Unearthing The Metal Underground in Bulgaria

Eastern Europe is a hotbed for extreme metal. Behemoth and Vader opened venues and studio doors to growls and screams, and invited a whole new generation of cult bands into their realm of the world. Today, we are going to focus on three of those bands. MU has reported on one of these bands in the past, Enthrallment, but we will be introducing two more--Dimholt and Dark Incognito.

Bulgaria did not always allow extreme metal within its borders. Since the mid-40s, Bulgaria was under Soviet rule. As soon as the Eastern Bloc collapsed, heavy bands began to form. Murder Sound studio owner and Enthrallment drummer, Ivo Ivanov states that many bands began to form in the period of 1989-1993 in his hometown of Pleven. Artists such as Mortal Remains, Corpse and Necrophilia ushered in the first wave of extreme metal. Ivanov's band, Enthrallment emerged during the the period of 1993-1998, an era he dubs the "zenith of the death metal industry."

Starting with their 1999 demo "The Scarlet Difference" and ending with their latest full-length "People From The Lands of Vit," Enthrallment has created death metal appeasing to their European neighbors and long-distance listeners in America. The group has played Serbia's Hellhammer Festival and Obscene Extreme Fest. They toured with Malevolent Creation, Rotting Christ and Rotten Sound in 2011, and supported major acts such as Destruction, Obituary, Deicide and Napalm Death.

In a couple of weeks, at the beginning of 2014, Enthrallment will release its newest incarnation of audio filth, "The Voice of Human Perversity." Ivanov recorded and mixed the album in his Murder Sound Studio, while the group sent the recording to Safehouse Production in Florida to be mastered by James Murphy. Check out a preview of the album below, as well as the video for "Fruits of Pain and Blue Sky."

After The Burial Streaming New Album

After The Burial's new full-length album, "Wolves Within," can be streamed in its entirety now in the YouTube playlist below.

The album will be available everywhere tomorrow, Tuesday, December 17th. Sumerian Records also comments on the full-length release:

"Minnesota based After The Burial has returned with what is being hailed as their career defining album, Wolves Within, which is now set for a Dec 17th release.

"It's been three years since the band has released any new material, but upon first listen it's very evident that it's been well worth the wait. The tech wizardry is amped way up, the breakdowns are massive and face melting and the vocal delivery is the most devastating yet.

"Already lauded for their technically impressive yet well structured style of songwriting, After The Burial certainly takes things up a notch or two with this newest outing." More...

Wizard Parts Ways With Bassist

Germany's Wizard has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's bassist:

"Volker Leson is forced to stop his activity in Wizard due to health issues. This was already suggested during the second part of the the German Metal Attack Tour, on which he couldn't be present.

"He will remain part of the Wizard family forever, and if his health will allow him, he will continue writing songs for the band. We also hope he will be able to return to the ranks of the band on stage within year or two.

"For now, we would like to introduce you our old friend Arnd Ratering - ex member of the prog band No Inner Limits - as the new bass player of Wizard. Fans already had an occasion to see him on stage during last few shows we did, and surely can agree he is technically great musician.

"We are looking forward to bring you more metal, and we can't wait to play next shows for
all of you! We also wish all the best to our brother Volker: may he return with health and strength!" More...

Huntress Issues Year-End Recap

Huntress has locked down another year of victories as a newcomer metal band having released sophomore album "Starbound Beast" and touring non-stop. Vocalist Jill Janus comemnts:

"This has been an incredible year for the band, 2013 began with Huntress writing and recording our 2nd album Starbound Beast, which was produced by Zeuss. We've been touring virtually non-stop -- Sweden Rock Festival, Download Festival, The Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, Heavy MTL, Danzig's 25th Anniversary Tour with Doyle, and ending a wild year as the opening act for Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Testament in North America. No rest for the wicked!

"Our video for 'Zenith' (directed by Phil Mucci) was filmed during our hectic tour schedule. It surpassed our expectations and truly captured the vision of our album. It's part of our legacy, and part of our path to rise above the glorification of mediocrity. Huntress is here for the long haul; our determination, vision and love of music will continue to be our driving force. Hail Heavy Metal!"

2014 will begin right where 2013 left off - seeing Huntress join forces again with Lamb of God, this time for a European/UK tour with Decapitated. The band will also play a string of headline shows, four of which have been announced so far with more to be added soon. See below for a complete list of all dates. More...

Falconer Finishes Writing New Album

Swedish folk metal standard-bearers Falconer have completed the songwriting for their upcoming eighth album. Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall explains:

"The 8th album 'Black Moon Rising' is finally written. This time we have even made some preproductions of the material to test it out in advance. Some titles are: 'There's a crow on the barrow,' 'Age of runes,' 'Scoundrel and the squire.' We will enter the studio in January and release it in June 2014. As said before, all songs are in English this time after the last album's one-off with only Swedish songs.

"It's for sure the most riff based album in many years and there are certainly some furious moments of brow-raising on the album! If I would sum up the material with two words they would be: Intensity and revitalization.

"We will keep it quite basic with no guest musicians and almost no keyboards to keep it raw, natural and unpretentious. Can't wait to enter the studio and put the finishing touches on the songs!"

Falconer's previous album, "Armod," was released back in 2011.

Bleeding Fist Announces New Compilation

Moribund Records has announced March 4th, 2014 as the release date for Bleeding Fist's new compilation, "Death's Old Stench: The Deathcult Sessions."

With this compilation, the Slovenian chaos black metallers open up their crypt to reveal an arsenal of unreleased songs from 2011-2013. At a dozen tracks strong, "Death's Old Stench" unveils a different side to Bleeding Fist, one less manic and chaotic and more classically grim and ghastly.

This compilation serves as a precursor to the band's next album, of which seven songs were recently written. "The result that came out of a weekend drenched in alcoholic rites, a sick-to-the-bone old black/thrash metal monstrosity," according to the band.

1. Angel Negro (Intro)
2. Holy Saint of Death
3. Brotherhood Of Chaos And Death
4. Revelation Of Degenesis
5. The Veiled Crowned Queen
6. De La Muerte (Intermezzo)
7. Azazel
8. Death Almighty Death
9. Blackened Illumination
10. Tweens Of Darkness And Evil
11. Cursed Blood
12. Prelude To The Total Death 266 (Outro)

Vocalist Hellscream had the following to say: "Death's Old Stench is Bleeding Fist's strangest, most obscure, and most esoteric effort. It's really different from what we've done up till now, but in a way, it describes perfectly one of darkest times in our life as a band and as individuals. After the departure of [guitarists] Angelus and Occultus, we thought whether to release this album, because it was incomplete and in a partial demo form, so we decided in 2013 to finish this work and release it as raw and fucked-up as it was when we last left the studio. So, this is not really a new Bleeding Fist album, but a strange and alchemic occult statement to honor our master Satan." More...

Lynchmada Splits With Vocalist

Front man Joel Harris of Australian outfit Lynchmada has checked in with the following announcement about parting ways with the band:

"It's made me the person I am today. It's given me everything my 13 year old self had ever hoped of achieving and then some. It's turned friends into brothers that will last a lifetime.

"This amazing country and the people in it helped me realize my dreams, and all I had to do was yell words into a microphone.

"Mada may continue with fresh blood, I guess we'll see, but at the very least you might see us on some farewell dates around Oz next year. Until then....what a ride it's been."
