to be titled ‘Life Sentence’ is scheduled for release March/April 2013. The full track listing is as follows: ‘Time To Die’ ‘Twenty Twenty Five’ ‘Cenotaph’ ‘Siege Mentality’ ‘Incantations’ ‘Testimony’ ‘Tears Of Blood’ ‘Life Sentence’ ‘Personal Demons’ ‘Another Universe’. Fittingly, this will mark the 30th anniversary of their greatly acclaimed debut ‘Court In The Act’." More...

After spending a very eventful and busy year promoting latest album release "Bilateral" (reviewed here), acclaimed Norwegian progsters Leprous have now started the recording sessions for an upcoming, currently untitled, studio album set to be released before summer 2013 worldwide via InsideOut Music.
Leprous singer / synth-player Einar Solberg checked in with a status report: "As many of you already know, we've started recording our new album. The drums are finished, and we're now focusing on the guitars. Also this time we're using Vegard 'Ihsahn' Tveitan and Heidi 'StarOfAsh' S. Tveitan as our producers / technicians. The drums were recorded in the really cool and old school Juke Joint Studio, and we're really satisfied with the result.
"As far as the new music, we can only remind you that Leprous will never be the kind of band to re-create the mood from previous works, and it's very important for us that each album has its own strong character. We have great belief in this album and we promise something fresh, challenging and soulful! This album will also be mixed and mastered by Mr. Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios."
Check out a special studio video from the drum recording sessions in the player below. Upcoming live actions in 2013 from Leprous are also available after the jump. More...
Razorback Recordings has issued the following announcement about releasing a new album from Howling:
"When the howling starts, the terror begins! Razorback Recordings will be releasing the debut full-length CD in early 2013 from the death-thrashing creatures of the night, Howling! The band is a whirlwind of loud, fast, and thrashing heavy fucking METAL, with an emphasis on extremely catchy headbanging riffs meant to summon forth the powers of darkness!
"Get ready for an album loaded with some of the most memorable riffs and songs in a long time. Definitely an album you will want to play over and over again. The band takes influence from many classic bands but avoids the typical 'retro' thing by simply writing good SONGS and doing their own thing, which is something that is really missing from underground metal today.
"The album cover will be drawn by the amazing slasher design artist Justin Osbourn, who draws incredible horror art in the style of classic 70's film posters and 80's VHS cover art!" More...
