From the creators of the Sundance hit short, "Hellion," producer Kelly Williams, writer/director Kat Candler and Jonny Mars will premiere their newest short film, "Black Metal" at this year’s 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
After a career spent mining his music from the shadows, the actions of one fan create a chain-reaction for the lead singer of a black metal band. "Black Metal" stars Jonny Mars (Hellion, Saturday Morning Massacre, A Teacher), Heather Kafka (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saturday Morning Massacre, Joe), Lowell Bartholomee, and introduces Addisyn Stevenson.
The film, produced by Kat Candler, Jonny Mars and Kelly Williams, was shot by Andrew Droz Palermo (cinematographer of You’re Next, V/H/S and A Teacher) and edited by Duane Graves (director of The Wildman of the Navidad and Boneboys).
They comment: “We’re thrilled to be returning to Park City with our newest film, Black Metal. Sundance has been an amazing home to us this last year. We’re so humbled by their support of our films and our careers.”
The 2012 Sundance short, "Hellion" went on to play over 40 festivals and is currently in development as a feature film partnered with the Sundance Institute. Kelly Williams, producer of "Hellion," "Black Metal," and Yen Tan’s 2013 Sundance feature film "Pit Stop," was a 2012 Sundance Creative Producing Lab fellow with the feature version of "Hellion."

Helsott, which will be joining Ensiferum on the road for the 2013 Paganfest America tour, has checked in with the following update about a lineup change:
"We are saddened to announce the departure of Ben Mumaw from Helsótt. Ben has been forced to leave the band due to personal issues. We've had a lot of great times with Ben and we are going to miss him. We wish him the best in all future endeavors.
"We are now looking for a new male clean vocalist and a folk/traditional instrumentalist to go on Paganfest US Tour with us.
"Male Vocals: We prefer operatic vocals but also like power/prog metal, and classic rock as well. If you sing and play an instrument, that would be a plus.
"FOLK/TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTALIST: We like Flute, Penny Whistle, Irish Tin Whistle, Violin, Cello, Bag Pipe, Dulcimer, Mandolin, etc...
"If you sing or play any of these instruments and want an audition, send a bio and a video, link, or mp3 to firstname.lastname@example.org." More...
Josh Brewer of Oregon act Dusks Embrace has issued the following announcement about the band deciding to call it a day after a final show:
"So there have been some really big changes lately. Basically all of our members have left. I have a few unfinished tracks that I am going to get done but for all intents and purposes I am now closing this chapter of my life and moving on. It may be possible that in a few years I may do something with Dusks Embrace again but for now this is the end.
"I have a few t-shirts/hoodies/cds left. I am going to do one last show by myself at the Hawthorn on the 22nd of this month. If you are at all interested in tickets let me know and I can figure out how to get them too you. I will be selling and giving away a lot of the merch at that show.
"Hope to see you all out there and thanks for all the good times and the kind words about the music I have worked on that you all have sent me over the years. It has meant the world!"

The riff-twisting duo A Fucking Elephant has completed its latest batch of percussive auditory penetration, and is preparing to drop the "Seven Inches" 7” on January 22nd.
The New Jersey-based twosome hammered out two gnarly new tracks with engineer Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia, Behold… The Arctopus), which will end a two-year release gap, the last new material having been captured on A Fucking Elephant’s split full-length with cohorts El Drugstore nearly two years ago.
As with the split, "Seven Inches" will pop out on Nefarious Industries, the indie label formed by deviants from both bands. The wax pressing will be limited to 500 copies overall -- 250 on black vinyl and 250 on yellow -- in addition to the tracks being available digitally. The track listing is:
Side A: I'm Addicted To Drugs And Sex And I Want You To Choke Me
Side B: A Bunch Of Good Looking Roundeyes More...
Meldrum is pleased to announce that the band's third album "Lifer" is officially out now via Reversed Records. "Lifer" was released as a proud tribute to the late Meldrum founding guitarist Michelle Meldrum. "Lifer" is available now on iTunes and CD Baby.
Michelle tirelessly spent her career touring the world and sharing the stage with the likes of Motorhead, Black Label Society, Sepultura, Danzig, and Nashville Pussy to name a few. During that time Michelle left a everlasting impact on the guitar world. To mark the release some of Michelle's closest friends Gene Hoglan (Testament, Death, Dark Angel, Dethklok) John Deservio (BLS, Cycle of Pain), James Lomenzo (BLS, Megadeth, White Lion), and Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Watch Tower, Broken Teeth) have commented on their fallen friend.
Gene Hoglan: "It was and still is an honor to know Michelle and it is indeed with great pride that we release 'Lifer.' I know she's watching over us and smiling along with us at this wonderful day. I know I'm a better person for knowing Michelle, and I know she feels all of our love for her, as we feel hers for us. Through tragedy may we find joy, and through 'Lifer' and all her other works, may Michelle find immortality. She'll always be immortal to us. Remember, this is meant to be cranked up." More...
It would be a stretch to call Lord Worm a “controversial” figure in metal, simply for the fact that controversy requires a high degree of visibility, and mysterious anonymity is just the way the former Cryptopsy vocalist likes it.
That may change, however, with his return to the scene at the helm of Montreal black metallers Rage Nucléaire. Not two months after the release of the subtly titled debut “Unrelenting Fucking Hatred” through Season Of Mist, the band is already hard at work on new material. Worm graciously took time out from a Friday night jam session to chat with me about Rage Nucléaire’s background, current happenings, and hopes for the near future.
In an articulate and professorial manner befitting his English-teaching pedigree and wry sense of humor, Worm also quite frankly detailed the murderous thoughts and feelings surrounding his rather antisocial worldview, his excursions into the taboo of cannibalism, the gastronomical origins of his famed moniker, and more – proving that it’s not the theatrically costumed clown at center stage you should keep an eye on, but the reclusive figure lurking just within the shadows’ edge.
We pick up just after I introduce myself over the phone. More...

Solution .45 has checked in with the following announcement about parting ways with the band's bassist:
"As of 11.12.2012 we have some very unfortunate news to share. Solution .45 and Anders Edlund have decided to part ways. This is very much a mutual split, based on a mutual understanding. With that said, we'd like to thank Anders for his contributions and years in the band, wishing him good luck in his future endeavors. Although our musical journey ends our friendship will stay intact."
Anders also commented: "Ladies and Gentlemen! A sad moment has appeared in my musical life. This is the moment when I say farewell to the job as bass player in Solution .45 . I entered the band in spring 2008 after being asked to join by my good, old friend Christian Älvestam. When he played the demo-tapes, that would later lead to the album 'For Aeons Past,' I knew instantly that it would be a real privilege for me to handle the pulse in this band. Great songs with diversity and epicenes mixed with Christian’s fabulous voice. Amongst the best I´d ever heard.
"Solution .45 started out as a 'not-knowing-what-will-happen' band. Five guys that didn´t have a clue how people would react to the music. But with time we received new members ( Patrik ) new fans and opportunities. Now, all of us have come to the conclusion that we need to put more effort into Solution .45. Meaning more rehearsals, gigs e.t.c. It´s just that…for me it´s impossible right now. My private situation makes it impossible to put as much effort into this machinery needed and as I would want to in order to make the best possible outcome. And in order not to be a hindrance for the other guys on their journey I simply choose to stand aside. I have to state that I´ve loved every moment throughout the years with this band and I had the privilege to sum it all up with the show at Progpower USA in September 2012. Where we, not only made a hell-of-a show, also met fans and new friends that I hope I will have for the rest of my life. More...
Icelandic act Ophidian I, which was covered in the technical death metal edition of our "Unearthing the Metal Underground" column, has announced the addition of guitarist Máni Konráðsson from Gruesome Glory to the group’s ranks.
Máni, who was tapped to replace Unnar Sigurdsson will make his live debut with the band next Friday, December 14th at the "Fjandinn Metal Fest" in Reykjavik, Iceland. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Despite hailing from Iceland, a land that doesn’t have a strong tradition in heavy music, Ophidian I present us a crushing and technical precise death metal sound that can rival with some of the more well-known names in the genre.
"Their debut full length album 'Solvet Saeclum' offers well-crafted and brutally intense death metal tunes with enough of technical details and complex time signatures to keep Guitar World subscribers fully occupied. However, these tracks aren't overly technical just for the sake of it as Ophidian I have crafted solid and inspired tunes that not only showcase their advanced musicianship, but are also catchy and capable of resonating in your mind.
"While this type of fusion has been attempted with varying degrees of success in the past, Ophidian I really crafted a stunning record that gives us a very refreshing take on the technical death metal genre and should be must a must-have work for fans of Obscura, Necrophagist and The Faceless."

This winter Mary Zimmer (formerly of the Madison, WI-based metal act Luna Mortis) & LA-based singer/songwriter VK Lynne take you into their homes and into their heads for their new web series. Check out a teaser trailer for the new "Tracking the Trade" series in the player below. The musicians have also released the following statement regarding the upcoming project:
“We’ve been wanting to do a project together for a long time. However, other commitments and distance hampered our efforts- until now. We sat down to discuss our collaboration on a new song. Via Skype, we began talking about our experiences in the music business, good and bad…and discovered that the biggest obstacle to making music… is lack of knowledge.
"In today’s environment, labels are expecting more and more of their artists, and indie/DIY acts are becoming plentiful. Whatever route you choose, you will need to keep your head, and hope that it is full of solid information about your creative and legal options, rights and responsibilities, both to yourself - and to those around you.
"We discovered that we both had a strong desire to share what we’d learned throughout our experiences, and show how it all applied to this project. Thus, ‘Tracking the Trade’ was born.
"In each episode, we will take our viewers through a step on our journey. How we did it, why we did it, and what we could do differently. This process will be interactive; if you want to know more about something, ask us! If we know, we’ll tell you. If we don’t know, we’ll find out. Likewise, we will turn to you for your thoughts and suggestions along the way.
"If all goes well, by the conclusion, we will have an awesome song, and we’ll all be better equipped to navigate this new music terrain - and get down to making more music with less confusion!" More...

Metalhit.com/Metal Maniacs are pleased to present the official debut CD of Argentina's experimental black/doom duo Hellige. Metalhit.com comments:
"While the black/doom scenes continue to churn out redundant albums at a consistent pace, two obscure Argentinians are composing the masterpiece of Hellige's debut self-titled album...
"Indulging this album is like entering a sacred space that has not yet been traveled. The sound is torturous and avantgarde, yet coherent enough to keep you peaking around the next corner for a musical-spiritual experience. Utterly dark, oppressive and melancholic. For fans of old Septic Flesh meets Ved Buens Ende.

"Inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Blood Ceremony and Jex Thoth, Portugal’s A Tree of Signs has crafted an impressive EP that successfully recaptures the magical spirit of the 70’s.
"Utilizing lumbering, fuzzed-out bass rumbles, chunky rhythms delivered with strong accent on crashing cymbals and some mournful vocals that sound like a wailing banshee, there’s an aura of mysticism around these four songs. That esoteric feeling lies largely in its message, conveyed through lyrics and proclamations based on Alchemical manuscripts, which will guide you through an occult ritual." More...
