Heavy music has been steadily evolving since its first major appearances, from slow moving doom to blistering fast thrash and onto the most brutal death metal. Somewhere after figuring out corpse paint and freezing cold riffs somebody decided extreme metal could include unexpected elements like string instruments, keyboards, and other orchestral leanings. The symphonic and the extreme collided, and somehow it worked out.
Now some 15 - 20 years later bands are still finding ways to meld together these two styles, but for symphonic black metal junkies the pool of available talent isn’t as wide as with other sub-genres. You’ve likely heard everything from Dimmu Borgir and Old Man’s Child a hundred times over, blazed through the couple of Dragon Lord releases, imported all those Opera IX CDs, and are done working through the Carach Angren back catalog…so what now?
We’ve previously taken a look at a few symphonic black metal acts as well as other heavily atmospheric bands, but there’s still more underground groups worth checking out if you need more orchestral influenced black metal.
This Belgian outfit is on the verge of releasing second album “Ritu” in January 2013 (reviewed here), which follows the debut “Irreversible Decay” album. The album focuses on different rites of various cultures and mythologies, including a dose of Lovecraftian rituals with songs like “Haunter of the Dark” and “Fhtagn.”
For more info on the album, check out our interview with the band just after the recording process was finished. Get acquainted with Saille’s version of symphonic black metal through songs off both albums, available below.
All was quiet in the Quarter, save the sidewalk in front of the renowned One Eyed Jacks. The entire heavy scene of New Orleans is in attendance tonight; the beer flows like water as we all file into the main room where opening band Lo-Pan is about to take the stage.
Lo-Pan’s last NOLA performance at Siberia in 2011 garnered a small crowd, playing with local doom groove outfit Endall and Ryan McKern,tThe band now has a packed house to play its unique post-rock hybrid sound. The opening notes are low and dominating, somewhere between Clutch and older Corrosion of Conformity. Jeff Martin’s vocals kick in and it immediately shifts to a softer Soundgarden vibe. The band is passionate about the music, and this is evident in the live show: well-rehearsed structures and tight playing abilities win over the crowd. More...

Sharing this with our fans is a perfect ending to a great year, which of course started with the release of the 'Plague of Conscience' album, and is ending with us making some cool plans for 2013.
"We're currently working on our next record, so stay tuned for more news on that soon. Thanks for all the support we've had this year - have a very metal Christmas and a drunken and debauched New Year!" More...

Today Svarga Music announces March 4th, 2013 as the international release date for Paganland's "Wind of Freedom." The band's debut album "Wind of Freedom" is the Ukrainians' first new release in nearly five years, following a split CD with Tini Zabutyh Predkiv in 2008. The album's track listing is:
1. Wheel of Eternity (intro)
2. Shadows of the Past
3. Power of Spirit
6. Night Forest
7. Fogs and Twilights
8. Wind of Freedom
The following press release was also issued about the band's history:
"Paganland was founded in 1997 by Ruen and Bilozor in Lviv – one of the most beautiful Ukrainian cities, whose developed traditions incorporated the European cultural spirit of the last millennium, and every stone breathes with centuries-old history of decline and revival, wars and temporary rest. The natural mysticism hidden in the Carpathians’ greatness, the dense woods, and pure mountain sources could not but affect musicians with a pagan outlook. Therefore, Paganland's debut demo Gods of Golden Circle (1999) and the demo Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (2004), one way or another, had been nearly related to pagan metal. The line-up changes, routine of rehearsals, and hardships of concert activity caused PAGANLAND's breakup in 2005, but three years later, the group re-formed and in 2011 recorded the first full-length album, Wind Of Freedom, having resumed their concert activity.
"Paganland is a group of persons holding the same views, who respect and love their native land, their nation, their language, and who are convinced that the Ukraine is the cradle of all Slavonic people with improbably interesting history forgotten and distorted for the last ten centuries. Megaliths and petroglyphs of Kamennaya Mogila (the Stone Grave), the sanctuary-observatory of Khortyt'sia, the ancient observatory of Mavrinsky Maidan, the mysterious zone of Suppert…the runes of Veles’ Book and runic manuscripts from the library of Anna Yaroslavna (Queen of France and Princess of Ukraine)…secret knowledge of molfars and volkhves...how many people around the world have even heard about all of this?
"Paganland's members try to express their love of the native land, the nature in their lyrics and music, as well as draw attention of their listeners to the fact that not only money and lies rule the world in the period of the Epoch of Pisces. Human beings can - and must - stand up for the truth, and the truth of life has been established long ago by our ancestors. All meaning of Paganland's creative activity is tribute to their land, their ancient culture, their history." More...
