Taking the dark tales of Appalachian folk forefathers to contemporary Southern doom territory, Northern Virgina-based quintet King Giant has wrapped up the final details on the band's sophomore full-length release, "Dismal Hollow," and is preparing to self-release it just after the kickoff of the new year. A press release from the band's publicist reads as follows:
"Brooding even darker and more sinister homage to their rock and metal forefathers than their heralded self-released 2009 debut album, Southern Darkness, this new album sets a new par for KING GIANT, further developing their hard but harmonized style, as always chock full of well-written hooks and deep grooving thunder. Recorded at Inner Ear Studio (Minor Threat, Fugazi, Avail, Jawbox, Dave Grohl), and inherently boasting full-on Americana both musically and conceptually, the eight tracks harnessed on Dismal Hollow are easily King Giant’s most well-written and monstrous anthems captured to date."
"Dismal Hollow" will be available worldwide on January 31st, 2012 -- a split release between King Giant’s band-operated imprint Graveyard Hill Records and The Path Less Traveled Records, part of the MRI Group, with distribution by RED, Code 7 and Plastichead -- and will be available in CD, LP, and digital download formats. Dutch doom-death metal legends Asphyx have now finished work on their 8th studio album, entitled "Deathhammer." Set to be released on February 27th, 2012 in Europe and February 28th, 2012 in North America via Century Media Records, "Deathhammer" features artwork by the band's long-time partner in designs, Axel Hermann.
Hermann has not only worked on all of the early Asphyx artwork, but is also responsible for classic Century Media artwork by bands like Morgoth, Unleashed, Samael, and Grave. In regards to their newfound collaboration, both parties commented:
"ASPHYX and Axel Hermann is a fusion that has always functioned perfectly...from the days of 'The Rack' back in 1991, 'til 'Deathhammer' in 2012. Like others such as Dan Swanö, Axel may be considered as an external member of the band and when we asked him to do the 'Deathhammer' cover--and as usual we would leave him free in his expression--we were very pleased to hear he was willing to take it on.
"...And the man has exceeded himself! To the perfect death metal album comes the perfect cover that still leaves enough to everyone's imagination. We hope he is as proud as we are on the final result. It seems all falls into place for this deathdozer of an album. I guess Axel can expect an offer from Le Louvre any time now. More...

Lyrically, "I Am Nemesis" is a continuation of the band's last record, "Say Hello To Tragedy," and focuses on controversial and often overlooked world issues. Musically, Görtz says, "The album breaks new soil without forgetting our roots. There are new influences such as shimmering guitar melodies and technical grooves with Meshuggah-like heaviness."

Nightwish vocalist Anette Olzon checked in from the band's rehearsals for the upcoming "Imaginaerum" tour with the following update on the band's Facebook page:
"So, I thought its time to write a little thing about our rehearsals over here in Helsinki and what we have been up to the last week.
"Last Thursday we went to our rehearsal place already in the morning and it was really nice to get in front of the microphone again and hearing what the guys had done the days before. We have some nice things planned and its always interesting to hear if it works out and yeah, it did. Singing the songs from Imaginaerum live for the first time was interesting and it's always this weird thing that songs I thought would be easy to sing live can be a bit tricky, while the ones I thought would be hard went really easy. This is something that happens every time and some songs seem to come alive even more in the rehearsing space.
"This first day we practiced for many hours and it takes some time to get into the songs so the day after we all sounded even better. I felt how we all started to get more and more into every song and leaving that day behind me felt very rewarding and anticipating of the rehearsals yesterday when our dear Troy joined us and made our group complete. For me, personally, Troy gives me calmness and positiveness and everything feels so fun, the music flows and we just had so fun together all day.
"Yesterday was the last rehearsing day for this time and even if I long to go home to my dear boys at home, I already long for our rehearsals in january cause I leave Helsinki with a sense of joy and knowledge that next year will be wonderful and fun together with these guys and with the music I love to sing.
"Today Imaginaerum was released and its so nice to finally have the album out!"
