We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Jacob Bannon, the singer for Converge, tells a tale of a crazy Australian gig:
We played a show in middle of Australia. It was so bizarre. Mainly locals came to the show, mechanics, etc. They had no idea what to make of us. When we arrived, the door was a big school bus with sheet metal attached to the windows, making it a crazy wall into the venue. Tires and old car debris were everywhere. Tons of sand. People wearing the craziest things ever. Football pads, ripped up jeans. But they were all punks in some way and were armed. Totally wild. A little kid was even tossing around a boomerang. It was a total trip. In the middle of our set, a guy drove a dune buggy straight into the crowd. No one got hurt but it was NUTS. Complete chaos. He had a hockey mask on and was scary as fuck. We played a few more songs then jetted. So wild. We almost ran out of gas too. Real shortage out there.
Converge seems to be laying low of late, but was one of the first bands recently confirmed for France's Hellfest in 2011.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

The Word Alive has posted the following update online, announcing the departure of bassist Nicholas Urlacher.
"So this is not easy to announce for any of us, having one of our best friends departing from our incredible journey is a sad thing. Especially Nick, who has always been one of the best dudes to all of us, as well as someone who could make anyone smile on a bad day and a founding member. But sometimes people have to choose the path that is right for them. We support Nick and love him like a brother and will always consider him apart of the TWA family. Hopefully you will too!
"That being said, we want you guys to know we will not be missing ANY shows. We have a friend from Phoenix filling in for our next tour, so everyone say hi to our friend Daniel from Sharks Never Sleep on tour and be nice! Or else ; )
"We’ll be doing a public search for what will be a permanent member. This isn’t something we will be rushing in the least bit, we want to find the perfect fit for our band and the future of TWA. Below are a list of requirements we’ll need you to submit to firstname.lastname@example.org SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY!!
"If you do not fulfill the requirements please do not send an email to the band or this email address.
"We hope that through this change we can only continue to progress and play shows for all of you guys, which is our dream and our focus. Thank you for your understanding and support through everything. We can’t wait to see you in 2011 and will not let this slow us down.

Melding many different aspects of extreme metal together from doom to black metal, solo act Hallowed Butchery recently saw the release of a split album with Batillus, and is also currently working on a split with Falls of Rauros. Sole member Ryan Scott Fairfield took out some time to discuss the band with Metalunderground, as well as the other projects he is working with.
While discussing the themes of the song "Coffin Life," which appeared on the Batillus split, Fairfield commented, "I wanted to write this song to myself, in hopes that it would allow me to see that there is only one life, and that at any time, it could all be over. I want to follow my dreams, and that requires me to live every day of my life like it is my last day on earth. That's what this song is really about: taking control over your life, and making your dreams a reality." He also discusses how the band changed from Hallowed Butchery of the Son to just Hallowed Butchery and what's on the horizon for this rising solo act. More...
Dutch hardcore metal band No Turning Back has announced their signing to Think Fast! Records. The band just wrapped up recording their new full length effort, "Take Control," which will see a release on American soil on April 19th.
"I've known Martijn (vocals) for many years and have always admired his inability to slow down" comments Think Fast! co-owner Ryan O'Connor. "He doesn't seem to let anything or anyone keep his band from moving on and you have to respect that. We're very much looking forward to working with Martijn and the rest of the guys for the U.S. release of their new album."
Describing the album and meaning behind the title, vocalist Martijn Van Den Heuvel comments, "The record really is about us taking control not only as a band but also as individuals. This last year we had band members starting a van rental company for bands, a booking agency and even a workshop for custom built drum kits. The music and the lifestyle have become absorbed in our day to day lives. We feel Take Control is us documenting growing up and becoming adults while still remaining true to the ideals we had as 15 year old kids playing rudimentary music in our parents' garage."
Amaranthe has posted the following recording update through CrankItUp.se:
"Hey people! Olof here once again for crankitup.se! As some of you might've heard, the album is DONE! Which means everyone's back home safe, after two months of isolation in the Danish outback. Last two weeks was major crunch mode, with sleeping in the studio, ordering lots of take out food, and hanging with Ismael the Camel instead of our new Danish friends at various bars.
"After fiddling around and turning every detail upside down and polishing everything perfection, and then throwing dirt at it again just for the hell of it - we actually came to point where we said: 'this is done!' Which was nice, considering that we didn't have to spend Christmas and new year's with a bunch of exotic animals and random Danish farmers.
"We have to wonderful privilege of saying that this is *definitely* our best album so far, considering it is our first with AMARANTHE! So for once the cliché is true! ;) But needless to say, we couldn't really be more excited about how the album sounds song wise and production wise, and we're already feeling the love from a lot different directions! Most of it we cannot unveil right now - but we do have 22 shows in 15 countries booked already, with more coming soon, so check our myspace for all the relevant dates! Currently we are aiming for an April release, and we'll have more info about more exact dates and all that stuff *soon*, so stay tuned!"

Russia's Defect Designer has issued the following update about beginning pre-production for new material:
"Taking down 2010! ...maybe I am writing this too early, 2010 is hard and will still last long because there are too many things for me to do before the sound of chiming clock. But I am so tired now that I am affraid I won't be able to do it later this year. 2010: hard and tiring. Lineup changes, new friends, joining and rejoining people, new experience...
"2010 was a year when we met the unbelievable amount of interesting people. We met some digitally, some personally. We'd like to say big THANK YOU to all of you people, there is too big list to mention starting from really impressive register of music gear manufacturers that grew up in 2010 to amazing people from all other areas connected with music - thank you all for unforgettable 2010!!
"There are some new names in our 'Endorsement' column we haven't announced in our news yet and we surely will in 2011 - very soon. This happens so fast that from some point 2010 was like a flash - so much support from all over the world!
"Surely 2010 was not only joy - it had and still is having pitfalls. Even Myspace decided to stop being a pleasant place - decided that everyone should have shitty profile design and executed the most retarded decision ever - but we all know that even halls of justice are painted green - money talking. Let's be happy for Myspace. 2010 was a terrible year for music. We lost our icons - people who influenced us.. We'll always miss you, R.I.P. Too many names to mention, you all know them yourself. Thank you for sharing your passion. More...

Independent musicians, graphic artists, and a computer graphics demogroup have collaborated on a grand scale multimedia tribute to Mike Portnoy, in celebration of over a quarter of a century of highly influential musicianship. Mike Portnoy’s early investment into the internet, as well as his relationship with the global fan base, created a fad-transcending musical community that continues to grow past the post quarter century mark.
“Mike, over the years, has fueled an online community with tireless energy and effort, of which it has been a pleasure to be a part of. Members of the community feel that paying some of that energy forward is the least they could do to show their appreciation,” says compilation producer Anthony Morse.
The multimedia tribute appears in the form of a free three disc digital album, interviews,
and some stunning music videos graphically generated by the legendary Greek demogroup Andromeda Software Development.
"Honor Thy Drummer: A Tribute to Mike Portnoy" contains 3 digital discs, 2 new, and a bonus
2009 retrospective disc featuring choice selections from the previous digital release MPF
2009. "Honor Thy Drummer" features a diverse range of styles and approaches, drawing inspiration from Mr. Portnoy’s award winning approach to music, created by acts inspired by his musical influence. The resulting music seamlessly crosses many musical boundaries weaving from heavy time-spanning progressive metal to concise folk.
"The Honor Thy Drummer" multimedia collection is available for free download at spaceprog.com. It contains the digital album in MP3 format, a digital PDF booklet featuring photos, lyrics, and bios of the contributing artists. Two of three interviews with contributing artists Relocator, In Progress, and S.A. Adams, are included, and shed light on their collaborations with progressive metal superstars Derek Sherinian, Mark Zonder, and Mike Portnoy himself, all of whom play on the artists‘ tracks featured in Honor Thy Drummer. The third interview will be released in January.
The scope of this endeavor reaches across the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and the American continent. This project, fueled by the hard work and dedication of all of the participants, resulted in a quality work free to the world, and without the complications of revenue generation. The collection is, simply put, a high quality independent project available freely to all that desire the audio/visual experience.
Here are a couple of videos from the compilation:
