Apostasy Announces New Guitarist

Swedish extreme metal act Apostasy has posted the following statement online, announcing the addition of Peter Huss to the band's ranks as its new permanent guitarist:

"Peter Huss has done tons of session/live works and can play any type of music. He will be a great addition to APOSTASY on our upcoming songwriting/recording/live/drinking sessions.

Pentagram Comments On Metal Blade Signing

Pentagram founding members Bobby Liebling and Victor Griffin have commented on its recent signing with Metal Blade Records.

Bobby Liebling said:

"I reflect on how Pentagram is coming into its 40th year and how it finally feels like we are entering into the major leagues. With Metal Blade now at our side, it feels like we made the World Series! I'll quote John Lennon from 'A Hard Day's Night' and ask the loyal rivetheads out there, 'Did we pass the audition?'"

Victor Griffin commented by saying:

"Neither Bobby nor myself ever imagined we'd play together again. It's an honor to be reunited and celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pentagram, and the 30th anniversary of our musical relationship with a new album on Metal Blade Records! As always, we did it our way…thanks for making us survivors!"

Arch Enemy Recording New Album

Swedish melodic death metal act Arch Enemy has begun recording a new studio album, which will be the successor to 2007’s "Rise Of The Tyrant." After releasing the "Tyrants Of The Rising Sun – Live In Japan" live DVD/CD (2008) and the re-recordings album, "The Root Of All Evil" (2009), the band will now record it's next studio album.

The yet-to-be-named album will be self-produced by Arch Enemy, and engineered/mixed by Rickard Bengtsson (whom produced 2005's Doomsday Machine). The band has recently entered Sweetspot Studio in the south of Sweden for the album’s recording process, and drummer Daniel Erlandsson, who just finished off tracking his parts, checked in with the following report:

"After an intense but inspiring stay in the studio, I've just completed recording the drum tracks for the upcoming Arch Enemy album! We're working once again with Rickard Bengtsson, who produced ‘Doomsday Machine’, and he quickly dialed in an absolutely pristine drumtone! I've also had the expertise of local drum guru Beppe Wackelin at hand, helping out with tuning and kindly letting me use some of his vintage drums. This time around I've used a Pearl Reference drum kit, while incorporating various snare drums on songs that demanded a slightly different feel.

"We had a very inspiring and creative time writing this album, I think this is definitely evident when listening to the new songs. There's tons of variation in the material, ranging all the way from very melodic to extremely heavy. As you can expect there's no shortage of killer riffs and intricate guitar work, the Amott Bros have come up with some very cool yet demanding ideas! This album has some of the fastest songs I've ever recorded, along with a bunch of heavy pounding mid tempo songs. As always, it's difficult to describe music in words - but rest assured - this album will be one heavy fucker!"

Detente Calling It A Day

California's Detente has issued the following announcement about officially disbanding:

"DÉTENTE will call it a day. Today the Cognitive Records reissue of Recognize No Authority sold out, with nearly 3000 copies sold we would call it successful given a few years ago DÉTENTE were more of a trivia question (despite selling 10’s of thousands of copies in the 80’s). DÉTENTE Decline has also done well with over 1000 sold in the first few months.

"The band has put much work into the reunion and believes that while it has been hard work, that it has been a positive experience: having the opportunity to see so many of our friends on our last EU tour was especially cool! The fact is like everyone else, the band has daily responsibilities and the logistics of keeping DÉTENTE moving is no longer possible.

"While it is conceivable that we could get together for a festival in the future we believe it is time to call it a day. Thanks to everyone who has helped along the way, we value your effort and friendships."

Crimson Falls Issues Band Update

Crimson Falls has issued the following end-of-year update and announcement about signing to Rising Records:

"Hello everyone, time for a bigger news update on Crimson Falls; we’ve got lots of good news to share with you! First of all we’re very happy to announce that we’ve signed to Rising Records (UK) for a release of our last full cd ‘Fragments of Awareness’; scheduled for early March 2011!

"This means that this album will be easily available outside Belgium/Holland as well through Plastic Head Distribution ànd that the album will be supported by a nice promo campaign in the UK & Europe. We believe this cooperation can push us to a new level and we consider it an honour to share the labels roster with bands such as Trigger The Bloodshed, Bleed From Within, Sworn Amongst & of course our buddies in Moker. We hope to cross the channel in support of the UK-release for the first time in March or April 2011!

"This is also a good time to thank our previous label Genet Records for all the support they’ve given us these last years. We’ve got great memories of our appearance at Ieperfest 2009 and of our shows with our heroes in All Shall Perish, The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Despised Icon & Origin. This is something we won’t forget and will appreciate throughout the rest of our band’s existence. Thank you Genet!

"Other good news (for the guitar playing dudes in the band) is that we also inked an endorsement deal with ESP Guitars, one of the leading brands for metal guitars! Once the orders are placed we expect our new babies to arrive halfway 2011. We’re honoured to connect our name to such a respected company and are siked to play on these pearls! Meanwhile we adapted to the new myspace profile as well. Check here for the new lay-out. Thanks to lifecult_illustrations@hotmail.com for setting it up for us and doing an awesome job. More...

Unearthing The Metal Underground In Singapore #2

Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am looking into the Singapore scene once again.

In our previous article, we talked about three bands, namely Draconis Infernum, Xanadoo and Meza Virs. For this article, we will talk a bit about three death metal bands from Singapore.

Assault

Formed in early 2006, Assault has been a regular performer in local gigs. After four years and finally having a stable lineup, they are finally about to release their debut EP, "The Exceptions of the Rebellions." Assault plays a brand of melodic death metal, citing influences ranging from Arch Enemy to old school death metal bands. Covers of Bloodbath songs are a staple on their live shows, often drawing curious onlookers and instantly converting them into fans of the band. Vocalist Clarence’s vocals range from deep growls all the way to high pitched screeches. Backed by a solid instrumental section, they are definitely one band to watch out for. Check out Assault’s MySpace page here. Their debut EP is expected to be released in mid-January, 2011. More...

Flesh Parade Finishes New Album

Flesh Parade has issued the following update about finishing the band's new album "Dirty Sweet:"

"On December 10, 2010, Flesh Parade finally completed mastering on their long awaited full-length, 'Dirty Sweet.' Since announcing a return in 2004 & reforming in 2005 to begin work on Dirty Sweet, Flesh Parade has been through some rough times. Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in August of 2005 and separated the band for two years. Once everyone was finally settled it was decided they would continue on the album as originally planned. Flesh Parade's singer, Jason Pilgrim, however didn't feel the same way. This left guitarist, René Perez & drummer Todd Capiton scratching their heads on what to do. Move on or call it quits? Well a huge FUCK NO! was decided on calling it quits.

"In July of 2007, the two decided to find a practice room and begin working again. The very first night they auditioned vocalist Scott Leger, formerly of Shrum and D.I.E. Although they would go on to audition others, in the end Leger had the passion and knowledge for the music that made him the clear choice to replace Pilgrim.

"Flesh Parade continued to write and rehearse for the album, but got an offer to play MDF in 2008, so that became a huge focus. The band's first show since 2000. Bassist Julien Fried came on board and the band was whole once more. Throughout 2008 the band would continue to write and play one more show. Fried would leave the band and Tony Salisbury from the Nola grindcore band, Mule Skinner would replace him on bass. More...

Mike Portnoy Blocked From Re-Joining Dream Theater

Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently ended his time as touring drummer with Avenged Sevenfold. In a response to a post on his official forum, Mike Portnoy has issued the following confirmation that he attempted to rejoin Dream Theater but was rebuffed by the band:

"Just for the record, this is indeed true.. Fairly recently, I reached out to the guys to try and make amends and offered to reconcile for the sake of having peace back in our lives...(plus I know how much it meant to alot of the fans...)

"I figured it was still possible to try and save us because they hadn't made any announcements yet or begun any public activity with another drummer...but sadly, they declined my offer (well, actually their lawyer did...they didn't even tell me themselves....)

"Sorry gang, I honestly gave it my all... So now the fans on my twitter and facebook can please stop asking me to go back to DT...I tried, and the door is now shut...the ball is now in their court, not mine...

"PS - I'm not crying or looking for mercy by posting this...I am merely trying to set the record straight as that is always the most important thing about my relationship with you guys...no BS, no spins, nothing to hide...and for better or for worse, I tell it like it is...

"I've also recently seen some people accuse my online activity of 'looking for attention or media coverage' or 'looking for sympathy,' but it's honestly none of the above...I merely value having an open and active communication with my fans...always have, always will...it is the cornerstone of everything I've done since day #1 with DT....

"This was posted here FOR YOU GUYS to know about...here on MY message board on MY website....if it ends up on Blabbermouth or wherever else, that is THEIR choice to spread, I did not request it or send out a 'press release'.... Anyways, onward and upward..."

Sasha Grey Discusses Metal Music

Pornographic actress Sasha Grey, who was also cast for a season of the TV show Entourage and starred in the movie "The Girlfriend Experience," recently spoke with ArtistDirect.com about music. An excerpt from the interview follows.

Which artists really shaped you?

Sasha: There are people who heavily influenced me that you would never hear in aTelecine's music like Jimi Hendrix. That's been my number one obsession since I was a kid. Then there are artists like Black Flag and Ice Cube. They know what they want and they're not afraid to go out and get it. It's more about the ideology and fearlessness that has inspired me and our band members rather than sound. I feel like a lot of that influence comes through in the attitude and power of what we're doing. When you go to listen to our album, it's not necessarily loud. We're not screaming—at least not yet. We haven't really shaped our sound necessarily either. As far as our sound goes, I'd have to say people like Throbbing Gristle, Squarepusher, LUSTMORD, Kraftwerk, and Aphex Twin. Acts such as those are always playing with music and the very idea of music. They challenge the status quo to the point where people might say, "This isn't music?" However, what is music? It's like Coil said, "When you think of music, you think of Coil." They challenge us to never stay in one place, and I like that.

Is there some early Ministry in there too? Perhaps "Every Day Is Halloween" era Al Jourgensen?

Sasha: For sure! [Laughs] That's one I definitely left out. Their first two albums are the best. You know a lot of people don't like the early stuff, but I actually like it.

What heavy metal are you into?

Sasha: Oh God....Slayer, Judas Priest, Agalloch, Black Sabbath…I listen to a lot of black metal too. I just copped a Burzum album on vinyl a month ago on vinyl. I still haven't listened to it though. I came out of a record store in San Francisco with two huge boxes of vinyl [Laughs]. Some were used and some were new. I haven't even gone through it all yet. I don't remember half the shit I bought. I had to separate it from my vinyl that's actually in order and put it at the bottom so I know I'll listen to it at least once before I start filing it away.

Behemoth Frontman Reportedly Undergoes Surgery

As was previously announced, Behemoth front man Adam "Nergal" Darski recently found a bone marrow transplant donor.

Although no official statement has been released from Behemoth, Gunshyassassin.com has now issued the following statement about Nergal undergoing surgery:

In what may be the first step in his full recovery, Behemoth frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski has undergone what I’m hoping will be a life-saving bone marrow transplant. The 33-year-old metaller is said to be doing well after the procedure.

For those who’ve been living under a rock the last year, Nergal was diagnosed with leukemia some months ago, and recently revealed that a genetic donor match had been found and that he would soon be getting that much-needed transplant.

According to reports, Nergal will spend the next four weeks in an isolation room at the hematology division of Uniwersyteckie Centrum Kliniczne (UCK) in Gdansk to avoid any infection while his immune system is compromised.

Saxon Checks In With Band Update

Saxon has checked in with the following end-of-year update about working on a new album, seeking a new label, and meeting Lady GaGa:

"Just want to wish all our fans around the world a Happy Christmas and a great new year! Just an update on what's been happening on planet Saxon...we've been working hard on the new album, a big thank you to everyone at hard rock hell who came to the show. We were stuck in the snow a day before the show so I went out and bought a 4x4 truck from the local garage so we could get there (that's dedication for you !). Unfortunately 2 days later the clutch went...

"So I spent a cold lonely 3hrs on the A1 waiting for the AA man to turn up! Got passes to see Lady Gaga for my daughter but she couldn't go so I went with our agent, Steve. As we walked back stage we met the manager of heavy metal DJ Lady Starlight and a couple of members of the support act Semi-precious weapons and they invited us back to the dressing room for a drink. As we drained our glasses we said thanks and say hello to lady Gaga from us The show was great, we went off to the back stage bar for another drink. Suddenly Lady Starlight came in and said that lady Gaga would like to meet us, then we had a fantastic 50 mins with Miss Gaga who is a massive heavy rock fan and Saxon fan talking everything rock. She's a great lady and it was a great privilege to meet her. I think she's put a picture on her twitter. Just Google Biff and Gaga and it'll come up.

"Looking forward to the cruise and off back to Australia again in February and may have to do some recording over there on our days off ( no rest for the wicked ) and the new World tour starts in Greece.

"We're not on SPV anymore and we're talking to different record companies around the world. It's important we find the right one for the band. Keep the faith."

ThanatoSchizO Streaming New Song

ThanatoSchizO has issued the following announcement about streaming a new song online from the band's upcoming album "Origami:"

"ThanatoSchizO have just divulged the advanced song from Origami, their 5th album, which will come out on January 2011. The chosen track is (Un)bearable Certainty that was originally released in the 2008 record – Zoom Code - and now has the collaboration of Fadomorse's Hugo Correia. The theme can be downloaded at this location or listened to online streaming through the band’s renewed Myspace that will present a lot of new things, including photos of the new line-up.

"After ten years with a stable set of members, TSO is now reduced to a quartet. Patrícia, Guilhermino, Filipe and Paulo will be joined on stage by two session members, who will be revealed in due time. Concerning this, Guilhermino has said the following: 'In the middle of the recording process and after the guitars’ tracking, Eduardo approached us to announce that he had the need to leave the group to focus on his other artistic passion: the plastic arts. In that time, we had to ponder which was the path to follow and the natural solution was clear: Patrícia should be taking on the main vocals role from that moment on and I would take care of the backing vocals. The whole departure procedure was cordial and the friendship has remained intact. In Miguel’s case, he also recorded the album’s bass guitar but, due to professional reasons, he is abroad and that makes it impossible for him to be present in live performances, which could be dully noted both at Teatro de Vila Real and Ermal Festival in 2009. The rehearsals are going smoothly and I can guarantee to our fans that the session members’ choice was not taken lightly. After all, this band is an important part of our lives and we wouldn’t make a careless decision.'"

The "Origami" track listing is as follows: More...
