Leif Edling Issues Track-By-Track Commentary

The masters of the catacombs from The Doomsday Kingdom release their mesmerizing new EP "Never Machine" on November 25th, Today Candlemass' virtuoso Leif Edling reveals more details about these four new songs. In this first track-by-track feature, he invites you into the darkest corners of doom metal.

"'Never Machine' is the first track on the EP," Leif explains. "It is also the very first song that I wrote for The Doomsday Kingdom. It starts with a riff à la Black Sabbath and takes off into doomier territories with the haunting chorus and the extra heavy outro! I must also mention Marcus Jidell's blitzering solo. First Lips from Anvil was supposed to come down to the Ghostward studio in Stockholm and do his thing with it, but it should have been too tight for him time-wise because of the Anvil show in Stockholm the same day. So Marcus did it instead and I totally love it!

"'The Sceptre' is the second track on the EP. I've said many things about this song already, so I thought I should mention a couple of things that you don't already know. This is the demo version of it, right?! On the album version, 'The Sceptre' is a bit re-arranged. There's a couple of more harmony guitars added on it as well. We also have some people guesting: In the mid 'classical' solo part, we included a mellotron that is played by one of this country's best mello-players, who's name I will disclose later on... Same thing with the long end solo. One of my all time heroes and musical influences was kind enough to put his guitar and stamp on here to make this song very special! Lovely solo, lovely bloke!" The Great Old Ones Posts New Song

The Great Old Ones just released a new song, available below, and the band also issued this statement:

"We are very proud to present the first track taken from our new album 'EOD – A Tale Of Dark Legacy', which will be released January 27th on Season of Mist. This album is composed as a sequel to H. P. Lovecraft’s masterpiece ‘The Shadow Over Innsmouth,’ which is precisely the name of this track.

"The album will be available in digipack, 2xLP, and a beautiful 36-page CD book with exclusive artworks by Jeff Grimal! Pre-order here. We think that the song 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' stands for all that we wanted to achieve with this record: it is powerful, violent, epic, and of course heavily atmospheric and emotion driven.

"In the context of our conceptual story, this chapter tells of the arrival of the protagonist in the eponymous infamous city. He is gazing over the derelict harbour and remembering the frightening journal of his ancestor, he knows that nothing will ever be the same again. 'I see it at the horizon, like in my nightmare, a gigantic black swan, the devil reef, fascination and fear.'" More...

The Agonist Posts New Lyric Video

The Agonist released latest album and Napalm Records debut "Five" this past September. As the band prepares to head out on the first North American tour in support of "Five," today The Agonist drops a lyric video for the song "The Man Who Fell To Earth." Guitarist Danny Marino says of the video:

"When the news broke this year of David Bowie's death it hit me pretty hard. Especially because of how his last album 'Blackstar' turned into more than just a new record but a swan song of an artist still breaking boundaries even today. I had an instrumental that I knew was outside the box for The Agonist and felt I could make this a Bowie dedication.

"I used a lyric writing method called 'cut-ups' that I had heard Bowie himself used. It is when you find books or magazines surrounding the topic you are writing about and cut out individual words, and rearrange them until it starts to form a story. I used album reviews of his last album that were written before it was known he was dying. In the end the result comes out as a eulogy to be read at his funeral. I'm really happy with the dark vibe we achieved in studio with this one."

The Agonist's tour begins this Friday November 4th in Quebec City, QC and runs through December 3rd in Worcester, MA. A complete list of dates can be found below. More...
