Long running Swedish metallers Katatonia will release their new full-length album "Night is the New Day" in the U.S. on November 10th through Peaceville Records. Katatonia is a staple of the Swedish metal scene, having started out as straight forward death metal and evolving into a more rock oriented band with heavy doom influences. Katatonia's guitarist Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström, who is also involved with Bloodbath and Diabolical Masquerade, spoke with me about the band's upcoming album and their plans to hit the ground running on full headlining tours. Following their recent announcement of their final U.S. show, European tour, and imminent break up next year, Salt The Wound has issued the promised official statement on the matter:
"Hey everyone, last week we announced our very last tour and very last show in the United States and now that things are starting to come together we would like to let you guys in on what has been going on. Salt the Wound has been around since 2001 and has seen numerous members come and go, gone through numerous changes in style and direction cumulating with our signing to Rotten Records. We have played over 1,000 shows as a band in this time, seen not only our country but Mexico, Europe, and the UK and met some of the greatest people we have ever met all around the world. But with time we all have grown in different directions and while all wishing to pursue music just are not able to dedicate the necessary time to this band to keep it going and balance careers, families, school, and other interests. There was no event that triggered our calling an ends, no blow ups, just the right time. We booked our very last show for January 9, 2010 @ Peabody's Downunder in Cleveland, OH with our very good friends The Analyst, Above this Fire, Cholera, Dead Even, and The Screwtape letters. This will be a very special show for us as we will be playing material off of all our released albums and will be joined by our current vocalist Mat Wessoly and founding member Kevin Schaefer. We had months and months before in May booked our European tour with War From a Harlots Mouth which was just announced and we will indeed be doing this final tour. So for anyone from abroad overseas in Europe and the UK please come on out and hang for one last time.
"Currently we are selling a little bit of Salt the Wound history, there are 71 shirts spanning the past 5 years of touring, all never worn, super limited runs, limited edition, personal favorites and more that will be available on Ebay since we are not able to add single items to our online store. There are a few online now and the rest will be added all week so be sure to search "Salt the Wound" on ebay, we will also be selling a very special package for our new album "Ares" which will have an ares CD, poster, and one of our decapitated roman soldier stage banners from our last tour with Knights of the Abyss this past September.
"From now on you can find Jake at Black Metal Tattoo Co. in Strongsville, OH. Mat will be pursuing schooling and other interests. Rob, Vince, and Brooklyn are all pursuing other paths but we are not giving up music, I am sure you will be seeing us all popping up here and there involved with new projects.
"We have so many people to thank for all the support over the years starting with our families, every band we have ever played with, and far too many people to list who have helped us book shows, let us sleep at their homes, supported us buying merchandise and cds etc. Thank you everyone for the great experience."

Avenged Sevenfold has issued the following update about recording their new album:
"It has been awhile since we have shed light on our current doings. Well here is a long awaited update into the world of A7X. We came off of the road amidst one of the most turbulent times in history. Everything going on around us was overwhelming, frightening, frustrating and confusing. I must confess that it was also very exciting to me. I’m sure you can share my sentiment. We have been focused on only one thing, writing and preparing to record what to me is our most personal and epic Avenged Sevenfold album. The reason is the fact that everything happening around us in the entire world might be a once in a life time source of inspiration and direction.
"We have been harnessing every aspect of what makes A7X truly unrelenting and building off of that. I don’t think we sleep too much anymore because of the excitement we feel while writing this album. Only a world spinning out of control could inspire the music and vision we have now. Once again it is fucking exciting. We will continue finalizing our songs until we feel every note does both You as well as Us justice. We are also in the final stages of solidifying our production team, studios and engineers so that the second the axe falls and the album is written we will spend day and night in the studio until it is complete. This album will definitely take you on a very dark journey..."

Amorphis have been nominated for the the biggest music award in Finland, the Finnish Composers' Copyright Society's annual Teosto Prize. This award is not bound to any musical genre or style, and accordingly the nominees - six in all - represent the variety of Finnish music from popular music to folk, jazz as well as contemporary classical. The nominees and winners will be chosen on the grounds of the boldness, originality and innovativeness of the works.
To quote from the preliminary panel's reasonings for the choice of candidates:
"Compositions by Esa Holopainen, Santeri Kallio, Tomi Koivusaari and Tomi Joutsen and arrangements by Amorphis on the album Skyforger. The compositions and arrangements combine boldly the elements of folk, progressive rock and heavy metal. The emotional scale of the melodically voluble songs reaches from lyricism to flamboyance."
The winner of the prestige award will be announced on 1 December.
In other news, on Monday, November 9, guitarist Esa Holopainen and singer Tomi Joutsen will be guests on Finnish MTV3's Huomenta Suomi show. The feature will start at ca. 8:50 am.
Skeletonwitch has been touring relentlessly this year. Only the best of badasses can top them when Skeletonwitch comes to town. Before touring Europe with Goatwhore in December and to promote their new album “Breathing the Fire,” the band is tearing up the States, making sure there are no survivors before they leave. I caught up with guitarist Scott Kendrick and vocalist Chance Garnette when they played in Metairie, Louisiana, to talk about “Breathing the Fire” and just how fun it is to tour with Children of Bodom. A transcribed version follows. More...

Our bus broke down leaving us pretty much stranded on the side of the road with no hope of getting to the shows in Toronto and Montreal. Shit outta luck our Tour Manager called the guys in Protest the Hero who came and picked us up and took us and our trailer to the shows. Fuck yeah Protest the Hero, thanks for the rescue! We are stoked to be back in the states for a little bit and especially stoked to be heading towards Texas where the weather is warm and the beers and BBQ are never-ending. See you on the road!"

Withered has issued the following announcement about parting ways with guitarist / vocalist Chris Freeman:
"Well, many of you have noticed that Chris didn't perform at any Withered shows over the summer. And, I've been receiving numerous inquiries about this. So, I suppose it's time to make it official. Chris, after much soul searching and consideration, decided it was time to leave the front lines and pursue some personal goals that he had been putting off for years. Touring became too much of a burden for him at a time when the rest of Withered was striving to push the envelope and increase touring activity.
"Personally, I must say that I'll miss him a lot. We've been playing music together 2 or 3 times a week for the last 14 years and mutually conceived Withered in 2003. He was key in nurturing the ideology behind our music and lyrics and his contributions will be missed. Despite all of that, Mike, Beau, and I completely respect his position and there are no negative feelings towards the situation.
"As for his replacement, our friend, Dylan Kilgore, filled in for Chris on the last leg of the Blackenedfest tour last June. He did an amazing job and his work ethic in learning the songs was unparalleled. So, it was very natural for him to assume Chris' position full time. We're moving full steam ahead on the new album and the writing is going better than expected. At this point, we have 4 new tracks almost completed and anticipate the new album to be released sometime in mid 2010. We'll post more updates as they develop."
DJ Lovely has posted a new audio interview online with vocalist Jonny Tatum from Texas progressive metal band Eumeria. The audio clip can be found at this location.
Bon Jovi is officially the first major act lined up to perform at next year's Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada, dubbed the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
The annual event has been a staple to western culture since 1912 and, aside from the traditional rodeo action and farm-focused exhibition, the Calgary Stampede has a long history of promoting the arts through music, art galleries and other expressions. More than 1,000,000 visitors pass through the gates each year. The Stampede next runs July 9-18, 2010, with New Jersey’s Bon Jovi set to perform at the Pengrowth Saddledome the evening of July 14.
Bon Jovi’s visit to next year’s Stampede will be their only western Canadian arena show during the band’s The Circle World Tour. The tour will see the group spend much of the next two years on the road, performing 135 shows in 30 countries.
“Obviously, we’re overjoyed to welcome Bon Jovi, one of the hardest working rock bands in the world to next year’s Stampede,” say Jim Laurendeau, senior manager, Stampede Programming. “We know that this is just the first of many major announcements about the talented lineup we’re bringing to next year’s show. Stay tuned.”
Over the past two decades, Bon Jovi has sold more than 120 million albums, and performed more than 2,600 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans. They’re best known for their hair metal hits of the ’80s, like “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

Vocalist/Rhythm Guitar Chris "OJ" Ojeda comments about their upcoming reunion, "2 and 1/2 years ago we put a sudden and abrupt halt to our musical careers under the name Byzantine. It was a really anti-climactic way to go out. We know a lot of fans and friends alike felt cheated that we didn't play any shows supporting our last album, 'Oblivion Beckons.' Now, we all feel like it's time to give a little something back, all guns blazing. Unfortunately, we are unable to tour since we live scattered across 3 states, have children and full time jobs, but we want to give our local fans something to remember us by."
The reunion show schedule is as follows:
03/5 - The Sound Factory, Charleston, WV
03/6 - The V Club, Huntington, WV
03/7 - 123 Pleasant Street, Morgantown, WV

Triptykon, the new band formed by former Celtic Frost and Hellhammer mastermind Thomas G. Fischer, has begun the mixing stage of their debut album "Eparistera Daimones," which is expected to be released next Spring through the bands own Prowling Death Records. A message from Fischer reads as follows:
"This past Tuesday, I returned to Woodshed Studio in Bavaria, Germany, for the third time since we began studio work on Triptykon’s debut album, Eparistera Daimones, in summer. While briefly back in Zurich, I finalized the album’s artwork, and we recorded the piano, violin, and female vocals that will be featured in some of the songs. As Nadine Rimlinger played the violin on Saturday, it was impossible not to feel transferred back to 1987, when we recorded the classical musicians for "Into The Pandemonium". Even though we are producing a much darker and heavier album this time around, some of the sounds created by Nadine were at times eerily reminiscent of such era past.
"The week in Zurich ended appropriately. Our friends in the incomparable PANTHEON I played in Zurich, and that same night, we made new friends in fellow touring act Zoroaster, who sound much like a staggering, modern incarnation of HELLHAMMER.
"Now, back in Germany, we have commenced mixing the songs we recorded during prior sessions. It is a challenging and complex album to mix, not just because of its musical content. But this mixing session is at the same time also one of the most intriguing I have ever been a part of. This is an unusual album, for better or for worse, in a very distinctive context. It is winter here, cold, dark, and wet. An utterly perfect setting, then, for tomorrow’s mixing session of 'The Prolonging', all 19 morbid, lumbering minutes of it."
American doom metal outfit High On Fire has announced that they will be naming their forthcoming new album, "Snakes For The Divine." The album is expected to be released in February of next year and will be produced by Greg Fidelman, who recently produced the latest Slayer album, "World Painted Blood." Stay tuned for further details.
In a rather strange bit of news, legendary Motorhead frontman Lemmy will be teaming up with Dave Lombardo, the drummer of thrash metal legends Slayer, to record a cover of the Ben E. King classic, "Stand By Me." This is to be featured on the soundtrack of an upcoming movie entitled, "Extremely Sorry." Expect the soundtrack to hit the shelves on December 7th.
