Infant Annihilator has issued the following update about releasing a new album in 2014:
"2013 has been a mixed year for us. We've been slow with the album, Eddie temporarily left and we haven't put out anything new for a long time.
"2014 is going to be a big year for us. There will be a new album, new videos, new play-throughs, a few secret surprises and some new merch designs!
"You guys have had faith in us without any new material. You kept spreading the word, sharing videos, buying merch and keeping us alive! We are ridiculously grateful for how far we've come in 2013. We don't play shows or tour. This means all the hype has come directly from you guys, sitting behind your screens and sharing our shit and buying our merch! Thank you!!
"ON THE TOPIC OF MERCH: there have been a few people who still, after months, have not received anything. Although this is definitely not a fault on our end (we triple-check every order personally), it is unacceptable. From now on, we'll be using a different company to ship our merch. We will also provide full refunds to the people who's orders from the last batches of merch haven't been received. Also, we will eventually be re-printing every design. When we actually have the stock in, we'll re-send the items that these people are missing.
"So to be clear: Anyone who has emailed us before today regarding missing merch from the previous batches will get a full refund AND (when we have the stock) be re-sent their missing item.
"Thanks again for supporting us and keeping IA alive!"

Finland's Kuolemanlaakso released the "Musta Aurinko Nousee" EP (reviewed here) this year, and now the band has issued the following statement about an upcoming album:
"Thank you very much for your support in 2013. We had a great year, highlights of which include a kick-ass tour with Jess and the Ancient Ones, spreading mayhem at Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, and recording not only the critically acclaimed 'Musta aurinko nousee' mCD/mLP, but a full-length as well.
"Details concerning the album will be unleashed shortly, but we can tell you this much right now: it consists of the most varied, epic, melancholic and ambitious material, that Kuolemanlaakso has ever written.
"Enjoy the death of 2013; may 2014 be a triumphant rebirth.
"Doom or be doomed,
Stryper released new album "No More Hell To Pay" earlier this year, and now Michael Sweet has checked in with the following year-end message:
"The year is almost over and we're about to count in 2014. A lot has transpired over the past 12 months and although 2013 holds a lot of achievements and accomplishments, 2014 looks to be a year that will surpass 2013, which is hard to believe.
"I want to thank you all for taking the journey with me over the past year and I'm asking that you fasten your seat belts for the year to come - it's going to be quite a ride! May God Bless you all and I wish you a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year." More...
Sweden's Skineater has issued the following announcement about parting ways with vocalist Jörgen Ström:
"We are sad to inform you that Jörgen is no longer a member of Skineater! We want to thank Jörgen for his truly amazing efforts in Skineater! Jörgen is an old friend of us and there is absolutely no hard feelings between us. We thank you Jörgen for everything, it has been a pleasure to have you on board on this machine called Skineater! Good luck with your future plans!"
Jörgen also comments: "As of now I´m no longer a member of Skineater. I decided to leave the band because of lack of time and motivation to put in all the hard work that is necessary to keep the band moving forward. I still consider the other guys good friends of mine and I wish them all the best in the future! I see my self more as a bass player than a vocalist, so that's what I´ll be doing now. Slappin da bass!" More...
Greek black metal band Naer Mataron has released the song "Apocalypse Of The Ancient One," which can be heard below. The group also issued the following year-end message:
"For the new year... arrival of the Aten god. A year has passed, slipping away like a shadow fades unto the silence of an endless night.
"A year that saw us as blazing protagonists of our intimate artistic process of evolution, architects of our inner change, witnessing a daily reality diluted in nightmares but conscious of what art means to us despite of everything happened in our lives!
"As the wise King who victoriously reigns conscious of his triumphs and defeats, Naer Mataron now overlook to the gate of the new year with vigor and strength as never had before like the phoenix rising from the ashes!
"And with this message we turn to you fanatic supporters, loyal allies of the true voice of music, wishing you a happy ending for this 2013 and a new beginning for all of you!" More...

Poland's Thunderwar released "The Birth of Thunder" EP earlier this year, and we had the pleasure to bring you the premiere of the track "Eagle of Glory" (still available here).
Now the band has checked in with the following update about releasing a new album in 2014:
"2013 is almost gone with the wind. The year Thunderwar officially started its activity in the metal world. It was a time of important and precious experiences, music adventures and bright plans for the future. Today we’ve reached 2000 likes on Facebook - that’s a great forecast for the year 2014!
"Thanks to all of those who supported us and still do! We are not gonna slow down and preparing ourselves to hit with the new powers within few next months! In February Thunderwar supports Pandemonium on it’s polish tour (details soon TBA) and in the middle of 2014 we are entering the Hertz Studio to release our first full album!"

Continents guitarist Tom Weaver has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band:
"Yo, I'm not sure if this will come as a surprise or not, or whether anyone will actually care all that much, but with immediate effect I'm stepping down as guitarist for Continents.
"I've had a pretty hectic year with the band and in my own personal life too, and it's come to the point where I'm finding that I no longer have the enthusiasm or passion for music that I once had. I leave the band with no regrets, no bitterness, no bad terms, and with no doubt that the rest of the guys will be going on to huge things in 2014 and beyond; but my limited interest and devotion is only ever going to act as a weight, and I don't want to be the one to hold the band back.
"As it stands I'm hoping the Odessa U.K. farewell show with Demoraliser and Despite My Deepest Fear will also act as my farewell show too. All those guys were there with us when things really started to take off, and it only seems fitting that they're there when they end for me.
"I need to thank the other guys for sharing an incredible 4 years with me, Dean, Spud, Mike Jones, and any other promoters who helped us get off the ground back in 2010, everyone at Victory Records for having enough faith in us to help fund our endeavors since 2012, all of the guys at Burning Chariot Media, Marianne Harris, Leigh Drinkwater, Georgia Pearce, Ryan Rodrigues, and any other photographers who've helped capture my fantastic guitar gurns, anyone who's ever let me sleep on their floor or in a spare bed, anyone who's ever come up to me at a show and asked what brand my guitar is or what the settings are on my amp (I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful, I'm actually a dreadful musician and I just play things that I think look cool), and anyone who's ever supported us as a band; I've experienced something that very few musicians will ever get to and I'm eternally grateful for that.
"I need to stress that this is by no means the end of Continents, we've already written a huge chunk of our second album, and have some huge plans for 2014. This is just the end of one chapter in a very long story." More...
Hope Before The Fall has issued the following statement looking back at the band's activity in 2013:
"It's been a whirlwind of a year. Looking back, we got to play some amazing shows in front of crazy crowds that we only dreamed of doing when we were kids. We want to thank you all for your love and support, as it's the only way we'd have such opportunities.
"You all are the unsung heroes of this scene. And we, as a band, will continue to do our best to make you proud and give back the same amount of heart and energy you've put into making this metal family what it is.
"Looking back, there were also a small handful of national bands in particular that went out of their way to recognize us, thank us for doing the dirty work of being the opener, provide encouragement and treated us like members of the tour. They're all around respectable, down to earth people and we'd be remiss if we didn't thank them for that.
"So thank you to Intervals, Twelve Foot Ninja, The Color Morale, and The Kindred for just being genuinely good people with no pretense. You guys are what musicians should be!
"Now, with that all said, bring on 2014! We're ready to crush it!"
Optic has checked in with the following year-end message to fans:
"New Years Eve 2014 has come! We just want to say thank you all for such a fantastic year! We had some good shows, an increased fan base, and finally released our debut album which will also go down as a milestone in our career, 'Iris In.'
"We are so glad with the feedback we were (and still are) receiving from reviews, purchases, and of course, THE FANS! THAT'S YOU GUYS!
"Once again, we thank each and every one of you for making this such a spectacular year for us and we are strongly looking forward to what 2014 has in store for us. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
"Until then, commence forth with 2014......." More...

"We can already tell you that the new CD will take off where we left off on The Fire Is Mine, but also include one of the fastest and most intense songs we have ever written. 3-4 songs deep already, and at least a year to polish and make the rest of the record ready for the consumption of your ears.

We come now to the end of a year overflowing with metallic fury from bands new and old, regrouped and long-running, and covering just about every imaginable sub-genre.
More than anything 2013 was characterized by returns of bands long dormant, with highlights for fans easily coming from the reemergence of Carcass, Gorguts, Summoning, Extol, and Black Sabbath.
While there were some notable critical flops (“Super Collider” and the self-titled “Satyricon” come to mind), this year featured an overall satisfying lineup of good, great, and even fantastic albums from across the metal spectrum. That’s a boon for metal heads, but it also makes it harder for us to easily nail down clear winners in our categories as votes come in from our diverse staff of contributors positioned around the globe.
Long running staples of the European scene made their marks as usual in 2013, with new albums from Amon Amarth, Amorphis, Stratovarius, and Dark Tranquillity. Interestingly, the U.S. wasn’t left behind as much this year, with tunes out from Skeletonwitch, Subrosa, Toxic Holocaust, Vattnet Viskar, ASG, Castevet, Inter Arma, and more.
Just because Testament wasn’t around didn’t mean thrash slouched off either, with Sodom, Onslaught, Evile, and Death Angel bringing out the big guns. The experimental and avant-garde side saw weirdly awesome releases from Oranssi Pazazu, Code, and Tribulation, while unexpectedly different offerings arrived courtesy of Watain and Darkthrone. Death metal meanwhile bore witness to newly unleashed material from the likes of Suffocation, Deicide, Autopsy, Hail of Bullets, Hypocrisy, and Six Feet Under. More...
